Use of Logical Partition in a Oracle Table...
What is the use of Logical Partition in a Oracle Table as Target. Techincal Manual does not say any significance.
My question is:
If the Table has no partitions and if we add Logical Partitions using Data Service, what purpose will it serve?
We are planning to load 30 Million records a day into a Oracle Table. As of now the Target table has no partition and we are planning to have that soon. Is there a better way to load the data into Target Table, using Partition, Bulk Loading(API), Degree of Parallelism, etc., We have not dealt data of that volume, inputs are highly appreciated.
Regards.
Santosh.
Initial Value:
Indicator that NOT NULL is forced for this field
Use
Select this flag if a field to be inserted in the database is to be filled with initial values. The initial value used depends on the data type of the field.
Please note that fields in the database for which the this flag is not set can also be filled with initial values.
When you create a table, all fields of the table can be defined as NOT NULL and filled with an initial value. The same applies when converting the table. Only when new fields are added or inserted, are these filled with initial values. An exception is key fields. These are always filled automatically with initial values.
Restrictions and notes:
The initial value cannot be set for fields of data types LCHR, LRAW, and RAW. If the field length is greater than 32, the initial flag cannot be set for fields of data type NUMC.
If a new field is inserted in the table and the initial flag is set, the complete table is scanned on activation and an UPDATE is made to the new field. This can be very time-consuming.
If the initial flag is set for an included structure, this means that the attributes from the structure are transferred. That is, exactly those fields which are marked as initial in the definition have this attribute in the table as well.
hope it helps,

Edited by: DBS on Feb 9, 2012 10:21 PMHi,
I found the problem.It was because of the connection string.The format was different for oracle tables.
PFB the format
*cnss.open"Provider=OraOLEDB.Oracle.1;Data Source= servername:port/SID;Database= DB;User Id=aaaa;Password=aaaa;"*
And thanks *SH* for quick response.
So closing the thread......

Using one logical partition for / and /boot
Hi
on my pc i have windows and a linux. i want to install Arch and have all of them. there are some windows (ntfs) partition on my hard disk, a swap area and 2 linux partition that one of them is used by ubuntu (/boot, / , /home .....of ubuntu are in one partition which is ext4). is it possible to use the same method for Arch? i mean , i do not want to have a seperate /boot partition for Arch. is it possible? if yes, what is the recommended file system for that partition? can i use ext4? (some distroes do not support booting from an ext4.)
RegardsYou can use one partition for arch, with no separate /boot, and arch can boot from ext4.

I am trying to create a sequence to be use as primary key in a Oracle table
Hi guys
I have the ODI version 10.3.5 and I am trying to create a sequence that populates de row_id for a table. The schema is a database.
And I want that this item will be the primary key of the table that is loaded at execute the interface however I'm getting issues.
So please advise me.Hi ,
Can you please provide the following details :
1. What is the execution area of your sequence ? Is it source or staging or Target.
2. What IKM you are using ( I hope you are executing sequence in Staging or Target ) ?
My understanding is when you check Not Null , all your rows are going to Error table. So it is not giving any error.
When you uncheck the Not Null , it is giving error because Database is not allowing Null values in the Primary Key Column.
You can do the following to check if your sequence is working properly.
Try to write a Insert Select query in DB and execute it and see if it is working properly.
i.e.
insert into EMPL (
EMPNO,
ENAME,
JOB,
MGR,
HIREDATE,
SAL,
COMM,
DEPTNO
select S_EMPNO.NEXTVAL,
ENAME,
JOB,
MGR,
HIREDATE,
SAL,
COMM,
DEPTNO
from EMP
or if you can provide your query in this format , it will help in finding the issue quickly.Also provide the KM details. -

HOW TO USE SUBSTR IN PARTITIONING
HEY ALL,
CAN I USE SUBSTR IN PARTITIONING
LIKE DIS
create table test
process_id number(19),
name varchar2(15))
partition by range(process_id)
partition p1 values less than (substr(process_oid,-1))
tablespace test,
partition p2 values less than (substr(process_oid,-1))
tablespace test,
partition p3 values less than (maxvalue)
tablespace test
)No. You cannot use like that.
Why don't you run your CREATE statement and check it for yourself. You will get the below error
ORA-14019: partition bound element must be one of: string, datetime or interval
literal, number, or MAXVALUE -

