Intermitent slowness

Java 6 update 5 (both)
Jboss 4.2.3GA (Server 1) and Jboss 4.2.2GA (Server 2)
Oracle 10.1.0.2 (Server 1) and 10.1.0.5 (Server 2)
I have avery strange issue that I have no idea how to resolve. I don't even know what causes it. Basically, some queries that are run through jdbc from the web application (a war file running on JBoss 4.2.3GA (same thing happens whe we run it on 4.2.2GA)) take forever to run.. Sometimes! Other times they are fast. When the same query is run through just a regular SQL query tool like oracle Sql Developer, always run fast. What has been happening is this:
The users are using the application, everything runs fast. Then it suddenly shows down to a crawl. The same functions are being used, same queries executed when it's running fast and when it's running slow. I log into the server and am monitoring the Processes in Task Manager. When the application runs fast the oracle process, the one for database itself, is taking up anywhere from 00 to 14 at the highest percent of the CPU usage. When the app slows down, oracle process cpu usage jumps up to 25 - 37%. The amount of people logged into the app have no visible impact on the speed. You can have one or 25 people logged in and it's just as slow. You can have the same 25 people logged in and it's fast.
For the first month of using the program there wasn't a problem. Then for a few weeks we didn't use it and when we started using it again the problem manifested. I checked w/ the guys responsible for the servers they say no maintanance has been done on the hardware or software of the servers.
How we tried to fix the problem:
re-install Oracle (didn't work)
Put system.out.printlns all over the code. In one case where I had the S.o.p before and after the line that queries the database, the before part was printed out, but not the after. It's like the thread never came back. Now it's comming back, just taking a really really long time.
Another thing we did is try to upgrade the oracle driver that the server uses. I'm not sure which one was on there in the first place since both are named ojdbc14.jar, but the old one had the last modification date of 1/27/2005 and the one we downloaded for our version of oracle.. well I don't know it just fives the date and time of when I downloaded it. But here's the strange part: replacing the driver seems to have fixe the problem for a few days. Everything started running fast again... Then after a few days it all slowed down to a crawl. Just restarting jboss and clearing the temp and work folders didn't work. So what we did, is replaced the new driver with the old one again, just to see what happens.... The app started running fast again. This again lasted for a couple of days then it slowd down. Then we replaced the driver w/ the new one again and it started running normally again and so on. Finally replacing the driver back it forward stopped working (what surprises me is that it worked in the first place). Another thing that seemed to fix the slowness for about 20 minutes or so is restarting the server itself.
sounds like a memory leak, maybe but the memory usage is low and doesn't go up when the slowness happens. Restarting jboss and clearing temp and work and data folders doesn't do anything either.
The difference in speed between when the app works as it's supposed to and when it's slow is drastic. When it's fast it takes about a second to three seconds to get from one screen to the next. When it's slow it can take from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Same queries are being run.
We tried it on 2 different servers. Same problem on both. One of them is a dedicated server for the app. It also houses the database. And no other program is connected to the database except this one.
Sorry for the long post. I'm not sure whether the problem is Oracle, JDBC driver, our program or something else.
If anyone has any idea as to what might be causing this and how to fix it, please let me know.
Thanks.

Since your queries are running for quite a while you might be able to use the V$SQL_PLAN view to spot a difference in the execution plan when this happens.
You need to identify the session in V$SESSION that is currently executing the query and then use the SQL_ID and SQL_CHILD_NUMBER column to identify the SQL being executed.
You can then run a query on V$SQL_PLAN using the obtained SQL_ID and SQL_CHILD_NUMBER (it's called CHILD_NUMBER in V$SQL_PLAN) to capture the execution of the "bad" behaving execution. You can also use the DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY_CURSOR('<SQL_ID>', <CHILD_NUMBER>) function to get a nicely formatted output of the execution plan if that function is already available in 10.1 (it is in 10.2).
If you're using Oracle Enterprise Manager you can achieve the same using the available GUI.
Try to compare the captured execution plan to a fast or normal execution in order to find out if there are any significant differences.
One possible explanation could be the usage of bind variables and the effects of bind variable peeking. If your SQL ages out of the shared pool and gets eventually hard parsed again you might be unlucky and perform a hard parse with an unusual bind variable value that leads to an suboptimal execution plan for most of the bind variable values used.

  • Intermitantly slow Azure websites

Were having some strange performance issues with Azure websites. I am aware of the the thread pool recycling issue and have set all of our websites to 'Always on' in the portal.
We have a large instance and P1 DB in the same data centre. Our websites are MVC .Net 4.5 using EF6.
The problem is that a page(problem happens on all pages not any one specifically) can usually take 3 seconds to load but sometimes it can take 9 seconds to load. To investigate this I added the hdinsights nuget package and script in to our project and here
is an example of the randomness we see.

