Interactive PDF - Printing

Hello,
Using CS 4, I want to create an interactive PDF with multiple pages that have pop up notes and/or images. If the user wants to print a particular page that has these pop ups, will just that page print or will the base layer? Or will it print all pages in the PDF?
Thanks

Sure, you could do that fairly easily with just a bit JavaScript. It would have to be done by someone with Acrobat who receives the filled-in form. The text from the fields could be extracted and placed in a text file attachment that you create with JavaScript, and then extract the file attachment.
For the general methods you'd use, see:
createDataObject: http://livedocs.adobe.com/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/JS_API_AcroJS.88.450.html
exportDataObject: http://livedocs.adobe.com/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/JS_API_AcroJS.88.463.html
Another less flexible approach is to extract to a tab delimited text file: http://livedocs.adobe.com/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/JS_API_AcroJS.88.460.html
For this, you can specify just the fields you want to include, so you don't have to bother with all of the fields in the form being included.

  • InDesign CS3 Interactive PDF print question

I have created an InDesign document with interactive PDF elements, one of which is a layer with a button that covers the entire document size (11" x 8.5") and has a single page 11" x 8.5" PDF placed on the layer that is to be printed. This has been designated in the States palette / Button Options / General by selecting "Hidden but printable" in the "Visibility in PDF" dialog box. No Behaviours are added. This has worked beautifully.
My problem is that now my client wants to add a second page that will also print, and I can't seem to accomplish this. I have tried several things:
    – adding a second page to the original PDF placed on the layer under the button -- the second page does not print.
    – on the same layer, under the button placing a second, separate PDF of the new page directly under the originally placed PDF -- the second page does not print
    – adding a second layer just below the first, set up exactly the same as the original one described above with a PDF of the new page I want to print -- the second page does not print.
Is it possible to do what I want, and can anyone advise me? Thanks!

Carol, I did change a few things in the attached PDF that are different from the instructions that I first posted. After I re-read your post, you said that the image that you want the user to print would cover the entire page. In that case, you wouldn't need to have the second action of hiding the print images applied to the buttons for roll off. Those images are hidden when you click on the print image, and then you go back to the original state.
As for the sizes, the print images are the same size as the presentation portion of the PDF. The print images are hidden until a user would engage them. I have taken this approach one step further. In Acrobat, I have assigned an action for the button to bring up the image as well as engage the print dialog box. Then, once the printing is completed, the user returns to the original state of the presentation PDF, hiding the print image.
I have created this type of presentation for the scenario of having a user view a PDF if it were a slideshow (reverse type on dark background), but allowing the user to print from the PDF a page better suited for a laser printer (black type on white background).

  • Adobe Form - non-Interactive Pdf Print - Access to table cell

    Hi experts
I am new to Adobe Print Form (non-interactive flowed form) and I am desparately need your help.
I am merging table data from a context into a table on a form layout and then use function call to generate a print form and send it out as an email. Sofar, everything works fine - except one of the requirement that if , on any row, a cell value in column 1 > 5 (i.e. example), set the font color to red.
I tried all sort of ways (in JavaScript) - but cannot get hold of the cell to check the value. Please show me
    1) how to get to the cell in Javascript
    2) in What event that I must place the Javascript in
At the moment, I have the form layout as followed:
    Data
    | Report
    | | Table1
    | | | Header
    | | | | ...........H_Fd1
    | | | | ...........H_Fd2
    | | | Row
    | | | | ...........R_Fd1
    | | | | ...........R_Fd2
    etc...
There are no reference to "table" object in Adobe lc designer - If you have please also send me some
    Thanks
Points will be rewarded for any reply.

    Hi
JS to fetch a the value of a field in a table is
    xfa.resolveNode("form_name.subform_name.table_name.Row1["Row Index"].column_name[0]").rawValue;
You can write the code in the exit or validate event of the second column
    Thanks

  • Interactive PDF, Printing all text from within multi line scrolling field

I have an A4 form created in Indesign CS4 and made interactive in acrobat 9 pro on Mac with several fields and have a question.
I have a requirement for a number of the form fields to scroll in order to capture lengthy content if need be, my client also wants the ability to print the content in full from the fields if they so wish. However if the content is lengthy say filling more than the field area shows on screen how would this be printable?
    So :
A form is set up to show 3 lines of text and employs a scrollable field solution to accommodate infinite text entry
The user writes 6 lines of text (only 3 show on screen though due to the forced form field area)
They want to print a record for hard copy or distribution showing all 6 lines
I have just purchased the CS6 version with Acrobat X, but would like to solve this in with my previous version if possible, have only just installed CS6 and due to learning curve need to retain it in Acrobat 9 pro if possible.
    Thanks
    Matt HM

  • Indesign CS6 for windows 7 crashes when exporting interactive PDF (Print PDFs fine)

Any advice guys this is driving me nuts - was working up until a few weeks ago and after system rebuild from crash no longer working?

