Invisible program

I am writing a program that currently calls a shell program. This program doesn't need input from the user so I would not like the window to pop up. Is there anyway to run a program without showing the window?

If the program is yours, you can transform it to a dynamic library. If it is not you that create the program, you can try it to catch all the streams (Process.getOutputStream(), Process.getInputStream(), Process.getErrorStream()). I didn't try it but I think that the window will not pop up.

Launch and hide invisible program at startup

Hi,
I have been looking round various forums but cant find an answer. Hopefully someone can help.
Problem:
We have 20 computers that all need to run a program at login (Its a 3d render client). We need the program not to appear in the dock so I have edited the .plist file in the package contents thus making the program run without a dock or taskbar. However, the actual program window remains, allowing users to close the program.
What I need:
To open the program on startup, be invisible and hide itself.
I have tried a few scripts that launch it on startup. This works, but the next line doenst work to hide the program. I believe this is because the program is invisible (making it a background task) the finder command to hide or minimise has no effect.
I have also tried the simple procedure of adding it to startup items and checking "hide".
Any help would be most appreciated.

Its a client piece of software that allows 3d images from maxons cinema 4d to be rendered across a network. Under normal circumstances there would be no need to have this program running in the background or for it to be invisible to the dock. However. As everyone logs on in the morning this software starts on their machine. Their first instinct is to close it, which means that if I was to submit a job to the network it would not distribute it to the machines whose window has been closed. I want the software to start but be hidden so it cant be closed.
The only window that opens is a type of status/console window. So it would say what jobs are currently rendering or which have finished etc.

How to see if invisible program is running in background?

I'm trying to help my friend who has an iMac running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). Her email and Facebook keep getting "hacked", and even though she changes the passwords to long and complex things that nobody could ever guess, someone is still able to figure out her passwords. The only way we think this could be happening is if someone broke into her home and put some type of "keystroke capture" program so that they could look at it while she's at work and get her passwords that way. We simply can not come up with any other way that her passwors are being discovered, and unfortunately we think it's a jealous ex-wife that is doing this.
I seem to recall in Snow Leopard that there is a way to see what is running in order to see how much memory is being taken by each task or program on the computer, but I don't recall where to go on the computer to monitor that information. Can someone please point me to where that information is, and if you have any other advice on how to check to see if a program is running without her knowledge, I would sure appreciate any input.

How to make a program run in background?

Is there any ways to make an invisible program with java? a program that is running in background but the user cannot see it and it's not in the Start bar and the user cannot close it.

There are also 3rd party software that lets you install a java program as a service in winnt/2k/xp so that you can start/stop it from the service manager, doesnt even matter if the java program is gui based or not, as there are options (in win2k at least) in the service manager that allows the program to interact (think show gui) or not...one software called JNT comes to mind..
Anyway, if you're using win98/me equivalent, then just use javaw.exe like suggested by previous posters.

Restoring from the time machine

I back up regularly with the time machine. Some time back in late May or early June, I installed a program (for a USB wi-fi stick for use in China) which hi-jacked my air-port. though I trashed the program afterwards and other experts had offered advise how to restore the setting of the air-port, it didn't work, my air-port can no longer detect any network in the air. It appears that I have to reinstall my OS.
1. Can I re-sinstall just my OS and application to, let say, early May via the restore function of time machine while keeping the rest of the document data (in particular photo library) in my computer untouched and up to date. Or do I have to do a clean install with the OS DVD that comes with the computer.
2. If I reinstall the OS, will it keep the problematic internet (airport) setting or restore everything to default? that program hi-jacked my airport through assigning an IP address to my air-port such that my computer can no longer detect any existing network, (it appears that way). I hope through the restoring process, be it via the time machine or a clean install, that something (invisible program) which keeps assigning IP address to my airport is gone.
3. which is more appropriate (simple), time machine or clean install. I am not good at dealing with these sort of things, I am just another simple minded end user. Looking for precise, simple and easy to follow advise.
4. I hope that I do not have to reformat the HD and reinstall everything from scratch. That's going to kill me.

No, unfortunately. A full system restore is just that; everything.
However, what you can do is reinstall OSX and the default Apple apps from your Install disc; that won't disturb anything else. See: Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX.
Not sure you need to do either, though.

Have you tried resetting your Airport, per http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728? I'm far from a networking guru, but that might do it. If not, you might do better in the Airport forum, at https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/airport

A full restore from Time Machine is much easier, of course, but that' may not be what you want or need. See #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
If you know what's been changed since the date of the backup you restore, you could restore selected items from the latest backup, per #15 there. After this long, that sounds pretty tedious, though, and may not work well on complex apps.

Reverting back to 9.1.4?

