Intermittent problem with ImageIO reading BMP: Empty Region

I am using imageIO to read in a bmp file, like this:
      ImageInputStream is = ImageIO.createImageInputStream(imgURL.openStream());
      Iterator<ImageReader> rdrs = ImageIO.getImageReaders(is);
      if (rdrs.hasNext()) {
        ImageReader r = rdrs.next();
        r.setInput(is);
        result = r.read(0);
      }(I use the same code to read in a whole bunch of images of various kinds.) In development, I got an empty image, so I added a wait:
MediaTracker mt = new MediaTracker(new MyObserver());
    mt.addImage(iconImage, 0);
    try {
      mt.waitForID(0);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    }which seemed to work fine. Except that sometimes, not always, I got a crash:
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Empty region!
     at javax.imageio.ImageReader.computeRegions(Unknown Source)
     at com.sun.imageio.plugins.wbmp.WBMPImageReader.read(Unknown Source)
     at javax.imageio.ImageReader.read(Unknown Source)I got that sometimes in development, but once I produced the production version it started happening all the time!
Anyone have an idea what's going on??

That was very close to correct. It seems that the WBMP reader mucks up the input stream before the .ico reader can get to it. The .ico plugin, which is available at [http://www.vdburgh.net/2/f/files/ICOReader/ ] puts out a very nice error message to that effect and suggest using a fresh input stream. So this:
      ImageInputStream is = ImageIO.createImageInputStream(imgURL.openStream());
      Iterator<ImageReader> rdrs = ImageIO.getImageReaders(is);
      while (rdrs.hasNext()) {
        ImageReader r = rdrs.next();
        try {
          r.setInput(is);
          result = r.read(0);
          return result;
        } catch (IllegalArgumentException e) {
          System.out.printf("Bad Image:%s%n", e.getMessage());
          is = ImageIO.createImageInputStream(imgURL.openStream());
      }Does the trick! (So far :)

• Problem with ImageIO.read and ImageReader JPG colors are distorted/wrong

2. When posting code, post a minimal example program. You could have filtered
out all the extraneous GUI code, for example. Remember: the shorter the code, the
more likely it is a forum member will read it! Posting long runs of code only
hurts yourself.
3. All that being said, your problem is a simple oversight: notice that the
variable "img" in your try block is a local variable, not the field named "img"
than you test after the try block.
You should have written:
try {
        img=ImageIO.read(fileIn);
} catch (IOException event){
        e.printStackTrace();
}

• Problem with ImageIO.read and ImageReader GIF becomes dark

I am having problems with certain GIF images loading completely dark. I previously had problems with certain JPGs colors being distorted http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=713164&tstart=0. This was a problem in an old JDK.

• Help intermittent problem with logging in

Help i have intermittent problem with logging in, sometimes it just comes up with the desktop without any icons or dock and i have to restart the server so i can log on properly, but it doesn't happen all the time, any ideas would be appreciated???

The clients login window just shakes and won't login. I did find one thing that helps some of my Mac Lab woes.
Some students get a dock that only has 3 icons. These students also will have saving and printing problems when they get this default dock.
I think some of the problems occur when the student gets over quota, some preference files get corrupted.
1. Student will login.
2. Open the student's home folder. Then open Library and Preferences.
3. Find the file com.apple.homesync.plist and delete it.
4. Empty Safari Cache and the user's Trash Can and make sure they are not over quota.
5. Logout and login.
This will fix some problems, but not the problem when students can't login at all.

I’m having an intermittent problem with my midi controllers triggering Mainstage 3.
I’m using a PreSonus Firebox audio interface.
It’s been working fine for months, but now when I first turn on the computer in the morning , I’m not able to trigger MainStage from the keyboard.  I tried different midi controllers, different keyboards, different midi cords, and check midi preferences.  The audio interface is working fine and is recogonized, but the midi doesn’twork.  I re-started the computer several times and then finally it miraculously starts working again.
      I’ve been having to this every day now.  Any help or ideas is very much appreciated.

I Had the same problem with a FireStudio. Try unplugging the FireWire plug and the power plug. Wait for a few seconds, then plug both back in. The light on my FireStudio was flashing blue/red which means "not connecting." I did what I just described, and everything works again. Hope it works for you.

what kind of problem do you have with the microphone?
You may want to take a look at http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802 since its the iphone hardware troubleshooting page.
It could just be a hardware problem. You may need to get it in to an apple store.

