Internet is painfully slow, across any app.
Hi everyone --
I've searched all of the forum topics I could find related to this, and none of the discussed solutions have helped me.
My internet is brutally slow, regardless of the app, including Safari, App Store, Skype, etc.
Another computer in the household has Windows and is running fine.
I have tried all of the reasonable attempts to fix this that I've read about, including:
Punching in new DNS codes in the Network area of System Preferences.
Deleted the cache, the browser history in Safari, and disabling browser plug ins.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled Flash player (as this is where the connection suffers the most, in trying to stream videos on BBC, YouTube, etc).
Going into my Library then moving and deleting the ".plist" for Safari.
In general, on websites or the App Store for example, what happens is -- basic text will pop up after about 3 or 4 seconds of hanging, then even the slightest bit of content, including thumbnails, take several seconds per image. Anything even slightly more intense on bandwidth, like a streaming video or Flash menu, takes forever to load, if not outright gives up on me and never loads.
My machine is on Snow Leopard, a white Macbook, OSX is currently 10.6.8, which I believe I've had for several months, but this problem is only a day or two old. If I recall correctly, I did install the latest Security Update -- whatever the new ones are circa Feb. 3rd, 2012 -- within a day or two BEFORE this problem started happening... I believe this may be the culprit but strange in that there was some time before this problem surfaced, or so it seemed.
Does anybody know what more I could do?
Thanks!
Coincidence or conspiracy?
Within minutes of posting this question, internet went back to regular speed. Just like that. I have NO idea why. I didn't do anything different after posting my question. Simply time passed. I must emphasize, it was NOT an ISP problem as other machines in the house worked fine all along. So I don't know if something "kicked in" or what, from all the changes I tried, but for now at least, it's working.
Any insight as to what happened here?

Painfully slow startup - any suggestions how to make it faster?
Hi Everyone,
Just thought I'd ask people - my 17" iMac G5 1.9GHz PowerPC with 512MB ram is painfully slow at start-up. Seems to take forever! Does anyone know how I could clear a lot of rubbish from my computer and someone make it faster.
Would anyone recommend a complete re-install - would that improve speed?
Any help appreciated, cheers,
MarkMark, you can clear space on your drive and speed it up by moving a lot of sound and video files to a DVD, or even better, to an external; Firewire drive that you can partition and also use as a clone boot disk.
Go through your applications folder and look for stuff that you never use, then get AppZapper to remove all traces of them. You can also use Monolingual to remove the tons of extra languages installed with Word and OS X, just make sure you uncheck English and any other language you might use.
Hope some of this helps,

Macbook Air internet connection painfully slow with ethernet.....
Hi all
I am currently staying in a serviced apartment and have a Macbook Air that I have had to connect to the in-house LAN through the USB port (someone on here was kind enough to suggest this - I'm a bit of beginner at all this!). The connection is painfully slow (it claims to be connected but pages in safari don't load, iTunes won't load etc.), but the ancient IBM pc on Windows XP conencts through the same at a good speed.
I am also in a wifi environment but my Macbook Air doesn't connect to anything - it keeps timing out (even when it can recognise several unsecured networks). Can anyone advise?
Message was edited by: kaythomsonMine is slow too! The Charter tech was here for four hours today, redoing the entire building. Every other Mac and PC here are up to speed. The new Mac Pro Octo has never been up to speed. I really don't have time to put hours into what I suspect will be a dead end. Apple needs to look into this and help us out.

Internet very, very slow! Any tips?
All online applications have been running pretty slow for quite some time. Then two nights ago, I accidentally unpugged the power strip, and ever since then it has been EXTREMELY slow, taking at least a couple minutes to load many pages...especially logins or sending messages. In the iTunes music store, it has been taking me around 2 minutes to get from one page to the next!! A lot of times it times out...
I'm not a computer person at all, but it seems like there must be some way to help this. Hopefully I haven't ruined my computer by unplugging it! If anyone has any tips on how to get things running again, please help me!!
Thanks!
Ashley
P.S. I have a lot (about 2,500) songs in my iTunes library. Does that make a huge difference?

Script Editor in Snow Leopard painfully slow after adding apps to Library
I have four different Macs that I use from time to time, and on each of them I notice a constant: adding more items to AppleScript Editor's Library window slows performance of mundane operations (opening a dictionary, switching between Library window and editor window, scrolling in the Library window, etc).
In Leopard, I noticed little to know latency in opening a dictionary in Script Editor, but Snow Leopard's AppleScript Editor kills my productivity by making me wait on it with most UI interactions with the Library window.Hello
I read another post of yours:
Topic : Issue with applescript and installer scripts
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2143147
It seems that the installer is calling osascript which is run in 64-bit mode under OSX 10.6 whereas XSLT Tools.osax invoked in the script is in 32-bit mode only.
Until the osax becomes 64-bit capable, you may try setting /usr/bin/osascript to run in 32-bit mode. Perhaps by setting an option in Get Info window in Finder as explained in the AppleScript Release Notes listed earlier. (?)
I'm not sure but if Finder cannot do it for commands, you'd need to replace 'osascript' with 'arch -i386 osascript' in the installer script (if it's editable) or let /usr/bin/osascript be wrapped via arch(1) so that it is run in 32-bit mode.
cf.

