Invisible "Movie Clips" in Director

I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure
out how I would do the equivalent in Director:
In Flash I have a movie with 2 movie clips. 1 clip is a buch
of questions and depending on how you answer them an animation runs
in the other movie clip. To the end user, it looks like one screen
on the same background.
In Director how do I create a separate timeline
(questions/clickable answers) that effect another timeline
(response animations)? If I use MIAW they have a window boarder. I
would really like it if these 2 timelines were running on a base
timeline where other things do their thing when the quiz is over.
This would be the background with all the other buttons/links.
Possible, impossible, stick to Flash? HELP!

Wow, all of that sounds so much more complicated than 2 movie
clips on the stage in Flash. I would just create a Flash movie and
bring it into Director but here is the complication with that. The
response section has a musical score and a cursor that moves
accross the score with music that will play - well, actually that
isn't the response that is part of the listening portion of the
question that I want in the response area. So the user will be
instructed to listen to a section of music and follow along. When
the music stops playing he can slide the cursor back and forth to
see the music again if he needs to to answer the question that he
is now asked. If he answers wrong, the score will show him why he
isn't right. That is why there will be different responses to
different answers. Now all that coding for the moving cursor and
changing score has been done in director in another part of the
program where the student can listen to the entire piece and follow
along. I don't want to reinvent the wheel in Flash. I want to use
variations on the code that is written in Director.
So can I tell my Flash movie the plays in Director to move to
a mark on the Director timeline according to which Flash answer
they choose. This may be my easiest method.
OR I guess I could just use 2 Director movies. After question
10 change movies. I'm trying not to have a director score that's
1,500 frames. I would need to keep track of several variables
throughout the entire quiz. The more I think I have this solved,
the more I find I'm lost.

• Drop menus with mask and invisible movie clip

please see this navigation interface:
http://www.hearightnow/yogamater/
when the mouse is outside of the drop menus, the drop menus "hide" behind the outside of a mask, when the mouse enters the drop menus, they move up. An invisible movie clip the traces the frame of the photos is in place to insert ROLL_OVER and ROLL_OUT code to "block" the event listener that functions the "yoga" drop menu.
This is all done in one frame, the scripts do all the animation of the drop menus.
the current code for this menu allows the mouse to travel from the photos to the "yoga" drop menu without triggering the menu to go up, however if the mouse travels from the "yoga" drop menu to the photos, the drop menu locks up until the mouse leaves the photos.
any ideas how this can be fixed? also, how do I apply the script on the invisible clip to all the drop menus?
definitely a newbie to AS3 so all help is greatly appreciated!!

http://www.hearightnow.com/yogamater/menu_45b.fla
the "menu" layer contains the mask that the drop menus hide behind
the "invis" layer contains the invisible movie clip that has the code that removes and adds the event listeners that move the "yoga" drop menu
the photos seen at http://www.hearightnow.com/yogamater/ are added with HTML DIV tags.

• Rollover one invisible movie clip and make a different one visible and the reverse

This is a very simple thing I want to do: show informational popups when an area of the screen is rolled over. I was able to get this working in action script 3 with MouseEventListener and the visible =true/false property but can't seem to get it working correctly in AS2. I need AS2 for backward compatability with Captivate.

You can use true/false in AS2, but 0/1 should work as well.
THe way you have it, it can't go invisible...
You set the object invisible with the first line, but then make it visible again later on, so one of them, I suspect the latter needs to go.
Also, in your rollout function you have a typo. You are missing a "." before _visible...
companyTxt_visible = 0;    // typo
companyTxt._visible = 0;   // no typo

• Basic invisible button movie clip frame actions not working, pls. help!

