Radeon Early KMS Fails with Linux LTS

Upgraded to linux-lts 3.0.72-1 yesterday. Kernel now hangs for 60 seconds during the KMS switch with the following error messages (with both the main initramfs and the fallback):
[ 61.120047] r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/REDWOOD_pfp.bin"
[ 61.120083] [drm:evergreen_startup] *ERROR* Failed to load firmware!
[ 61.120121] radeon 0000:01:00.0: disabling GPU acceleration
GPU acceleration is then disabled and I cannot activate desktop effects.
Here's the full dmesg:

This occurs with the 3.4 kernel as well, so whatever incompatibility was introduced was fixed in 3.5 or 3.6. I'm using 3.7.10 right now (since everything else seems to be broken in some way), and not experiencing this.

  • "unable to find root device" error with linux-lts

    Hi all,
I'm having a problem with booting linux-lts after a recent upgrade (3.14.39-1 -> 3.14.43-2). In particular, I get an "unable to find root device" error.
I have look at other threads for potential solutions; I have tried a) re-installing linux-lts, b) adding 'block' before 'autodetect' in mkinitcpio.conf before the re-installation, and c) changing /dev/sdb4 (my root partition) in syslinux.cfg to UUID and PARTUUID. I still get the same error.
In the emergency shell, running 'blkid' does not show the root partition in the output.
If I boot from the latest kernel (4.0.4-2), it all boots fine.
Does anybody have any ideas on anything I could try to get linux-lts to boot? I'd prefer to stay with the lts kernel if possible.

KangarooLemonade wrote:I ran through the beginner's guide to installing Arch on the wiki and installed Arch onto an external USB hard drive.
Yeah? And did you see this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … nvironment ?
Here you need to set the right hooks if the root is on a USB drive, if you use RAID, LVM, or if /usr is on a separate partition.
No, of course you missed it...
Boot your install using the Fallback entry. If you do not have a Fallback entry, press Tab (for Syslinux) or "e" (for GRUB) and rename it initramfs-linux-fallback.img. After it boots, open up a terminal and run:
    # nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
<add "usb" to the HOOKS line>
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
    # reboot
And don't forget to mark it as solved.

  • Mac Pro (Early 2008) failing with new monitor

    Hi All,
I am having a strange problem with my Mac Pro and new display (ViewSonic VX2703MH-LED 27-Inch LED-Lit LCD Monitor). I first noticed some strangeness when I attempted to temporarily run the maching on a new Samsung HDTV that doubles as a computer monitor. I am using a Mini-DV to HDMI adapter, which worked great on two Samsung monitors I'd previously purchased. Anyway, I returned those because I needed ones with standard VESA mounts. So when I plug any of the new monitors in, I am getting some very unstable behavior. Sometimes the mac won't even start up, not even in safe mode. I was able to check all of my disks and zap the P-RAM, and all seems OK, yet every time I am able to startup and login successfully, it crashes after a short while after the display starts acting up. Horizontal and vertical lines come through and all of the color gets messed up. Sometimes my startup screen looks like this:
I found a table on apple.com that shows which Mac models can use Mini DVI --> HDMI adapters, but it is incomplete - it doesn't mention the Mac Pro from early 2008 at all. I was going to install Mavericks, hoping that might help, but I couldn't burn a bootable DVD copy of Lion because it is a tad too large for a DVD, even though I've read on several sites that this is possible! I am scared to blindly do the upgrade, because I am pretty sure this is some kind of hardware issue. Anyone have any experience with this? I don't think it can be just the Viewsonic monitor because I had similar troubles on the Samsung TV...however the previous Samsung monitors are not here to test. Any insight appreciated!

RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards

    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • BDLS failing with ASSERTION_FAILED dump

    Dear Experts,
We have replaced the existing quality system DF0 with RC0.These both system are quality systems and RC0 has been refreshed from production.
So in BW qulaity system we need to replace the DF0 with RC0 as source system. I have created logical system name LSRC0310 for RC0 in BW qulaity system and ran a BDLS to convert DF0 to RC0. But it is giving a dump ASSERTION_FAILED.
Earlier it failed with error that logical system LSRC0310 name alreday exists. So i deleted the logical system name and ran BDLS but it again failed with same error.I have checked the logs and it just makes an entry in table TBDLS, TBDLST. The logs in BDLSS also says that the conversion went in error with "Error in field of table . Manual correction required."
Thus the source system DF0 is not replaced in RSA1 also i can still see cubes pointing to DF0.
I have referred to Modify source system link but it is failing in the BDLS step so cannot proceed ahead.
Please can you guide and help is solving this issue.
    Regards,
    KUldeep.

