IOS fast app switching

I'm not sure if this issue is simply an IOS bug or something related to certain programs. That being said, after launching some programs for the first time (after reboot of iPad) and configuring it the way I like, most of the time when relaunching the app it will utilize the fast app switching feature of IOS and retain my customizations/views without having to reload the program in it's entirety. However after a period of time whether it be overnight or a few hours later when I relaunch the app it will completely reload the app - splash screen and all and force me to again customize my views. As often as I use these programs it becomes annoying. I was thinking that perhaps this was a bug in IOS 5.01 however after upgrading to 5.1 the behavior still exists.
I apprecaite any help!

This is likely one of 2 things... Either the developer hasn't coded it properly to work, or you are running up against a RAM wall. How many apps are you running at a time, and how many tabs do you have open in safari?

  • Fast App Switching Support

    Hi,
Since iOS 4+, apps now support Fast Switching, that is, when the application is closed it saves its memory contents and goes to background so that when the user taps the application again it resumes in the same state as it was when it was closed.
Adding Fast App Switching Support to existing Cocoa Applications is as simple as recompiling the code for the new SDK. I wonder if there's any way to implement this by using the PFI.

For a long time I assumed it wouldn't work, because when I switched away from my app it always restarted when I switched back. But then later I realized I was calling the application exit function on deactivate. Haven't had time to prove one way or another whether it can work.
I did try messing with shareobjects as a way to reinstate things, but that wasn't too successful.
Anyway, it should be something you can easily test.

  • IPad fast app switcher slow to bring up. What should I do?

When I double tap the home button on my iPad, the fast app switcher is slow to bring up. What should I do to?

    Try the following:
    1. Close all inactive apps in the Task Bar. Double-click the Home button and hold apps down for a second or two and tap the minus sign to close app.
    2. Try a reset. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple Logo

  • Can't kill apps using fast app switcher....help!

can't kill app using fast app switcher...help ?

Only a very few specifically designed Apps actually run in the background. Apps such as Music, turn by turn GPS etc. others are suspended when you push the home button or switch to a different App.

  • Add "Fast App Switching" to AssistiveTouch

Can "Fast App Switching" be added to AssistiveTouch. I have a hard time double-clicking the home button. It would be nice if it was included right next to Home on the menu.

Sorry, when I say "right next to Home", I mean right next to Home on the AssistiveTouch main popup menu.
    Thank you

  • Ios 7 app switcher ??

I read here that closing apps from the switcher  and loading them again drains power . In short he says not to remove apps from the switcher . Is it true ?
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/iphone/10757729/Ex-Apple-Genius-reve als-8-ways-to-extend-your-iPhone-battery.html

Yes it seems right but I would not expect it effects battery life much unless you constantly open and close the same apps.

  • When I double click Home button, all of my apps don't show in the bar -- only the four that reside there. Did a reset last night to fix the Home button (it sort of works now) but now this. Any ideas on why I can't do the fast app switch now?

When I double click Home button to change apps quickly, only the four apps that reside on the task bar show. All of my apps would show prior to my reset of the iPad last night (to fix the Home button). Any ideas on how to fix?

My undertanding is that when you double-click the home button, the apps that are shown are those that are currently active.  The reason you are not seeing all of them is that not all of them are active.  Before you can access an app in the multitask bar, it has to be turned on first.  As a test, try accessing the Notes application.  Return to the home screen by clicking the Home button ONCE.  Once the home screen appears, double click the home button to bring up the multitasking bar.  The Notes app should be on the far left.

  • Is it possible to shut off multitasking/fast app switching if you want to ?

For ex, I just looked up an address in motion X drive GPS. I'm in my house right now so I don't need it to constantly "be on" right now ... ?

If you don't have a current route set up that you're following, it's not "on", it's in frozen state. What you're wanting to do is remove its frozen state from the memory and CPU. Follow the poster's advice above my post.

  • Ever since I updated to iOS 8 on iPhone 5, sometimes when I press the home button just once it will open the app switcher or even the assistive button. Anyone else have this problem? Is it an iOS 8 glitch? Please help - very annoying.

I updated to iOS 8 on my iPhone 5 yesterday and now when I press the home button even once, it opens the app switcher (which is supposed to only open after pressing the home button twice quickly). Sometimes pressing the home button once even brings up the assistive button (which for me should take three button presses). This did not happen before I updated my software. Has anyone else had this issue? Know how to stop it? Very annoying and at this point feel like I should have waited before I did the update.

Hello ..do you have a history on the phone? did you get it wet? was it dropped? have you been using an authentic ORIGINAL apple charging cable?
this problem occurs when there is a short circuit  in the phone... you  most likely got  it wet at some point and maybe didnt even realize it? The moisture in the phone hasb probablly  oxidized one or several capacitors, integrated chips thereby short circuiting the phone. that is why he phone  is acting erratic because these short circuits inadvertently "activates" other circuits.. eventually the phone will not turn on anymore- the heat will stress the citcuit board and you will have discontinuity along your main power lines and the phone will cease to function..i see this alllll the time in our shop
the fact you upgraded to ios6 will even work the phone harder because its a more powerful operating system taking full advantage of the A4 chip..

