Internationalization in java:

We need to have traditional character support(chinese, japanese etc) for our applications. The traditional text is available in the oracle database and is displayed correctly in toad but when we access it thru browser/stand alone java app, it is not shown. The language pack is installed correcly on the machine. What else is required to be done to show it? I don�t think so any locale specific settings needs to be done in the application.

Java Internationalization and .properties files

Hi everyone,
Isn't it problematic that the way to internationalize your java apps ( .properties files ) doesn't support UTF-8 and you have to user gibberish looking unicode escapes. Some will say that you don't need to write and the converters or editors will handle the ascii conversion but the requirement for such a intermediate process doesn't seem right. Sometime you have to edit some string on the server and it should be human readable using text editors that support UTF-8. I thought loadFromXML and storeToXML methods that came with java 1.5 seemed to solve the problem but than noticed that PropertyResourceBundle doesn't support xml properties files. Is backwards compatibility the reason that properties files aren't utf-8 by default?

Internationalization in Xellerate

Hi,
I confess I am a relatively new user to xellerate identity management. I am looking if there is any documentation that talks about how to use internationalization in xellerate. First, Is this feature available? if yes, does anyone know of a place where i can download manuals / help docs that talk about this.
I have gone through the product documentation that comes with the installer. I did see a section about how to customise the text and labels etc using the xlWebAdmin.properties file. But could not find anything about how to achieve internationalization.
Any help would be really appreciated.

File encoding problem in solaris sparc

hi there,
I wrote a simple program to create a text file that with the content of japanese character that same way I wrote in Windows JP Platform.
However, the encoding is different from what window, oracle(solaris sparc) does.
this is very interesting that we view from oracle and its workd fine from Oracle which run on the same machine(solaris Sparc) .
I believe I missed out some setting for the internationalization for JDK in solaris, but I'm not familiar with solaris. Hence, I would like to seek is there one of you came across this before? Please help.

Please note that 58-5-101 is double full width JP character.
The main problem is the "-" encoding for solaris. It changed to '?'
My env are,

I don't fully understand what you're asking for, but I wonder if this might help : the default encoding of a Solaris machine is probably EUC (In Windows, this is SJIS). So you'll probably have to read the file using the EUC encoding. Have a look at InputStreamReader(InputStream in, String enc) where you can set the encoding of the input stream.

Problem in displaying Japanese characters on the browser.

Hope one of you could help me in this!!
We are using SHIFT_JIS character encoding in our jsps to display Japanese characters.

Is there any other configuration required on server side to let the Japanese characters being displayed? Because what I am getting on screen is quite annoying. Well something like below.

Even though my knowledge in Japs isn't too good :-)) I can understand that these are not Japanese. I believe I am missing something in terms of server side configuration, Can anybody point that out. (Maybe some of the Japanese developers in here).
This could not be a client side issue, since from the same machine I can access other Japanese sites and they display properly. Let me know if anybody can help.

Your text in the JSP should be UTF-8 nevertheless - as would be ideal
for internationalization. Java comes with a command-line conversion tool
native2ascii which is bidirectional.
As non-Japanese I am not certain whether "SJIS" might not be better (there
are some name variations in java).
The HTML generation will translate these characters to SHIFT_JIS in your case.
Where the target encoding cannot handle the intended character it receives a
question mark - hat you saw.
Furthermore you need a proper font in HTML and under Windows (window title).
Your webserver should have east-asian support. Though Japanese (and English)
are standard, I, as non-japanese am not certain about SHIFT_JIS.
Also there is some freedom in choice for a japanese encoding.

