Interlace-like banding in ACR6.1 vs. ACR4.6

I am experiencing interlace-like banding when sharpening images with ACR 6.1. This may be a phenomenon which occurred sometime between ACR 4.6 and ACR 6.1, but I made the jump directly from CS3 to CS5 and so I would not be able to narrow it down any more than that.
Here's what I'm experiencing in a nutshell:
1) If I open up RAW files shot on my Rebel XT, I can sharpen them fine without the banding in ACR 6.1.
2) If I open up .DNG files shot on my 5D Mark II, they sharpen fine in ACR 4.6.
3) If I open up .DNG files shot on my 5D Mark II, they produce banding in ACR 6.1.
4) If I open up RAW files shot on my 5D Mark II, sharpening produces the banding in ACR 6.1.
Here are two examples: (This shot isn't the quintessential example, but it was readily accessible. The phenomenon is most pronouned in the palm trees.)
Example One:
Canon 5D Mark II DNG (Shot in sRAW1 & Zoomed to 100%) with 150 sharpening applied in ACR 4.6
Example Two:
Canon 5D Mark II DNG (Shot in sRAW1 & Zoomed to 100%) with 150 sharpening applied in ACR 6.1
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Since ACR 4.6 cannot open raw files from the 5D Mark II, both of these images were obtained from a DNG conversion of the original RAW file. Sharpening of the RAW file in ACR 6.1 produces identical banding.
Thanks,
Dave

Ok, if I zoom in to 300%+ in FireFox on my 1600x1200 monitor I can see the lines.  This could be a result of the new noise/detail processing in LR2.7/ACR5.7 but without more tests it is not possible to say if this is a result of the camera doing something when creating the sRAW which is just an already demosaiced TIF, or if it is happening with all the images from the camera.   I'd suggest trying a full RAW file and see if the banding is there.  Since LR is not demosaicing an sRAW there is less blame for it than there would be for full RAW.
Pre-ACR 5.7 would be using a much less detailed sharpening and noise-reduction algorithm which could be why you don't see the banding in the ACR 4.6 processing.
I still suggest trying both Process 2003 and Process 2010 to see if it makes a difference, as well as fiddling with the Detail and Contrast and sharpen-masking sliders to see if you can reduce or eliminate the banding.

  • DVCPROHD to SD - Interlace and Banding

I have searched the forums for days regarding this issue and haven't come up with a complete answer.
I am mastering a series of commercials shot on a Panasonic DVCPROHD camera at 720p 59.94. The final output has been on a SD Beta Tape.
I am editing all these spots in a 720p HD 59.94 timeline and use an AJA Kona LHe card for letterbox output to my beta deck with great looking results. However, every fine line in the footage produces horrible looking banding and buzzing when the camera pans or tilts. I have tried all the tricks - flicker filter, adding a second layer with overlay and adding guassian blur... you name it.
I am convinced that the solution is in the settings. Maybe field order? Maybe going from progressive to interlaced yields crappy results all the time. I don't understand how all of these TV shows and spots shot on HD and mastered to SD look OK.
What has everyone here been doing in this situation?

A couple of things might be worth trying. Try dropping your sequence into a SD sequence and render it and see how that outputs. Or export a selfcontained qt with sequence settings and use compressor to downconvert.

  • "Interlaced-like" motion artifacts when exporting

    I am using CS4.
I rendered using the YouTubeWidescreen HD preset.
My original footage is from a FlipHD camera (H.264) and a JVC Piscio GC-FM2.
My intention was just to make some cuts to the in and out points, but otherwise not alter the orginal footage.
    Two questions:
    1. I have the right sequence settings (Sony XDCAM-X 720p), so that the FlipHD Camera footage comes into the timeline with any redline (or yellow line.) So, Premiere doesn't have to re-render the foogage to display it. But when I export the footage, it seems to (slowly) re-render everything. Back in the days of DV SD, I could (quickly) export DV footage without Premiere re-rendering it at all. Is there any way to do this with HD footage?
    2. I am getting some sort of motion artifacts with the exported file. Looks a lot like interlacing to me. But the cameras shoot in progressive mode as far as I know.
The first photo is a screenshot of the original footage.
The second photo is a screenshot of the export video file.
The person on the left is spinning around.
In the original footage, each frame is without any motion artifact even though the person is moving quickly.
    How do I fix this?

