Interlacing for Stills/Animation?

hello guys, hows it going, just a quick question.
So basically i've made a 2D animation in FCE HD consisting entirely on stills/jpegs (1920x1850).
Now, i burned a dvd using toast just to check how it looked (exported as quicktime) and there seems to be a slight jittery-ness/flicker to the video pretty much through out the whole thing when played on a TV. on some of the frames it's slightly worse but only in certain areas of the image.
So searching through the forums i found a bunch of stuff about interlacing and i just wanted to know if you guys could confirm if this may be the issue?
I.e. Should i be be applying the de-interlace filter to the whole animation? if so do you know which of the De-interlace settings would be best?
thanks alot for your help.

Hello, so yeah i just looked through the forum a bit more and found a similar thread where you say that the VGA Display Adapter will only mirror the desktop, so i guess i'm stuck a little.
just to make it a little quicker for could you tell me what the difference is on the flicker filter settings? i really have no idea how that filter works.
for example, if i have a long hold on one jpeg/image where nothing moves (i.e. 10 secs) is there a flicker filter setting that would particularly suit?
similary if i have a bit of fast movement made up of say 20 jpegs at 00.02 seconds each, i.e. say a person walking across the screen, then should those jpegs be applied with a different flicker setting?
thanks for all the help.

  • What is the future of Flash CC and SWF format for 2D animation?

My work heavily relies on Flash for 2D animation then import SWF's into AE for comping. Since I do frame by frame animation and very little tweening, SWF saved my life numerous times because of it's file size, continous rasterisation and ease of use. Although being buggy in places and Fash not seeing any of that recent AE love, it's still a key tool for me.
So are there any plans to clean that bad boy up?

If you are having a problem it is not clear what it is from what you have said.  If you have sugestions for improving some shortcomings you see in Flash CC then you should submit them to:

  • Ilustrator sizing for Whiteboard Animation

I have a problem and after days of searching the Net, I can't seem to find the answer. I'm hoping someone here can help.
I'm using illustrator cs6. Actually we just got it at work so I'm rather new at using it.
One of the things we use illustrator for is to help us manipulate images for whiteboard animation. There is a technique that requires you to first prepare the images in illustrator but there is a sizing issue I can't figure out.
I don't want to bore you with all the whiteboard  stuff but let me give you enough info hoping it will help solve the illustrator problem
It is important to know that we use THE SAME image several times for the effect. The image will be a raster image.
    FIRST INSTANCE
    1. We import (place) the FIRST INSTANCE OF THE SAME IMAGE into illustrator.
    2. Using the pencil tool (we can not use any other tool) we stroke certain areas of the IMAGE to be drawn in the whiteboard and DO NOT stroke the areas we don't want to be drawn.
    3. When done stroking, the IMAGE is saved as a SVG.
    SECOND INSTANCE
    1. We open a new document and place the same raster image we used in the FIRST INSTANCE into illustrator.
    2. Using the pencil tool, we stroke different areas of the image to be drawn in the whiteboard
    3. When done stroking we save the image as a SVG.
So in the above example we used the same RASTER image but each image was stroked in different areas using the pencil tool. We saved the images as SVG. Lets say we named the images  1.svg and 2.svg. Remember they are the same image, the only difference is they were stroked differently with the pencil tool.
First I import 1.svg into the whiteboard and next I import 2.svg exactly on top of 1.svg.  When the whiteboard draws the images it will first draw the strokes of 1.svg and than it will draw the strokes of 2.svg.
    HERE IS THE PROBLEM.
When creating the FIRST INSTANCE ABOVE and adding strokes, some of the strokes go outside of the border of the image. Hence when I save it, the image size may be larger than the original image because of the strokes going outside of the image border. The same thing may happen when I stroke the SECOND INSTANCE of the image.
I need to find a way in illustrator CS6 to remove all strokes outside of the image border so when I save the images they are the same size. If they are not the same size, when I import them into the whiteboard software, the drawing effect shifts while it should look like one image being drawn. The two SVG images have to be the same size for the drawing effect to work.
WOW!!!!!!!!!! I didn't know it would take all that to explain my problem and I'm still not sure if I explained it well. I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone can decipher the above enough to help me out. It's appreciated.
    Thanks

    city,
You may, after making the strokes on top of the image, the Layers palette with the expanded layer being your friend, you can select objects covered by other objects there, as in 2):
    1) Select the image, then Ctrl/Cmd+C+F+X+F (hold Ctrl/Cmd and press the other keys in succession), to bring a copy of the image to the very top, then Colors>Adjust Colors, and change to black (depending on your version you may find it in the Filter or the Effect dropdown);
    2) Lock the original image;
    3) Select the copy image and the strokes and in the Transparency palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask with Clip and Invert Mask ticked, this will hide any part of the strokes outside the image boundaries and let the original image be visible underneath;
    4) Unlock the original image.
This should (visually) cut the outlying parts of the strokes and ensure that the SVGs have the same size.

