Internationalization problems

Sorry if this has been already answered, but there are tons of similar (but not same) questions around about internationalization and character sets and I haven't been able to solve the problem.
First, a summary about translating messages and internationalization - correct me if I'm wrong:
I have to translate the following:
1) Jhs Exception messages (in JhsUserMessages.java)
2) messages.js messages
3) user interface texts
For point 1) I created my own JhsUserMessages_gr.java with the translations of Jhs messages. It works, but I had to include it seperately as a property of the MessageResources factory in struts_config.xml . This doesn't scale well and doesn't seem correct. Am I doing something wrong? Anyway, the correct messages do appear in greek.
For 2), I have a problem. messages.js states that special characters have to be inserted with their codes - so I'll have to use an automated tool to generate Unicode codes for my greek sentences and then include these unicode codes in messages.js. Am I right? Is there any simpler way?
In 3) I have the most serious problem:
I saw that JHeadstart uses ${nls.SOMETHING} in its generated code. I tried the same in my project (which is JHS-enabled, but not automatically generated).
I had the following problem: if I used greek in application.properties_gr (or was it application_gr.properties?) the characters were appearing incorrectly. I read that I should avoid special characters in application.properties files (what's their use, then? Translating from english to american? ;)). So I created a custom bundle class (Tags.java) and included it in the page as a bundle. Of course, this doesn't solve the problem correctly (because I cannot find a way to dynamically choose between Tags_en and Tags_gr for example). Is there such a way? I suppose that it should be some special declarations of the bundles in configuration files or overriding some function, but I don't know more.

Hello
I guess your problem is encoding. There's many possible points of failure if you're using many 3rd party components. However there's a couple of things you should try at first:
Set the content-type of your response to UTF-8:
     response.setContentType("text/html; charset=UTF-8");
You can add that line in the begin of your servlet's execution point - doGet-method - or any preprosessor filter you've any. Point is that you set content-type before you've committed any data to output stream.
The other trick is to set system property "file.encoding". You can use this from command line using flag "-Dfile.encoding=UTF8" when launching java-application (see tomcat's launching bat to set this). Or you can tell this explicitly from you application:
     System.setProperty("file.encoding", "UTF-8");
With JSP-pages you should use page-directive to set content-type to utf8.
I really hope this helps. Encoding is pretty tricky with different servers. Oh, and of course there are couple encoding-related bugs in the specs... :o

    Can anyone helps me ? That is the problem with file fmrRUw.res ?

    Hi Sergey,
    I haven't work with Form 9. But I think:
    1. You could try to use
    NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_CIS.CL8MSWIN1251.
    2. Try to find out a better solution on www.google.com
    For example:

  • [internationalization] problems with Chinese characters

    Hi everybody.
    I'm working on a program and i'd like to translate it into several languages. Until now I've managed to launch my program in 3 languages : French, English and German. I do it by asking the user which language he'd like to select by means of a JComboBox. Then the right Locale is selected and the right text is called by the RessourceBundle and so on .... Actually I've encountered no problems with "latin lettered" languages.
    I also tried to introduce Chinese in my program and that's how problems come in. The way Chinese is introduced in the program is exactly the same that of French, English and German. The .properties file I use is MyRessourcesMainTitle_zh.properties and one line is stored in it: title = 中文
    However when I run the program and selected Chinese as language an error pops up in the DOS console : "Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.util.MissingRessourceException : Can't find ressource for bundle java.util.PropertyRessourceBundle, key title".
    I would like to point out that I saved my *.properties in a former *.txt file encoded in Unicode. Saving it encoded either in Unicode big endian or in UTF8 ends with the same problem. However the program ran just fine when I encoded it in ANSI but it's worthless insofar as the Chinese characters are transformed into "?".
    Would anyone have an idea about how to implement sucessfully Chinese characters in my program ?

    I dont think you can print chinese chars at the console on window
    to print the character codes to the console use someting like that
    char [] chars = request.getParameter("whatever").toCharArray()
    for(each chars){
    System.out.println((int)chars);
    then check if you got the corresponding chinese char

    Joe,
    -What version of the product are you using?
    -What does the call to your i18n:localize tag look like?
    -What does the call to your i18n:getMessage tag look like?
    If your localize tag is called with no parameters then the getMessage tag
    will use the locale of the JVM that you are running. These are going to
    be different between the two operating systems.
    Thanks,

  • JRE 1.1 AWT / 1.3 Swing Internationalization Problems. Please Help!!