Good luck,

I was downloading a TV episode in Itunes when it froze. The download was not completed. I had to use the emergency shut down processes and then restart my Imac. Everything now takes 2 to 3 minutes to open up. I have access to all my applications,as far as I know, but everything including my internet is painfully slow. Almost like itues is still running in the background or something.
Go to user>Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor and check to see what applications are using all your memory. You can quit the offending app in Activity Monitor - please let us know what happens,

Installation of Yosemite 10.10.1 has severely slowed performance of my Mac Mini. Tales a long time to start, and a very long time to start any apps.
Open Activity Monitor and kill this process - rapportd.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Alternatively, see:
Reinstall OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Choose the version you have installed now:
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X

Painfully slow internet after upgrading to Snow Leopard
hi all, i recently upgraded to Slow leopard.
My internet has soon become painfully slow, taking (literally) minutes to load pages. I have checked my modem & router, they seem to be fine as my iPhone & Vista laptop run perfectly on the same network.
does anybody know what this could be?If you have not done so since upgrading to Snow Leopard, you should run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk Permissions+.
Have you used Software Update to apply Apple's latest updates after upgrading to Snow Leopard. If there are updates, you should run it a second time to ensure there were no dependent updates.
As a test, you can create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Try the things that caused the problems. Is it fast in the new account, or is it the same? If it is fast, then the cause is likely to be in your normal user account. If it is the same, then the cause is likely to be with the overall system (the OS).
You can also try doing a Safe Mode startup
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
This will do some maintenance during startup and also load only Apple's essential system extensions and processes. Any third party software you have installed will not automatically run. Check the performance while in safe mode, and if there is improvement, restart normally to see if the problem comes back or not. -
I am connected to my usual wifi and when I try to go onto any app's which require Internet connection, it says I have no Internet connection yet I am connected to wifi, how do I resolve this?I have had this problem for about a week.
Any responses are appriciatedYou posted in the iPad forum, but you profile lists an iPhone 4S. Does your iPhone or iPad have this problem.
Here's some iPad suggestions. Most also apply to the iPhone. Your iPhone or iPad may show the wifi symbol but that only shows the presence of a wifi signal. Not that you are connected.
Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
• Launch Settings app
• Tap on Wi-Fi
• Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.
Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim

If any of the above solutions work, please post back what solved your problem. It will help others with the same problem.

PAINFULLY SLOW launch times with MS Office 2004 Apps?
Anyone else noticing painfully slow launch times with their MS Office 2004 Apps? It seems that each time I restart my machine and try to open any kind of office document the Word icon will bounce at least 15 times and then it takes forever for the application to actually launch. Once launched it seems fast and works fine, but not on initial launch after restart.
Is this a Rosetta issue? Should I reinstall the MS Office apps?
-JBSeems ok to me. Did you download the latest update which finally allows spotlight to search in Entourage and provide other improvements?
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/download/ office2004/Office2004_11.2.3.xml&secid=4&ssid=29&flgnosysreq=True
"Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.2.3 Update

This update also includes all of the improvements released in all previous Office 2004 updates.
Applies to: Microsoft Office 2004 Standard Edition, Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition, Office 2004 Professional Edition, Entourage 2004.
Released: March 14, 2006" -
Why can't I update or load new apps on my iPhone and iPad. It does not ask me for my password. I tried to sync from my laptop now I am unable to connect to any sites from internet explorer. When I try to update or load any app it tells me it is corrupt
You need to ask Apple for assistance with getting back into your old ID. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to resolve this issue through the Account Security team, fill out and submit this form.

My phone is so slow won't download any apps and data is not working correctly
I have the moto e with straight talk
Hi
This is not a Firefox thing, but there are some general housekeeping activities you can do to make your telephone run much easier.
First of all, uninstall any apps and widgets you do not need. It is amazing how they can clutter up your phone! In the app drawer, long press on an app or widget and drag it to the uninstall option at the top of the screen.
So you have a sizeable SD card in your phone? If so, in Settings app , scroll down to Storage and tap "Move media". As it says on the menu, this will move your media files to your memory card, thus freeing up space on your phone.
Before you leave Storage, scroll up a little and tap on "Cached Data" and selected to clear the cached data.
In Settings>Apps, scroll across to "On SD Card" and tick a few boxes to move some of your apps to your memory card. (Note: With some apps, this may mean that any accompanying widgets will not work, this is a bug with Android).
Once finished, turn off your phone and turn it back on again and you should find your phone has quite a bit more space and is running a bit quicker. -
I have a mini mac with 8GB ram and running yosemite OS.