How to load data from oracle table to XML using ODI ?
Hello Team
I am trying to load data from an oracle table to an xml file. I have configured the physical and the logical schemas for the same. I have used SQL to SQL as LKM and SQL to SQL Append as IKM with Sunopsis Memory Engine as staging area.
After this, when I am executing the interface, it is executed without any errors but to my surprise I am not finding the relevant data in the xml file. What could be the reason ?
Please look into this and lemme know how to solve it.
Thanks.908458 wrote:
Hello Phanikanth
Even IKM SQL Control Append is not solving the problem. There are many " order columns" in the target xml table. I have not mapped them or specified any order. Does the problem persist because of this ?

How to choose the partition in oracle tables?
Dear all,
i m in need to create the partitions on prod.db tables since i m not aware of creating partitions?i just go through some theroy concepts and understood the range and list partitions (i.e)Range is normally used for values less than like jan,feb,march or values less than 50,000 values less than 1,00,000 like that each partition is having separate tablespaces to increase the performance. and for list is used to denoting the directions like west,east,north,south like that.
Now what i want to know is ?
1.)when will i can go ahead with partitions?
2.)before creating partitions is it advise to create index or not needed?
3.)if i started to create partition what is the leading column have to create partition and which partition has to choose?
pls let me know and pardon me if i did any mistakes.
thanks in advance..I had to research on same topic. One of my teammates suggested few points that might help you also.
Advantages of partitioning:
1) Partitioning enables data management operations such data loads, index creation and rebuilding, and backup/recovery at the partition level, rather than on the entire table. This results in significantly reduced times for these operations.
2) Partitioning improves query performance. In some cases, the results of a query can be achieved by accessing a subset of partitions, rather than the entire table. Parallel queries/DML and Partition-wise Joins are also got benefited much.
3) Partitioning increases the availability of mission-critical databases if critical tables and indexes are divided into partitions to reduce the maintenance windows, recovery times, and impact of failures. (Each partition can have separate physical attributes such as pctfree, pctused, and tablespaces.)
Partitioning can be implemented without requiring any modifications to your applications. For example, you could convert a nonpartitioned table to a partitioned table without needing to modify any of the SELECT statements or DML statements which access that table. You do not need to rewrite your application code to take advantage of partitioning.
Disadvantages of partitioning:-
1) Advantages of partition nullified when you use bind variables.
Additional administration tasks to manage partitions viz. If situation arises for rebuilding of index then rebuilding should to be done for each individual partition.
2) Need more space to implement partitioning objects.
3) More time for some tasks, such as create non-partitioning indexes, collection of “global" statistics (dbms_stat’s granularity parameter to be set to GLOBAL. if sub partition are used then we have to set it to ALL).
4) Partition would implies a modification (of explain plan) for ALL the queries against the partitioned tables. So, if some queries use the choosing partition key and may greatly improve, some other queries not use the partition key and are dramatically bad impact by the partitioning.
5) To get the full advantage of partitioning (partition pruning, partition-wise joins, and so on), you must use the Cost Based Optimizer (CBO). If you use the RBO, and a table in the query is partitioned, Oracle kicks in the CBO while optimizing it. But because the statistics are not present, the CBO makes up the statistics, and this could lead to severely expensive optimization plans and extremely poor performance.

Introduction of Oracle Table Partitions into PeopleSoft HRMS environment
I would like to pose a general question and see if anyone has found any published advice / suggestions from PeopleSoft or Oracle on this. I believe that Oracle table partitioning isn't supported through the PeopleTools application designer functionality. Most likely this is done for platform independence. However, we were thinking about implementing table partitioning for performance and the ability to refresh test instances with subsets worth of data instead of the entire database.
I know that this would be a substantial effort, but was wondering if anyone had any documentation on this type of implemention. I've read some articles from David Kurtz on the subject, and it sounds like these were all custom jobs for each individual client. Was looking for something more generic on this practice from PeopleSoft or Oracle...
Regards,
JayThanks for the article Nicolas. I will add that to my collection, good reference piece.
I think you gasped the gist of the query, which was I know that putting partitioning into a PeopleSoft application is going to be highly specific to the client and application that you are running. But what I looking for was something like a baseline guide for implementing partitioning in a PeopleSoft application as a whole.
In other words, something like notifiaction that the application designer panels would be affected since they don't have the ability to manage partitions. Therefore, any changes to tables that would utilize partitioning would need to be maintained at the database level and no longer utilize the DDL generated from PeopleTools Application Designer. Other consideration would be, like maybe a list of tables that would be candidates for partitioning based on the application, in my case HRMS. And maybe, suggestions on what column should be used for partitioning, etc...All of which are touched on in your identified article about putting partitioning in at the database level for a generic application.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated...