  • After updating to iOS 8, when I hit the home button once it takes me to the "app switcher."

After updating to iOS 8, when I hit the home button once it takes me to the "app switcher."

Swipe from bottom of days listed ("Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, etc")  upwards.  I thought it was gone too but it's still there~just takes different way to access it.

  • IOS 8.3 iPhone 6 Plus - Respring upon activating app switcher

im having a nasty little bug that I've not seen anywhere else via Google searches and whatnot. I've been having this issue for a few months with the iPhone 6 Plus. Occasionally, when I double press the hone button to activate the app switcher, iOS will respring (not a full reboot, just a software restart). I first started noticing it badly after the 8.2 update, which I did OTA. I am a truck driver, and when I was home recently, I did a full backup, software restore, and backup restore via iTunes on my Mac mini. Two days later, 8.3 came out and I did the update via iTunes on the computer, not OTA. In the past few days, the respring has started again. It's nothing more than software instability, but i am wondering if if is connected with a feature such as background app refresh or something similar. I can try doing the same back up/reset/restore on my computer when I come home off the road next, but if there is a known solution I'd love to try it.
    iOS 8.3, iPhone 6 Plus 128GB

    Howdy tpfultz,
It sounds like your phone is quickly restarting when you double tap the Home button. Quitting the running apps (if possible) and restoring from a backup is where I would have started. Next I would have to restore the phone as new, and verify it still works:
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself.
If it does not work after restoring as new, then I would seek service for the phone:
    iPhone Repair and Service
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • Apps do not launch after fast user switch; requires restart

I have 3 users accounts on a mid-2010 with 12 GB RAM; two with parental controls - the kids.
The kids like to play games (particuarally Minecraft), so will log in a play for a while. Typcially when one is done playing they will use the fast user switch menu to go back to the "Login Window..." They are pretty good about shutting down the apps afterwards due to previous performance issues.
When the second user logs in, the only application that seems to work is Finder. Clicking on an app in the dock results in the "Denied"sound. Tyring to launch from Finder or from the dock using "Open" results in nothing happening. It just seems to ignore it - not even the spinny wheel.
It is almost like everything is locked for the second user and the restart clears it. Generally it is responsive for the upper menu items so it does not seem to be a memory or CPU issue. Activity montor does not show anything out of the ordinary.
This does not occur on my accout which I am currently running as an admin. (I shouldn't but am). I can login and run all the applications but if I switch to the second user nothing launches.
I have re-installed Mavericks, and ran both the file and permissions repair on disk. I cleared all of the old cahce. The only thing that seems to work reliably is to restart the system.
It also seems that if the first user logs out then when the second user tries to log in the system just seems to hang after trying to log into the second account. It swtiches to the user screen but gets stuck with the spinny wheel; this requires the one finger force reboot.

Generally yes, they will keep running. You can confirm this by running the "Activity Monitor" app to see their CPU usage.

  • IOS app switcher *can* be enabled and disabled

Inadvertently I've discovered that the app switcher can be turned on and off, contrary to most reports I've seen.  I searched the boards, but couldn't find any past mention of the trick, so here it is: double tap while on the lock screen.  This toggles the app switcher on and off, at least on iPhone 4 running 5.1.1.

Well, there's no such thing as a "textedit" file, they're just plain text files.  There are many text editors for iOS, and I've gone through quite a few (I tried the early ones and as newer, better ones came out, I'd buy into them).  My current choice is iA Writer.  There's also an iA Writer for the mac, so the two can keep files in sync.  This can use iCloud or Dropbox.  When you get a text file from iA Writer to a mac, you can then open it with TextEdit or any other text editor.

  • IPad 2, 3G, iOS 5.1, App Switch Crash

    Hello,
my beloved iPad2 crashes every time i double tap the home button. It also crashes when i used the gesture to reveal the app switch bar.
The first time it happend, i made a reset (hold power and home long, restart) and it fixed it.
Now it's not helping anymore and i can't multitask which is like a total product failure.
I'm really mad, does anyone know a fix? And please don't tell me to totally reset my ipad and use a backup. That would suck and degrade an iPad to a Windows PC basicly.
    Thanks for the help!
    David

    Have you tried the following:
    1. Restart iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, hold down the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
    2. Close inactive Apps
Double-click the Home button; hold Apps down (in the Task Bar) for a second or two until you see the minus sign. Tap and close all inactive Apps.
    3. Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the red slider.

  • Can no longer simultaneously stream an mp3 in Safari when using fast user switching option.

After updating to ios 5, I can no longer stream an mp3 in Safari when I use the fast user switching option.  For instance, if you are listening to streaming content in a Safari tab and want to reference another app as soon as you switch from the Safari stream pauses.
This was not the case with previous versions of ios.  Any ideas on a work around to restore this functionality to keep Safarr streaming content in the background?

User switching problems is the very first thing I noticed with SL. I have a host of other problems with SL but this is one of the most frustrating. The user switching did not work on 10.6 very well either but was wicked fast in 10.5.x
Apple rewrote the Kernel so this type of thing is expected, still the test crew missed this very noticable problem. Hopefully 10.6.2 has a fix.