Hello, a quickie: after having updated to Logic 9.1.5 and found out it's messing my Mac Pro up, I've been thinking about reverting back to Logic 9.1.4 - can I just drag it into my app folder from the backups or am I forced to do some package installing as well?
I'd _love_ to keep 9.1.5, but after encountering a lot of new bugs (or erroneous behaviour), it's no use. I'm now more certain than ever that there's something wrong with beta group. Option two: it's just my two Macs that are making me crazy. :-)
I'm using Mac Pro 8-core (last batch with Snow Leopard), OSX 10.6.8, Logic 9.1.5, UAD-2, MOTU PCI-based audio system.

Well, I've used 9.1.5 quite extensively since it was released and I've noticed the following:
workflow: cursors behave oddly in Arrange window, especially if coloring window is open, making it impossible to color objects sometimes
copying/pasting arrange blocks creates odd automation spikes, not only at the borders of the blocks, but inside the blocks as well
workflow: bluetooth mouse gets _very_ slow with larger projects, however, wireless touch pad (Apple) is not affected in any way
workflow: plugins sometimes don't accept value changes unless the plugin window is clicked first, very confusing for your workflow
automation: doesn't follow song pointer if playback is started via double-clicking the timeline (and sometimes playback doesn't even start although I double-click); sometimes adding an automation node (or moving the value line on Arrange) wakes it up again
AAF import is broken, regions get scrambled (and in Soundtrack Pro, for example, AAF import's very much ok)
AU Bridge is collapsing much too often; usually creating an endless stuttering effect before having to force quit, sometimes AU Bridge quits if my Mac just sits still
automation: bypassing an effect via clicking a timeline sometimes doesn't create a "bypass plugin" message, sometimes it's impossible to click the "zero" line to create a bypass, Logic insists on a value any other than zero
audio folder length refuses to be shortened beyond a certain value (usually 1 bar and 1 beat, 1.1.0.0) by dragging the right end, but for example, in event list you can punch in the value needed
EXS24 sometimes changes its preset (w/o any prg change commands or automation), sometimes with only insert bypass automation. When copied to another track (including the automation), the invisible program change is removed
lots of interrupts in playback, performance related - with just a few plugins and an 8 core Mac Pro with _lots_ of RAM? I had no issues whatsoever during 9.1.4, it only had the plugin internal timing bug… which was supposed to have been fixed in 9.1.5, but I just noticed that at least in some plugins there are still some serious timing issues (yes, I've got timing compensation on) - at least in offline bounces. And in realtime bounce my machine may (or may not) halt surprisingly, randomly.

Powerbook HD Failure... HELP PLEASE!

I've had a bad problem with my HD, here is the story:
I was on Safari & iTunes & Adium at the same time. For some reason, the music I was playing would go on and off, and I started getting the multicolored wheel. Sounded also like the drive was working hard... like there was an invisible program running (but there wasnt). I figured I would reboot, and the problem would stop.
So on the reboot, my powerbook became really really slow. The startup was really long (15mins)and I would say 20x the normal speed at which it usually worked. Opening the Finder window to run backup took like 5 mins. I tried backing up onto my Firewire disk, but it froze during unfortunately.
I ran the Install CD, used the disk utility and checked. The Verification failed and so did the repair. The SMART check also fails. My computer not cannot recognize the harddrive and I can only run through my firewire disk & CD. But I realized that through the portable hard drive, the system runs much faster than it originally did on my Hard Disk.
I never heard and strange sounds or ticks. The only thing I heard was that it sounded like my drive was working really hard. Or copying files, or fragmenting, etc.
What I'm most worried about is data recovery since I havnt done an update in a while. If this is a software related problem, will I lose my data? What could it be? Or is it a hardware related problem?

edit: I did a hardware test and there was an error detected. But the hard drive was actually scanning for the error.. so I guess the drive isnt DEAD.

I'm a little confused. You say that your computer will not detect the internal hard drive (and was showing all the symptoms of a failing/failed drive) and then a hardware test detected an error.
Finally you said "the hard drive was actually scanning for the error..." Can you clarify this? How is the hard drive able to 'scan for the error' if it cannot be recognised/booted? What are you using to do this particular scan?
Generally drive failures with the symptoms you describe will not be software related and ultimately the drive will need replacing. However it is quite possible for the drive to 'seemingly' be alright again for a period of time (this can be anything from a few days to, potentially, a few months) - but will then fail completely, and probably without any further warning.
Anyway, jumping a little further ahead, if you are going to attempt some form of data recovery yourself then the application you will need is Data Rescue as well as an external FireWire drive with plenty of free capacity for DR's temporary files whilst it is attempting to recover your data.
The demo on Prosoft's website will allow you to scan your drive but will only permit the recovery of one file per session. Hopefully this will be enough for you to gauge whether there's any hope of recovery (and if you need to purchase the full product).

Application outside screen!

I am a complete beginner, but Eagle 5.1 (from www.cadsoft.de), THE application I am dependent on is located outside the screen, meaning that it is visible from using Exposé. All I can do is Force quitting it, but it starts back at the same location again.