Hi Guys, thanks for the advice. I am assuming you disable and extension through the Extension Manager? The problem is its not listed under indesign - when I select Indesign and look at all the plugins they are all authored by adobe? Extensis is listed under my About Plugins Directory and seems to be working fine. I did find a comment on a blog somewhere about checking, unchecking or toggling the 'create tagged PDF' checkbox which occasionally works. Indesign often completes the PDF file then crashes and after I have force quit Indesign the PDF works fine once the OS has unlocked it from being written. Any other ideas? I have re installed indesign and suitcase - no luck. Its couldn't be an Acrobat Problem could it? Its seems to write the PDF and then hang for a while, then say it cannot save "filename".
    Thanks again for your time

  • View an Interactive PDF, but print from a print PDF version....possible?

We are in the process of creating interactive PDF catalogs (basic stuff, product sheets, charts, etc...) for our clients. The catalog has a tab navigation on the outside edges (to the different sections) as well as a button navigation system across the bottom  (zoom, home, next page, print, etc...). On the screen, it looks great, but to print it, well, isn't as great.
So, my question is... is it possible to have the INTERACTIVE PDF print function access a PRINT version of the same PDF, so that the client's customers can get a clean version that can be inserted into a binder, without all the navigation and tabs? The information needed is technical and accessed fairly often by the customers, usually without the benefit of having a computer or pad around to access the PDF.
I had seen this question earlier on the forums, but, I couldn't find it again, nor was the question answered.
    I appreciate the help.
    Thanks
    Chuck

Yes you will have to export layers from InDesign. but there's an important caveat - the 'print' layer options checkbox in InDesign does not translate into OCG printability in the PDF - it is used to set  visibility in the exported PDF, but every layer in the PDF will use the default 'print when visible' setting. You'll have to reconfigure them in Acrobat after export.

  • How to print a scrollable, interactive PDF file

I've had an interactive PDF application form built. Works great for the applicants, as boxes allow scrolling so that applicants can add detailed info where relevant. However, now that the completed applications are flowing in, I can't figure how to print them (as part of the application review process) so that they display/print all the content in the scrollable boxes. Am I missing something? Any assistance would be appreciated.

This is really a user question for whatever program you are using to print
the PDF forms - it's not really an issue of the PDF language.
Assuming you are using Adobe Acrobat, please post in our Acrobat forums.

  • InDesign CS5 or 5.5 interactive pdfs  - can I create a button for printing?

    Hello lovely InDesign experts.
I am creating an interactive pdf using CS 5.5 and would like to have a button on each page that, when pushed, opens a print window (so the user can print the page, or range of pages, if they want). I know you can do this to the finished pdf in Acrobat but would prefer to keep everything in InDesign if possible.
Thanking you very much in advance,
    Lisa

And if you're getting into doing stuff in Acrobat these two links are worth reading, the first here written by Bob himself, the second here a cool new way that has been developed, if you requested they add a print button to the list of what you can do and it's possible they probebly would.

  • How do I create a print button for use in Interactive PDF?

I have a document created in InDesign CS4 which I will be converting into an interactive PDF (which has various links added on a master page so they appear on every page), one of which I would like to be a "Print" button.
I know how to do this in Acrobat Pro, but I don't want to have to create a button in Acrobat and then copy/paste it onto all pages in my document. Surely there must be a way to create a button of this type in InDesign CS4. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, no. Print button functionality must be added in Acrobat.

  • Differences between PDF (Interactive) and PDF (Print)

What are the main differences between PDF (Interactive) and PDF (Print)?
Now it seems to me that PDF (Interactive) is limited version of PDF (Print).
Any links to read about this topic?
    Thank you in advance,
    Mykolas

There's actually quite a few differences between (Interactive) and (Print).
Here's a list of pointers written by Michael Ninness (previous product manager of InDesign and now working at Lynda.com) http://www.lynda.com/michaelninness
I just got premission from him to post this (Thanks Michael!):
Here is some info for you regarding what choices are being made under the hood when you choose File > Export > Adobe PDF (Interactive).
Things that just happen or are included, with no choice in the dialog box:
Hyperlinks, Bookmarks, Fast Web view, Compress Text and Line Art, Crop Image Data to Frames.
Things that are not included, with no choice in the dialog box:
Visible Guides/Grids, Hidden and Non-Printing Layers, Hidden and Non-Printing Objects, Marks & Bleeds, No Ink Manager or Simulate Overprint options.
    Things that you can choose:
Security Settings, Embed Page Thumbnails, Create Tagged PDF, Create Acrobat Layers, Initial View, Initial Layout, Open in Full Screen Mode, Page Transitions, Image compression and resolution.
    Other:
    Fonts: Subset 100%
    Color Conversion: Destination
    Destination: sRGB
Profile Inclusion Policy: Include Destination Profile
    Transparency Flattener: No Flattening
And lastly, Compatibility is set to Acrobat 9 (PDF 1.7). This last point is important, and largely explains the main reason we split Interactive PDF out as a separate export choice from Print PDF. When you export an interactive PDF from CS5, included media is now written out to the Rich Media Annotation Layer, which means this content is played back via the embedded Flash Player within Acrobat Pro 9 or Adobe Reader 9 or higher. In previous versions, this content was written out to the Screen Annotation Layer, which meant this content was played back via QuickTime. This has been a long-standing headache for end users as playback across platforms was often inconsistent, would frequently break when Apple updated QuickTime, etc.
Lastly, if you want to include rich media in your interactive PDFs (SWFs, audio and video), the only formats supported if you want to target Adobe PDF (Interactive) are MP3 for audio and FLV for video. Other file formats will need to be converted to these formats before you export to Interactive PDF. For video files, you’ll be able to convert to FLV with Adobe Media Encoder. For audio files, you can use any number for free audio conversion tools, including iTunes.