Logical type Partition of an existing table
Dear All,
My database is 10gR2 and Linux is the operating system.
One of my table in production database is huge and contains lot of data. Table is growing on daily basis. There are many queries that users execute on this table and the criteria of selection is normally entry date of the record, its a field Entrty_Date with date datatype.
I want logical partition on this table in such a way, that the table name remains the same, and data is partitioned logically.
Like if the Entry_Date is starting from 2005, a partition is made on the criteria:
2005-2006
2006-2007
2011When user query for records having entry date > 2011... the query is made only this chunk of the table, making the query fast.
I hope I am able to make you understand my problem. If its possible in Oracle please let me know the name of the method and I will RND on this one. And I have to do it on existing table that contains lot of data.
Thanks,
ImranFor example:
CREATE TABLE sales
( prod_id NUMBER(6)
, cust_id NUMBER
, time_id DATE
, channel_id CHAR(1)
, promo_id NUMBER(6)
, quantity_sold NUMBER(3)
, amount_sold NUMBER(10,2)
PARTITION BY RANGE (time_id)
( PARTITION sales_q1_2006 VALUES LESS THAN (TO_DATE('01-APR-2006','dd-MON-yyyy')) TABLESPACE tsa
, PARTITION sales_q2_2006 VALUES LESS THAN (TO_DATE('01-JUL-2006','dd-MON-yyyy')) TABLESPACE tsb
, PARTITION sales_q3_2006 VALUES LESS THAN (TO_DATE('01-OCT-2006','dd-MON-yyyy')) TABLESPACE tsc

Display distinct rows from Oracle table without using "DISTINCT" keyword.
How to retrieve distinct rows from oracle table without using 'DISTINCT' keyword in SQL?
Thanks in advance.
MihirWelcome to the forum.
Besides GROUP BY you can use UNIQUE instead of DISTINCT as well, but that's probably not wanted here ;) , and the ROW_NUMBER() analytic:
SQL> create table t as
2 select 1 col1 from dual union all
3 select 1 from dual union all
4 select 2 from dual union all
5 select 3 from dual union all
6 select 4 from dual union all

How to use Oracle Table Type values in Select Statement.
Hi,
I am fetching initial set of values into Oracle Table of Records Type and want to use list of values in the Select statement.
For example, try something like the following:
TYPE t_record IS RECORD (
ID TABLEA.ID%type,
NO TABLEA.NO%type,
v_record t_record;
TYPE t_table IS TABLE OF v_record%TYPE;
v_table t_table;
-- Code to populate the values in v_table here.
SELEC ID,NO, BULK COLLECT INTO <some other table variabes here> FROM TABLEA
WHERE ID IN v_table(i).ID;
I want to know how to use the values from Oracle Table Type in the Select Statement.Something like this:
create or replace type t_record as object (
id number,
no number
CREATE or replace type t_table AS TABLE OF t_record;
set serveroutput on
declare
v_table t_table := t_table();
v_t1 t_table := t_table();
begin
v_table.extend(1);
v_table(1).ID := 1;
v_table(1).No := 10;
v_table.extend(1);
v_table(2).ID := 2;
v_table(2).ID := 20;
SELEC t_record (ID,NO) BULK COLLECT INTO v_t1
from TableA
FROM TABLEA
WHERE ID IN (select t.ID from table(v_Table) t);
for i in 1..v_t1.count loop
dbms_output.put_line(v_t1(i).ID);
dbms_output.put_line(v_t1(i).No);
end loop;
end;
/Untested!