After starting and quitting Eagle, there is no new file in Preferences, but on the other hand I couldn't do anything from inside the invisible program so there should be no info to write back.
And about cmd-Q, well thanks, the first thing I wrote was that I was a complete newbie, the learning curve is rather steep and the manual supplied with the computer is not the fattest I've seen.
I did migrate from Windows to ubuntu Linux abt 18 months ago and that was also a lot of new things to learn, although it was rather straightforward. I suppose there will be a lot of sudo here in the Mac OS community before I get things going as I intend.
Compared to anything alse I've tried, the functionality integration between the OS and the computer is the best I ever saw so far.

Module Pool Programming - Radio Buttons & Screen Field Invisible or Display

I have 2 radio buttons in my screen and both of them are checked or on. Not sure how to make one of them is on and other is off at a time. If A is off, i need to make few screen fields invisible or display. if A is on, i need to make the screen field invisible or input enabled.
Can you please suggest me a suitable way to accomplish this task.

How can I programically make a top level VI panel invisible?

You can use VI Server's 'Close FP' method to close the front-panel. You will need a reference to that VI to invoke the method. One easy way is to launch the VI with the VI Server and hold on to its reference.
See the attached diagram -- the top-level.vi is launched and run, we wait for 5 seconds, and then close its front-panel.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

TCode IW42, Program SAPLCORU and SCreen 3360, Make Invisible (hide).

Hi,
In TCode IW42, on the overall confirmation screen there is a section Time Confirmation, this section of the screen should be invisible to all users. The Program Name (Subscreen) is SAPLCORU and Screen No is 3360.
How do I make this section invisible (hide) to all users?
Any help would be appreciated.

Program Data directory invisible?

Hope this is right forum. I have installed Win 7 and installed a game tonight and the shortcut on desktop says it is in c:\ProgramData\ directory except I can't find tht directory on my c:\ anywhere, it doesn't exist. Program Files directory does but the game I installed isn't hiding in ther either.
Is the Programdata directory hidden from view or am I just going crazy and it really is there and I just can't see it?
Hope someone can put me out of my misery. Thanks in advance.

Did some test and noticed :
When accounts are used a Directory name "Shared" is created under the main DATA directory / partition.
I moved the data from DATA to DATA/Shared and turned back accounts mode in Time capsule.
Now I have one user with readonly access and other with full access.
However I am not able to access the user direcroty which is outside DATA.
Anyways my data can be safe this way.

I can open the program and see it's running, but the window is invisible or too small to see.

I've tried scanning the help forums and was told that it's probably a corrupted file that saves my preferences upon closing, but all in the info I can find about this is for earlier releases.
I've tried clearing caches, opening images that might force the window larger, uninstalling and reinstalling, and restarting my computer. Suggestions?

You can use Save & Quit with one of these Startup settings:
* Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my home page" or "Show a blank page"
Save and Quit will only work if you close Firefox via "File > Quit" to close all open Firefox windows.<br />
If you use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox then restoring tabs from the last session ("Save & Quit" or "Show my windows and tabs from last time") doesn't work.
You can reset the warn prefs on the about:config page via the right-click context menu.

Invisible icons on DESKTOP

although i know for a fact that a certain file is on my desktop, since its listed in my Finder, i cannot drag/drop/copy/erase ANYTHING onto/from my desktop because it either goes back to its original folder or ends up in smoke "the poof cloud"... even a simple "screen capture" image which always go to the Desktop by default is INVISIBLE to the naked eye but exists on the Finder!
i think i made a keyboard shortcut action while trying to remember the screen capture and maybe ended up activating "invisibility" to my desktop, or something! its frustrating because i use a lot of my desktop area to copy/paste files, or eject a dvd, or install DMG programs so i googled and read a lot about possible "invisibility" function within a TERMINAL command but all i can manage to do is list my HD directories with the command "ls -a ~/Desktop" but i wont adventure further because a n00b like me is to afraid of recking my new mac!

Maybe I can clarify since im having the same issue. Whe I save a pdf or any other file to my desktop from safari the file does not show up visible on the desktop...... the file is there in the desktop folder but cant be seen. I can do a search for it in spotlight and it is there I can even drag it from the spotlight window to the desktop and it shows up. Have you tried a spotlight search. I would like to know if there is a fix for this as it becomes very tiresome to save the file somewhere else and then move it

Runtime.exec() - how to open new window for new program?

Hi,
I have searched through the forums but haven't found an answer to this one yet. I am using runtime.exec() to start up a new java program. At first I thought it wasn't running properly but, after checking task manager, I have discovered that the new program I open runs, it is just completely invisible to me. I am wondering how I can get the new program to run in a command window or something where I can monitor it.

Thank you all. After trying to figure out why the start command wouldn't work in the runtime.exec() call(not an executable - I am a dolt), I tried putting it in a batch file and it worked perfectly. Thanks for your help,