It turns out the JVC camera is at 59.94fps, not at 30fps that I had my sequence set to.
So, when I changed the sequence settings and export settings to match that, it fixed it!
Also, turning off frame blending also fixed it.
Is there any way to get Premiere to just export the original video without re-rendering/re-compressing?
This is way the way it worked with SD DV. If you didn't add any titles or any other effects, it would just export the original file (fast).
It seems I am losing some quality no matter how I export it.

  • Adobe Media Encoder de-interlace question

My video in the preview displays horribly interlaced, this is odd because the footage in the timeline displays correctly and clearly as well as my original footage. What seems to be the problem, I've tried rendering with de-interlace as well, it still shows fairly bad after being rendered.
All my original footage is 1280x720, 25fps.
    My settings:
    Format: H.264
    Range: Entire Sequence
    NTSC, 1280x720, 25[fps], Progressive
AAC, 160 [kbps], 48 kHz, Stereo
VBR, 2 Pass, Target 8.00, Max 8.00 [Mbps]
    Video Codec: MainConcept H.264 Video
    TV Standard: NTSC
    Width: 1280 px
    Height: 720 px
    FPS: 25Field Order: None(progressive)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Widescreen 16:9
    Profile: Main
    Level: 4
    Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 2 Pass
    Target/Maximum Bitrate: 8
Attached Files to show ya what I mean.
Rendering an uncompressed video yeilds the same results as Media Encoder.

On further inspection, Even still renders are interlaced like mad...
    What's wrong?!
    EDIT:
I fixed it!!! Apparently when speeding up or slowing down clips, it merges the frames together giving off that horrible look! So I turned off "frame blend" And it looks super awesome.

  • Best practice for computer video - de-interlace or not

I know that there is a lot of discussion on this forum pertaining to interlacing, but after a search I was unable to answer my question(shocking, I know).
I produce distance education classes for a small university. The bulk of our footage is shot on DVCAM or digitized from S-VHS or even 3/4" U-Matic! All of it is captured in NTSC-DV. We output in two formats enhanced DVD (ala e-DVD) and .flv (through Cleaner). My question is this: the majority of our students are going to be viewing these videos on their computers. Is there anything special that we should be doing with the footage in terms of de-interlacing? And if we should de-interlace what settings should we use? And will de-interlacing adversly effect our few students that watch the DVD videos on a set top player?
Thanks in advance for your help and please accept my apologies if I have missed a previous post addressing this question.
BTW, we are using FCS with all softare up to date.
    2 - PowerMac G5 2.0Ghz DP   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   1- Mac Mini

The answer, I would say, is "it depends". Simple de-interlace throws away half the vertical resolution and doubles up each scanline. Smart de-interlace - like Nattress film effects (60i->30p) - blends the "comb" effect that can happen when viewing interlace material in a progressive (computer monitor) display to leave it looking like motion blur.
You need to look at the material and see if it is problematic when viewed on a progressive display/computer monitor. This would likely be high contrast movement (a bright object moving against a dark background). If the material doesn't look bad, there's no need to go thru the extra processing required to de-interlace. Watching material with smart de-interlacing on an interlace display shouldn't be too bad...

  • Best Practices to do software Patching and Software Deployment for bigger environment like 300 K computers

    Hi Friends,
i am looking for low level suggestions and a ppt/document etc too  , The client base is 300 k users and spread globally ( major in three different regions), the requirement is
    1) methodology to do software patching, can we patch all in one go or do we have to divide as per region etc
    2) How many clients can be targeted for software patching in one go ( ex : can we target 20K clients in one go ?), i know there are other factors too will play key role here like band width etc , but i am looking answers out of real time experience
    3) What Methodology to follow when it comes to critical/emergency updates ?
    Regards
    Tanoj
    OSLM ENGINEER - SCCM 2007 & 2012

