Internal speakers suddenly will not unmute. My headphones work, and there is a red light coming from the headphone jack

I put my volume on mute a few weeks ago, and I don't know if I have used it again since then or not, but now the volume will not unmute. There is a red light glowing out of the headphone jack. Sound through headphones works. I've tried updating and restarting my computer. Help?

A PRAM-reset might also help:
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Try this a few times.

This is perfectly normal. You can run an optical digital out this way. You need a mini-toslink adapter like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini-TOSLINK
Then you can set the digital out as default (instead of Speakers) to run audio to a surround sound reciever via optical fiber.

My macbook pro volume is locked. there is a circle with a line through it when i press the volume buttons but no volume will sound. music and videos will not play and there is no red light on in the headphone jack.

I tried all of the fixes above and quite a few others like resetting the pram and nvram and what finally worked for me was resetting my sound card from Terminal. Open Terminal and enter the command sudo kill -9 `ps ax|grep 'coreaudio[a-z]' | awk '{print $1}'`. It will ask for your password, enter in your password and press enter. The sound card will be reset and your audio and volume control should be restored..

I read somewhere about wiggling a toothpick around in there, but that didn't work, any other ideas.
This happened after I had a 1/4 to 1/8 converter plugged in there to use a little mini amp.
I've lost the use of speakers.

Just to rule out the obvious make sure your mute switch (F3) is not on. If your 'switch is stuck' you would see a red light coming from the headphone port.
Double check your Sys Prefs - Sound settings ...if things still are not working you might try a SMC reset followed by a Pram reset that would restore your orig. settings.

Insert a headphone jack and remove it and see if the light goes out. The red light indicates the switch didn't switch from head phone to your Mac's speakers. Some folks have actually used a match stick to undo the switch.

Plug and unlpug the headphone jack with some intention to get the mechanical switch to flip.

You might be seeing the proximity sensor. It is how the phone tells when it's near your face and blanks the screen so you don't accidentally touch things with your cheek. It's near the front facing camera.

I just bought a MBP after my PC crashed. How do I set up my itunes library on my new Mac? I do not have a backup drive, and I was unable to recover anything from the trashed PC drive. Can the library be rebuilt/restored??

Finally made the switch from PC to Mac, after my PC crashed and burned. I Do not have a backup on an external drive, and I was unable to recover any data from the trashed PC hard drive.
Can I download my library, or is there a way to get my itunes content on my new Macbook Pro? I have almost 10 years of music and stuff on my iTunes, so I really hope there is a fix!

I have a new Apple ID and have updated it in iTunes. However it still says the old ID in settings under iCloud. It will not let me change it and prompts me to enter my password for the old ID. I put in the old Password but it doesn't work.

I changed my Apple ID and it is not changing on my ipad. I did change it in iTunes but I can't change it or delete or update in settings under iCloud. It prompts for the password to the old id I put that in and it tells me that's not correct. I put the new password in and it tells me that's not correct. HELP!

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). My ipod touch will not turn on or charge, and there is NO WAY to find the serial number to sort it out

Does anybody know what I can do in this situation?
I've had the ipod touch for over 3 years, was given as a gift, has never been badly damaged or anything.
It just won't charge at all - I have tried leaving it plugged into the computer for hours, trying different cables. I left it plugged into the wall overnight, and still the dead battery icon is the only thing that comes up.
I have tried resetting and restarting it but nothing's happened. I've tried contacting Apple for support but they can't do anything without my serial number - which is too faded on the back of the product to make out. Obviously I can't find the serial number on the device as it won't turn on, I don't have any packaging for it left, and it won't connect to iTunes either. I've also looked at my devices in iTunes to try find it but it's not there.
Basically, I've tried pretty much everything the internet has suggested and it's not getting me anywhere.
I have no idea why this is happening and right now I'm at a deadend so please let me know if you have any further advice you can offer. Thank you!

Boot Camp Windows 7 do not recognise wifi, ethernet, USB ports and has a scary red light in audio jack output!

I have just tried to install Windows 7 x86 version on my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion and a couple of strange things start appearing:
    1. On the Boot Camp Assistant first screen, I tried to download the drivers and after about 15min the system responding that the server did not responded.
    2. I went further and installed the Win7 without making the ISO as requested by the assistant and with no driver burned on a CD
    3. After installed the Win7 I noticed that it did not recognise the WIFI in my home nor any other in the area;
    4. There is a freaking RED LIGHT coming from my Audio jack output that I have never seen in my life... and that scares me!
    5. The USB ports does not works on Win7 side !
    6. The ethernet does not work, Win7 just don´t recognise it...
    7. There is no Boot Camp on Win7 side to be deployed...
Basically I will use Windows to run Quicken for Windows, but I can´t acces my backups on Dropbox because I do not have intercet access, and obviously I am not going to be able to back up new files.
Is there someone able to help me?
I have:Boot Camp 5.0.0 / Win7 Ultimate x86 / MacBook 2,5Ghz Intel Core i5 MID-2012 / Memories 4GB amd 500GB/ OS X 10.8.1 / Boot Camp partition with 50Gb for Windows.

Did you make sure to install the Bootcamp utilities after installing Windows? They can be found in the boot disk/usb flash that Bootcamp creates (check for a folder called "Windows Support").These should enable sound/video/trackpad/etc.to work with full functionaliity under Windows (you may need to reboot after doing so). After installing them, you may also want to run Windows Update to make sure you get the latest drivers.
As far as the red light, many models of Macbook Pros are equipped with a digital Audio out. You can either use the standard analog 3.5mm Stereo jack (standard headphone connector), a 3.5mm miniSPDIF digital coax or miniTOSLINK digital optical cable (hence the red light). Windows may not know how to handle to audio out port until the proper drivers are installed and it may be enabling the digital signal by default. Installing the drivers mentioned above should set this back to normal operation.

My 15" late 2006 MBP has just stopped producing sound from the internal speakers and for the first time there is a red light visible inside the headpbone output port. Apple support says contact support but since I'm a long time out of even my extended warranty I wondered if anyone had a fix-it suggestion I might try myself?

Try to plug the headphone into and out of the headphone socket couple of times
to flip the microswitch in the socket.
Red light visible means sound output is stuck in digital mode.
