Introduction of Oracle Table Partitions into PeopleSoft HRMS environment

I would like to pose a general question and see if anyone has found any published advice / suggestions from PeopleSoft or Oracle on this. I believe that Oracle table partitioning isn't supported through the PeopleTools application designer functionality. Most likely this is done for platform independence. However, we were thinking about implementing table partitioning for performance and the ability to refresh test instances with subsets worth of data instead of the entire database.
I know that this would be a substantial effort, but was wondering if anyone had any documentation on this type of implemention. I've read some articles from David Kurtz on the subject, and it sounds like these were all custom jobs for each individual client. Was looking for something more generic on this practice from PeopleSoft or Oracle...
Regards,
Jay

Thanks for the article Nicolas. I will add that to my collection, good reference piece.
I think you gasped the gist of the query, which was I know that putting partitioning into a PeopleSoft application is going to be highly specific to the client and application that you are running. But what I looking for was something like a baseline guide for implementing partitioning in a PeopleSoft application as a whole.
In other words, something like notifiaction that the application designer panels would be affected since they don't have the ability to manage partitions. Therefore, any changes to tables that would utilize partitioning would need to be maintained at the database level and no longer utilize the DDL generated from PeopleTools Application Designer. Other consideration would be, like maybe a list of tables that would be candidates for partitioning based on the application, in my case HRMS. And maybe, suggestions on what column should be used for partitioning, etc...All of which are touched on in your identified article about putting partitioning in at the database level for a generic application.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated...

  • Oracle Tables Partitioning

I am planning for table partitioning of existing tables...
database is production 10gR1 i need it to upgrade to 11gR2 and also implement table partitioning. what should be the best way to do so with minimum downtime and zero data loss. Please advice. size of the tables are 20 to 40GB.. source database is in solaris and planning to migrate on linux.

my question is for partitioning with minimum downtime with zero data loss.
    the scenario is like
I took a export of source table and create a new partitioned table with different name, then import the data into new table, drop the source table and rename the new partitioned table with the source tables's name. Its all fine because there will be very minimum downtime but here we will loss some data. It is because the transactions which are done in the mean time will not be in the exported file. Is there any way another..? I hope you got my question.

  • Oracles table Partitions

I have to create an app that front ends a database of network
events. Users access this by time parameters. I take those
parameters and determine the correct oracle partition to go to (for
query speed purposes)., There are about 20 million rows in this
database. I cant do anything without being able to specify
partition. CF does not seem to work with the following:
    select *
    from reporting_db partition (p200901)
It does not seem to recognize "partition" as a keyword. And I
need it to recognize the entire "partition (p200901)" as valid
oracle sql. What am I missing?

Well I guess I'm too tired or something. Its working now. It
was not working from the flex cf wizard query dialog. But maybe I'm
just working to many hours and it would have worked there too. Oh
    well.

  • PeopleSoft HRMS w/ Oracle 8i database

I would like to know the following from any DBAs out there:
We are using PeopleSoft HRMS 7.5 with Oracle 8i on Sun Solaris
    2.6. We have a 3 tier architecture.
My questions are regarding user authentication. In yur shops are
the users authenticated at the database level also. Iunderstand
that with PeopleSoft's architecture only dummy accounts are
created in Oracle, by which you connect and disconnect to the
database. I am not sure I understand this.
Also is the OPS$ORacle account used widely. You can only use this
account if you are logged on the ORacle UNIX account. How risky
is not disabling this account if you have turned off remote
    authentication.
    Thanks

    Hi,
sorry, I can't see your detailled questions. I'll try some answers:
    PeopleSoft/3-Tier/Oracle-dummy-user:
When you login into PeopleSoft application, you have an account
with username, password. Within the PS application you have
role(s) and fine granulated rights to do or not to do, e.g. open
panels, change data, create/change/delete other accounts and so
on. The roles and rights are all managed within the PeopleSoft
    application. All informations concerning roles/rights/accounts...
are stored in the database, but managed by the PS application.
The PS middle-tier (application server) makes and holds
connections to the underlying database only by one or two
database user accounts (people and sysadm). These user(s) have
rights on all PS tables a.s.o.
    OPS$ account:
As far as I know, when using OPS$ account but remote
authentication turned off, the only "risk" is that a user with
the corresponding server account (OPS$test => unix login "test")
can login without further password into the Oracle database.
    Hope this helps,
    Thomas.

  • Use of Logical Partition in a Oracle Table...

What is the use of Logical Partition in a Oracle Table as Target.  Techincal Manual does not say any significance.
    My question is:
If the Table has no partitions and if we add Logical Partitions using Data Service, what purpose will it serve?
We are planning to load 30 Million records a day into a Oracle Table. As of now the Target table has no partition and we are planning to have that soon. Is there a better way to load the data into Target Table, using Partition, Bulk Loading(API), Degree of Parallelism, etc., We have not dealt data of that volume, inputs are highly appreciated.
    Regards.
    Santosh.

