Interactive template SWF

Hello, I am currently creating a interactive feature for my
company's website, where we would like our customers to come,
select one of our marketing tools templates, and be able to
customize their information using Input text boxes, colorpicker,
font selection, and in the end, I would like it to either email the
final product to our sales team. Basically I am looking for advice
on how we can execute the final "checkout" procedure, as I have
basically created the actual flash application. If anyone has any
information on what, how, or where I can get some information on
any of the information I might want to look at for creating this,
it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm glad this has come up in recent days; I was about to start a new thread on the same. A year ago, I built (at least within MY abilities) the mother of all Keynote presentations. It had Flash animations, audio, bulleted slides and many native Keynote transitions. Since then, I've turned to that file to jog my memory on construction issues when building new presentations.
Last week, I opened the original file, and everything still worked fine. Today, I've discovered I can no longer load .swf files into Keynote, and the .swf files in my original presentation no longer work. Has Apple changed something in recent software update?
It wouldn't be that big of an issue if I could get Flash to cooperate on QT exports. When I try to do so, it barks about requiring Flash 5, even if I've published the file as Flash 5.
I'm at a loss here. What are some workarounds for this? Is Flash completely useless with Keynote?
Steve, I agree with you; this IS playground BS. I never got the sense the two formats were competing.

Captivate 7 | Interaction template | Not working on tablets

Hello,
I have a problem with the interation templates provided in the Captivate 7.
Opening a blank project, I have insert a tab interactive template (ref screenshot below) from the option Insert > Interaction. After publishing project to HTML 5 the output is working fine on iPad. Later for the same project I have inserted some background and text within the interaction template and published again to HTML 5 and checked the output in the iPad and the interactions were not working as previously.

How do you enable zoom in an interactive PDF (SWF) file created in InDesign?

I'm putting together a scrapbook for a few friends in InDesign CS5. I added a page turn transition and enabled page curl when I saved it as a SWF file, but when I was viewing the project, because it's a SWF video file, I couldn't zoom in and read the notes on each page. Is there a way to add a zoom button or enable zooming another way? Or is there a way to add the page curl to an interactive PDF version?

Dynamically load content into a "template" swf from text file

I have a dream....
Well, I have a concept. I have not actively pursued Flash in
several years, though I've continued to have it in my arsenal. I've
not done much in the action scripting realm for a while though.
I am trying to create a template that will be used for about
100 different product pages.
It would have two tabs, basically, 2 different graphical
button sets. One will have up to 4 links to similar products, each
tab will be on the side of a square, and I need the ability to not
display a tab if there is no actual link.
As for the other tab, Its a menu that consists of a series of
lines. This can be an external menu, I just need a way to have
flash load the right menu. This menu, when you mouse over a line,
the name of the product appears, as well as a product image that
gets loaded with the menu. The product images would be external,
allowing me to simply replace an image if a new higher end version
of the product comes out.
So, I am totally not an actionscripter. Looks like I need to
load variables from an external file. Can I set a property in the
flash code on the html that tells the movie what dataset to grab
from?

A possible third menu would be text driven, and would use
html to link to various items.
This is a static site, so urls will be fixed.
Is it best to build a php page that serves up data for a
single item, or do one big text file with all 100 or so items? Is
that even possible?
My Flash since MX is very rusty. I am using Flash Pro8. I
would love to create a single file so modifications are to the text
files, unless a new item is released, then it's updating a single
flash menu and updating the text file.

well sorry there fanmap - but I don't think you're going to
be able to get this to work. here's why: the link points to a php
file - which gathers dynamic info from a DB - the return from the
php is generating a string that is based on the DOM and
'constructs' a javascript method that in turn writes to the html
document. although we can embed html into a textField in Flash
there are a limited number of supported html tags - and JS methods
will not operate internally. in addition, (i'm not certain someone
correct this if i'm off) there's no way to 'change' the output of
the php call, therefore you will not be able to read the return
because it is designed to use the DOM and write solely to the
current document. Even if you were to access the JS method from the
swf file (which one can) it will still only write the content of
the php return to the html document - and the output is not
compatible with the textField class.