Hi,
I've got a basic little slide show player which is timeline-based, rolling through 5 images with alpha transitions, and on the topmost layer, I have 5 invisible movie clips which have actions applied to them as follows:
on (press) {
gotoAndPlay(21);
This action should allow for the on click button to navigate to that specific frame, or image, but for some reason it is not working.
Did I do something wrong? I feel like I've done this before but I'm rusty with Flash since I don't use it all the time.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Sean

The invisible movie clip is something I know I've done over the years on many occasions - I'm not sure I'm understanding your alternate technique, can you explain it better? The way my movie clips are invisible is just by setting the alpha to zero in the properties for the movie clip instance (clicking on the object on stage, then setting it in properties)..
Also, the actions are on the invisible movie clips (buttons) and not the timeline.
Cheers,Sean

• Movie clips: 'visible' vs 'stop' as far as Fla performance

Hi All,
I would like to know if I should stop a FLV from playing as well as make it invisible (MC.visible = false) as a 'best practice.' Does an invisible movie clip -that was not stopped- cost more as far as cpu performance than a movie clip that was both stopped and made invisible?
Thanks

Not sure I understand your terminology (I'm new to AC3):
I have an externally-linked FLV that plays inside a FLVPlayback component that exists inside a movie clip. In the timeline of that movie clip I have a framescript. That framescript includes the following: a global index variable (which increments), an addEventListener (that calls), a function (which calls) and another function. <==These are all located in that movie cllip's framescript.
That movie clip is then dropped onto the main timeline's stage. Then, in the main timeline's framescript, I put an addEventListener on a Tween of that movieClip (so I can tell when it's done scaling the movie clip's size). I also have a global variable that holds a reference to that movie clip in that main timeline's framescript.
Which of the above should I remove?
Also: If the User will always be able to replay that movie clip at will (any time during the 'show'), should I still remove the addEventListeners, etc. when the movie clip plays for the first time?
Thanks

• Attach movie clip + INVISIBLE

hey,
is there a way to attach a movie clip and make the object
INVISIBLE (i.e. make the object's alpha 0 as it is attached).
here's the line of code to attach the clip:
holder.attachMovie("frame1", "frame1_mc", 20, {_x: 30, _y:
35});
-donkeyboy

you can set any additional properties inside your brackets:
holder.attachMovie("frame1", "frame1_mc", 20, {_x: 30, _y:
35,_visible:false})
or
holder.attachMovie("frame1", "frame1_mc", 20, {_x: 30, _y:
35,_alpha:0})

• I've created a movie but at the end there is an invisible audio clip that keeps playing. How can I select it and delete it?

Hello everyone,
This is Karie Garnier in British Columbia, Canada.
I'm new to FCPX.
I've created a 20 minute movie, but at the end of the movie, there is an invisible audio clip that keeps playing.
How can a video clip be playing and making sounds, when it doesn't appear in the timeline? and ...
How can I select this invisible audio clip and delete it?

I think you could be right, that it's an old render file that's got stuck.
By the time I finished this movie my 500 GB hard drive was 99.9% full and
FCP started acting wierd, so I suspect you are right.
I have since upgraded my hard drive to one 1000 GBs but when I play the movie the
glitch remains.
Can you please tell me:
a) How can I fix the old render file so that it is no longer stuck? ... and
b) How do I take a screen shot of the timeline?

• Flash CS4- Movie clips suddenly invisible on stage? (Same file OK on other comps/CS5)

Flash CS4 had been working regularly on my Macbook Pro (Intel - Tiger) for a while, and then suddenly, I opened a file and all the movie clips went from being visible "stills" to invisible and represented only by an "o". I have tried settings, preferences, even uninstall/reinstall, but somehow my settings or something got messed up and I can't view movie clips on the stage.
I have tried a variety of different .fla files and none allow movie clips to be visible on the stage.The files were created in CS4.
This is true for movie clips that have 1 frame to many frames.
When I Publish or Test Movie, the clip is visible and normal, but it is impossible to edit the file without being able to see the movie clips.
I know that the issue is with my installation of Flash/settings being messed up, not with the file(s) because when opened on other computers (CS4 and CS5), movie clips are visible on the stage, as they should be.
Example below: In Flash CS4, the stage just has "o"s where I used to be able to see my movie clip, but in the Test Movie, everything is there. To be clear, I could see the movie clips in this exact file, and then the next time I opened it I could no longer see them.
I am hoping there is an obvious solution that I have overlooked. Help is appreciated in designer-friendly (non-developer) terms.
Thank you!