    This is driving me crazy. I ended up distilling down a bug in a big program to a few lines of code. I was then able to extract that code to a small program to reproduce the problem.
    I am running JRE 1.3 with Swing. But the program I want to run is 1.1 with AWT. (I use a online 1.1 compiler to compile that program.)
    Here is the 1.1 AWT program:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.lang.*;
    class Awt {
    public static void main(String s[]) {
    Label label = new Label("\u65e5\u672C\u8A9E");
    label.setFont(new Font("MS Gothic", Font.PLAIN, 24));
    Frame frame = new Frame();
    frame.add(label);
    frame.pack();
    frame.show();
    When I run it, I get blocks instead of Japanese characters.
    But when I port it to 1.3 and Swing, it displays properly. The code for that is:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.lang.*;
    class Swing {
    public static void main(String s[]) {
    JLabel label = new JLabel("\u65e5\u672C\u8A9E");
    label.setFont(new Font("MS Gothic", Font.PLAIN, 24));
    JFrame frame = new JFrame();
    frame.getContentPane().add(label);
    frame.pack();
    frame.setVisible(true);
    Can anyone help me figure this out? I don't want to download JRE 1.1 (and replace my 1.3) just for this program. And it would be too cumbersome to rewrite the program into Swing.
    Also, it can't be a font problem because my MS Gothic works in the 1.3 Swing version.
    I have already changed the font.properties.ja file to font.properties.

    You asked this same question 2 hours ago.
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=608654&messageID=3326676
    Don't clutter the forum by posting multiple questions on the same topic.
    In fact this is you 3rd posting on this topic and you didn't list to point 2 and 3 from my reply in you previous posting, so why should I try helping again.
    By the way you can't compare:
    if (e.getSource() == "one")
    getSource() returns an Object not a String.
    The correct way to test which button was click was given to you in your 4th last posting. So you have at least 4 postings on this topic.
    Now isn't this difficult trying to have a conversation when you have 4 posting going on the same subject?
    Of course you can also read the Swing tutorial on "How to Use Buttons" for another way to test buttons. This solutions allows you to test for a String:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/button.html
    However, I recommed the suggest from your 4th last posting.

  • App Internationalization problem

    Hello,
    i have a problem when displaying arabic letters on swing labels , i have a resourcebundle file that translate the app's labels into arabic language, when i make the Locale object "ar", "AR" it displays '?' instead of arabic letter, what is the problem?? Please, help me........
    thanks.

    Depending upon which version of Java you are using, there are different answers.
    With 1.3, the labels are in properties files. You can add a property file with the labels for a JFileChooser, JColorChooser, and/or JOptionPane. All of these are set in the files basic.properties, or their localized version. The standard JDK from Sun includes ones for Japanese basic_ja.properties and Chinese basic_zh.properties. You would need to create one named appropriately, and located in a directory javax/swing/plaf/basic/resources in your CLASSPATH.
    With 1.2/1.1 (and also working in 1.3), you can just tell the UIManager to use different labels before creating the component. For French, you would do the following (assuming my French is correct):
    UIManager.put("OptionPane.yesButtonText", "Oui");
    UIManager.put("OptionPane.cancelButtonText", "Annulent");
    UIManager.put("OptionPane.noButotnText, "Non");
    UIManager.put("OptionPane.okButotnText, "D'accord");
    The following two links would however be greatly helpful

  • WD Java application translation to japanese not happening

    Hi All,
    I'm working on EP7.0 version and i need to do translation of webdynpro application into japanese.
    I've done the following:
    1.I created a new .xlf file "<>.wdview_ja.xlf" and translated the labels,text,buttons to "ja" characters.
    2.My folder has two xlf files:one default .xlf and other <>_ja.xlf
    3.I rebuild,reload and deploy the application.
    4.I changed the language of browser settings to ja.
    Now following is the issue:
    When the application is deployed,the standalone application shows all the translated texts,but when i access the same application through portal role i do not see the translation.
    I cleared all my browser cache,navigation cache.
    I tried to shut down my laptop and restart, one time it showed the translation but later on when tried to do the same thing translation was not happening.
    I checked the below thread internationalization problem - default language of wd in portal
    I do not exactly follow what needs to be done in my case.
    But when i checked the "current locale" in language resources it still shows "en" eventhough i changed the browser settings to"ja".
    Can anyone please help me out here.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Pradeep

    Pradeep,
    After rebuild, reload and deploy the application. Could you please check these steps once again?
    1.       Whenever you changed .xls view to ja_xls file
    1.1   Is it created Property file of ja_xls?
    2.       While login into portal, you are not able to see Japanese?
    2.1   Is it your Role, Worksets, Page and IView Names converted into Japanese Language?
    2.2   Check the User:- is it Username is changed to Japanese Language?
    Hope these steps helpful for you !!!

