Interesting RealPlayer crash + sleep failure -- what happened?

I see plenty of computer crashes and usually it's just reset, and move on. But this one got me curious, and I wonder what other forums users think. Here is what I observed.
I was listening to an NPR story on RealPlayer. I put it on pause to watch a TV show. I dimmed the screen to black. The powerbook was plugged in.
The powerbook was set to sleep after 1 hour. After the TV show, I went to go work on my Powerbook again, and it was a little over an hour. The screen was completely blank. (You know how even with the backlight off, you can still see the image? That was not visible.) I pushed F2 (increase brightness), nothing happened. The front status indicator shows the powerbook is not asleep.
I push a bunch of keys and generally try to wake up the PB. Nothing. I go to another computer and ssh in. That works. I check the process list. RealPlayer has eaten a hours of CPU time, and the system reports it has been active since "31Dec69", a.k.a. the beginning of time.
I try to kill realplayer with signal 9. No change. I keep trying, and read the man page for kill in case the signals are different on the mac (v. linux) and I just don't know it. They aren't. In the process list reaplayer is now showing up as "(RealPlayer)" but won't go away.
Feeling the computer, I can tell it's very hot, like it has been overheating. Particularly near the microphone it's extremely hot, but the fans are barely on.
A second later, as I'm typing in a command on the shell, the connection dies. The system is no longer responsive at all, I reset it. As it reboots, the fans come on strongly (not max, but more than a normal boot).
Ok, now here's my guess at an explanation:
When the system tried to sleep after 1 hr, RealPlayer stopped it, and a race condition started. That race condition kept the system alive, the processor at 100%, and because of some weirdness with the sleep process, it kept the fans from coming on.
The system heated up (while I was watching House MD) and the fans never kicked in. I got back to the PB just in time to start working with it before the processor went critical and shut itself down to prevent melting. While I was in the ssh session, a hardware sensor tripped, stopped the processor, and that was that.
Support? Alternative explanations? What was this?

  • When (Not If) My Macbook HD crashes...What Happens to My Applications?

I have one of the lucky HD's that will die soon. What happens to my applications -- specifically ones with license numbers -- when either my HD crashes or I get a new HD? What if I've paid for and downloaded applications and don't have a disk...and then I can't reinstall on my new HD because the license key is on my dead HD?
I'm backing up files right now to Mozy...it's going to take another 24 hours...but then the question of my apps hit me.
    Thanks for your replies.

    Good morning,
IF your Hard Drive does crash, anything contained on the drive will be potentially lost, this includes personal data files, applications, serial numbers, preferences, and so on. To prevent this data loss you should back up all important information, such as personal data files, serial numbers, preferences to either your [.Mac|http://www.mac.com] Account or other backup source to insure that you can continue to use your computer as normal.
Most applications can be recovered through the developer's site (non-commercial) and they will most of the time email you your license information back to the address you have registered with them so it isn't that large of a deal, however, backups are always important!
    Hope this helps! 

  • HD crashed today. What happens to old one??

My 500GB HD was making a loud clicking noise this morning and it wouldn't wake up. After a bunch of diagnostic tries with Apple support on the phone, they told me to take it to my local Apple store. The final diagnoses was as suspected, a complete HD failure. I have been using Backup and backing up the "Home" folder to an external firewire HD and the "preferences"? to .mac as recommended by the Backup program. So it appears as though I have my data. I learned today that I made a fairly big mistake by not backing up the entire HD as I have to reinstall all my applications. I am somewhat new to Mac and thought by backing up my Home folder as recommended, I would start right up exactly as my system was. Lesson learned. My question is, what guarantee is there that my old HD and its' data is going to be destroyed? Does anyone know what Apple does with the old HD? I tried to get them to let me keep it but they said they have to return it to Apple. I have a close friend that designs HD's and I wanted to send it to his lab so that he could dissect it and copy the data onto a new drive for me. The store has to order the new HD and so I have a day or two to go back into the store and take the computer somewhere else (as recommended by the Genius). He told me that he would have to charge me full list for a new HD if I wanted to keep my old one ($400+/-) and that I could buy one from an independent shop for a lot less and have the work done there. Is that what most people are doing in order to protect their old data? I'm an Apple fan but I am uncomfortable with his recommendation. I paid for Apple Care and now I am being told that in order to keep my old HD I need to go elsewhere for service.
Thanks for any info or advice,
    Dave