  • Best setting for gif animations

what is the optimal setting for animated gifs

Depends on your style and your training as an animator, and
what your project goals are: straight animation? interactivity?
e-cards? Traditional animators used to drawing frame-by-frame with
exposure sheets will feel more comfortable with Toon Boom Studio
(www.toonboom.com). It has far superior drawing tools and color
pallette management and timeline management than Flash. But if
you're used to Illustrator, that may make no difference to you. It
appears that the upcoming Flash CS4 will narrow the gap, as the
interface appears to include enhancements that will be more
familiar to traditional animators, not to mention IK, which Toon
Boom Studio doesn't have (the highly expensive Toon Boom Solo does
    have it).
That said, I think Flash is a great program for creating
cartoon animation. You may not think you're interested in
ActionScript programming at this point. I use Flash mainly for
cartoon animation and I resisted ActionScript for a few years. But
once you get used to Flash as an animation tool, and then decide to
dip your little toe into ActionScript, you'll find out what an
astounding tool it is, even for traditional animation, enabling you
to do things impossible in more traditional-oriented programs. Plus
now Flash and Illustrator are fairly well integrated, so you'll be
able to import and export between the two.
On balance, I'd go for Flash.

all pretty identical tho I would go with cs, just because I
    like the GUI much
    more than other versions...

  • How to generate an XML file for an animation of IK armature

Can someone please tell me how to generate an XML file for an animation of IK armature.
I have a 5 keyframe/16 frame animation of a human character made up of a series of moveiclip symbols that is animated with an IK armature.  I need the XML information from the animation.
When I go to Commands > Export Motion XML I get the error message "There is more than one object on frame 1" and then nothing happens.
    Thank you,
    c

I hope that's not the case.  I want to write to adobe about it.  I think it's a great feature and it functions really well even though it is not a very developed IK tool.  My biggest issue with it is ouput options and integration with motion tweens.
I have seen a lot of examples of animators using it online, just no one talked about output.  I just feel it hasn't been developed.  It can generate a sprite sheet but only for a single pose frame of the animation, and not all the key frames or pose tweens.  I find that functionality quite odd, as if adobe just forgot about IK when added in sprite sheets, etc. and the reason it half works is just an accident.

  • Best Codec for exporting animations with alpha channel from FCP timeline

Whats the best codec for exporting animations (hopefully using loseless compression) that will retain alpha channel, and use the current sequence settings for fps and size?
Currently Im exporting image sequences, but I'd prefer a wrapper.. I don't know much about the 'Animation' export codec.. I did notice that set to current size had some funky value of 753x450 or something.. instead of my current project size of 1920x1080...
Anyhow.. Just seeing what others are doing..
basically Im reading out some titles that I'll end up dropping over video later.. but since they render out so slowly (**** lower 3rds is slow) Im trying to get a jump on the process..
    Tx..

PNG should do it. I think PNG is lossless (that's what they say, anyway). But realistically, if you use PNG, Animation, or JPG2000 set on highest quality, I'd dare you to tell a difference.
I use PNG because it's supposedly lossless, renders twice as fast as Animation in a FCP timeline, and is usually about half the size.
If you use "Export Using Quicktime Conversion", you will need to check all of the settings manually to make sure they match your sequence settings. This is always true, no matter what codec you use.
If that sounds risky, your other option is to go into your sequence settings and change the codec to the one you want to render to (this will probably turn your whole timeline red), and then choose Export -> Quicktime movie.

  • Which is best for 3d Animation??

Which is better for 3d Animation and graphic design? Mac or PC...and for whichever is better which laptop would be a good affordable choice? Please help! I know very little of computers.

Ok, time for a little bit of an explaination. Sorry, please sit back, grab some coffee and a snack, this is going to take a moment.
    *ahem*
The argument as to which is better between PC and Mac has been raging for years. On one hand, most graphic designers that are small and starting up are convinced that Macintosh Apple is the top dog on this department. Larger graphic firms tend to switch to PC, keep mac, or use something proprietory.
Is Mac better? The general consensus is yes - straight out of the box, it tends to work better. There is no doubt, however, that you can get the exact same results cheaper if you go with a PC, but with a PC, you'll have to configure your system.
So, where does that leave you? It leaves you with program and compatibility. You need to ask yourself, 'what 3d Modeling programs have I been using? What specifications do they require? Do they have a PC and Mac version? If so, which do people tend to say works better with it?'
    and..
What is everyone I'm working with going to be using? PC, or Mac? There might be issues converting things and transporting things (or at least extra steps) if I go say, PC and everyone is using Mac.
Answer those questions and you'll have your answer.

