Intel KMS + mplayer with .32 kernel
Hi
Just want to mention that with the new 2.6.32 kernel from [testing] mplayer works again in framebuffer with intel KMS
I have a 915 GM chipset and was not able to watch a movie in tty for months (since I switched to KMS). Just use it with -vo fbdev2.
Wow, this is great. Last time I tried was with 2-6.32-rc8 and it didn.t work. Glad they managed to fix it before releasing -final.

Intel KMS... Finaly useful
After the 2.6.31 kernel and xf86-video-intel 2.9 kms performance is finaly on par with performace of xf86-video-intel 2.7 with EXA on GEM kernel. And also the system is much more stable, no more hardlocks, it's intel's finaly done something 'bout those.
The only bad thing for now is that with KMS enabled lower resolutions (my native is 1280x800) that use different aspect ratio (for example 1024x768) stretch the screen, instead of using two sidelines of 133 pixels)
Anyone know how to fix that.
p.s. Finaly able to use kwin4 compositing, without receiving an immediate hardlock.Well... I've been getting hardlocks and kernel panics quite frequently on my notebook... Tested with dell test system for sytem errors for several hours and nothing came up so I'm living with them...
I was getting a weekly kernel panic and 3 dayly hardlock, however no hardlocks since using KMS so that's why I said a step in the right direction xd -
ATI display driver fails to work with new kernel
Hi,
I've just upgraded from
OEL kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5.x86_64
to most current
OEL kernel-2.6.18-194.11.4.0.1.el5.x86_64
and got the problem with ATI display driver. Whenever I perform kernel upgrade, I have to recompile vendor-provided ATI display driver downloadable from AMD/ATI site, because system ATI driver, provided by OEL/RHEL as kernel module, doesn't work properly (too slow). I did that hundred times and never had a problem. This time the problem is that after upgrading to new kernel and recompiling the existing ATI display driver (Revision 10.8), it doesn't work anymore, even though it worked perfectly with previous kernel. I cannot even start X11 (glibc problem reported with stack traces!!!). The newest ATI display driver (Revision 10.9) "works" with new kernel, but display is awfully slow making any serious work impossible. It is even slower than system-provided ATI driver.
I am pretty sure the problem is in new kernel. As I have no backup of old kernel files and couldn't download the previous OEL kernel files from ULN, neither binary nor source (the files do not exist on ULN anymore, only the recent kernel files), I downloaded the previous kernel source from ftp.redhat.com, compiled the kernel and downgraded to it, recompiled ATI display driver, and everything works properly and fast as before upgrading. I can remember that ULN site used to have all kernel versions prior to actual one and cannot understand why Oracle dropped this practice. As I have an ULN account, I certainly want to have OEL patched kernel.
My question is: does anybody know how and where I can download the previous OEL kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5.x86_64 binary rpm files or at least source rpm file?
Maybe Sergio or Tommy can help?
Thanks in advance.
NJI have experienced the same with Ubuntu some years ago - specific feature (hack?) that was implemented in the kernel was deprecated. This was used by the display driver for an onboard Intel graphics chipset. Beryl (which was subsequently merged with Compiz) turned into a horribly slow experience. As far as I recall, a subsequent kernel patch "fixed" things as a number of users were affected, of which many complained very loudly.
Anyway, I think the lesson here is that OEL is not really the correct distro to use for a desktop. A broken ATI driver for the OEL kernel? Does not really feature in the scheme of things for OEL support. Oracle Grid/RAC/Enterprise/Standard Edition do not care. Oracle's application servers (Apache, Weblogic, etc) do not care. Etc.
Sure, GUI desktop access to an OEL server is needed (like when running dbca or an installer) - but that can easily and effectively be done using vncserver for example and running twm.
You may be able to fix/work-around the problem with the current kernel update.. you may be able to roll back the update. But what about the next time when some other component does not work after a patch or an update? Surely it is a lot less stressful and frustrating to rather use a desktop distro, like Ubuntu, instead? -
[solved] can't find/build mplayer with vdpau codec support
I want to install an mplayer that will handle vdpau.
I installed the standard mplayer version but that didn't have it.
Following some advice in another thread I rebuilt the standard mplayer with yaourt.
When I do 'mplayer -vo help' it shows a vdpau driver on the list. But when I do 'mplayer -vc help' there are no vdpau codecs listed.
I tried the same thing with mplayer-svn but get the same results.
I even tried compiling mplayer manually but get the same results.
What am I doing wrong?
TIA, gabu
(I have just moved to Archlinux64 after 3 years with Gentoo, so my Gentoo experience might be getting in the way)