Cannot display BIG5 characters for web applications deployed to 9iAS

I have just installed the J2EE and Webcache module of Oracle9iAS Release 2 to
my Windows NT Server 4.0 and deployed a simple web application to it. However,
I found that the JSP cannot display chinese (Big5) characters correctly. My JSP
is something like:

On the other hand, I tried to re-direct the standard output to a log file and
do the following in my servlet.
System.out.println(SOME_BIG5_CHARACTERS);
Now, the Big5 characters CAN be displayed correctly in the log file. So, I am
confused with where the problem is.
Here are my settings to my 9iAS:
1) Using regedit, I have set the NLS_LANG variable of the corresponding
ORACLE_HOME to TRADITIONAL CHINESE_TAIWAN.ZHT16BIG5
2) In the file %ORACLE_HOME%\Apache\Jserv\conf\jserv.properties, I have
inserted the following line:
wrapper.env=NLS_LANG=TRADITIONAL CHINESE_TAIWAN.ZHT16BIG5
3) In the file %ORACLE_HOME%\Apache\Apache\conf\httpd.conf, I have added the
following line:
PassEnv NLS_LANG
4) In the file %ORACLE_HOME%\opmn\conf\opmn.xml, I have added the following
line to the corresponding OC4J instance:

I met a similar problem before but not exactly your case. When I compile the JSP by Jdeveloper, it will convert the chinese characters to strange characters. It makes me crazy to handle the chinese characters ...
Anyway, by my experience, you better isolate the chinese characters from your JSP or Java programs. Instead, put all language dependent text in a properties file and then use native2ascii to covert your properties file into Unicode. Of course, u need to change your page charset to UTF-8.

Currency input verifier for multilanguage support

i must build a multilanguage Java GUI with currency input fields. How can i create a language independed currency input verifier?
Or exist a language independed Java Swing curreny component cotrol?

Menues in english and spanish languages

Hi! I was given a Swing interface:
10 menu items, each one launches 5 to 10 submenues, each one launches several panels all in Spanish Language like this:
private JMenu jMenuFile = new JMenu();
jMenuFile.setText("Archivo");
Now I was asked to change it to let the user select the language he wants all the menues to be displayed, for the moment only 2 languages: Spanish and English (but in the future maybe more).
I think there could be a file where all the tags could be in both languages, for the tag "Archivo" in spanish, in english should be the tag "File". But before reinventing this wheel (which of course I am not able to, i'm new to java) I'm here asking for advice or an example..

I also started to make a library to localize standard actions (open source). Currently only english and german are supported. To support spanish you have to put a file StandardActions_es.properties in a package org.softsmithy.lib.swing.action and fill in the values for the keys used in http://softsmithy.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/softsmithy/trunk/lib/src/org/softsmithy/lib/swing/action/StandardActions.properties?view=markup
(Note: that the localization files are not complete yet. I can provide you more information if you are interested.)

Hi,
How can I use embed fonts for multi language support. If i set embed fonts = false; then the text input is taking any language but i need to use embed fonts as well as need to support any language

Change language during Runtime

i have following problem: I use Resourcebundles to internationalize my Java Applet. Now i want to add two Buttons where the user can change the language.
I changed my i18n class to the following code:

had their text set (e.g. JButton.setText(...)) and all those components are
not aware of the fact that you changed your Locale so they don't do
anything.
Therefore I extended all these Swing classes and added an interface:
LanguageListener which gets invoked when a Locale has changed.
The Language listener just extends the PropertyChangeListener.
When the method is invoked the Component sets its text again according
to the now current Locale. It's a bit of work but it pays off ;-)

Applying Java's internationalization facilities to a web application

I am a member of a software developing team (using Java-based technologies). Our web application consists of a:
1. static part (HTML-based pages), and
2. a dynamic part (using JSPs and servlets, mainly)
The static part of our web site is currently supported in four languages, having our html pages replicated four times. On the other hand, the dynamic part of our web (that is, the part of our web site restricted to authorized
users only, using JSPs and servlets) is only supported in one of those languages and we are thinking of extending it to support, at least, one more of the other languages. Obviously, it wouldn't be manageable replicating the JSP
pages (about a hundred or so) for the new language, so we are thinking of using Java's internationalization facilities. According to what I have understood, we have two possibilities, basing the internationalization process on:
a. properties files (one for each language?)
b. class files
Knowing all this, our problem is a matter of organization of those approaches. How could I organize the different files? Should I use a database to store the messages, instead of using files (either properties files or class files)? Or might I create different files depending on where the string texts appear? For example, create a
properties file or a class file containing the different string messages in every JSP file? Any other ideas of organization or design would be highly appreciated. Do you know any other web site where internationalization has been applied or case studies dealing with this matter?

