Interdepartment connectivity via fiber optics, which wquipment to use

I have given a task to interconnect department with one another via fiber optics.
This means there will be a core switch in a server room which will interconnect these departments. The each departments are away from server room approx 900 meters and 1500 meters. Kindly tell me which fiber optics cable to use ( single mode or multi mode) and which cisco switch to use in the in the core ( server room) and in the departments (one deptt is 900 m and other is 1500 meters away from server room) . kindly also tell me which fiber optics module to use in the switch and which connector.

Since in both cases you are well within the reach of multimode fiber, it makes no sense to look any further, as it is the most cost effective solution unless you need 10 gigabit performance.
As to what switches to use, there are a lot of variables once you get past the basic requirement here of having of having two optical ports on the one in the server room, and one optical port for the other two. Other considerations are how many ports do you need in the server room, and in each of the two departments. Then features, performance, and reliability factors come into play, along with budget.
If you don't need a lot of ports, and you are looking at normal office levels of traffic, 3560's might be a good choice. You could put a second one in the server room, and duel home the servers and department switches to them to add redundancy. That would make a single switch failure unlikely to take out the whole network at one time. One the other hand if you need hundreds of ports, have a mission critical situation, or expect intensive levels of data traffic, then you will need to look at high end switches such at the 4500 and 6500 series.

  • Fiber optics and Network Security

Just changed internet providers and wondering about security. I have not changed my settings from my previous set up. I am running a Router into two Airport expresses and a G4 file server running 10.4.11 my wireless network is password protected as well as all my computers and router. I even have my sharing and access restricted to just my network computers. I guess my question is I have heard that with the new Light Band or Fiber optics which ever you prefer to call it may allow other users on your same node to access your network. What I want to know is
    1. How can I check who has been accessing my network if anyone
    2. What steps can I take to secure it the best way possible specifically maybe restricting access by mac address? Or is that just overkill?
3, Lastly Since my wireless shows up on my computers how can I see if it is visible to anyone else I do have closed network selected.
    Thanks,
    JJ

Assuming that your router is running NAT, you shouldn't have too much to worry about.
You'll know if you're running NAT because your machine will have an IP address like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x.
The NAT device essentially separates the network into two logical parts - there's the big, bad public internet part, and a separate, private internal part.
The fiber connection will, ultimately, link to the public side and that will be visible to other people on the network, but the private, internal part will only be visible to systems on that network.
In order for any device on the public side of the NAT to get to a machine on the private side you have to configure port forwarding in the router. If you haven't done that you don't have too much to worry about (at least from the general internet getting to your systems).
Note that none of the above is specific to fiber connections. It's exactly the same for cable and other broadband media.
The internal network, though, is a different matter, especially since you're running wireless.
    1. How can I check who has been accessing my network if anyone
Check your router logs. It should log every time a device connects to the internal network and requests an IP address from the DHCP server.
    2. What steps can I take to secure it the best way possible specifically maybe restricting access by mac address? Or is that just overkill?
MAC address locking is another layer of security that can make it harder for a malicious user to get on the network. Like most things, though, it isn't an absolute but the harder you make it, the more likely they are to move onto an easier target.
3, Lastly Since my wireless shows up on my computers how can I see if it is visible to anyone else I do have closed network selected.
That's a good question. Part of the answer is trust - if you've selected a closed network then you have to trust that the router isn't broadcasting its name.
The easiest way to tell is to bring in some device that's never connected to the network and see whether it can see the network or not. Be aware, though, that this is like MAC addressing - it doesn't guarantee security, it's just another layer

  • Internet connection via Airport Extreme/router thats not working, why?

I have been having problems with the internet connection via Airport Extreme which I find it a bit unusual and its still driving me nuts! This is what happened:
I have lost my internet connection last Sunday evening upon my return from a weekend away from home. The last time I have used the internet connection on my macbook was the previous Friday morning. Prior to the apparent disconnection on Sunday, I have always used my internet connection wirelessly through Airport Extreme (that is connected via ethernet cable to the NETGEAR DG834v2 ADSL modem which had worked beautifully until the problem arose on my return). This wireless internet connection allowed me to surf the internet anywhere in my home.
However, upon the successful re-connection to the internet via the modem router, I have discovered several new problems. I have tried to set up the internet connection wirelessly again but instead the following happened:
    1. Router (Netgear) drops ADSL connection and cannot reconnect when connected to airport via Ethernet. (which is the case when using airport wireless).
    2. Router connects to ADSL fine when computer is connected to it via Ethernet. (However, router disconnects when magsafe power adapter is taken out for some inexplicable reason!)
    3. Router connects to ADSL fine when nothing is connected to the router (ie. No Ethernet connections)
    4. Router connects to ADSL fine when connected to airport via Ethernet and computer is connected to airport via Ethernet.
So from the above, I cannot connect to the internet properly whether wirelessly or not so I suspect it could be faulty router or could it be airport extreme? I have asked my ISP for an explanation and all they have said is that it cannot be the mis-configuration but could be to do with the power adaptors or the way plugs are set up and suggested I take out all the power plugs (and power surge protector) out to switch everything off, the macbook, router, printer and airport extreme. However, when I have re-plugged them all back in, the problems I have described above still persists!
Would appreciate any help if anyone here recognises why this is the case and what seems to be the cause of this. If so, what should I do? Though I have written back to my ISP again yesterday for more help so im waiting to hear from them...
    Thanks

