IPhone 4s Software Update fail (from 5.1.1 to 6.1.3)

Hey everyone
I have been holding back from updating my iOS on my iphone 4s (I know - not a smart move) I am currently still on 5.1.1 and trying to update to 6.1.3 (finally) from the phone itself (not via iTunes)
I am trying to downlaod and install the update using Wi-Fi connectivity, but it just wouldn't let me? Kept saying An Error occured while downloading...
It didn't give me any error code or any other explanation. It just simply won't update
I know it was silly of me to begin with for not updating for so long, but I don't understand why my phone is rejecting the update? If this is even what is happening..
Also I sent my iMac for repair recently, came back with a Lion (which was what I had on there previously anyway) but it wasn't updated? So I couldn't just open iTunes and restore all my contacts..
AND I am still currently in the process of downloading the updates - but something always happens as well, an error occured that I have to re-download the update, internet drops on and off, etc.
The reason I wanted to update was (this is a whole separate problem) my 4s kept crashing the apps, not doing anything out of ordinary - it just crashes everytime i start or a open an app. So I would hard reset my phone (turning it off and on again) and then I would find all my contacts gone. No other entries are gone, just my contact names! All messages and calendar entries are all still there - just no contact names in my address book. ***?
After sleuthing here and there, and found no real solution to this problem. I decided to update my iOS because one of the discussion thread I found told me to try that. Heck, why not.
SO I tried uploading and this is where I end up..
Does ANYONE have any idea what the **** is going on? Does anyone else out tehre have the same problem? Surely this is not just me!!

Thanks RajaRani. But I decided to sleep on it last night and did another attempt of updating iOS through iPhone and also through iTunes this morning.
Everything works normal now! And I also got my contacts back. I am not sure what happened there, so unfortunately this thread would be of no help to anyone else if RajaRani's advice didn't work. Hopefully it works for everyone else though

  • IPhone/Ipad software update fail on MacBook Pro

Apologies in advance that this will be a bit convoluted. I Try to keep it concise.
I am trying to update my iPhone/iPad to latest software version 4.3.3. This works fine on my MacBook Air, but not on my MacBook Pro (First i& version, early 2010).
I phoned Mac support and been through all their check lists (Transfer purchases, backup, sync, turn off firewall, etc.). I have used disk repair, cocktail and Clean-my-Mac. I have removed everything form the startup menu in the admin account (which I am using) and have disabled/removed all security software.
I am still getting the following error message, after itunes has gone through extracting the software and syncing the device:
"The iPhone "xxx" cannot be updated at this time because the iPhone software server could not be contacted or is temporaily unavailable." (see shot below).
As I am using the same wireless router/network connection for the MacBook Air (which as I said updates fine), it is not likely to caused by router settings, but rather something on the MacBook Pro. As I uses it as my main machine and where i keep my Itunes library, I would like to be able to perform the software updates for the iDevices from there.
Has anyone had the same problem, and possibly a solution. Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Rebane

  • HT4623 i tried to do the software update on my iphone 5 several times. But a tab keeps popping up that reads "SOFTWARE UPDATE FAILED" AN ERROR HAS OCCURED DOWNLOADING i0S 7.0.2." Why won't this phone update?

My iphone 5 will not update. Have tried several times. keeps popping up "software update failed"...Howcan I get this toupdate??

This has solved loads of people who have this issue and have used an alternate DNS setting.  Below are instructions for both iPhone OTA and on you Mac
If you are getting the error message "Unable to check for update" when you try an OTA (over the air update)
    Change DNS Servers
    Settings -> Wi-Fi
Click the blue arrow on your connected network
Delete everything in DNS and replace it with 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
    Try again
If this works, you will probably want to remove the WiFi network using "Forget This Network" and then reconnect to it to get your original DNS servers back. Alternatively, make a note of the original DNS servers before deleting them and replace it after you are done.
If you are getting the error message "Unable to check for update" when you try through iTunes
    On your Mac
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network.
Select the network connection service you want to use (such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet, unless you named it something else) from the list, and then click Advanced.
Click DNS, and then click Add at the bottom of the DNS Servers list. Enter the IPv4 address for the DNS server.
    You can use OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    or
You can Google Public DNS if you want
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
I have actually repointed my routers DNS so all my devices now point to OpenDNS servers

  • Still getting "Software Update Failed" when attempting to download iOS 7 on iPhone 4S.