Hi,
Can you please try a few things for me? This will help us narrow down the issue.
Test 1: Switch from ActionScript 3.0 to ActionScript 2.0.
1. Open up the file where you see the "o" instead of your movieclips.
2. Go to File > Publish Settings.
3. Switch player target to ActionScript 2.0.
** Did your movieclips reappear or is it still showing "o"?
Test 2: Delete user configuration folder and recreate preferences files.
1. Quit Flash if it is running.
2. Delete the following 6 files:
Volume/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/FlashCS4
/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/Flash CS4 Preferences
/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/Flash 10 MRU
/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.flsh-10.0.plist
/User/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Flash CS4/
/Library/Application Support/Macromedia/FlashAuthor.cfg
3. Relaunch Flash and these files will be recreated.
** Did this solve your issue?
Please let me know. Thanks!

• Flash CS4 Link to a Movie Clip from inside another Movie Clip

I am working on a Flash CS4 project which has 5 buttons with 5 corresponding movie clips all on the main timeline. Everything in functional so far.
My problem is this: I want to be able to mouse click on a particular word in the text inside movie clip 4 ("mc4") and have it link to movie clip 3 ("mc3") (on the main timeline).
I've tried many things, and I can't get it working.
I have tried to highlight the word then link it to "mc3" in the properties panel where it says link (I successfully linked to an email address and to an outside website in other parts of the project)....
I tried to link it in the properties panel to "mc3", I tried & "parent.mc3", "root.mc3";
Linking it this ways seems to be the simplest, logical thing to do, but I don't know what kind of prefix it needs.
Then, I tried making the word (inside mc4) an invisible button (button6) then linking it to the mc3, with it's actionscript in the main timeline with the other button functions.
I tried duplicating mc3 and duplicating invisible button 3 and moving it's hotspot to over the word.
I tried putting a copy of mc3 and the button inside mc4, with the actionscript also inside mc4.
I tried duplicating mc3 and calling it mc6, and putting that inside mc4, with the actions back on the main timeline, and tried again with the actions inside mc4.
I tried with mc6 and invisible button 6 on the main timeline, but that doesn't seem possible.
I tried using this code from Adobe Actionscript 3.0:
button6.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, startMovie);
function startMovie(e:MouseEvent):void
this.play("mc6"); [and I also tried with "mc3"]
Nothing works!! Please, I would appreciate any suggestions!!
Thanks,
Suzanne

If I limit my attention to the second sentence of your posting, then I suggest the following (borrowing from the rest of your posting)...
If that invisible button6 is inside MC3 (on MC3's main timeline), atop the word you are trying to link to the movieclip, and you just want to make mc4 play by clicking that invisible button6, then assign the following code to the button6 inside MC3...
button6.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, startMovie);
function startMovie(e:MouseEvent):void
MovieClip(this.parent).MC4.play();
If I missed, then I missed following your explanation.

• Movie clip stops playing for no reason

I am making a banner that has multiple movie clips sharing the same area, creating different rainbow effects when different areas (invisible buttons) are moused over.
First of all I couldn't figure out if there was a way to have one invisible button over the whole area that changed to a different colored effect with each mouse over (first mouse over the black and whites would change to reds, second would change it to blues, third would change it to browns, etc.). Since I couldn't figure this out I settled on creating three buttons covering a third of the banner each, so when the mouse passes over one button it changes to reds, over another button it changes to blues, over the third it changes to browns.
The effects are movie clips where each frame has another stripe changing color so it goes in a wave effect from one to the next, and then goes back to white and black in the same manner. The first frame of each movie clip I had to turn into a nested movie clip so I could turn the alpha to 0, since I was going to have these color effect movie clips on top of one another in the main timeline on different layers, and so you could see the effect even if that color layer wasn't on top. I used the same nested movie clip with zero alpha for the first frame of each color effect clip (reds movie clip, blues movie clip, etc), so I dont' know if that's an issue.
Anyway, it seemed to work fine for a while, but after working on it for a while longer (and not getting any further since I removed most of the changes I made), now when I test the movie the mouse over does not seem to work correctly. It works fine, seemingly, for the first time I mouse over each button, but in order to have it work again I have to mouse over the button twice, and then it will pause randomly during a part of the clip and I have to move my mouse back over for the movie clip to continue.
I can't tell if this is because of the overlapping movie clips, or because my buttons are messed up, or if my actionscript is messed up, or if the timeline has to be longer, or what. Currently the timeline is 55 frames, the same as each movie clip.
I put a movieclip_instance.stop(); command in the first frame of the main timeline, is there a better way to do this? Should I put the stop command in the movie clip itself?
Here is a section of my AS in the main timeline, this is my first time programming ever, in any language, and trying to learn from the internet is more difficult than I thought it would be.
redmovie.stop();
red_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, playRed);
function playRed(event:MouseEvent):void
redmovie.play();