InDesign Interactive PDF/SWF/HTML

In InDesign, I'm trying to make it so an object (rectangular frame) moves down the page as you scroll as a .swf/html/interactive pdf (like the menu bar on the left here: http://peeltheorange.com/#what-we-do) THANKS!

It can't be done in InDesign, as far as I can tell. Definitely not possible in interactive PDF. Might be possible in a SWF but not from InDesign. You'd have to be a Flash Professional guru do to it in SWF perhaps. Most likely to accomplish in HTML, but NOT from InDesign. Time to go for Dreamweaver or Muse.

Skin interaction with swf file

When you import a swf into captivate from flash, can you have
the navigation buttons in the "skin" interact with the swf file?
For example, say I made a popup in flash; when the user clicks on
the link, the next button disappears - not allowing them to
continue until they finish the actions on the flash page. Can you
do that? Thanks.

I don't think it's a permission problem, but somehow the
Flash Player thinks (I think) the stream is coming from another
domain. With me a error pops up that goes like this:

Have you tried a super-simple <object>-style embed of
your video?
I really do think it's the Adobe-AC-JS-stuff that's messing
things up?
You could instead consider using swfobject

But first I think you should try an <object>-embed to
see if it's the JS or the Flash that's messing things up.

HTML/javascript interaction with swf content - can I call swf functions from JS?

Hi,
I've created an AIR application where the
intialWindow.content is a HTML page / JavaScript application. On
this HTML page I want to include some SWF content as a plugin (a
Flex 3 app), so I have an object tag.
From my SWF I can call out to JavaScript using
flash.external.ExternalInterface fine. I can also call methods
within the AIR and Flex APIs via the window or runtime objects.
However, if I try to call methods within my SWF from
JavaScript, nothing happens. Further, I can pass a function
reference from my SWF to JavaScript (via ExternalInterface), and
while I can see a valid function reference in JavaScript, calling
it doesn't call the function within the SWF.
Is this not supported? Or is this something else, like an
applicationDomain issue? My SWF object is loaded via the app:/ uri,
so I didn't think it would be that.

which by my reading means that none of this should work,
although it clearly does.

How can I pubish SWF interactive magazine to flash based website? It's not working!

I hope someone can help me launch my first interactive magazine (SWF) to our website with ID 5. Okay, my hard copy mag came out great so then I started on the interactive edition. Everything was going swell with adding 3 short videos ( FLV ) and creating 3 slide shows. When I previewed it by exporting to SWF I could preview it in my browser fine. Page curls, fade in words (although the “hide until animated” options only works in two out of about 7 instances. I then followed instructions from another Adobe exercise, exported it to Flash, went to Publish Settings, but of course when I pressed “publish” I didn’t get the same result as the teacher…I got an error message about text. I searched a forum with the same message I got and saw that making sure my text setting was set for Classic, solved someone else’s problem. So I did and was able to “publish”. But now, when I open either the SWF or HTML file, it’ just rapidly repeating the 12 pages in my file in a loop!

I have spent most of the summer self teaching myself InDesign CS5 (not easy!) and am excited to be able to put out an interactive SWF file that can be opened in a Flash player through our Flash based website. I feel like I’m just inches away for launch but now I’m getting frustrated. Isn’t this going to be possible?
Also, when I publish it in Flash, it creates a SWF file AND an HTML file. But on our website, I have only one option to make a link to a document OR an outside link to open a file. How does that work?

Originally, I exported the file to SWF (player) and just tried to link that file from our flash based website. It opens fine, page curls fine, slide shows fine, but when you click on the photos with videos, page 5 (father and baby) and two others, the image disappears and only a white comes up to fill that area.