    Hi David MacArthur!
Being located in the D.C. area, you certainly have valid and noteworthy concerns. Thanks.
Did you try starting it up in Target Disk Mode?
Sometimes that's possible, and is a last-minute method of retrieving unique data (copy it over to another Mac) prior to total failure of a hard drive. I would NOT waste the effort to retrieve applications - what if they're already corrupted? It might be worth the effort to try and erase the failed drive via that procedure.
As to the Genius' comments, the fact is that Apple does not appear (I've asked in the past at several of the Apple Stores) to normally sell/install replacement hard drives (except perhaps now for the Mac Pro), but that work is usually contracted out - to the very same oufit you might hire (and without the guaranteed addition of an Apple markup).
A failed drive would be "returned" [perhaps not in fact, but on account] to its manufacturer in exchange for an adjustment to Apple's account, probably based on an incentive/dis-incentive formula of some sort that is contained in the supply contract between the two companies. That (contract provisions) is the only way Apple would have to encourage and enforce quality product from its suppliers, while simultaneously minimizing the cost for Apple's consumers.
With the assumptions that internal corporate/store Apple must have about the same hard drive failure rate as do the rest of us Mac users, that failed drives are handled not by individual users but by IT staff or through contract, and that it would be highly unlikely that Apple ships all its own failed drives to a central location where they are melted into a big blob, then it would seem that it would be in Apple's self-interest to be protecting their own sensitive data [surely more sensitive than mine is] through proper secure handling of all failed drives. If not, how would they be preventing an individual case of mistaken handling? As to the printed warning language, I expect it most likely exists mainly in an effort to limit legal liability and legal defense expense.
As for increasing privacy, due to proven known issues regarding the vulnerability of one's trash, I for one am now cross-cut shredding all home and business printed trash, mail and yes, even envelopes. And, yes, it can still be recycled after that point.

  • Macbook Air, Logic board failure, what happens to data?

    Hello,
My Macbook Air died today with 90% battery and will no longer turn on. SMC and PRAM reset did nothing, it's completely unresponsive. I think it's a logic board failure. I have a question regarding a repair with Apple; I realise they will replace the logic board inside my computer with a new (or refurbished) board and the faulty one will be shipped to Apple. Considering the Macbook Air has flash memory on the board will this mean my data is now unrecoverable? I have everything backed up, I'm not worried. I have some err personal photo's of me and my partner in iPhoto and I'm wondering what will happen to the sensitive data.
Thanks for dealing with this lets say awkawrd topic

I don't think that your flash memory files are unrecoverable. That's because the logic board of the MacBook Air hasn't got the flash memory soldered. However, I don't know if Apple will replace the logic board, "recycling" your flash memory, or if they will install a whole new logic board replacing the flash memory, although the first option makes more sense and it would be the normal option.
Anyway, as you have a backup on an external drive, you don't have to worry about that

  • I got the updates icon in the middle off the appstore, and now crashed that. What happens?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Go to Settings>iTunes and App stores and sign out and sign back in
    - Reset network settings

  • HT4796 what happens to the transferred files when the migration aborts?

My migration aborted after an hour because the windows computer went to sleep.  What happened to the files that already transferred?  Where are they stored during the transfer?  The mac is mtn lion.

    Look in /var/folders
    In my case /var/folders/zz/blahblahlbah/T/.XMSandbox-tmp/Users/userid/Root
    rebooting got rid of them

  • My system crashed...if I post my report, can someone tell me what happened?

My relatively new 2010 MBP 15" 2.66 i7 8GB RAM w/ the anti-glare screen (trying to include all the info, just in case) crashed. First, it wouldn't wake from sleep. That happens from time to time, sure. But this time, it didn't even sleep when I closed it. I didn't notice and slipped it into my bag, taking it with me to class. When I got to my class to take out my machine, I unzipped it and felt a ton of heat rush out, noticing the fans on the computer were running at full power. My MBP was HOT! I held the power button to shut it off (just instinct, don't know if that'd help anything) and let it cool. I started it up a few minutes later, and here I am writing this.
I've been having issues with flash videos... On any site, the videos sometimes pause as the audio plays normally (artifacts show at the top 1/8 of the video portion of the screen). Also, when in full screen, the video sometimes plays at a seemingly slower frame rate (maybe 10fps or so, so it's definitely choppy), again while the sound continues normally. Don't know if this has anything to do with the issue, but it's been annoying, to say the least (especially considering the over-$3000 I put into this thing...not that I'm complaining about the price for an MBP, I love it despite these issues...).
Finally, the system has been a bit slower overall. As far as maintenance, I'm pretty anal. I run MacScan and MacKeeper once a day at least. I have onyx and check for file permissions within Onyx and Disk Utility, etc., on occasion, and did so just a few days ago. My hard drive is 500GB with just over 100GB free...
ALSO: I had been having an issue a couple weeks ago where my computer would freeze every 30 seconds or so for about 5 seconds, and then resume again as though nothing was wrong, and then repeat... Restarting didn't help, so I repaired permissions, and things seemed to be fixed (although my MS Office programs wouldn't work...all my programs are legit, by the way...so don't know what was up with that...but a reinstall fixed the issues).
I've had a **** of a couple weeks with this computer, but I'm determined to keep it running (and my pocket full, hopefully). Any chance that someone can help me with what may be going on? I do have AppleCare, but I thought this might be easier than going to the store to have them tell me everything seems fine and they have no clue what's wrong...
I did a copy of the report once the computer started again after the whole overheating thing...if that actually tells anyone anything. Any help is MUCH APPRECIATED! Thanks in advance!