• Intermittent problem with Personal Hotspot

Hello All
I think either my iPad 2 or my iPhone 4 is mental.  Can anyone convince me otherwise?
For some months now I have been experiencing an intermittent problem with tethering my iPad 2 to my iPhone 4 Personal Hotspot.
Sometimes it works without a hitch (although I have to turn the Personal Hotspot on the phone off and on again to get iPad to 'see' it) and at others, like now, it shows me the message 'Unable to join the network 'iPhone'.  It throws the message up so quickly that even though it 'sees' the phone in the list of networks, it behaves as though it can't actually be bothered to even try to connect.
I have tried reboots and restarts, 'forgetting' the network, changing passwords, sacrificing a chicken... all the usual stuff.  But still when it gets in this kind of mood it stubbornly refuses to do anything.  I have even taken it to the Apple store where, not surprisingly it worked first time and the assistant looked at me as though I was an idiot.  It then proceeded not to work for a couple of days again as if punishing me.  There is no problem with the general Wi-Fi connection as I have another phone (an Android) that I run as a Hotspot too.  It has never once had a problem connecting to this or any other Wi-Fi connection..
Confusingly, and rather irritatingly, after a few days of this not-connecting lark it will have a few days of not having a problem connecting at all.  I won't have changed any settings on either iPad or iPhone and so I have no way of figuring out why this is happening.  This has been the same situation with all versions of iOS I have installed ever since buying the phone in April 2012, and the iPad in June 2012.
Please, is there anyone out in the ether that can suggest a solution to this?  Or is one of my Apple products simply mad?  I have given both devices a strong talking-to, but this hasn't sorted the problem either.  Next, I think I might have to try sacrificing a goat.

I have the same issues with my iPhone 5 (6.1.4).  I do not have an answer for you, and perhaps my "workaround" will lead someone with more knowledge about these things to offer us more information.
When I turn on the Personal Hotspot and it does not show up as visible on my iPad or MacBook, or offers that ambiguous message about being unavle to join the network, I perform a few steps that almost always resolves it.  I have to go through these steps twice sometimes.  The order of operations seems to affect the outcome (at least it appears to me that it does)
Turn off WiFi on the client device (iPad, MacBook, Windows laptop, KindleFire, etc)
Turn off Personal Hotspot on iPhone
Turn off Bluetooth on iPhone
Turn off WiFi on iPhone
Then turn on Personal Hotspot and allow it to automatically start WiFi and Bluetooth.
Turn on the client WiFi services.
Connection successful!
As I said, I sometimes need to perform the steps ablve twice, but it eventually works.  It is incredibly frustrating to go through these hoops to make the device perform.  I do not know precisely when the problem began to occur, but I don't think it did not occur on my iPhone 4s with IOS5.
Any help from the Apple guys would be appreciated.  I think it is a software issue, because the shutdown of services and restart seems to resolve the issue.  I guess I might take a trip to the Aple Store to have them look at this behavior.

• Why am I having intermittant problems with my Galaxy Note 4 touch screen?

I've had my new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 for two days now and have noticed intermittant problems with the touch screen.  I've even added more touch screen sensitivity in the settings area and it has NOT helped at all.  Sometimes I can tap on the screen repeatedly and find the phone not respond, then all of a sudden it responds.  As I keep using the touch screen...suddenly it stops responding again.  It's extremely frustrating especially when it's a brand new phone.  I have now found several other reports of this on the internet, but have not found a fix.  Suggestions (besides reset to factory settings and install each app one by one and test the phone)?  Since it's an intermittant problem, it's hard to tell if any particular app is the sole contributing factor to this.  Based on my experience and that of others...this appears to be a fairly common "bug" that we consumers are experiencing.  Help!?

If you are experiencing problems with your Samsung Galaxy Note 4 touch screen, please continue by adding your comments here and hit the like button so we can elevate this issue to Verizon and Samsung!

