So I think this might be an outputting error with Commotion but I'm getting weird results with my exports. I shot the footage at 29.97. Edited in FCP. Exported these talking head clips as an FCP movie. Imported into Commotion. Rotoscoped the subject to keep her in focus and de-focused the background. Exported as QuickTime and then when imported back into FCP I get these weird lines when the subject moves her heads. Look like an interlacing error? I've done this workflow hundreds of times in the past and never have seen this. Something must be wrong when exporting. Check it out:

Re-shoot is not going to happen. This is a simple field issue I believe. Export setting from FCP were: 720x480, NTSC-DV, Lower (Even), 29.97, DV/DVCPRO NTSC. I've tried several different Commotion export settings. With Field Output (both upper and lower), without Field Output. Both as Animation codec and DV-NTSC. I'm now about to check my Composite Settings in Commotion and see if those have any effect.

IPhone 4 camera issue: check it out!

I'm asking you, iPhone 4 users, if you can make a test of your camera.
I am substantially pleased by the iPhone 4 camera but after some days of use, viewing the images at 100% crop (1:1), I discovered a defect on all the shots.
At the far left side, next to border and top to bottom, the image is blurry, independently of the point of focus of the lens.

I don't see anything, but I might be blind. If there's a bit of blurring on the edge, it's easy to crop.
The reason it might be blurry is because of how the iPhone takes a photo. You might think it's an instant capture of the whole scene, but it actually quickly captures the image from left to right. You might be seeing a small amount of jiggling as the image is captured. A real camera, using a CMOS image detector is much faster. A good digital camera can go up to ISO 6400 with 1/1000 speed (OK, only in very bright light).
This is why mobile phones (whether the iPhone or whatever) are just junk for taking real photos. You're trying to find perfection with a $20 part on the iPhone. If you want perfect photos, you need a $5000 Nikon D5 with $2000 lenses. But of course, a great camera is not the panacea for all photo issues or user incompetence.
I think your photos are nice, considering you're using a very limited iPhone camera. Crop it, and it'll look really good. Otherwise, your expectations are way too high for the iPhone camera.

Issue with filling out form fields in Safari?

Has anyone noticed any issues with filling out form fields (specifically text boxes) in Safari 6.0.2 on Mac OS 10.8.2? When I attempt to test forms I've created, there is a delay when typing values into text boxes. Other types of input controls (check boxes, drop down lists, etc.) appear to work fine. As far as I can tell, this only occurs with Safari 6.0.2 in Mac OS 10.8.2. Prior versions of Safari do not have this issue, nor does Firefox in the same OS environment. When I refresh the form, the delay is not as noticeable. I'm searching the WebKit bug reports as well, but nothing seems to point to this issue. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Plasma Screen OK to test interlacing issues?

Having interlacing issues with my 24P footage and IMac monitor. If I output to my plasma screen, is this the same as any NTSC monitor in regard to checking/monitoring interlace issues?

This is an extract from the "Key Features" of the Panasonic standard definition video camera I'm assuming he's been using based on his profile:

Check in / out in document sets

Hello
I use document sets and want to enable check in/out. Whenever someone opens a file that's inside the set, changes something and saves it again, there's no question asked about the required metadata... There's also no green sign that shows that the document
is checked out, even though it is. When I do this in a normal library, everything works fine. Is this a limitation of document sets, or does anyone know a solution to this?
I'm wondering if a document set is the best way to go anyway. We use SharePoint in an educational environment and use document sets for all course related material. For example we have a course in IT and several modules that reside under this course.I use a
document set for every module and place tests, notes, schema's, lessons, ...
Any help is very much appreciated...

I'll explain myself a little more...
I enabled 'require check out', but the problem occurs when creating a new document or when uploading an existing document to the document set. I made some columns required, so normally when closing Word I get prompted with a question to fill in some stuff
before the document can be saved. Untill the document is checked in, a green dot symbol normally appears in the library next to the items that aren't checked in yet.
In the document library however, there's no question asked about the fields that need to be filled in, it just saves the document without metadata... I also don't see the green dot, eventhough the document is still checked out...
Is this normal for a document set?

Expose userid field in the Check in/out web service

I need to integrate the Check in/out web services into a InfoPath Library Form. I have the webservices added and working properly. My progress thus far:
              -CheckinFile, CheckOutFile, UndoCheckOut data connections are added
              -Necessary rules are built
              -Web services appear to work correctly EXCEPT
1. I receive an error if the form is opened in Browser, but not when opened in InfoPath Filler. This is a problem because most of our users do not have InfoPath installed. So we have a need to open in Browser or dialog.
2. Once the file is checked back in, the field "Checked Out To" defaults to an application ID.
So two issues:
How to open the form in Browser
How to set the Checked Out To field to the current user.
From what I have been told, I need to expose the userid element in InfoPath designer.