  • I upgraded to Fiber Optic today and now my ipad mini won't connect to the internet although it shows a signal

As the title says, we changed to fiber optics today (yay! so speedy) and all our devices (Macbooks, iphones) connect just fine.  My ipad mini (about 1 year old) won't connect although it finds the network on the airport effertlessly and shows full signal bars as if it is connected.  For all intents and purposes it looks like it is connected, but it isn't.  I have done all the usual - turned on and off (router and device), forgotten network, renewed network lease, reset network settings, reset all settings, etc. Everthing! Still not working. Help please!!!!!!

    Hello Tom,
So this is the Airport Forum.  Hence when you were discussing your "Airport", one assumes you are referring to the Airport Extreme or Airport Express  (ie - http://www.apple.com/airport-extreme/ or http://www.apple.com/airport-express/).  It is slightly confusing when Apple refers to the Airport being the wireless in devices as well as their wireless routers.
It would help us if you told us what type of connection, for instance I live in the UK and have Fibre Optic (to cabinet) and have a cable modem from Virgin Media, which I have then connected (via ethernet) an Apple Airport Extreme (6th Gen) to distribute the internet connection and my local LAN.
Maybe you had ADSL prior and are now on Fibre via cable?

  • Can't see others in iChat over Fiber Optic connection

This was a strange, recent occurence. For the past few years, those of us on Macs (G5's and a PowerBook with latest OS and updates) have been able to communicate via iChat. With new offices, most Mac users went to the new building. I'm still in the old building where the network server is kept. Once the others moved, we are no longer able to see each other via iChat. The only exception are two stations in the same office which share the same Ethenet wall connection.
Bringing any station back into the old building and connecting to the network will allow this station and my station to see each other, so I've narrowed the situation to our cable connection from the new building to the network server here in the old building. The cable used to bridge the two buildings is a Belkin 3 meter Multimode LC/ST Duplex Fiber Optic Cable.
I am able to see other Macs on the network through the Finder. I've just lost iChat and VNC capabilities since we've gone to this connection. If anyone has any ideas on how to correct the situation, whether they be adjustments to the Macs' Network settings or ideas of proven alternatives to the connection, all would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi DrVvack,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
It is likely that the computers in the new building are in a different subnet of the LAN
Lets say you are at 192.168.1.100.
Others in your building also start 192.168.1.xxx
The other building is likely to be on a router for that building. Now the router is probably at an IP that is in the same group as your computer - but it will be issuing IPs of it's own.
Now a bit like street numbers this other router could be using a similar set of IP addresses (192.168.1.xxx) but it is the IPs in relation to the original routing device that makes a difference.
You can get around this by creating a Virtual Private Network then the Bonjour side of iChat will see everyone.
Another option is to have the second router in Bridge mode or Access point mode (not routing) and have everyone have an IP from the original device.

  • Audigy 4 Pro - can only get 2 channel sound via SPDIF/optical connecti

I have two PC's, one with an Audigy 4 Pro and one with an Audigy 2 Platinum (A2P), I have my 5. speakers hooked up to the A2P and the A4P connected via the SPDIF to the A2P, I would expect to get 5. - both are setup to use 5. speakers, (I know that as a standard Digital coax/optical connections should handle multi speaker configs my entire A/V sound system (7. Dolby) uses optical and coax and it works fine).
If I run the channel test on the Audigy 4 I can get nothing but sound through the left and right speakers, if I run the test on the Audigy 2 (speakers direct connected) the sound is fine, if I reconnect the speakers to my Audigy 4 I get sound on all speakers so it looks like its an issue with the SPDIF and optical inputs (I tried both).
I have emailed tech support, I'm waiting for them to come back and tell me that the Audigy 4 cannot transmit more than two channels down the SPDIF/optical outs, thats my suspicion anyway, if that is the case then I'm not going to be a happy man and the Audigy will be going back to the store. Could be a driver problem of course as I cant believe they would implement Dolby and THX and only transmit two channels on the optical outs, that would be a bit dumb considering the primary use for digital connections is sound system interconnects.
Anyone with any ideas about this let me know, perhaps theres a hidden setting somewhere or a registry setting that switches the digital outs to carry all signals.