  • Beswt choice for a desktop computer for 3D animation

So I'm looking for a computer capable of running Maya 2011 and zbrush 4, as well as various Adobe programs and other Autodesk programs.  Right now, I'm looking at three computers on the Best Buy site here, but if none of them can get the job done, then I'll look elsewhere.  I just want some feedback and maybe some links about what I should be looking at.
I'm just going to say right now I'm not looking at Macs.  Anyway, these are the ones I'm looking at from best buy:
Gateway SX2801 : I'm seeing a lot of bad reviews, but none of them are really mentioning what I want to know in particular.
    Asus Essentio CM1630-05
    Asus Essentio CM1630-06
So does anyone have any suggestions/think any of these could be right for me?

The Gateway will not meet your needs - weak CPU and worse, integrated graphics.
The 1630-05 appears to have a very weak discrete graphics chipset, bordering on integrated graphics in capability.  (I'm not as familiar with Radeon product positioning as NVidia GeForce product lines)
Actually the listing of up to "1024 MB Shared" for both of the CM1630s screams "integrated graphics".
For 3D animation of the type you are doing, you need a good discrete graphics card.  At the very least, gaming-grade with dedicated memory on the order of a 1GB NVidia GTS450 or above.  However you may need in this specific case the additional features provided by workstation class video chipsets such as NVidia's Quadro line and ATI/AMD's FireGL line.

  • What is theoptimal file size for stills, and dpi?

what is theoptimal file size for stills, and dpi?

In video dpi is not relevent. What counts in video is pixels. In FCP most recommendations I have seen is to size your stills so they have no more than 3 times the pixels in your project aspect ratio. For example if your project is 1280x720 then stills should be no more than 3 times the 1280x720. This allows you to crop the stills and still have good resolution. If no cropping is anticipated then they could be the same size as your project.

  • Best practice for optimising animation / stage bitmaps

Hi everyone and a happy new year.
I am currently working on a prototype app for the iPad which involves some well known (UK) characters from childrens TV.
My usual job is to build interactive online magazines which are essentially very simple Flash games, and I mean really simple. The artwork is provided to me as hi res jpeg images and I then convert them to 72dpi and add them to the stage as per the design given to me.There is generally between 3-10 user interactions that trigger an animation. I use Tweener for the animations and they are either a popup that slides on and or off the stage.or a character is animated around the stage a bit.
This obviously works fine in a browser but on the iPad it really struggles with the animation, the framerate drops by around 75% and sometimes freezes for several seconds. I knew not to expect high performance animation sequences and high end game play using the packager for iPhone, but I did expect simple animations not to be a problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions on optimisation? Is it perhaps the use of Tweener that is the problem? I am really hoping to get some good results here.
    Thanks for any help.

The secret to success when using stream audio to sync timeline animation is to have the items load ahead of when they are needed. For example, if several new items are to appear at frame 100, and then immediately animate in some way, the audio will cause the frames where they animate to be skipped, because it takes so long for the items to load and get onto the GPU.
So, have those items appear on the stage at perhaps frame 80, and concealed in some way so that you don't notice them. They have to overlap the stage by at least a pixel, otherwise they won't really load onto the GPU. Then at frame 100 move them into their correct positions, and the animation should go as intended.
When doing this, make sure the items are remaining in the same layer, have the same instance name, and there are no gaps in the timeline.

  • How to create pages of text between video clips and as captions for stills

Can either of these things be done in an Imovie?
    Thank you.

Pages of text? No, iMovie 6 cannot do that, and you would probably find that a page of text would be largely unreadable.
What I tend to do when wanting to introduce a paragraph or two of explanatory text or introduction to a movie, is to use rolling credits. The software to that with is, remarkably enough, called Rolling Credits, and is available from:
    http://www.rqs.ca/
Captions for stills? Depends on exactly what you want to achieve. If you want to produce a still with a text box underneath it, you will have to use something like Photoshop or InDesign from Adobe, both of which cost an arm and half a leg.
What I prefer to do (sorry!) is to use an application called Photo to Movie, in which (among many other things) you can overlap text on a slide/still of any size, or even have a text box below it. Photo to Movie then converts that sequence to a DV file which can be imported into iMovie without any quality loss. It is also the best way to produce high quality slide shows. You can get it here:

  • Replay Button for SWF animation

Situation: Imported animated SWF file into slide. Using
Captivate Back and Next buttons to control navigation. I want to
add a "Replay Demo" button for the animation SWF file.
Is this possible through Captivate (or Flash)? I don't want
the continuous loop animation but do I want the option for a user
to review animation again if desired.

I hate it when I post something on a forum and then I
discover the answer 10 minutes later. Ny your answer I'm guessing
the Captivate add button fweature with a Jump to slide 1 setting"
    is the answer, right?
That DID fix the replay issue. Now on to second issue. The
animation blanks out once it finishes playing. While looking for
the replay answer yesterday, I noticed a post that said something
about creating a screen capture of the last slide and insert it on
the timeline or something... back to searching. Thanks for the
    quick reply.
