IOS Data Protection

When setting an App ID for my DPS App in the iOS Developer account I have the choice to set Data Protection. Do I set this on or off and if on what level of Sharing and Permissions do I use?

Data Protection needs to be disabled. Sharing and Permissions will be greyed out, you don't need to select anything there.

AIR for iOS Data Protection question again

We are looking into Protecting Data Using On-Disk Encryption for our AIR for iOS iPad apps. An article on the adobe site (Protecting content on an iOS device with DPS | Adobe Developer Connection) mentioned this can be achieved by generating Data Protection enabled AppID/provisioning profile to pacakage in the app.
After we packaged and published the app using the appropriately configured provisioning profile (Complete protection), we run an analysis on the iPad files. It's reporting that the files are using an encryption class, but the wrong one.
We run into two kinds of scenarios -
1. For App ID that "complete" data protection service is specified, the class utilized should be NSFileProtectionComplete. Instead, the class being utilized in the files is NSFileProtectionCompleteUntilUserAuthentication
2. for App ID without any data protection service selected, the files saved in the app documentDirectory is utilizing "NSFileProtectionCompleteUntilUserAuthentication".
We cannot find why is it using the wrong class when specified with another class, and why are other apps utilizing the class when they weren't designed to any data protection? Could something in Adobe AIR be overriding it or setting a default to use "NSFileProtectionCompleteUnitlUserAuthentication"?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated. We cannot find much information on this issue but data encryption has become more and more critical now. Thank you very much.

Data Protection iOS 4 file encryption

Hi,
I need to ask a question about the "data protection" of iOS 4.0.
I'm developing an application that downloads files from a server. Then downloaded files, using iOS 4 data protection, I'm going to write them as protected (encrypted) using the method "writeToFile: options: error "( the options attribute is NSDataWritingFileProtectionComplete). I mean in a few lines of code can mark a file as readable and therefore not protected when the iPad is in blocking state:

In this situation I've secure files and they are stored in the file system.
At this point, when the device goes to block status, iPad protected file should not be accessible, because the files appears to be protected. My application can access the file only when the iPad is an unblock status.
The questions:
1) How do I read the file (from simulator), while the iPad is blocked, so as to realize that actually the file is protected and thus access to the file from my app is impossible? I think to implement a method to read the file only after the device (simulator iPad) is on block status, then implement a timer to start reading the file only when post-lock device.
2) The next phase of my work is to communicate to my application that the device iPad is going to go into a locked state and then all encrypted files are not available for reading and access. Doing so would take steps to avoid having to use the APP file while the device is faulty.
Reading the documentation iOS 4 I saw that there are two methods:
- applicationProtectedDataWillBecomeUnavailable
- applicationProtecedDataDisBecomeAvailable
At this point I should implement these two methods in the code to release resources so as to prevent the file my application to read the file if the device is locked.
How can I implement this code inside the methods?

I was able to fix the issue. I had to manually put the phone in restore mode by holding the power button and the home button until the power turned off while the phone was still plugged into the computer, then when the phone turned off continue holding the home button until you hear the computer recognize the device. Then navigate to the back up folder that is described earlier and cut out all of the back up folders and paste them on your desktop. Then iTunes said that a device was recognized in restore mode or something like that and you click yes to restore. After this happen the iPhone will go through the processes of restoring the phone. When it finishes it will start like a brand new device and it will be updated to the OS4.0. You will then need to go through the tabs at the top of the iPhone sync window and re check all of the items that you want synced to your phone. The only data that was totally lost was my pictures, but after the iPhone finishes reloading, you may be able to go back to the desktop and cut the backup folders and paste them back into the backup folder and restore your phone from a previous back up and you may still be able to recover those photos. This worked for me so I hope it works for all of you as well. Thanks!

Windows 7 Pro x64 does not detect HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor (accelerometer)

Hello there.
I installed win7pro x64 yesterday and already came across a serious problem that makes my way of using the notebook a bit dangerous for my precious data.
When I was working on HP-branded Vista 32bit (from recovery partition etc), there was a device called HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor together with HP ProtectSmart (or Protect Smart) software. In other words, the HDD accelerometer that parks HDD's heads when it "feels" it's falling or something, and software for it. It worked brilliantly.
Until I decided to install Win7... Then, surprisingly after a driver-install failure and taking a look at the Device Manager I noticed that there's no such device! I checked it three times, looked at every device's property, even reinstalled Vista 32bit back - it showed again - and installed Win7 - not detected again. There's nothing that has Device ID's HPQ004! I remember people saying that after fresh Windows install, there were 6 unknown devices or more. I had only 5. [Fingerprint device, 3x MemCard reader and IR receiver]. There was no accelerometer... Also, when I try to install the drivers/software, the windows pops up:
ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection: with text Property.AccelerometerNotPresent
and then another one saying something like Features were not installed because of installation error or unsupported feature.
So now I'm stuck with a notebook that is unsafe to travel with, because the disk is no longer protected
I already installed all the drivers available from HP page, even downloaded newest ones from Intel (chipset) etc.
Is there a solution to this? Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Windows 7 is officially out and available as RTM version, not beta, so I think HP should open support for it and release new drivers for win7! And most importantly, fix this issue ...