I am not sure of what the problem is, so I don't know if this will help or not. One thing I might suggest is that you use gotoAndPlay(1) instead of play(). That way, if your movieclip is in the middle of playing it won't continue but will start from the beginning.
You could use one button to have the different movieclips play in sequence if you prefer that. You would just need to have some form of counter that keeps track of which is the next to play. Somethin like...
var mcCounter:uint = 0; // start at 0 since an array is being used to identify which movieclip to play
var mcs:Array = new Array(redmovie, bluemovie, brownmovie);
only_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, playMC);
function playMC(event:MouseEvent):void
mcs[mcCounter].play(); // tell the current mc to play
mcCounter += 1; // increment for the next mc
if(mcCounter == 3) mcCounter = 0; // reset the counter if it exceeds the array

• How can you make movie clips partially visible?

Okay, so this sounds simple, but I'm tottally lost... I'm a thirteen year old boy that has been using Flash for a little over 3 years. I program video games. I recently embarked on a game where one of the modes is to be split screen, player one gets the top half, player 2 the bottom. The promblem with this is that my game is based off of a moving background, where inorder to keep the main character centered the background moves instead of them. Becsause of this,when setting up split screen, the screen on the upper layer takes over the bottom because there would be more showing then there would be in the game: Parts would be off screen. I was wondering if there was anyway that using hitTest(s) (or some other method) you could make a movie clip partially visible/ invisible. I know the code for making something invisible when touching something else. But I was wondering if there was a way to make only the part of the movie clip touching another movie (it would have its alpha turned off... let's say it's a hitBox) or only the part of the movie clip touching the hitBox visible, invisible. Another way of looking at this is that I want a movie clip to be a small box, but inside I want their to be a huge picture. I want to make it so that when you move the picture different parts are viewable in this little box. And to make this as clear as I can... : I want to make a circle that I'll call the magnifying glass. I want to make an invisible picture that can be moved using code (I know that part). I want it so that when part of the picture is under the magnifying glass it's visible, not the hole thing, jus that circular area. Another reason I'd like to have this promblem solved is for a moving water effect. I want to make a movie clip and tween showing a square of rushing water, but without putting anything over parts of it (other than a hitBox) I want to make only a squiggly line of that water box visible. Thank you so much! =D I really hope you guys know! =D P.S. I also am currently using the trial of CS4, if that helps anything. But if it's only possible in AS3, then it's impossible to me because I use AS2 conservatively.

Thanks... but I think you've misunderstood my question. I suppose magnifying glass wouldn't be the right word... I just wanted to explain that I want only the part of one mc touching another mc to be visible. I hope this isn't confusing. I have no need to enlarge an image. I want to make a movie clip only partially visible. Check out the fla.

• How do I get a movie clip to follow the cursor?