Just before everyone kicks off, heres a response I got from a tech guy at Creative themselves.
If you connect speakers to your sound card using a digital cable
(RCA/SPDIF or optical) then the software speaker test will only output
from two speakers. The reason for this is that the speaker test signal is
not in AC3 nor DTS format.
The signal on a digital connection is either
Optical SPDIF - which is either Stereo PCM signal or AC-3/DTS Bitstream
RCA SPDIF - which is either Stereo PCM signal or AC-3/DTS Bitstream
If you play AC3 (Dolby Digital) or DTS encoded signals, the amplifier
decodes this and outputs it to all 6 speakers (5 satellites & subwoofer)
    discretely.
When playing back stereo signals (such as Wav/CD Audio or MP3/WMA files)
the amplifier may generate 5. output based on the incoming stereo PCM
signal, provided Dolby Pro Logic decoding is available and activated.
Therefore the speaker test should not be relied on when using RCA or
    Optical digital connections.
This applies to all speaker systems equipped with RCA or Optical digital
    connections.
This makes sense to me and I'm pretty happy with it, basically as the reply says above the speaker test does not encode to AC3 hence if you hook two Audigys together and run the test you only get 2 channel output, if you play a DVD which is AC3/DTS encoded on one Audigy and listen to speakers hooked up to the other when both Audigys are connected via SPDIF or optical you should in theory get full playback on all speakers. Hopefully
    Cheers
    Simon

  • Which is better for AUDIO: HDMI or the Digital Optical Fiber Optic Toslink Audio Cable?

Is there a difference in Audio performance between your standard HDMI hook up (for my Blue Ray Player) or adding the Digital Optical Fiber Optic Toslink Audio Cable. Which will sound better????
    Please help...
    Thank you for your time!!!

Well that is huge debate here. My opinion is HDMI cables are WAY over priced for what they are. Do not be lead to believe you have to have a 100 dollar hdmi cable, I think 50 is crazy high myself. My only concern is getting one so cheap that it might have poor connections or not last. Also if you run it in a wall it has to be rated for that.
I have a Rocketfish cable and it works fine. My guess would be the dynex cables are fine too. And if your not buying it from Best Buy there are other options as well.
Something else to keep in mind as well. If you only have one HDMI device and you hook it up to your reciever using HDMI you will need two cables for one device. The one that runs to the Reciever and then the one from the reciever to the tv. If you use an Optical cable you only need the one HDMI cable. Run the HDMI cable from the blu ray to the tv, and the optical line from the player to the reciever. This will give you 5.1 dolby or dts through the reciever and also sound through the tv since HDMI carries sound as well as video.
But if money (for cables) was not an issue the HDMI cable supposedly can offer the best sound quality of the two.

  • I receive a not connected to the internet message several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via cable modem.. When I input my password to enter network preferences, the connection re-establishes.

I receive a "not connected to the internet message" several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via a cable modem. Software/firmware is up to date on the iMac (OSX 10.6.8)  and Tme Capsule(7.5.2). Browser is Safari 5.1.
When I input my password at the prompt to enter network preferences, all the lights go green (ie... ethernet, ISP etc.) and the connection re-establishes immediately and states "the connection appears to be working normally".
It more of a nuisance than anything and seems to have started ocurring over the past couple of months. I also have a windows XP box also connected to the same cable modem that I never have internet connectivity issues with. I've verified all the physical aspects of the connections and can't see any evidence of any actual drops in the modem logs. I suspect it is just an intermittent communication loss between the Imac and the Time Capsule, but I am not very familiar with Mac equipment yet.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and what you did (if anything) to resolve it?
    Thanks.

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

I just purchased the 2TB TC and set it up on bridge mode to my att verse which is connected via ethernet cable.  The TC is continually blinking amber and an error message states that a wireless network cannot be found but the uverse is functioning great.  The network name I assigned to the TC is also not appearing among available networks.  How do I remedy this, please?

What OS on the computer you are using to setup the TC?
Did you turn on ipv6 for wireless to link-local... this is essential for network access now??
Try power cycling the network.. start up in correct order.. uverse.. 2min wait.. TC.. 2min wait.. computer.
No luck factory reset and start over. Use ethernet cable as well to the computer to help it.

  • I recently bought an Airport extreme, while I was living in Japan, and had a fiber optic modem. The Airport connected fine and I had wi-fi I moved back to the US, and when I got my docsis(?) modem from COX, it  wont work with my airport extreme help!

Basically had APxtreme working with fiber optic in Japan, got to the states with Docsis(cisco) modem and my APxtreme doesnt work now. Tried forever, and it just didnt work, I had a yellow light for internet on airport utility with a green light for the APxtreme? Still nothing workey....

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.