Rob, here is where i have very limited knowledge: As I said we use a flash based (read very user friendly) web hosting company. When I am in the back end to upload the swf file, I have only one option - "attach a video, attach a document, attach a link" so how would I upload a "folder" with more than one item to the server?
I thought it would be considered a video since the SWF file says SWF movie, but when I when i try to upload as a video, it doesn't come up as importable. (am i sounding really stupid?) Maybe I should admit that yes, I'm an ID5 newbie AND yes, I'm no spring chicken but I have been working in CS2,3,4 for several years and now 5 and am quite proficient in the create aspect of Adobe products. It's just now the technical part about how to actually get my in work published to the site.There isn't anyone else in my company able to help me so I have to reach out to this forum!
I love ID and this is just my first effort but I'm looking forward to creating many more interactive magazines for my company.

am norwegian and working with flash 8 (yes, I a about to upgrade to
cs4 in the near future) and the norwegian alphabet has specific
characters...is it possible to change the languag in the component?

Hi Conrad!
As you have no doubt already realized, using the Learning
Interaction templates that are available in Flash MX / MX2004 and 8
will not work at all in Presenter content.
The coding methods conflict while playing back within the
Breeze environment and I
think it has to do with the _dropTarget property as part of
the interaction's codebase. The _dropTarget method is NOT supported
in Breeze, but the hitTest() method IS!
I have written a few drag and drop exercises that do work
within Breeze content, and you have to use the hitTest() method to
accomplish it.
As you already have discovered, the bottom line is that the
learning components were intended to be "stand alone" objects that
could be incorporated into a web page (or even a CD as these
objects are nothing more than swf files). Aside from the fact that
the prebuilt/preconfigured learning objects in flash don't always
work in Breeze, in my mind, the bigger question here is the ability
(or more accurately) the inability to connect these SCO's to an LMS
for tracking. As stand alone objects, they're actually pretty
handy...but not in Breeze.
I realize this doesn't help much with what you're trying to
do, but from my perspective, you're better off creating your own
drag n' drops.
I've got a bunch of examples to share if you'd like to take a

How to embed interactive flash in PDF

I am trying to place an interactive Flash .swf file into a
PDF. I don't want it to just play through like a movie. I need
people to be able to click through it, and interact with it as if
it. There are, for example, 4 matching problems. So a person will
match for the question in problem 1, then click a button to see if
they got them right or wrong, then click next to go to the next
question. We've gotten it so that you can do all the interaction in
the PDF, but it first playes through all the questions and actions.
Basically it playes through it like a movie. Does anyone know how
to get it so it doesn't play through like a movie and instead is
just an interactive piece? Sorry that this is really
confusing.

Child .swf controlling parent timeline

Hello Captivate Heroes,
I've searched around, and can't seem to find any solid info on an issue my team is having. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Javascript, so I apologize if this question is too basic for this forum.
Is it possible for an embedded .swf (created in Captivate) to control the main timeline in a parent .swf? Consider the example below:
1) This window is an embedded .swf (another captivate file, which I’ll refer to as the “child”) that has an interactive walkthrough. It loads and begins playing immediately. I want users to complete this module and all interactions in it before continuing to the next slide in the “parent” file. Essentially, I want either the child or the parent timeline to play, but never both at the same time.
2) This is our normal continue button, and I don’t want it appearing until 1 has been completed.
My solution was to add a javascript call on the first slide of the child file that tells the parent file to pause its timeline (something like _root.rdcmdPause=1;). Then, do the opposite on the last child slide ( _root.rdcmdResume=1;). In this way, the parent slide would essentially pause on its first frame (which doesn’t have an active continue button) while the child animation continues to play. However, this isn’t working. It’s been a really long time since I’ve scripted, so I’m very rusty. Is that the proper way to manipulate parent variables in a child file? Do you have any other ideas on how to accomplish this task?
I have a backup solution -- providing a "password" at the end of the child animation, which users can use to unlock the continue button. I'd rather use a more graceful solution