Hi guys,
What I want:
Is a simple action where I have my company logo in the middle of the screen and it follows the cursor (not over the whole screen but within invisible borders).
What I use:
I have Flash Pro CS5, code is Actionscript 3.0 and my company logo has been converted to a movie clip.
What didn't work:
So I watched 2 different tutorials on how to do this and both didn't work.
With the first one I used this code:
function gradientOver(event:MouseEvent):void{
logomc.visible=true;
function reportStageMouse(event:MouseEvent):void{
var myStageX:Number=Math.round(event.stageX);
var myStageY:Number=Math.round(event.stageY);
var xTween:Tween=new Tween(logomc,"x", Strong.easeOut, logomc.x, myStageX, 1, true);
var yTween:Tween=new Tween(logomc,"y", Strong.easeOut, logomc.y, myStageY, 1, true);
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE,reportStageMouse);
function gradientOut(event:MouseEvent):void{
logomc.visible=false;
function gradientClick(event:MouseEvent):void{
logomc.visible=false;
gradient.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER,gradientOver);
gradient.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT,gradientOut);
gradient.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,gradientClick);
And with the second one I had to make a border by drawing an oval shape, turn it into a movie clip and put my logo inside of it. Then I used this code:
stage.addEventListener("mouseMove", arjun);
function arjun(e:MouseEvent):void
var var1 = mouseY - followins.y;
var var2 = mouseX - followins.x;
var radiusR = Math.atan2(var1,var2);
var degreeR = radiusR / (Math.PI / 180);
followins.rotation = degreeR;

Thanks
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE, hideCursor);
function hideCursor(e:MouseEvent):void{
logomc.startDrag(true);
Mouse.hide(true);
so I used this code and it didn't work. I first try'd it on the main timeline and then inside the logo's own timeline and even inside the backgrounds own timeline.
no luck so far..

• I need to delete a variable containing a movie clip class and recreate it with a different movie clip class

Hello,
I am creating a program that is going to help students learn to read. In my project are pages of text with each word having a button that when pressed will display a movieclip presentation about that word (its pronounciation and spelling etc..). In the project I am working on now I have over 450 unique presentations of words to deal with. I don't want to have all of these hundreds of movie clips on the stage and tell them one at a time to stop and rewind and then have one play each time a word button is pressed. That seems to be very inefficient to me. So I want to do this with some code in Actionscript 3.
I know I can dynamically add movieclips to the stage using addChild(movieclipname) and remove them using removeChild(movieclipname) but there is a problem. I have hundreds of unique movieclips and I don't want to have to manage hundreds of variables containing the indivudual movieclip instancess. It is a real pain having to figure out what instance is still on the stage before i delete it.
In Adobe Director all I have to do is this:
on mousedown me
sprite(me.spritenum).member = member("somenewmember:)
end
and that was it
But if I do this in actionscript 3:
removeChild(some_mc)
some_mc still exists in memory. And I have to know exactly what variable it is to remove or else the movie will fail with an error. If I try to be brutish about it and try to implicitly remove all 450 movieclip instance variables from the stage I will get at least 449 errors.
What I want to do is this:
removeChild(some_mc)
some_mc = void //or //delete some_mc
var some_mc:MovieClip = new someother_mc();
addChild(some_mc)
but this doesn't work
How am I going to remove one of 450 movie clips and add a new totally different movie clip without the code knowing exactly what the last movie clip was? I suppose if could remove a child from the stage based on a string name then I could hold that name in a variable for later disposal.Can I do this?
Thanks for any help you can give me. I am new to actionscript.

Hey I think I may have a solution:
//begin code
var myMC:MovieClip = new ball();
var starMC:MovieClip = new star();
var youpresseeditMC:MovieClip = new youpresseedit();
starMC.name = "star";
myMC.name = "ball";
youpresseeditMC.name = "youpresseedit"
addChild(myMC);
box.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, replaceball);
press_BTN.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, replaceballwithtext);
function replaceball(event:MouseEvent):void {
trace(myMC.name)
removeChild(myMC);
myMC = starMC;
addChild(myMC);
trace(myMC.name)
function replaceballwithtext(event:MouseEvent):void {
trace(myMC.name)
removeChild(myMC);
myMC = youpresseeditMC;
addChild(myMC);
trace(myMC.name)
///end code
This works. I see the ball object replaced by the star and I am able to do this by manipulating just myMC. Is there anything I should be concerned with in this approach?
Thanks for your help