Well, thanks to myself, I fixed it. After some thinking I remembered that ACPI = BIOS-related. It appears that there is a problem with the newest (F16) BIOS.
F.16 changelog is below:
Version: F.16 A (26 May 2009) Fixes
Updates the Intel MRC Code to version 2.7.
Updates the Intel AHCI OP ROM to version iSrc 1.20_E.0012 11252008.
Updates the BIOS to support Microsoft Windows Vista Operating Systems with Service Pack 2 (SP2).
I went back to version F.14 and... boom! New (unknown) device found And guess what, it's ACPI/HPQ0004... So now my HDD is protected again ^^ yay!
I don't know which of these changes cause that, but it looks that that can be fixed.
I'll go back to F.16 again to see if the device will disappear and then contact HP support on that case.
EDIT: Well, F.16 breaks things again, so it's definetely a BIOS problem. Thanks for... umm... well... at least spread the word, guys I hope this helps if someone has the same problem.

2.23 Apps must follow the iOS Data Storage Guidelines or they will be rejected

My Multi Issue v14 App (24124) was just rejected by Apple. Apparently because storage of the data (folios?) was not iCloud compatible.
Is this related to v14? Would building a v15 app resolve the issue?
or is there some other problem?

We found that your app does not follow the iOS Data Storage Guidelines, which is not in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines.
In particular, we found magazine downloads are not cached appropriately.
The iOS Data Store Guidelines specify:
"1. Only documents and other data that is user-generated, or that cannot otherwise be recreated by your application, should be stored in the /Documents directory and will be automatically backed up by iCloud.
2. Data that can be downloaded again or regenerated should be stored in the /Library/Caches directory. Examples of files you should put in the Caches directory include database cache files and downloadable content, such as that used by magazine, newspaper, and map applications.
3. Data that is used only temporarily should be stored in the /tmp directory. Although these files are not backed up to iCloud, remember to delete those files when you are done with them so that they do not continue to consume space on the user’s device."
For example, only content that the user creates using your app, e.g., documents, new files, edits, etc., may be stored in the/Documents directory - and backed up by iCloud. Other content that the user may use within the app cannot be stored in this directory; such content, e.g., preference files, database files, plists, etc., must be stored in the /Library/Caches directory.
Temporary files used by your app should only be stored in the /tmp directory; please remember to delete the files stored in this location when the user exits the app.
It would be appropriate to revise your app so that you store data as specified in the iOS Data Storage Guidelines.

How do I prevent windows from shutting down ITUNES with a Data Protection Execution error when trying to sync with my Iphone 4S in a 32 bit windows environment?

I first was not able to install ITunes 10.5. Apple upgrade installer caused a data protection execution error and windows reverted the process back to the original software. I then removed ITunes through the control panel ap. I removed Bonjour and quicktime. I could not use the windows uninstaller to remove the apple upgrade installer and had to find a fix it program on the microsoft web site to fully remove this program. After doing this, I was able to load and install itunes 10.5. However, now when I try to sync my new 4S phone, the sync only goes to the 2nd or 3rd step before eliciting a DPE error and causing itunes to shut down. I tried making a new user profile. Opened I tunes in the new profile and began to search for music on my computer. The program again elicited a DPE error. I looked to see if quicken was still on the computer and maybe causing a hangup, but it is no longer installed. Ok, I am at wits end and have spent much too much time on this issue. Please help.

I was able to finally stop ITunes from crashing after many days of searching n restarting my computer many times.
a) First I went to this site ->http://forums.techarena.in/guides-tutorials/1119812.htm that showed me how to disable DPE. Please make sure that u have good virus...etc.. protection first before doing this. I have Avast Internet Security. RESTART UR COMPUTER..
b) I then uninstall ITunes by following this site ->http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923 RESTART UR COMPUTER..
c) I then downloaded a beta version of ITunes. I happen to download beta 7 before the final of 10.5 version came out. Installed it. After installing I click on it n it said somewhere along the line of "this ITune ver. expired" I checked in my Programs n Features n notice that QuickTime was installed w that beta version.
d) Go online n download the final version of ITunes ->http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ ...... After u finish dling install that. After that's done connect your IPod, IPhone...etc... n click on ITunes, it should sync all the way.
I was finally able to sync all thru the steps insteading of it crashing on me midway. Hopefully this will work for you. Good luck !

Error installing DPM Agent in Update Rollup 5 for System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager

I have updated my main DPM server to Update Rollup 5 for System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager and all went well.
All Protected servers updated and rebooted and continued protection - EXCEPT one;
Physical Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.
Tried Manual install - no luck
Removed Protection Agent / rebooted / re-installed - no luck
Installed all updates / re-install - no luck
this seems to be the only indicated problem in MSDPMAgentInstall.LOG.....