    Tom
Thanks, I switched CuteFtp to binary and that cleared up the problem. You know I was using your post from a previous thread to help me already. I guess I did not read enough.
You are really helping with your posts.
    Very much appreciated,

  • I finished adding my transtions to my timeline.  I was having crashing issues so I shut down everything before I rendered the project and now it tells me that the project is unreadable or the file is too new for this version of final cut. What Happened?

I finished adding my transtions to my timeline.  I was having crashing issues so I shut down everything before I rendered the project and now it tells me that the project is unreadable or the file is too new for this version of final cut. What Happened?

    What Happened?
No way for us to know.  But if your system was crashing, there definitely was a problem.  The FCE error message you got normally indicates the FCE project file has been corrupted.  This probably happened due to whatever caused your system to crash & shutting down the system.
First, make sure your system is running correctly.  Then, use the Finder to navigate to /users/yourusername/Documents/Final Cut Express Documents/Autosave Vault and find the most recent backup copy of your FCE project file.  Copy the file to your Final Cut Express Documents folder (copy the file, don't just move it).  Then double-click the copy to open it in FCE.  It should open ok, but will probably not have your most recent edits (transitions).  You may have to rebuild the transitions, but at least you will be back in action.

  • In case of a DB crash what happens to the status of the Control File

When a DB is crashed will the Control file that exists in the OS also get corrupted, What happens to the Data Files , how to recover the Control files and Data Files , the DB in case there isn't any Backup media or any Dump available on the DB.

The only one way to recover a database is to be in archivelog mode.
And if I said about recover stricto sensu, that's because even in noarchivelog mode we need to use the command recover until cancel before an open with resetlogs option, even if we haven't any redo/archive logs. That fake a recover, this is what we say a mimic recover. Which is not a recover stricto sensu like it can be the case with archivelog mode.

  • Hyper-V host crash and live migration - what happens?

    Hello there,
it would be great if you could help me understand how live migrationworks on a sudden host crash of a cluster node.
I know that the cluster functionality mounts the vhd file on another host and runs the VM.
But what happens to the VM itself? Does it crash too and is simply restarted on another host?
To my knowledge the RAM of the VM is run in the RAM of the host, wo I would assume that is all lost on a host crash?
Thanks for any help understanding this,
    Best regards, Marcus

In a sudden crash, there is no time for the state of any running VMs to move to another system.  Therefore, the VM is restarted on another node of the cluster.  Think of the host crashing as being the same as pulling the power cable on the VM.

Restore iPhone with current iTunes on computer. See if better. If still problem, make Genius reservation or set up Service and take or send to Apple for resolution. Of if easier for you, take receipt and iPhone, box and everything and return to where you bought it.

  • Any idea what happened in this crash and if my MacBook needs work?

A friend of mine suggested that I post the crash report here to see if anyone knows what happened and whether I need to do anything. I would go to a Genius Bar, but the nearest Apple Store to me is 3 hours away
    Here's what happened:
I was working in Firefox when the computer screen suddenly went completely black without warning or any sounds. I tiled the monitor forward slightly and the screen came back up for an instant before a partly opaque gray curtain fell from the top of the screen to the bottom. Then a message showed up on the far left - the box was half off the screen - saying I needed to shut down my computer. I did. I waited a few minutes and powered it on. The screen was gray with tiny gray horizontal pinstripes for a while with the apple logo (also crossed with the pinstripes) while it was booting up. However, it never fully booted up. I had to shut it down again. I booted it as a target drive with another computer to copy over important documents. Then, I ejected it and shut it down. Then I powered it on, and this crash report showed up after it booted up.
And below is the crash report.

  • I am running OSX Lion 10.7.4 and the computer no longer will go into sleep mode when I close the cover What happened with this option?

I am running OSX Lion 10.78.4 and the computer will no longer go into sleep mode when I close the cover. In system preferences I can no longer find the option that allows for this energy saving feature. What happened to this option and why is this no longer happening with the latest version of Lion?

No external monitors or devices attached. When you mention that this function only works when devices are attached that is true when you set up your preferences that way. Up until my upgrade to Lion the computer would always go into sleep mode when I closed the lid. There also used to be an option to check in system preferences that allowed you to choose this option. My question for the discussion is what happened to that option and how do you get the computer to sleep or at least the display to sleep when you close the lid as we have been able to do in the past. Thanks.

Do you have the iCloud set up?  If you don't you need to buy a third party software that will do it for you when you plug your phone into the new computer.  You can google: iPad/iPhone/iPod to Computer Transfer.  You have to pay for the software but it's really a life saver and you get free updates for life.  It'll save you a lot of pain and suffering in the future.  I've used it many times.