• Animated drop down buttons not working in movie clip

Hi,
I am working on this site: (AS2)
http://www.steamandclean.com/Index_w_1.html
I have two types of drop down menu. One under Commercial and one under Technical
The buttons are movie clips. The drop downs are also movie clips that start in frame 2 and are triggered on rollover.
The child buttons are buttons living on the drop down movie clips. They are set to getURL
As you see they are not willing to neither link to any url or will they run their move clip animation. One is a button and one is a movie clip.
The left movie clip has a mask, but it makes no difference if I remove the mask . It also has a emboss filter and no difference is I take that away either.
All of it is in one flash movie right now, but I will be splitting it up in a master navigation movie and individual swf's soon.
Right now I have the main movie, then the button MC then the dropdown MC and in the drop down MC I have placed either a animated (button) MC or a button. So it nested in nested in.......
In both cases I scripting the child buttons like this:
on (rollOver) {
gotoAndPlay(2);
on (rollOut) {
gotoAndPlay(6);
on (release) {
getURL("http://steamandclean.com");
I have also tried to use
_parent.getURL and _root.getURL in stead of just get URL, but it does not work.
The drop down buttons seem to be buried. In the left side the whole drop down panel seems to act like a link?
What am I doing wrong?
Can you help?

Hi Ned
Thank you for your reply again.
I figured it out.
Your reply prompted me to have my main button on rollover to go to a frame number on the main time line and then move the content of the drop down movie clip to that frame.
The drop down panel now work and the child buttons animation now work as well. I just had to find a way to make the drop down panel disappear on rollout. Since I could not script the actual drop down panel I created three skinny invisible buttons and placed them on the right, left and button of the drop down panel. I scripted them to go back to frame 1 on both rollover and rollout. Done.
See the result there:

(Left side only)
Thank you for your help.

• Button w/in movie clip not working

I know this question has been raised before and it usually
just boils down to using the frame #'s and labels. But, even with
that it is not working.
I have a map of the US and when each state is rolled over I
would like a menu to appear - this menu is a list with several
options and all of the options are buttons. I have it set up so
that each state is its own MovieClip and each has an invisible
button over it for the hit area and the menu to appear. (i didn't
want it to be simply when it rolls over the state movie clip
because the hit would be square, covering other states and causing
a mess of pop up menus)
Anyway, the menu pops up fine, but the buttons within do not
work. Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong? Thanks Much!!!!
wi_mc.stop(); // wi_mc is the state movie clip
wi_btn.onRollOver = function(){ //wi_btn is the invisible
button
wi_mc.gotoAndStop(15); //frame 15 is where my menu resides
wi_btn.useHandCursor = false;
wi_mc.onRollOut = function(){
wi_mc.gotoAndStop(1);

Alright, I've made adjustments to how I've got it all set up.
I've made the menu it's own swf file, (seeing as how I'm going to
have 48 of them in total I figured it was less messy to have each
as their own file). Anyways... here's the current problem and I'm
hoping someone has a good explaination for why this would be
happening...
on my main file I have 2 invisible buttons - 1 is calling the
movie to load when rolled over and the other is calling the movie
to unload when a roll-out occurs. RollOver works great - fully
functional menu shows up. Roll out, however, is having some issues.
The invisible button is in the same location of the menu, same size
etc. so that when the user rolls away from this the menu should
"unload".
For some reason it's acting as if the hit area for the roll
out is off. I did a trace to find out where it's saying the rollout
areas are and the first is actually when I roll onto it, then only
again when i roll out from the left side of the graphic. I've tried
deleting the button and creating a new one but the same thing is
happening.
Any ideas for a very confused person trying to complete this
simple task of unloading a swf via rollout? MUCH appreciated!!!!
this.createEmptyMovieClip("ExternalSWFHolder",
this.getNextHighestDepth());
var SWFLoader:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader();
wi_btn.onRollOver = function(){
SWFLoader.loadClip("wi_menu.swf", ExternalSWFHolder);
wi_rollout.onRollOut = function (){
SWFLoader.unloadClip(ExternalSWFHolder);