Whether that be list or property resource bundles, the code is already written to load and manage resource bundles in these formats. I have personally worked with database-backed resource bundles, but that required custom code to be written.
On a performance note, list resource bundles are found before property resource bundles. In a development environment, I've used property resource bundles and when moving an application into production, I have gone through the conversion of the property to list resource bundle format. There's a utility in our book, "Java Internationalization" (O'Reilly) which does conversion from property to list resource bundle format for you.

dealing with this matter?Also in our book, we advocate using different resource bundles for holding different types of localized data. For example, there's nothing that says you cannot have resource bundles devoted to user exception messages, status messages, regular text, prompt text, etc... By splitting up your resources into different categories and placing them in an appropriately named resource bundle, you can know exactly where certain resources will be pulled from when your application is running.

How to do internationalization with Sun Java Studio Creator?

the Sun Java Studio Creator seems to be a great peace of software ;-) Currently I'm trying to design some forms for a hello-world-test-project. My question now is: how can I realize internationalization with property-bundles? I already managed it to create my own bundles, I set up a few locales (de, en, fr) and put in some "SayHello" Variables. But how can I associate my locale-variables in the .propertie-files with the value- or text-attributes of the UI-Components using the form designer?

Difficulty with java Unicode for internationalization

First, my appologies for the cross-post. I'm not sure if this is a
configuration issue, simple java / jsp problem or something others
performing internationalization may have encountered.
We're generating UTF-8 HTML pages using .jsp's, Weblogic 5.1 sp5, jdk
1.2.2 and NT 4.0 w/ the Euro patch.
We have the ability to serve UTF-8 encoded data from flat files and our
database but we're having some problems serving Unicode that have been
"escaped" into java variables.
If we use the &#nnnnn (nnnn is decimal unicode value for character) HTML
method for displaying unicode characters, they display just fine.
However, if we create a java String or char and push a character into it
via \uNNNNN (NNNNN is hex unicode value for character) and then display
the content of this variable through the HTML page, something goes
awry. Here's an example:
<% String checkChar = new String("\u0000");%>
<td class="smallfont"><% checkChar = "\u00A5";%><%=checkChar%></td>
<td class="smallfont"><% checkChar = "\u20A5";%><%=checkChar%></td>
<td class="smallfont"><% checkChar = "\u30A5";%><%=checkChar%></td>
This should display the Yen symbol, Mil Sign and a Katakana small 'u',
respectively. Oddly enough, it displays the Yen symbol all three
times. I've had similar results with other series of Unicode characters
(several Unicode characters that share the same second hex digit.)

We've added "-Dfile.encoding=UTF8" to the java invocation in
startWebLogic.cmd and we've verified that the setting is persisted into
the .jsp. Unfortunately, our output isn't affected.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? It appears that java is somehow
assuming the first hex digit is always "00." Does this sound familiar
to anyone?

I was having similar problem.
I was able to display &#nnnnn and the chinese character
from database, but not \unnnn.
I think Kevin Burns was making a good suggestion by
giving page directive in your jsp file (UTF8) 'cause that's what
I did AND it started to display \unnnn just fine from
my property bundle files. You may give a try!
But my problem is that after I gave the UTF8 page directive,
the stuff I'm reading from db (oracle 8.1.6, with NLS_LANG)
displayed as garbage. Do you think it's because that
WLS supports only Unicode?

We believe that the 16-bit characters we're passing around through Java
variables are being cliped to 8-bit characters as they're written to HTML.
Does anyone know when (which service pack) provided WL 5.1 JSP with the
ability to handle multi-byte charactersets? We're currently using WL 5.1
sp5.