Hi Jamie,
I don't think JavaScript is going to help you here. You need to be doing this in ActionScript 3.
For the non-scripting part, you can control the Captivate movie using system variables. To pause the main slide, you could assign rdcmdPause=1 on the Slide Entry action. You may want to adjust the slide transition to none so that it won't look faded out when it pauses the movie. You can also show/hide items on the slide using the timeline, but it sounds like you won't really know when the Learner will be done with the interactive child .swf.
From what you described, it sounds like the Child .swf (#1) needs to communicate with other objects on the slide... mainly the continue button (#2). In order to do that you'll most likely need to make the child .swf #1 into a widget so that it can communicate with the main movie and other objects on the slide. I would suggest 3 possibilities:
1. Learn to use a widget framework such as Widget Factory or CpGears to make this possible
2. Take a look at the Infosemantics Event Handler Widget. Not sure if it will meet all your needs, but it's worth a look.
3. Hire a Captivate Widget Developer to make this possible... and yes I am a Widget Developer (shameless plug )

Some loaded SWFs may not be compatible with Flex. Try making a simpler SWF (like one that just draws a circle where you click) and see if it can be loaded and interacted with.

Creating "compiled" swf?

Aloha!
It's been many, many moons since I've worked with Flash ( Flash 5, Circa 2001 eek! ) and I'm trying to get to grips with the new version. Apologies for anything that might seem "obvious" to full-time flash developers, I’ve never used the Creative Cloud version before and a lot has changed!
Background:
I have a PHP-based system that produces adverts for work - generating a custom XML file for the FLA/SWF to use, putting the images into the advert and creating the resource folders.
This runs from a CSV, so that multiple product adverts can be generated quickly and easily without having to go through and modify each advert manually in Flash (previously a massively labour-intensive task for a team of people). The output of all the advert folder generation and file creation etc. at present is then zipped up and provided to the team to download onto their computer.
Prelude to issue:
In my younger days I would have passed output through a command-line processor on my linux servers to compile into one instance - The advert platform does not allow resource files to be uploaded with it, only a single SWF. At the moment, the SWF requires the resource files in the images and xml folders
What I’ve tried:
I’ve built the PHP system that generates all the folders, resource files and copies in the template swf. This then displays fine in the browser.
Folder structure:

|__xml
     |_ banner.xml
I’ve had a look online at some of the CC resources and they suggest that a lot of things now happen with the flash javascript interface - from what I’ve seen and some of the example code it appears that this deals a lot with generating content inside the flash instance based on actions etc. That’s not really what I’m after at this point.
My question:
Is there a command-line utility / series of switches to pull the SWF into a "compiled version" or does the latest version of flash require these resource files?
Again, I’ve got no background in the latest version of the system and when I used to do manipulation like this things were vastly different!
If it means that I have to run the scripting on the folders to generate the files once the team have downloaded it from the server that’s fine - I’m just not sure of how to pull this together at the moment.
I looked at the possibility of looping through all the folders generated to "compile" the SWF - I've not seen anything to give a definitive answer as to if this is possilbe as yet.

When I read posts like this where you have issues getting a unique solution to work, I always want to go back to the solution.
You have to create seperate swfs because you're using unique images?
Did you include Air in your options? Servers are the last place you should use the cpu. Air gives you software access to the computer. You can download files from anywhere, use files from the computer, process them using the computer's cpu (no cost, no time concerns), save the generated files to the computer and/or upload them to wherever. Air can inspect the files created too.
Adobe Edge tools are for work creating html, css rwd, html5 animations.

Create an interactive digital brochure

Which of the Adobe Suite applications is best suited to create an interactive digital brochure? I am new to Creative Coud and fairly new to most of the Adobe Apps but wanting to learn. Indesign or Illustrator plus which others?
I want to be able to view brochure on desktop and mobile platforms and I want the brochure to include page flips, video, animation, etc.

You can't do all of those things in the same kind of digital file. You can choose InDesign. Your choices are interactive PDF, SWF or a tablet app with Digital Publishing Suite. You need to investigate which of those features work with which output.

Drag and Drop Interaction - Drops Items

I am using the new Interaction template for Drag and Drops. This seems to work great but there is one thing I am struggling to do.
Is there anyway you can restirct how many items can be placed on a drop zone? At the moment you can drop more than one item to a drop zone and they overlap. My ideal solution would be that you can only drap one item to a zone or that when you drop an item to an area that already has one there, that it replaces it with the new one that was just dropped.