All these pages are essentially the same with different data being served. I'm hoping to collect more data to measure how often it occurs.
Has anyone experienced this before? - it does look like the thread recycling issue but that should not happen with 'Always on'?

There are a lot of things that can cause this. If you can reproduce the long delay, you might be able to use
    DaaS
to get some data on it. You can also enable failed request tracing to see where you are taking a long time.

  • Nowadays my iMac likes to slow down and its display suddenly goes black. why do these things happen?

I don't know why but a couple of days before, I opened a website and suddenly it became slow. Then the next day when I was opening something which I forgot what it was, and then it went black and I tried every button and suddenly the front row appeared. Today, after I logged in, I opened Safari and then it went black and when I pushed a random button, the log in box appeared. iMac is supposed to be immune to viruses right?

It sounds like you may have a failing hardware component.  I would recommend you insert Disk 2 of your Original Installation disks that came with your iMac and boot from it by holding down the Option - D keys, and run the Extended Apple Hardware Test to diagnose what may be failing.  It is unfortunately possible that you have an intermitent fault in your hardware that could be tough to find.
    Hope this helps

  • Screen, dock and gesture slow-show and flicker

    Hi all,
Since yesterday I began having a weird thing with my rMBP.
It began by a line across the screen, just below the middle.I decided to let my computer sleep the night after shutting him down. The following morning the line was gone, but now I get a slow down in all my gesture actions (exspose, mission control etc.), fast scrolling also makes a kind of a flicker and rebound effect, and the dock hide\un-hide & zoom effect works slow and flickers.
I searched the forum and try all the tips I found (deleting the login items, safe mode, verify disk etc.) but nothing works.
    Dead end...
I'm using a OS X Mavricks for the past few month and everything was just peachy up until now.
Please advise. I'm feeling helpless right now...
    Thanks

Miriam, don't assume that nothing worked. As I said before, the problem was intermitent and after doing all that none of the things have happened again yet. I do not know what "Disk Permissions" are, but since Disk Utility said that some were repaired, I choose to assume that fixed something that was wrong. So far - so good today. If the problems reappear I will post again.
And don't be sorry, as the advise I obtained here was valuble to me. I am a stickler for solving macproblems myself, and since I know very little about OSX, (having been a OS9 holdout until last spring), I have learned new things to try when a problem arises...and they always do. Now I must learn what Disk Permisions are, and what the heck OnyX and CRON mean. A new mission.
I bought this G5 new in early April. Another assumption on my part was that since this was one of the last builds of an iMac G5 before they went with intel, that I could avoid the logic board problems that persisted with the earlier models. I'm still sticking to that story.
    S
ps - all I bought was a plastic container for my dog's food and water socks for my grandson. But there can be satisfaction in even the smallest purchase, eh? Retail Therapy, mmmm. My mac gets nothing today. It must first succumb to my will :>)

  • Wifi slow on 2010 macbook pro but not IPad or IPhones

Internet has been intermitted and  slow periodically on my 2010 macbook pro, IOS is up to date 10.8.5. Not a router issue. IPad & IPhones work fast on wifi. even with other devices off of wifi still slow.  tried switching to 8.8.8.8 still no dice.

  • After effects CS6 too slow on Mac Pro (simple tasks)

    Hi everyone,
I've been trying to find a solution here, but I don't know why my Mac Pro (2010 8 core, 6 RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB) is this slow even when I use the pen tool when applying a stroke to a text. Why could this be? Some setting that I have to change? It's kind of intermitent. Some times it works well (if I reboot) .But I can't work like this. Sometimes I have to wait even to click on File.
    Thanks a lot in advance

You'll have to get used to creating Ram Previews and using AE's interface in the right way. You should really go through the getting started materials on the home page and take a look at the FAQ. AE is a layer based pixel calculating beast that will do a lot more to a movie at 60 frames per second than Photoshop will do on to a still image. After Effects is essentially Photoshop for movies with a lot more options.
If you want to smoothly drag through the timeline and playback multiple cuts with simple transitions and two or three layers then use Premiere Pro. If you need to use 20 layers and 60 effects to create a stunning composite or motion graphics effect then you're stuck with rendering at just about any price point.

  • JMS Queue slows down after time

              Hi,
Our system makes use of queues extensively. We, pumps trhough tens of thousands

  • 80GB iPod slow and glitchy scrolling...