I manually compiled using the svn source that I currently use on my Gentoo system and get the same odd results, whereas on Gentoo it compiles as you expect. This would seem to indicate that there is something about the Arch environment which is causing the problem rather than purely the source code.
I tried installing mplayer-vdpau-nogui but have the same problem there. -
Suspend / Resume problem with -ck kernels.
Sometimes with the linux-ck kernel my laptop doesn't suspend / resume correctly.
Sometimes when suspending my laptop will take "extra long" to suspend.
When it resumes the processor & fan will turn on, but the suspend light will still be blinking and the screen doesn't turn on. Sometimes (but not always) the caps-lock light will start blinking after I try to wake it up, like a kernel panic. It happens more often when closing the lid to suspend, but has happened while suspending manually.
This only happens with -ck kernels. I have tried both the linux-ck and linux-ck-corex kernels with same result. This started happening around kernel 3.0.8 I believe. I thought it was a bug that would be fixed, but it still occurs.
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T410s, Intel Core i5, Intel graphics. I use the TLP scripts for power savings, and Xfce-Power-Manager for my power manager. I can see nothing relevant in the logs. Suspend / Resume always works with the "official" kernel.
Any ideas?Ok, I think I narrowed the problem down to the BFS scheduler.
I compiled "linux-bfs" from the AUR, installed it and rebooted and lo and behold my suspend / resume problem was back. Rebooted with the stock kernel, did about 10 suspend & resume cycles in a row... and it worked great each time.
Sometimes when using linux-bfs or linux-ck, I can "revive" the system after a bad resume, by closing the lid and opening it slowly. Also I know the screen is just not "off", because the caps lock key light will not respond. If the caps-lock key light starts blinking (on-and-off) after a resume, I assume it is a kernel panic, and nothing besides a forced power-off will fix it.

Multiple instances of mplayer with jack
"_R_ealtime software mixing ?!?! wtf thats awesome--actually im not a studio junkie, i just need sound on one of them"
i understand that the casual nature of my involvement with jackd suggests a less-than-appropriate level of respect and diligence for what this almighty app is capable of serving up. i just need to level audio volume on multiple instances of mplayer with software mixing (my sound card is cheap).
all my jackd configs are vanilla from the wiki as stated below. if anyone has another solution or a request for information in regard to this solution please reply. as always, thanks in advance
--here is some err... background
i have a some files that i would like to run with mplayer and a video file [with its own audio] that i would like to run concurrently. it should be possible to use jackd to let one instance of mplayer show video with no sound while permitting the audio from the other instance to play at arbitrary volume. without jack, i cannot control sound independantly since both instances seem to use the same device (PCM0). furthermore i have found that starting multiple instances of mplayer leads to weird artifacts which persist after all running instances of mplayer concurrent with artifact appearance have been closed.
so i installed jack-audio-connection-kit following the wiki verbatim. then i installed qjackctl. starting jackd as root and qjackctl with sudo allowed me to see the first instance of mplayer but not the second.
what is the difference between running mplayer through alsa and running mplayer through jack through alsa (not sure if the objects are accurately laid out there but whatever)? the wiki basically provides an out of the box solution for software mixing a bunch of inputs (i have friends who do sound professionally though not with linux and im envisioning way more complicated stuff than my humble pair of mplayers

If you run one file with '-ao null' and the other one with '-vo null' you can manipulate them independently, there's no sound mixing involved, it just allows you "to add visuals to an audio feed spontaneously". They can both be run with 'af scaletempo' to speed up / slow down etc.
Hmm, wonder if that's what the OP was looking for?

I need the Adobe Flash Player version 11.1.102.64plug in on my MacAir to view Ustream videos. Adobe message says the version is for Intel-based Macs with Safari; also says that I "may have to temporarily disable antivirus software. is it safe to download?
Your MacBook Air is an Intel-based system. To download the current version (11.2.202.228), go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and download it from there.
If there is still a Flash issue, you can try the Google Chrome browser, which has the current Flash built into it, to see if it works any differently with the videos. It's available from https://www.google.com/chrome -

I can't install Windows 7 key over KMS host with WS 2012 R2
Hi
I have a KMS Host with Windows Server 2012 R2. I don't have problems installing keys for Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Office 2013, Windows Server 2012 R2. However, when I tried install keys for Windows 7, Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2008, I have the next message:
C:\slmgr.vbs /ipk <Windows 7 key>
Error: 0xC004F050 The Software Licensing Service reported that the product key is invalid
I've installed the keys from the same source.

For a KMShost with the OS=WS2012R2, you cannot, and, there is no need to, install any other Windows KMShost keys. The WS2012R2 KMShost key, by itself, will activate the KMShost OS, and will also enable the issuing of activations for ALL Windows KMSclients.
Office KMS features are different, and do need to be installed for Office KMSclient activations.
The error you are experiencing is expected, and is a result of your attempt to perform an unnecessary configuration step.

[SOLVED] How to add modules to build with the kernel?
Hello i´m trying to learn how to build my own custom kernel and doing it the arch way https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … raditional. But unfortunately dm-crypt was not included in the kernel so it all failed.
svart_alg% sudo mkinitcpio -k 3.15.6 -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-test.img

I have never don any of this before and have no idea of how to add a missing module to the kernel i´m building. So i search on internet and had a very hard time finding a good guide for this but i fond one possible solution. https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio … odules.txt
svart_alg% make -C /home/nigro_alko/Kernel/linux-3.15.6 M=/home/nigro_alko/Kernel/cryptsetup-1.6.5/Makefile.in

So is there any one that have time to help a lost little newbie i would bee very happy :-)

Reason enough IMO. But anyway... you refer to the Traditional build method in the wiki, but is it possible you didn't really read it? Or maybe you only skimmed it? Did you run make menuconfig? Did you try to build everything in instead of using modules? That mkinitcpio output suggests that you did.
As suggested there for first-timers, it's a good idea to start with a kernel configuration that is known to work - the Arch config is the obvious choice, but there are other sources e.g. http://kernel-seeds.org/ .