There is no single best practice to patching, if there were then SCCM would ship preconfigured :).  As an example, Microsoft internally patches 300,000 workstations with 98% success in about a week according to their own podcast:
    Microsoft Podcast
That said, I do follow a few rules when building a patching plan for a client.  Maybe you'll find it helpful:
Always use a "soak tier".  I forget where I first heard the term, but the idea is to have a good cross section of users get patches one or more weeks before your general deployment.  This will help identify potential issues with a patch
before it hits general release.  Make sure said group is NOT just the IT department ... we make the worst guinea pigs (we aren't known for closing out end of the month billing or posting legal documents).
When it comes to workstations, avoid needlessly phased deployment.  99% of the time, using local time zones is enough of a phased deployment.  Unlike servers with very particular boot and patching orders, workstations can simply be patched.  You
have enough collections in your environment ... so any new collection for patching should be justified.
Keep your ADR count down.  It's tempting to build a new ADR for everything (workstations, general servers, exchange servers, etc.).  Problem is that best practice also has you building a new SUG every time each ADR runs ... so you end up getting
flooded with update groups and that much more maintenance.  When possible simply use maintenance windows to break up patching schedules instead of using mostly duplicate ADRs that simply have separate start dates.
Use Orchastrator.  To me Orchastrator is to Software Updates what MDT is to Operating System Deployments:  effectively mandatory.  Even if you don't have complicated cluster updates you need to automate with SCO integrated to SCCM (there
are great examples on the web if you do), you can at the very least create run-books to manage that monthly maintenance you otherwise have to handle manually in SCCM (which is a lot IMO).  I have monthly run-books that delete expired updates from SUGs,
consoldate SUGs older than 6 months unto a single annual group, and even create new update packages (and update all ADRs to use them) every 6 months to keep a single repository from getting too large.
I'm sure others out there can give you more advice ... but that's my two cents.

  • Photo interlacing issue

Hello, I recently got my wife a iphone 5c. Seems fine in every respect except when you take photos. They end up with an odd interlacing like a bad scan or something. I tried searching for a similar issue but seems everything I saw was about an interlacing problem was with the entire screen. This happens only with the camera app... the screen is fine otherwise. Oddly enough it does not do it with video and also when HDR is on, the 'normal exposure' that it saves looks good but the HDR has the horrible interlacing. If HDR is off the interlacing is there though. Is there a way to fix this so that we just get nice clear photos?

I would recommend restoring the iOS and setting it up as new, at least to test. Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
If that doesn't fix it, get it serviced. https://www.apple.com/support/iphone/repair/

  • Is it possible to drag and drop an arrangement from another software program such as band-In -Box to garage band

is it possible to drag and drop an arrangement from another music program like Band-ina-box into garage band

GarageBand for iPad is a pretty closed system.
    The Song File
You can only open GarageBand for iPad Song Files with the extension .band. Please note that those files look the same as the ones form GarageBand 11. However, they are only upwards compatible but not downward compatible. GarageBand iOS -> GarageBand OSX -> Logic.
    Audio Files
You can import a wide variety of Audio Files into GarageBand (via iTunes File Sharing) to use in your Song. But any material from another app has to be mixed down first. Either as a single stereo mix or you mix each track separately and then import those separate files ("stems") into GarageBand. This is a typical procedure to move material to a different app,for example for mixing.
    Hope that helps

  • Interlacing vs pulldown???

I listed a problem in AE's forum, but I was told to come to premiere to get the answer.
I have a project in Premiere CS5 and I created a title.  I sent this title to AE to add some effects, but as soon as I added it, the title became interlaced and looked really bad.
In premiere, my settings are Standard 720X480 24fps Progressive DV/NTSC 0.9091.
Also, the item that I said has interlacing (or interlacing-like symptoms) is a title created in Premiere Pro CS5. No footage, no camera, just a title. Settings 24fps and progressive. I imported it into AE CS5 to add flares etc... AE settings are the same as Premiere. 24fps, 720X480 non interlaced (at least, in AE I cannot find an option on adjusting interlacing). As soon as it makes it to AE, it shows horrible interlacing.
I also thought, "maybe that's just how it looks in the editing programs. I'll export them and see how it looks." I exported both with the same export settings and Premiere export came out clean and AE's export (or pre-render) came out looking horribly interlaced.
In the AE forum, I was told that this was an issue due to "PULLDOWN".  Being unfamiliar with pulldown, I looked it up.  It seems that it has to do with transalting between 24fps and 29.97fps.  But in my case, both the sequence settings in premiere as well as the comp settings in AE are set to 24fps.  Can anyone tell me if this is indeed an issue with pulldown?  If so, how do I remove it?  How do I avoid it?  How do I know when it will be an issue in the future?  Even though this instance was with a title, I do a lot of filming with a sony DV cam.  How does this affect me?
    Terrified in Texas

DV can't record in true 24p.  It'll always want to add pulldown.  So be sure not to use any DV codecs for preview or export files.