    Hello,
I'm new to these forums, which is sad because I have had four other iPods. I guess I just never had any serious problems that I couldn't work out on my own. I have a moderately large music collection on my NEW 80GB video iPod (about 14,500 songs). But I noticed that scrolling, especially through songs, becomes very glitchy and slow when a song is playing. Is anyone else experiencing this and what can I do to fix it?
P.S. If you say try the "5 R's" I am going to SCREAM!!! I've done it and USB 2.0 isn't the fastest way to put 55 gigs of music back on the iPod. ; )
    Thanks
    PowerBook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1.5GHz , 1.5GB RAM

Thanks for the responses guys. I have reset, but now I will try the dreaded restore again. This time I think I will try only putting a few hundred songs on and no photos or videos. I'm actually hoping that its photos or videos that are making the interface so slow. I'll update this post when i know how it effects it.
TakZim: Is your problem intermitent (only sometimes) or all the time when songs are playing? My problem is ALL THE TIME when playing a song. Also, how full is your 30 gig?

  • Dead phone & intermitent broadband

On Thursday night, we received a phone call, and noticed that the line was very noisy. Shortly after, our phone rang once and then stopped. After that, there was no longer any ringtone when we picked up the phone. Early Friday morning, the phone ran once again, and a quick check revealled we had the ringtone back. Five minutes later, the same one ring, and the line is dead again. And it's been dead ever since.
We have tried a corded phone in all sockets, and a cordless phone in all sockets, and it's always the same problem.
Oddly, our broadband still works, but it is much slower than usual, and is intermitent as well.
An online BT line check claims the fault is with our equipment, and not the network, though given the tests we've done I can't see how it can be our equipment.
We haven't changed any of the sockets, cables or anything like that, and have been with BT at this house for 9+ years, so nothing has changed at all.
Does anyone have any suggestions? The BT website says we can have an engineer come out, but will be charged if it's not their equipment at fault, and while I can't see how it can be our equipment and therefore must be BT's equipment, I'd really rather not be charged for a call out!

Sorry a little confused here? Im a little confused as to whether you're referring to a NTE5 master, or have you got an exterior NTE5 socket?
On this picture which part of the plate is the wire connected to?
Does your master look like this? I presume it does

  • Windows PCs extremely slow in Airport extreme networks

We have a large deployment of Aiport extreme mesh network. Since the beginning we been experiencing issues with all PCs. Usually my macbook pro will do a speedtest and give 30-35mb/s on it while the PCs will only do 2-3 and its intermitent. They are always reporting connectivity drops too. Also access to a NAS is extemely slow from the PCs. Anyone have any clue as to how to fix this. I assume its a windows issue but after doing lots or research everyone reports it but no one has been able to fix it. Any clues as to what could be the culprit. All PCs are 2011 or late 2010 Lenovo with windows 7
    Thanks for any help
    t

Thanks. If the problem occurs on every Mac or other device using that base station, there really is not anything else worth checking. It could be a DNS problem associated with your ISP, or it could be a corrupted parameter in the base station. To fix the latter would require a "hard reset" followed by configuring it again:
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.
If the slow page loads still occur, you might temporarily try a public DNS such as OpenDNS, which will bypass the DNS your ISP uses. You can try that before or after resetting the base station.

  • Slow response from user input

    Hi.
I have a very strange problem with some of my clients. Sometimes they experience a huge delay between key pressed on keyboard and actual character printed on monitor. So there is a simple text item involved and when the user starts typing the delay could be two or even three seconds between user input (each character) and actual forms displaying it.
First I suspected network contention but I am not quite sure if there is any network traffic (client browser -> application server) involved while user is typing text into text item. Next I tried to monitor clients machine processes (like anti virus program) but no luck. I have also tried various JRE versions but again no luck.
I am using 11.1.2.1 version of forms with Mozilla and JRE 1.6.35 on client side.
Does anybody have/had similar experience? Any suggestion in helping resolving the issue appreciated.
Also I am really curious what is happening (is there any network traffic involved) while user is typing text into text item where there is no trigger on that item except when_validate_item.
    Best regards.