    Thanks Walter for your reply.
This note is already present in the system and still BDLS fails with this message.
I hope my approach is correct.
Currently source system is DF0 and we want to convert to RC0. So running a BDLS will convert all the logical source system names for all the transfer structure and DTPs and transformations. Then after BDLS step i can restore the source system in RSA1.
Please confim if my this is feasible.
    Regards,
    Kuldeep.

With linux-lts, there no problems at all. I saw this report but i dont think is related to the futex race issue.
    Any help appreciated.

because the report opener said that those freezes fixed with the 'futex' patch (included in 3.14-5).
    As he says:
for those who have again problems despite the patch it means probably that there are another bugs further in the source code of kernel 3.14, bugs who are not necessarily related to the "futex problem"
i will try a clean profile, thanks.

  • Linux-lts woes

I recently tried to switch to linux-lts kernel by installing the package and editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. However after restarting my system with linux-lts kernel, I found significance increase in booting times and shutdown times. Also starting and using applications look a bit sluggish and also sound of my speakers have dropped. Any idea why? Some bug?

You'll really need to do some digging, I have multiple systems running linux-lts here and no performance/shutdown issues (except that my server likes to keep rebooting instead of shutting down ).

  • Linux-lts leads to black screen on rebooting even for linux (solved)

I'd like to mention a problem I faced when trying linux-lts (kernel 3.14). I had the "linux" kernel installed (4.0). If someone has an idea on what happened, please share.
    sudo pacman -S linux-lts
    , then
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
, reboot, choose the lts-kernel. I can login to the desktop (lxde, lxqt and i3 are all working). Then reboot, pick any of linux or linux-lts kernels. And here the problem starts: black screen.
I tried to debug the booting process by following https://wiki.freedesktop.org/www/Softwa … Debugging/. I couldn't resolve anything.
By luck I thought "what if it's the login manager (lxdm) that's black?", and so I tried to aim at the middle of the screen with the mouse on the 100% black screen, I entered my password and "boom" I was on the lxqt desktop!
I rebooted, same problem. But by trying to guess where the password box was, I could login to my desktop. To fix the problem at first, I did remove linux-lts, reinstalled linux with pacman, removed lxdm and its systemd service, installed sddm and enabled its service, regenerated the grub.cfg file. Rebooting worked, no black screen.
At that point I thought "well it might just have been lxdm not working well with linux-lts so let's try to install it again, since now I have sddm". Huge mistake... After reinstalling linux-lts, booting in it, rebooting lead again to a black screen on boot up. This time however trying to aim at the box to enter my password was impossible: I was not used to sddm so I didn't know where to click. I tried the "tab" key around 20 times, entering my password each time, without success. So I ended up using the live Arch.iso version on a usb flash drive to remove the linux-lts, sddm (yeah I went for lxdm again), etc. by chrooting. This worked again: no more black screen.
The irony is that I installed that kernel thinking of increasing the stability of Arch on my laptop. It ended up breaking the booting process of both kernels!
And since I want to understand Linux in general, I am posting this in hopes that it could help someone else facing this problem and also in hopes that someone can explain me what could have happened. Because as of now I don't understand how lxdm and sddm could appear black in both kernels when rebooting from the linux-lts kernel.
    Thanks for any pointer.

OK just to confirm that enabling the testing repository solved the problem for me as well.
These were the updated packages (excluding dbus which I manually upgraded before enabling the repo):
    Targets (18): device-mapper-2.02.98-3  filesystem-2012.12-1  isl-0.11-1  libpulse-2.99.2-1  libquvi-0.4.1-2  libssh2-1.4.3-1  linux-3.6.9-1
                  linux-headers-3.6.9-1  lua-5.2.1-2  lua51-5.1.5-3  lvm2-2.02.98-3  mkinitcpio-0.12.0-1  nmap-6.25-2  pulseaudio-2.99.2-1  talloc-2.0.8-1
                  vlc-2.0.4-5  xorg-server-1.13.0.901-1  xorg-server-common-1.13.0.901-1
It might be any of those but most likely could be either the kernel or xorg-server* (just for future reference).