  • Interpret interlaced video with 2:2 telecine pulldown as true progressive?

Hope my title makes sense. Not sure how well I will be able to explain.
We have interlaced video files from film telecine. The telecine transfer were made at 25fps as the machines are PAL and this allows us to capture each descrete film frame within the 2 interlaced video fields. I believe this is called 2:2 pulldown. 2 fields for every film frame. The film is captured to V210 10-bit uncompressed blackmagic .avi files. We have films intended to be played back at anything from 12fps to 25fps. Everything is captured at 25fps as the only other available speed is 16 2/3rds fps which creates duplicated fields (3:2) and only works for 16fps content.
So, even though the video file is interlaced (top field first) by combining the fields you get a progressive film frame. Is there anyway to tell Premiere to interpet this footage as progressive without dumping half the fields? As far as I am aware if I work with a progressive sequence or interpret the footage as progressive Premiere will retain the dominant fields and interpolate the rest. I understand this for interlaced content where each field is from a different temporall moment but we actually have the ptrogressive frames just stored as 2 fields.
    Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks

Premiere Pro will automatically interpret footage that is shot as progressive-as-interlaced, like 25p or 30p, but that (to my knowledge) only works correctly with footage that is from a camcorder. That's because the file is flagged in such a manner that Premiere Pro knows to put the interlaced fields in the correct order for progressive display. I work with 480/30p and 1080/30p footage (which are both interlaced as shot) frequently, and Premiere Pro does things correctly there.
However, I think it will be a different matter in your case, unless the captures are being flagged as they are created. What does Premiere Pro say that the clips' field order (or lack thereof) is when imported? As you've surmised, if this isn't the case, telling Premiere Pro to interpret the footage as progressive is likely going to result in some unwanted artifacts. You could probably test this by importing two instances of your clip, interpreting one as progressive, and then placing them in a progressive sequence (one on top of the other) and toggling visibility between the tracks. You should quickly see if it's having the desired effect or... something else. Instinct tells me that Premiere Pro won't handle this correctly, however.
This might be a job for After Effects, which is a certain degree smarter and more capable of interpreting such things. I'm not exactly sure how to handle it there, but the After Effects forum might be the best place to ask.

  • How can I check my z3 dual using which LTE bands

    Hi
Most of OEM phones(Samsung and LGE) provide following service mode which include GSM/3G/LTE information as below.
I would like to know currently my phone which lte bands using. (like Band 3 / Band 7...) which above samsung hidden menu.
Already reviewed "*#*#SERVICE#*##" and "*#*#INFO#*#*" hidden menu, won't found any lte band information.

    Thank you for your info.
Tried to search like "LTE band" but won't found any LTE band relate app on Play store.
"LTE discovery" app show many LTE information, I'm currently located on South korea for business trip.
But this app lte band show function only support on US major carrier.
"Identifies bands for Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile"
I confirmed that this app won't display lte band on my phone.

  • Sequence Settings - Video Processing question!? AVCHD

I'm using the panasonic HMC40, very similar to the HMC150.
    So i'm shooting in AVCHD.
My Sequence Settings are as follow...
    1280x720 - HDTV 720p (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio - Square
Quicktime Video Settings Compressor: Apple ProRes422 - quality 100%
('Interlace' and 'Enable 4:4:4 chroma filtering' are NOT selected)
    Video Processing
    Render in 8-bit YUV
    Process Maximum White as: White
    Motion Filtering Quality: Normal
now while i'm editing the footage looks good, but when i go to export my video (export - quicktime movie - current settings - recompress all frames NOT selected) i get some weird lines from lights and color changes. almost like the colors aren't blending right.
does this have to do with the Video Processing settings?
what is the best way for setting this up for AVCHD footage to make it as close as possible to the real footage?