  • ITunes 6: No music shows up in iTunes after upgrading

    I can hardly believe that I am facing the same problems after installing the latest iTunes version (6.0) as I had with installing the version (5.0): All my files have gone and the library screen is completely empty.
    With version 5 there exists a document that helped to solve my problem:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301895
    Can I try the same with the new itunes version or will there be a new release of the document or is there any fix around?
    Thanks for your help!

    I have a similar experience, and haven't solved it yet. I use Windows 2000.
    Could it be an internationalization problem?
    I think my iTunes 5 was an English version, and iTunes 6 is now in Swedish. My music was stored in, IIRC, c:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes, but iTunes 6 wants it in c:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Min Musik\iTunes. The music is still stored in the first (English) path, but iTunes wants it in the Swedish version.
    I tried to change it in the settings dialog, but nothing happened. The instructions in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301895 are a bit complicated, and therefore risky.

    I've done the Internationalization Tutorial. For all of you who remember it: therein one must define an enumeration of cars and places. Within the S2X Editor I edited the *.xlf files for the simple data types and replaced the texts with some real german car types.
    But, when i run the app, the enumeration in the drop down boxes is not shown in german, but still in the english words as proposed in the tutorial. But all other words around, just like the caption und the labels are translated to german.
    How to solve it with the enumeration?
    Thank you for your advice.

    Now as you have the properties file use the s2x editor i.e the editor for the .xlf which you'll find in the <com.sap.app.wd.languages > now you can create your own .xlf file and please rename file <old name>_<language key>.xlf .
    for example language key for german is de.Now you can open it in the s2X editor.
    Under the header tab select the language for which you have specified the key.
    Now in the Resource text tab go and translate the resource text to the specified language.

  • Problems in Internationalization

    Hi All,
    I am trying to internationalize an existing application developed using WDJ. I have created the language specific texts and added them as an .xlf file. The problem is that the texts are not changing even after i change the browser language to German.
    However, after changing the language from English to German, the portal home page texts are getting converted to German, but my application is not getting affected.
    I tried reloading, rebuilding the project. But still no change. But if I create a new project and repeat the process it works. Please let me know if there is any other steps which I have missed out.

    HI Pojith
    When we are doing I18N for that Application. Go to Navigator Tab
    Here Select Particular Projects--à src-àPackages-àsap-àvijay
    To internationalize the Web Dynpro application, copy the automatically generated *.xlf files and save them under a new name in the same directory.
    The new name must meet the following convention:
    u2022 .xlf
    For example, if you are creating *.xlf files for German,
    Use the language key de.
    Here Click on OK
    After that we can edit and translate these new *.xlf files in the S2X Editor.
    ApplyTemFirstView.wdview_de.xlf-àClick on Resource Text Tab
    Select Particular Text and Change the language to German-àClick on EDIT Button
    Here Enter German Lang-àClick on OK
    Now Go to Web Dynpro Explorer Tab
    Select Project-àRC Click on Rebuild Project
    Select Project-àRC Click on Reload
    Then Deploye the Application
    How to Check in Explorer. It is converting to German Language or not
    Open Internet Explorer
    Tool-àInternet Options -àClick on Languages Button-àClick on ADD Button
    Select German Language--àClick on OK
    Now We will Check in Portal
    Created Web Dynpro iView in Portal. That iView assign to the particular WorkSet-àAssign to Role
    Select that user Can Change Language

  • Problem with internationalization

    Hi,
    I'm trying to create an application in which you can choose the language. I've read the trail on the internationalization and I managed to have some results. In fact, for the moment, I have a window with flags when I launch the application, and when I clicked on a flag the real application start with the appropriate language. But i'd like to change the language while the application is running, I can change the Locale settings but I don't know how to transmit it to the differents windows. I could destroy all my object and rebuild all of them, but I'm sure that there is a better solution than this.
    Thank you.

    hi sebastiene,
    you can build up an additional class instantiating a vector which is updated
    whenever you create a new component and thus holds references to all your
    components.
    That class should be generated by the first class of your application and should
    also be passed to alla other classes as an argument. It may have a method
    called:
    public void setComponent(Component componentToSet)
    which sets the correct LookAndFeel of the selected component, whwnever it is
    needed, aven at runtime.