We just recently upgraded our DPM server from DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 primarily because it is supposed to support Data Deduplication. Our primary File server that holds our home directories etc. is limited on space and was quickly running low so just after
we got DPM 2012 in place we optimized the drive on the file server which compressed the data about 50%. Unfortunately shortly after enabling deduplication the protected shares on the deduplicated volume are getting a Replica is Inconsistent error.
I continually get Replica is Inconsistent for the Server that has deduplication running on it. All of the other protected servers are being protected as they should be. I have run a consistency check multiple times probably about 10 times and it keeps going
back to Replica is inconsistent. The replica volume shows that it is using 3.5 TB and the Actual protect volume is 4TB in size and has about 2.5 TB of data on it with Deduplication enabled.

Steps taken to resolve - I’ve spent some time doing some searches and haven’t found any solutions to what I am seeing. I have the data deduplication role installed on the DPM server which has been the solution for many people seeing similar issues. I have
also removed that role and the added it back. I have also removed the protected server and added it back to the protection group. It synchronizes and says consistent then after a few hours it goes back to inconsistent. When I go to recovery it shows that I
have recovery points and it appears that I can restore but because the data is inconstant I don’t feel I can trust the data in the recovery points. Both the protected server and the DPM servers’ updates are managed via a WSUS server on our network.
You may suggest I just un-optimize the drive on the protected server however after I have optimized the drive it takes a large amount more of space to un-optimize it (Anyone know why that is) anyways the drive isn’t large enough to support un-optimization.
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advanced.

Ok I ran a consistency check and it completed successfully with the following message. However after a few minutes of it showing OK it now shows Replica is Inconsistent again.

Data protection in FDM

We're trying to set up data protection so that FDM doesn't overwrite manual input schedules but only replaces GL data. We've set up a C1 member called "Data_GL" to receive this data. The FDM manual reads as follows but offers no clues on how to set and use the settings and functionality. Any help on making this work will be gratefully received.

From the FDM manual, Configuring Integration Settings:
* Data Protection Switch—Enables FDM to protect data in the target system from being overwritten during data imports based on a specified protection value. Use this when data is entered into the target system through a method other than FDM. <Selected "Yes">
* Protection Value 1—Stores the value used with the Data Protection Switch. It is the value that is not to be overwritten. Selected "Data_GL" - C1 member for storing GL data>
* Protection Operator—Stores an operator (= or <>) to determine if items equal to the value stored in the Protection Value 1 are to be protected, or if items that do not equal the value stored in the Protection Value 1 are to be protected.
<Selected "not equal signs" ... that is, protect everything that is not "Data_GL">

I too have found the FDM manual does not provide detail on how to set up Data Protection functionality.

What's causing VDP to fail installation? VDP: Configuring Install Storage vSphere Data Protection 5.5 An error occurred while performing this task.

I have been pulling my hair to figure out what's going on here. I can deploy the VDP ovf appliance fine, it's allowing setup to finish so I can start using it. It fails at the final stretch, during the Storage Configuration. Here's the errors event log:

When aligning to stage if something is selected and you click an align button while align to stage is on then the selected item will align to where you said (far left or right, far top or bottom, center etc.)
When NOT using align to stage you can select TWO items and align them relative to eachother.

Continuous Data Protection for Arch Linux

Does anyone know of any Linux software that offers Continuous Data Protection (CDP)?
Obviously free software is ideal, but I'm not ruling out commercial stuff.
Infact so far the only thing I've found is a commercial product, called NetVault: Replicator, but it has an unknown pricetag.
(I've e-mailed them to ask, but since it's Saturday I'll probably be waiting at least 48 hours for a reply.)
Feature-wise, it's pretty simple: It want true CDP (ie: on every write, not simply regular snapshots), and I'd prefer something with a browser-accessible management area (but if it has a good API I can build my own if I have to).

Hmmm, well NetVault:Replicator doesn't actually offer proper CDP, and isn't going to in the immediate future.
So I'm still stuck without a solution and I can't think where to look next.
Anyone got any suggestions?

Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 agent: SetDpmServer returns error 0x80004005

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 server running business-critical applications. This is an ancient server, and I don't know who and how installed and configured its OS. I need to protect it using DPM 2012 R2.
I was unable to automatically deploy DPM agent to this server due to error, so I installed the agent manually. However, when I try to manually associate the agent with a DPM server, it returns the following error:

The link is invalid. I've found a Techne article mentioning this error code, which tells only to check access to the DPM server from the server with the agent. The agent does have access, but the error persists even if I turn off the firewall completely.
I even reset the local firewall rules to default settings, but it has had no visual effect (except I had to restore several rules manually).
I suspect that something is wrong with OS settings or services. Any ideas what can be investigated next?

1) In order to set Data protection mode, do I need to set anything on standby?
2) My database is in Maximum Performance mode. I set up following entry on init.ora:
LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2=’service=standby LGWR ASYNC’.
I want to change data guard protection mode from Max Performance to Max Protection. For that i have changed from the "ASYNC" attribute to "SYNC" attribute of the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n initialization parameter like:
LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2=’service=standby LGWR SYNC’.
But I have not changed the protection mode on the primary database using “alter database set standby database to maximize protection”.
Does it continue as Max Performance mode or will it throw any error?

But dont forget to check on standby if you have configured anything on LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n parameter[if you perform switchover in future], usually it will left blank.