  • Non-visible buttons print in interactive PDF

How can I prevent non-visible form elements in an interactive PDF from printing? I have a button that is set to invisible in an interactive PDF based on a radio button being selected. However, when the PDF is printed, the invisible button on the screen prints on paper. How can I keep this invisible element from printing? I am in InD CS6.

This seems to be the thread I'm looking for. I'm building an interactive PDF in InD CS6. The form has lots of "dependancies" or "rules" built into the form, fields which show up depending on how the user fills out previous fields. Is there a way to have ONLY the visible fields print? (All my fields are set to be printable, but I need them to only be printable if they're visible.) The fields are set up currently so that they overlap each other, but only one field within each set of overlapping fields would be visible in the PDF.
If this isn't possible, it seems like the only way to make this PDF work is to move all fields so that nothing overlaps each other and have everything visible. Too bad that would defeat the whole purpose of my 10 page form which was to simplify/clarify a complex and varied process.
I appreciate any help on this. Thanks in advance.

  • PC user not able to print interactive PDF

    Hi,
We have an interactive pdf that was created in Indesign CS6 on a Mac. OS X10.8.5. It prints fine on all our printers. But our PC users either get an error message that they need to choose a printer, printer not found, or it prints mostly blank pages.
This is what one PC user told me... "If I indicate to print page 1 only.  It prints with no problem.  If I indicate, pages 1 through 5 or 2 through 5, I get a prompt that says unable to start print job, is printer available...and then a blank page comes out.  My printer is a HP Photosmart 8250."
Something about the interactive PDF not working on a non-postscript printer?
    What's up, please help.....
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks Dov. But because there are 40,000 people viewing these documents, we have no control over what kind of printer or version of Reader they are using. So it is our responsibility to make sure that the documents can print for everyone. We found that the buttons that were provided in CS InDesign 5.5 did not work when used in CS 6. I tried looking for days through other forums and Adobe help sections. So this bug needs to be reported to Adobe and worked out by them. We are moving towards interactive books - some that are 200 pages.
We deleted all buttons on the master pages and used only the line of copy as hyperlinks, and so far that seems to have worked... we printed the entire book on as many old chunck-a-chunck printers we could find and the problem was solved. If you check the link to these documents by mid week next week, the new files should be posted. We provide the final files to our client and they post it on their website for their employees to view and print out as needed.
Thanks agian everyone for your assitance in trying to figure this issue out. It was a mind blower.

  • Interactive PDF - Offset Printing

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can advise me on the best way to set up an Interactive PDF for offset printing? The underlying PDF is a high res PDF with bleed and trims. However, I'm not sure what happens with the form fields. Any thoughts?
    Mac 10.6.7
    InDesign CS5
    Acrobat Pro 9.4.4
    Cheers,
    Tricia

Form fields are a tricky one, as it depends on where you're ripping the separations. If you print to separations from Acrobat, the data in printable form fields will appear on the plates as part of the page content. However most hardware RIPs will either throw an error, or ignore form fields, buttons, etc. and just print the page content. in the PDF specification form fields, buttons and annotations are always RGB, so you can't for example have a text field with "cyan" text, it'll be the multi-plate equivalent shade of "blue". As a special case, in Acrobat the default black text fields are separated to a single plate (K) even though on screen they're RGB 0,0,0.
It's also important to make sure your underlying PDF is in the correct color space. Exporting to "PDF (Interactive)" from InDesign means you'll convert everything to DeviceRGB, but for offset you want to keep everything in (or convert to) CMYK, with or without spots, and presumably want to embed profile information too. You only have access to the "output" controls when you export to "PDF (Print)" - using that route you can still export your form fields and multimedia, but they'll remain in RGB no matter what you do.

I'm a Mac Pro OSX 10.8.5, not sure what OS the other designer has, but similar to me...
I do not know what version of Reader the users have. Varied versions most likely.
Also, I created the same kind of interactive document last year in CS 5.5 without an issue.