DW CS4 Ignoring Check In/Out on 1 Site Suddenly

We're using Dreamweaver's Check in/out functionality in my office and have been for about a month now. No problems.
Suddenly this morning, my coworker's DW is not checking out the files when she opens them. It sometimes throws a prompt that the file is read-only and gives the options to View/Make Writable, and sometimes it asks her to overwrite her local copy (yes), and sometimes it doesn't say anything at all. Regardless, once the local file is opened, it does not show up as checked out, nor does it offer the option (when right-clicked) to check out or check in.
Exactly how it happened:
She arrived this morning, checked out a local file to make changes, checked it back in like normal (which Puts the file to our remote live site), and the changes appeared on the remote site as expected. Needing additional changes, she then Checked Out the file once more and proceeded to make substantial changes. Upon saving the file, the changes were visible on our local site (as expected). But now her Check In option was greyed out, as are the Check Out and "Undo Check Out" options. She also does not see a checkmark beside the file indicating that she has it Checked Out, although I do see a red checkmark in my DW, indicating that the file is Checked Out by her. She can click the actions Get and Put, but they don't do anything. The dialog reads that the file gets Put to remote, but the remote server isn't reflecting the changes. Attempting a Syncronization, there is a prompt that says no sync is necessary. I tried to run a manual sync with this file's action set to Put, and still the changes are not showing up on our remote site.
She hasn't touched any of the settings since yesterday (when it worked fine) and upon inspecting her settings, they all appear to be correct - identical to mine (which still works) and to the other Sites we manage in the same way, which still work for her (we tested them to see). So we're pretty befuddled as to what's going on. Can anyone help? It's rather urgent.
Probably Important:
We just noticed that he site isn't connecting to the remote host. Again, all the settings are the same as mine. The power outlet icon is greyed out on her panel, but mine is working as expected (shows plugged in with a green light). She tried to click it to connect, and it did not respond or appear to make an effort of any kind. Her icon works for the other sites we manage, just not for this one. This happens to be our most active site.
One more thing: I duplicated her site in the Manage Sites dialog and tried the new copy - didn't work. Before you ask: yes, she has restarted DW and rebooted her computer.
She is running CS4 on WinXP and I am running CS4 on Win7.

Dreamweaver has an annoying habit of occasionally forgetting site settings. You may need to redefine the site again or actually create a new site definition in Dreamweaver (don't just duplicate it though) and see if that resolves the issue.

Check In/Out doesn't work on network drive?

My company has used DW's check in/check out functionalities just fine for years, but before now the local copies of a site's files had been stored on each user's Mac's harddrive. I've been working on relocating those local copies to a single network drive that everyone can access so we're all working from the same local copies; most everything's going great except it looks like the check in/out functions are no longer working. It looks like the only indication I can see now in the FTP view is a green check on the remote files pane when something's checked out– the local copies don't show lock or check icons any longer.
Given that the only change has been moving the local files over to the network drive, I have to assume DW's check in/out (or at least however I have settings set now) doesn't play nice when the local files live on a network drive. Has anyone run into this issue, and is there a fix for it?

Yep, a new site definition's been set up and I've double-checked that the "local files" setting is pointing to the shared network server as the new local folder.

At first I didn't think that link had anything that I didn't already know, and then saw these two bullets:
• The local root folder for this defined site must be on the local hard drive of a workstation.
• Your local root folder should not be shared or on a mounted drive.
So in short, I suppose those answer my question, but they don't actually say *why* that is– it's hard to believe that the checking feature is limited to a literal local drive, and not a network drive. Seems odd. I'm going to poke around some more and try and figure out why that is, but I'd be grateful if anyone happens to know why in the meantime...

Double-clicking topic checks it out and does not open

Hi all,
I'm experiencing a strange, vexing problem with both of our source-controlled help projects that no one else on my team is experiencing. This appears to be a problem with my computer/installation of RoboHelp.
Today, I went into our help projects for the first time in a couple of days, and when I double-clicked any topic, it automatically checked it out of VSS but did not open it. It also checked out the CSS file, template (master page) file, and any graphic files associated with the topic.
Normally, when I double-click a topic, the topic opens, and it only checks it out of VSS if I start typing in the topic. It does not check out the CSS, master page file, or graphic files unless I make changes to those files.
Like I said, no one else is experiencing this problem. We all have the same system versions (see below). It appears to be only me, and it's happening with both of our help projects. To my knowledge, I did not do anything to my computer or its application settings to cause this. Has anyone experienced a problem like this? If so, what can I do to fix it? Any other ideas?