I am using a frequently updated Arch install on a Macbook Pro 6,2.  I have an intermittent problem for the last week or two.  I am not sure how to troubleshoot.  I could be missing something, but I am not sure what.  I use systemd power features to suspend my laptop (systemctl hibernate).  I tried with current linux (3.15.7-1) and even started using linux-lts (3.14.15-1).  It does not happen every resume, but very frequently I can boot, go past refind, select the boot entry (keyboard works in grub2), enter the LUKS passphrase (keyboard works), and after resume I can get the password prompt in xscreensaver.  At this point, the mouse works but not the keyboard.  I plug in a spare external USB keyboard, and then I reload hid_apple with rmmod and modprobe, and fix the X keyboard settings.  Only then does the Macbook discrete keyboard work.  Does anyone have ideas how to fix this?
    Mkinitcpio hooks:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf keymap block encrypt lvm2 resume filesystems keyboard fsck shutdown modconf consolefont"
Grub kernel parameters (I only recently added nmi_watchdog=0, as this was causing other failed resumes and I thought it was inter-related, the keyboard issue occurs regardless however):
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/disk/by-uuid/00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000:vgmain resume=/dev/mapper/vgmain-lvswap i915.lvds_channel_mode=2 i915.lvds_use_ssc=0 i915.lvds_downclock=1 i915.i915_enable_rc6=7 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.modeset=1 radeon.modeset=0 nouveau.modeset=0 pcie_aspm=force video=efifb nmi_watchdog=0"

I am not sure what happened, but the issue resolved after upgrading my kernels (vanilla linux and linux-lts) and other deps.  I had to move off pacget and moved back to default.  When I was using pacget I found no updates for a week or more, so I knew something must be up if this is an Arch laptop.
Anyone, the updated kernels seemed to have resolved the issue.  It was exacerbated by this kernel version apparently.

I am however able to boot the linux-lts & my own custom kernels. Custom kernel is built from the abs linux package.
The / partition is on a raid 0 with an ext4 filesystem. fsck -f /dev/md127 comes back clean & the raid & two hard drives are healthy.

    xanb,
For sanity to prevail, I am going to suggest the following:
    Back up your data
Remove the RAIDs from your 2 linux hard drives. The Arch RAID wiki has instructions on this or (my prefered method) wipe your two linux drives with dd. If you are not sure on dd "Parted Magic" has a GUI for it.
Create a new partition table on both of your linux hard drives.
    Partition your 2 linux hard drives as follows;
    /dev/sdb1 as / (root) with ext4 fs
    /dev/sdb2 as swap
    /dev/sdc1 as /home with ext4 fs.
Reinstall Arch Linux on / (/dev/sdb1)
I would also recommend reading up in the Arch wiki, Kernel wiki etc on RAID & decide why you would use it on your system & which one would give you any benefit with your current hardware set up. Also learn more on how to create & maintain a RAID on an Arch system.
Keep in mind that KISS is always the way to go with any computer system as complexity will always increase the amount of mistakes & gotchas.
No. I don't want to behave as ostrich, hide the head ;-) This is my configuration, this is want I want. If archlinux fails, we have a bug. Another question is if the triage of the bug is difficult. No all bugs are good for triagging, but it's real life. If always we change the configuration, we will never detect new bugs.
Keep in mind that I don't want to blame, it's always "good force" comments.