Also I am really curious what is happening (is there any network traffic involved) while user is typing text into text item where there is no trigger on that item except when_validate_item.Unless you have implemented a Java Bean on the item to monitor the keystrokes in the field, no events are trigger by the act of typing characters in a field. The act of typing characters in a field occurs completly on the client - no network traffic at this point. Only when a field event occurs (navigation away from the item) will an event occur that would cause network communication between the client and the appilcation server.
Sometimes they experience a huge delay between key pressed on keyboard and actual character printed on monitor. I encountered something similar to this with a user once who complained about how slow the application ran on their computer. The slowness was intermitant and there was no apparent pattern. Like you, I looked at JRE and other things. Finally, told the user to call me when the slowness occured so I could come look at the computer while it was occuring. Turns out, the user had at least 30+ applications running at the same time. The workstation was running Windows XP with 2gb Ram. Looking at their system resources, there was no memory available and the pc was memory thrashing really bad. I had the user close all but the absolute necessary programs and our Forms application started responding quickly again. After a little user education - miraculously, the slowness problem went away. :)

  • My internet is intermitent

My internet is intermitent, works good sometimes and doesn't other times.  I've trouble shooted both the modem and time capsule several times with several computers.  It looks to me it might be the router (Time Capsule).  This computer is new and I've heard there are issues with Mountain Lion and slow internet.  Airport Utility really doesn't help.  How to your diagnose potential issues with the Time Capsule router?  Any tips appreciated.

It is tricky to determine where the issues is in the network.
Mountain Lion version of the airport utility is hugely lacking in having no access to the TC log.
So first thing to do is to install 5.6 utility.
There are several methods if you google it.. here is mine, which has one big advantage.. it is free.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0
    Please describe the actual setup.
Type of broadband, modem make and model.. and particularly is it working as router? Can it work as router if you want to?
How is the TC connected and working in what mode?
Ethernet is the only reliable method.. but the TC can be bridged or router.
Do not use wireless link for TC to main router.
Then you need to figure out where the issue is..
    1. Is it wireless?
Now you need to use ethernet and see if issue is wireless.
You can expect much more problems if you use wireless exclusively.. at least for fixing it you need something ethernet connected. When wireless drops out does ethernet still work?
    2. Is it TC as router?
Best thing here is to test using another router.. the modem itself if it has router option or borrow another one.
But there is some things that might help the TC be more reliable.
That is to change firmware to 7.6.1 or 7.5.2
To use all SMB names, short no spaces and pure alplhanumeric.
Give some info and we can work from there.

  • Application running slow in ver 1.5, 1.6 but not in 1.4

We have a application that was running very slow when we used any version sun java instead of MS java in IE6 SP2.
I removed MS Java from IE and installed Sun java 1.4.2_16 and the applications starts in under 10sec's.
But we had to test the other version of java as well, i then installed the other versions from 1.5 update 14 to 1.6 update 4 and the application takes about 30 to 40 sec to load the web page.
I then looked at the development version of java 1.6 update 10 and version 7. In 1.6 update 10 the application would load but would not refresh the applets it would just hang. In version 7 the application would not start up at all.
In all the versions i increased the memory parmeters from 128 to 256 and in version 1.6 i changed it to -Xmx300m as well but still the application was slow loading. Removed all the versions and reinstalled 1.4.2_14 and the application works fine and loads up under 10 sec.
Does any one have any idea why this is happening.
    IE 6 sp2
    XP sp2 been used.

You should try profiling the startup code.
As a first go around, you might try getting a stack trace during the startup process and look for locks (see jstack).
If your application is built on Swing, it's my understanding that the later versions of Java are more strict about use of the Event Dispatch Thread--pay particular attention to activity off the EDT locking the thread.

Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.
Hey everyone.  I am writing about my 13 inch Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Recently it has been extremely slow and on occasion has not started up.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC already, yet it is still very slow.  I have a couple theories about what might have caused it, are they plausible?
Theory 1:  It’s a software problem. I tried to upgrade to 10.8.2 but halfway through the upgrade the computer restarted and somehow I was still on 10.8.1.  For fear of a big issue happening I didn’t try to upgrade again. Perhaps it is a flaw in Apple’s software update?
The important thing to note about this update is that I tried to install 10.8.2 around a month or two weeks BEFORE I started having problems.  So if these issues were due to 10.8.2’s failed update then it certainly was a delayed reaction.
I would of course like to update to 10.8.2 BUT as my computer is acting EXTREMELY slow and having trouble turning on occasionally I am worried the software update will completely brick the machine.  Is that possible?  Should I actually finish through with the software update?
Theory 2:  It was an electricity problem.
The computer died when I was sitting at a café plugged into their wall sockets.  A few days later when I came back to the same spot with my old macbook which is now being used in lieu of the Air it suddenly turned black for a little while. Sensing it might be an electricity surge or something with their system I unplugged the cable.  I am not sure if that was paranoia though.
Can an electricity surge or a bad outlet fry a computer?  Can it fry the ram so the computer is extremely slow? Does that theory hold any water?
Thanks for your help diagnosing this problem.
    All the best.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.