I've tried countless times now to download iOS 7 on my 4S which is currently running iOS 6.1.3. It downloads completely then in the "Preparing Update..." stage it gives me an error box saying "Software Update Failed. An error occurred downloading iOS 7.0." The same thing happens every time, I've rebooted and reset my pone several times as well as logging in an out of my Apple ID all with no success. It's not like it takes an unusual amount of time downloading or anything, and once it finishes downloading it shows less storage in the "About" section in "Settings" but goes back to where it was once it gives the error message. Just a note, I was able to download iOS 7 on my iPad 3 the day the software was released without a long waiting period or any hassle. I appreciate any input. Thank you.

Thanks for the response. I have 16.5 GB of available space at the moment. I've tried it connected to a wall charger and connected to my wifi, my schools wifi, and my gyms wifi all with no success. I have not tried it from iTunes but after posting this question a few suggestioned discussions came up, one of which recommended backing up to iCloud or iTune and then performing a complete restore. I'm in the process of doing that now, whether it works or doesn't work I will get back to either way. Thanks again.

  • I've been trying for 2 weeks to update my iPhone 4S (7.0.6) to iOS 7.1 OTA but it fails all the time...telling me software update failed..I need some support pls!!

The problem occurres after the downloading is complete and when its in "Preparing Update" procedure and specfically in its last progress (near the end). Suddenly a message pop ups saying that "Software Update Failed" \n "An error occured downloading iOS 7.1."
I've restarted the update process for the 20 th time!!! and reset my iphone twice to factory settings, but still nothing change, same error occures...
    My iPhone specs
    Version : 7.0.6 (11B651)
    Model : MD235AE/A

Did it work for you with iTunes?
I have the same problem with my iPad mini. I have done almost all updates of my iOS devices OTA.
    I never update issues before.
Also iPad 2 and iPhone 5 just worked fine.
Only now my iPad mini struggles with the update. Did a factory reset too.
And now have iOS 7.0.2 (11A501) on an iPad Model MD543FD/A.
World prefer OTA instead of iTunes.
    Thank you for any help.

  • 4S update from 7.1.2 to 8.1.2, says Software update failed

The device is confirmed it is a 4s, but we never upgraded to IOS 8 yet.  I continue to get the Software Updated failed and the close and settings box comes up.  Whichever you click on it goes back to the update screen.  I am on very fast Wifi and the device is plugged in.  Two days ago it said there was not enough space, so we deleted videos and now there is 5.7 GB available.  I tried to update through ITunes, but the internet is too slow at home and it says 20 hours to update.  We tried that twice and after 15 hours the "software update failed" notification comes up.  Any ideas?  I also turned off the phone and turned it back on.

I would reset the phone - no data loss involved - and try again

very good. You also had posted originally on the Using Apple Support Communities forum (dedicated to "How do I use this forum and find My Stuff in it?"). I had already asked our gracious Hosts to move it to Using iPhone where it now resides and will likely get more prompt attention. In the meantime, you might consider browsing and/or searching Using iPhone for similar issues as your own.

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

  • I am unable to get past the first step of Winston Churchill's answer because my phone says "checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the Internet". Did my WiFi connection also get lost?

I am unable to get past the first step of Winston Churchill's answer because my phone says "checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the Internet."  Did my iphone's WiFi connection also get lost with the Contacts, Mail and Text Messages?  When I tried the software update, as recommended by Winston Churchill, the iphone was connected to my desktop which is connected to the Internet.

You can't use your computers Internet connection to update your phone from the phone itself. If you want to use the computers Internet connection to update your phone you must update it through iTunes.