I ended up getting a new phone, straight through Apple.  I called their technical support and went through all he basics again and they decided to replace it.  Was a pretty quick process - after defaulting and resetting the whole phone (about 2 hours),  I called them back to inform that there was no change, so they set up the order.
I had to give my CC# so they could hold a charge on it (in case I didn't send my old phone bach, which they sent me a pre-posted package to send it in anyway).  Had a brand new iPhone 4S in my hands in 4 days, which was pretty decent.  I had uploaded everything previously to iCloud, so setting up the new phone was a snap.
Only thing I really didn't like was they charged me almost 30 bucks for shipping or processing, or something.  Not so sure that should have been my responsibility after spending so much on a brand new product, only to have to have it warrantied after, like, a month.

• Intermittent problem with voice mail

Siince I had a new system installed two years ago on my phone, I have intermittent problems with the phone which tech support does not want to resolve.  They says that unless they see it, it is not their problem.  Nice attitude.
I call voice mail, and it doesn't recognize my pin.  I try it again, doesn't recognize the pin.  Then I enter my phone number.  Doesn't recognize the phone number, tells me that I don't have a voice mail on my phone.  I hang up, and call again.  This time I do get through with the phone number.  I hear my message.  Now I can't erase the message.  I have to call back to hopefully get through to the message.
It is ridiculous.  I am ready to cut all phone service to my house if I don't get this fixed.

• Intermittent problem with PC Suite - no text is di...

I have an intermittent problem with PC Suite - every so often it will stop displaying any text.
For eaxmple, right-click on the task bar icon gives a list of icons for backup, messages, sync etc., but the text is missing.  Also, the 'tool-tips' in the application itself are empty grey boxes.
Restarting PC Suite solves the problem for a while, but it always comes back.
The main problem is that when it gets in this state, incoming call alerts don't show the name/number.
Has anyone else had this and managed to sort it.
I'm running PC Suite 7.1.40.6 on a Lenovo ThinkPad T61p running Windows XP SP3.  The phone is a 6230i connected via Bluetooth.
Thanks.
Alan.

Yes the Support line directed me to try a different USB port, with no luck.
Also looked for the connection in windows device manager>>nothing appeared except the computers ports...
Hi, Here is something what you could try to do: 1. Uinstall Nokia PC Suite 6.82.22 (or 6.7 or 6.8x) and restart PC. 2. Go to Windows' Control Panel and open "Add or Remove Programs" application. 3. If there are "PC Connectivity Solution" (or "Nokia PC Connectivity Solution" and/or "Nokia Connectivity Cable driver", uninstall those and restart PC. 4. Install PC Suite 6.82.22 and restart PC. If problem happen again: 1. Go to Windows' Control Panel and open "Add or Remove Programs" application. 3. Select "PC Connectivity Solution", click "Change" and then "Repair". 4. After Repair, restart PC. And if no help again: Save RegPCSuiteComponents.bat file to C:\Program Files\PC Connectivity Solution\ folder. Then go that folder and run it (double-click that file). After that restart PC. Does any of those help you??
I've tried your 1st & 2nd suggestions....but I can't find the "connectivity solution" folder you mention (and being a complete noob (!) I don't know what a .bat file is (nor how to use it lol)
In fact I can't find PC Suite anywhere in the program files. I REALLY think that it wasn't installed OK....it should not have taken less than one second to download if it took 1 3/4 hrs initially

• Intermittent problem with the line

I have an intermittent problem with my line which crackles or you miss parts of a conversation because voices spoken or listened to keep coming and going all the time or the phone cuts out altogether
Telephone the help line which said that the line was OK at that moment as they did the other time I called keeps on happening on a daily basis every time we get a call.
Next door neighbour and other neighbours around this close all linked to the same local bt or open reach cabinet all tell me they have the same problem.
Neighbours called their own phone company who rent the line off of BT who got an open reach engineer out the next day and found that the local exchange or cabinet next to the house across the road from me all the phone line coverings have corroded away and that the wires are all damaged and corroding away or rotting away.
So the local road (culdisack) has to be dug up and the exchange and wires have to be replaced from that junction box to the next junction box or exchange, what i want to know is when will this be done as all the neighbours and i have been reporting it to BT for ages but it was not till next door got their company to investigate was the problem found.
How long till we have to wait for a repair and better lines back to a good service, Months, years. when?
It would not be so bad but i have a lifeline connected to my phone so if i am in trouble it calls for help but with the fault with the line half the time it cannot get a single message or call out and before now i have been left on the floor for ages before someone came back home to get me off the floor as the box just said the phone line was disconected and could not get a dial tone or call out.
Tim