The weird lines from lines sounds like a function of cheap camera lenses. All consumer cameras show streaks off bright lights. Not sure what you mean by the colors not blending right, though it sounds like banding, which you often see in low light situations with small chips and heavily compressed formats like AVCHD. A screen shot of what you're talking about would be helpful.

  • Adobe Media Encoder Question

Hey everyone! So I just switched from using AE CS5.5 to AE CC, which now has me use the Media Encoder to render all my files, which frankly is AWESOME. However, I sometimes like to render out a piece of a long video I'm editing so I can get a glimpse at how it is looking so far without having to wait for it to completely finish. With CS5.5 I was able to just *stop* rendering, and the video would publish to my desktop and end wherever I had stopped it. With Media Encoder when I hit stop, the file is nowhere to be found as if the program just throws it away after canceling. Is there a way to make it still render what it already got through so I at least have a partial file to view??

On further inspection, Even still renders are interlaced like mad...
    What's wrong?!
    EDIT:
I fixed it!!! Apparently when speeding up or slowing down clips, it merges the frames together giving off that horrible look! So I turned off "frame blend" And it looks super awesome.

    Hi Christoph and WarriorAnt,
Thank you both for the replies.
I don't know anything about GarageBand because I've never used it. I've never used any music software before, (other than iTunes, Ha!)
I don't have GarageBand on my Mac because it wasn't stock on the old Powerbook G4, so I would have to buy it. I'm happy to do that if I can figure out that it does what I want ... but I'm overwhelmed by the info at Apple's site. Too much for a beginner like me. Even the wikipedia.com entry for GB uses too many terms I don't know, so I'm easily lost.
I just want to be able to set up drum loops and play along with them. The main thing is that I'm able to use third party loops. There are so many really amazing loop products out there ... jungle drums, acoustic jazz drums, lounge, etc. I don't want to get caught up in anything proprietary (like Band-In-A-Box) because the selection is limited. I'm sure GarageBands loops are great, but I want access to all these other third party loops as well ... loops that were not specifically made for GarageBand.
Will GarageBand let me drop in any and all drum loops from these other companies?
And does GarageBand work like a basic sequencer, where I can program up an intro, X number of measures of a loop, then a turnaround, then a variation loop, then an ending, etc?
I know the high-end stuff like Native Instruments Kontakt does this, but unfortunately it also does a kazillion other professional-level things I will never need and don't want to pay for (and which make the software more complex and daunting).
Thank you again, both of you, for responding and helping me with this project.
Just a little more advice on those two questions would really go a long way.

  • Updated Iphone 4 and Itunes 11.. cannot update checked music and apps

    Computer uses Windows 7.
Iphone is a version 4 with IOS 6.0.1 loaded.
Itunes is the latest version of 11.
I noticed my new Ipad mini has no issue with connecting to Itunes and it does read what apps I want removed and added.
The Iphone 4 however is having issues.  I notice that Itunes locks up a lot which could possibly be an issue with the computer but unclear.
I have certain songs checked..when going into the music section prior to connecting the phone.
When the phone is connected I can see the settings for the phone and in the general part I have tried different configurations.. I tried sync checked audio and video only...I have redone it with checking manually control of music/video.
I noticed based on which of those two are checked it will either check or uncheck the actual sync box in the music tab for the phone.  If in the music tab of the phone that is checked....it gives me different things to click like "Band" or "Album" and still disregards any selection I make there and will not change the present music in the phone.
My issue is overall it completely disregarding the audio selections and keeping whatever audio is on the phone where its at.  It will not add the new CDs I purchased to the phone even though they are checked in Itunes.  The apps are not updating either...In the phones app tab it says it will remove apps but does not and will not add other either.
Version 10.7 seemed to be glitchy for me as well...it seemed I had to do 2 syncs to get it to accept my choices but would accept them.
    Am I missing a setting?

After upgrading i06 on iphone 4 and Itunes 11 on pc
Does anyone know how to solve why the apps sync starts installing apps on the IPhone, blue bar gets to mid point for each app (even 1 app) then hangs i.e. fully clears the blue bar as if it hasn't started. Occurs on cable connection and Wifi sync.
This then stops you from installing any apps as the hung app shows installing but not doing anything.
Installing new apps is fine however.
    cheers