    Initial Value:
Indicator that NOT NULL is forced for this field
    Use
Select this flag if a field to be inserted in the database is to be filled with initial values. The initial value used depends on the data type of the field.
Please note that fields in the database for which the this flag is not set can also be filled with initial values.
When you create a table, all fields of the table can be defined as NOT NULL and filled with an initial value. The same applies when converting the table. Only when new fields are added or inserted, are these filled with initial values. An exception is key fields. These are always filled automatically with initial values.
    Restrictions and notes:
The initial value cannot be set for fields of data types LCHR, LRAW, and RAW. If the field length is greater than 32, the initial flag cannot be set for fields of data type NUMC.
If a new field is inserted in the table and the initial flag is set, the complete table is scanned on activation and an UPDATE is made to the new field. This can be very time-consuming.
If the initial flag is set for an included structure, this means that the attributes from the structure are transferred. That is, exactly those fields which are marked as initial in the definition have this attribute in the table as well.
    hope it helps,
    Saipriya

  • Possible to swap multiple partitions into a table?

    Hi,
We are using partition exchnage to swap individual partitions into table which then backed up.
This being done one partition at a time.
Is it possible to swap several partitions of a tabel in one go.
    using Oracle 11.2.0.3
partioned by date, one partition of reach day.
Is it possible say to move the last 7 days partitions into the other table for backup using partition exchange?
    Thanks

    >
    No.
If the goal is to back up the data why not just use expdp to export the data for all seven partitions at once? Then drop the partitions.
If you only use one regular table for the exchange you would have to start with an empty table, swap one partition, backup the table, truncate the table, swap the next partition and so on.
Or you could create a table with seven empty partitions and swap the 7 partitions one at a time and then backup the new partitioned table.
Or you could create seven tables and swap each one with a partition and then backup all seven tables.
    Too many choices.

  • Best Practice to fetch SQL Server data and Insert into Oracle Tables

    Hello,
I want to read sqlserver data everry half an hour and write into oracle tables ( in two different databases). What is the best practice for doing this?
We do not have any database dblinks from oracle to sqlserver and vice versa.
    Any help is highly appreciable?
    Thanks

    Well, that's easy:
use a TimerTask to do the following every half an hour:
    - open a connection to sql server
    - open two connections to the oracle databases
    - for each row you read from the sql server, do the inserts into the oracle databases
    - commit
    - close all connections

Also what things do I need to take into account when I export a xlsx file to csv file. I mean I hope in no circumstances there would be a data loss. How about instead of of these "what ifs" and "I hopes" you tell us exactly what you have to work with and describe the real business problem. If you ask the wrong questions, you get the wrong answers.
You "hope" that there would be no data loss? Do you really think Excel would survive as a product, much less be the overwhelming dominant product of its type, if it screwed up something that fundamental? The only thing that will be lost is the formatting meta-data.

  • XML data into Oracle Tables. XML file on Application Server.Oracle Apps R12

    Hi All,
    My Database version : 11.2.0.2.0
I have an XML file which needs to be loaded into the Database Tables. How ever i do not want to use the XMLTYPE as given below
    insert into test1 (
SELECT PrcDate, PmtType, PmtStatus, PmtTypeCount, PmtTypeAmt
    FROM XMLTABLE(
    '/WFPaymentAck/RejectedDom1ACH'
    PASSING XMLTYPE( BFILENAME('ECX_UTL_LOG_DIR_OBJ','wf_test_xml.XML'), NLS_CHARSET_ID('UTF8') )
    COLUMNS
    PrcDate VARCHAR2(2000) PATH '@PrcDate' ,
    PmtType VARCHAR2(2000) PATH '@PmtType' ,
    PmtStatus VARCHAR2(100) PATH '@PmtStatus' ,
    PmtTypeCount VARCHAR2(100) PATH 'PmtTypeCount' ,
    PmtTypeAmt VARCHAR2(100) PATH 'PmtTypeAmt'
Because this way the XML file needs to reside on the DB server.
I am looking into other option of loading the XML file into a CLOB column of a table and reading it from that column.
I did a couple of tests and feel that this way also the XML file has to reside on the Database Server itself. I am not sure if this is correct or if there is any problem with our TEST instance.
++Can anyone let me know if i need to have the XML file on the DB server instead of the Application server to load into a CLOB column of table ??++
    ++Or++
++Is there any other workaround for me to load XML into Oracle Tables, while having the XML file on Application Server.++

    1) Are you asking me to create a folder on Database directory which points to a folder on the Apps server ?I suggest creating an Oracle directory object (a database object) pointing to a real location (folder) on Application server.
we DONOT want a hand shake between the DB Server and the APPS server.I don't see where the problem is.
I'm not familiar with Apps R12 but there's no doubt the two servers are already communicating, at least App server should be able to access the DB for the whole thing to run.
    As I said :
One way or another, the data has to make its way to the database, there's no workaround to that. How do you imagine the data will end up in a database table if it doesn't come to the DB server?
There's no magical method out there, both servers have to communicate at some point.
About client-server approaches (client being here the App server), you can read about accessing the XML DB repository in the XML DB Developer's Guide : http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e23094/toc.htm
Other option : SQL*Loader can load a CLOB, or an XMLType column too