  • Hibernate fails with open source radeon driver

I have set up hibernate properly and it worked on Catalyst.
Today I switched to the open source driver and I can't put my computer in hibernate or hybrid sleep mode. When I try, both of my monitors turn off then immediately turn back on with a completely blank picture. They both report that they are getting the correct mode for them. At this point my HDD led is not blinking (I'm pretty sure the HDD itself has stopped, didn't check), and the reset button is ineffective. If I forcefully power of the PC and turn it back on it boots as if nothing has happened.
I tried linux-ice and uswsusp but neither solved my problem.
Further debugging shows that this is due to KMS (booting with nomodeset lets me hibernate successfully but I'd like to run X). Using the kernel documentation's debug procedures (https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio … ugging.txt) I found that it happens when the kernel suspends devices. I can't really provide much more info unless you guys know how to squeeze it out of the kernel.
It's worth mentioning my GPU is an HD7970 (I can list other things if needed), and that the driver works perfectly fine otherwise. I do recall that hibernating worked at one point but I can't remember when it was broken as I first discovered the bug a few months ago after switching back from catalyst.
I found some guy on the Gentoo forums with the same issue (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7642484.html) so it might be an upstream bug in the driver. If anyone could shed some light or tell me where to report this bug in particular (kernel ? freedesktop.org ?) I'd be grateful.
    Thanks in advance.

Alright I found the culprit. Adding radeon.dpm=0 to the kernel command line lets me hibernate on the current kernel. I lose power management but it's fine for now, will definitely check things out in the source when I have time.

You could use import option show=y to capture import run statements and find CREATE TABLESPACE statements. Keep in mind your target database already has undo, temp system, etc. tablespaces so you do not need to precreate them. Then rerun import.

My system is working fine. Out of curiosity I glanced at the ATI dowloads and saw that the 9650xt (Radeon) for Mac has a driver with a newer date than my computer. As a new Mac user I want to ask: do most of you leave it alone unless you have a problem? Thank you.

ATI Support would not comment either so I will contact Apple Support.

  • Dicovering Intelligent Agent on Linux fails with VD-4565

I try to discover an Intelligent Agent 8.1.5 running on a Linux server with an Oracle 8.1.5 DB from an Oracle Enterprise Management Server 2.1. We just upgraded from OEM 2.0.4 to 2.1 and I had no problem with the Linux agent under 2.0.4.
After starting the Agent on the Linux server the SERVICES.ORA and SNMP_RO.ORA files contain the information about the services running on the server. When I start the Discovery Wizard it fails with the error 'Discovery Failed:VD-4565:The agent of the node is already being deleted'.
Then I stoped the agent and all service on the Linux server and did the following. I removed the SID_LIST entry from the LISTENER.ORA file and used the LOCAL_LISTENER init.ora parameter for the database. I know that the agent needs the SID_LIST to discover the database services, but I just wanted to give it a try. After restarting the database, listener and agent the SERVICE.ORA and SNMP_RO.ORA files did not contain any service information as expected. I tried to discover the agent again from the OEM 2.1 console and everything seemed to work fine. No errors this time. The Linux node was added to Nodes folder in the Navigator tree, but for sure no database or listener.
Therefore I put the SID_LIST back into the listener.ora file and restarted the listener and agent. The service information were included in SERVICES.ORA and SNMP_RO.ORA file again. So I tried a Refresh Node from the OEM console and the error VD-4565 showed up again.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on an how I can manage a Linux database from an OEM 2.1 console?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello Peter,
I, alas do not have the answer for you. But... your symptom is EXACTLY LIKE MINE!!I was running OEM 2.0.4 and Oracle on a linux box (unfortunately, today I did something wrong and blew the database away!!!, I do not want to tell you how many hours I spend getting the database up, connected and communitcating with Windows NT box running OEM!) I made the switch from 2.0.4 to 2.1, and everything quit. More or less. I fixed my tnsnames.ora file on the NT side. That allowed me to connect. I got the Agent (sortof) running on the linux box and then I could discover the linux host computer name and domain, but it would not find ANY database. Although I could connect from the linux box, the nt box using oem (direct to db), sqlplus, and Access odbc!!! All listeners were there, etc. I did check the snmp*.ora files, and they would not discover anything (linux side) even though the LISTENER was listening, and tnsnames were naming and instances were instancing. My guess is yet another bug.
Sorry for long reply. Now I will RELOAD THE ENTIRE DATABASE AND APP AGAIN!! I so far have been totally unable to run on the liux side, net assist and net easy config, but I could sucessfully bypass those apps by correctly using and configuring initSID.ora, etc and the other *.ora files.