That actually makes total logical sense to me. Here's why.
Each PC running the Microsoft Windows operating system has a database we all know as the Registry. Inside that registry are entries that govern the behavior of Windows. Consider the Registry to be similar to DNA. The DNA is different for every human, right? The same really holds true with Windows. Some might argue that this cannot be, because if you had the same setup it would be the same. But each copy of Windows has a different user and more specifically, a different serial number.
Okay, in this registry database is an area known as file associations. So Windows keeps track of which applications should open when files are double-clicked.
RoboHelp has a similar feature that is governed from the dialog you were in. But it also works in concert with Windows. So who really knows why sometimes it does the things it does. I understand that RoboHelp determines the editor by meta tags found in the HTML of the topics.
I do know that as part of any RoboHelp training class I facilitate, I regularly lead folks to this area and configure to the "Use Default" as an early step. I do this because if you import a Word document into the project and you leave Auto-select enabled, Word opens when you attempt to double click topics in the RoboHelp editor.

I resolved the issue.
The problem is indeed a permissions issue with the Adobe Application Support folder.
First, in MAC OS Lion the ~/Library/ folder is hidden by default. You must unhide it in order to proceed. (if it is already visible in your ~/User/ folder, proceed to Step 4.)
Next launch the Terminal application.
At the command line, paste the following command line: chflags nohidden ~/Library/
Go to /Users/youruserid/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Get info on the ~/Adobe folder and reset your permissions to read/write and apply to all enclosed folders

Interlacing Issue - DV PAL to Uncompressed**

Hi there,
Please forgive me if this has been covered previously.
I have read the "Sending back to FCP from Color**" post, but it's a slightly different problem I have.
Original FCP timeline is DV PAL Lower Field. Used the Send To Color command and graded. I render out of Color at 10 Bit Uncompressed.
In FCP I change the (from Color) timeline to 10 Bit Uncompressed (Upper Field therefore). So I have Upper Field 10 Bit clips in and Upper Field 10 Bit timeline; no green, yellow or red bars...
But the footage is all jittery when playing back on the broadcast monitor. And no changing of the field settings seems to fix anything.
The only fix is to apply a "Shift Field" plugin, and then it plays back perfectly... So it's definately an interlace issue.
Is anyone else having the same issues ? What am I doing wrong ?

COLOR 1.0, or as it could be referred to: "Final Touch 2.8", seems to prefer progressive streams. Interlacing has been a headache for a long time. The ColorFX room is especially a chamber of horrors.
FT was designed, from the ground up, to grade sequential dpx/cin files. But consumers demanded a Quicktime HD solution. Does that help explain a few things?
If you're aiming for a 10-bit finish...from 8 bit material-- I know it baffles most engineers how so many people expect to get more colour resolution that way, when it never existed in the first place -- you only get so many rungs on a stepladder no matter how closely you try to space them out-- maybe going into COLOR 10-bit would be a better approach than trying to push it up within the app. The sad stories about trying to leverage the render into another codec are legion.

Hotel check-in/out and Car Rental pick-up/drop-off

When hotel and car rental are assigned to reports, does it automatically set check-in/out and pick-up/drop-off based on trip start and end dates?
If this is so (at it seems to be the case), as soon as the traveler adjusts his start and/or end dates of the trip errors occur in regard to check-out and drop-off being outside the trip.
I bet I have someone call with this issue 3x a day.
A solution could be to automatically adjust these dates based on whatever the traveler does with the trip start and end dates.
The program could do this for the traveler so no adjustments would need to be made; therefore no errors.

Toon Boom Quicktimes in FCP... Interlacing Issues

Hi,
I've been rendering out Quicktimes out of Toon Boom Studio 4.5 and bringing them into Final Cut Pro for editing.
I'm getting really bad interlacing issues when playing back on moving objects, particularly on the 1080i plasma I'm using for monitoring. However when paused the image looks sharp.
The animation is a 1920 x 1080 project in Toon boom, and I'm bringing it into a 1920 x 1080 60i ProRes Sequence. I've tried exporting from Toon Boom to ProRes HQ and Animation quicktimes (both interlaced and progressive), as well as exporting image sequences and bringing them into after effects to export to ProRes. All with the same results.
Interestingly the quicktimes play in a preview-like quality when played in the viewer in FCP. However when I drop them into a ProRes (non-HQ) timeline and render, they look as they should but with bad interlacing issues on moving objects. Dropping the ProRes HQ quicktimes into a ProRes HQ sequence play in a preview-like mode too.
Anyone had any experience working with animation files from Toon Boom? I've had similar issues with QTs from Anime Studio Pro but they weren't really noticeable once rendered in the timeline.

Hi X, sorry for the delay.
If I drop a 30fps ProRes HQ quicktime into a 1030p ProRes HQ sequence, I get the preview-like quality I wrote about earlier.
However if I change the sequence compressor to regular ProRes and render, it displays sharp as it should but still has the bad interlacing. The plasma I'm monitoring with can't display 108030p though so I'm judging this from an apple cinema display.
Exporting from this timeline to 108060i ProRes has the same problem.
Do you think it's possible the characters in the cartoon move too great a distance between frames that it's causing this issue?
