Iphone 5 insane data usage

I have had an iPhone on AT&T since launch. I never went over a gig in any month. I have used half a gig in 2 days with Verizon!! Worse, it uses LTE while I am at home with a rock solid wifi connection. If I turn cellular off altogether I can still see, for example, a YouTube video. But if I leave it on, while still connected with wifi, it ***** data like a vampire. I don't stream video, use Itunes match, pandora, etc.
A single view of a regular web page--say, NY Times, will register as 15mb!!!
And, all day, it leaks data even with no apps running!
I spent over 4 hours on the phone with Verizon.  I called today to check the status of this problem, and found that they had not even opened a ticket!!
They have assured me that I will not be charged for any overages, but this is a huge problem.  My wife's ATT Iphone 5 has used maybe 100 mb in the same period, which would be completely consistent with our usage.
So far, nobody at Verizon has said a peep, but this is all over the place:

Will Verizon acknowledge the problem and what is being done?  There are going to be a lot of shocked people when the bills come out!  This is a billion dollar plus problem, and I hope that they start to take it seriously.

Fix appears to have worked for me, maybe, knock on wood. I've been going back and forth with support, I don't recommend it unless you take sedatives beforehand. First time I looked about a week ago, 7 days into using my new i5, I had a gig, with me being home on wireless almost the entire time. Also I don't do movies or stuff like that, in the past couple years my monthly average has been about 300mb. So I contacted them and pointed that out, phone was new, no movies, on wireless, phone itself reported 180mb. I got a response that I must have an app running in the background. I decided it wasn't worth it to try to get through their boilerplate responses since I had 1 gig and my limit was 2. Then it jumped up again, can't remember how much. Support: must be an app running in the background. So I left it again. Then a couple days later I got, in succession in 30 seconds, text warnings for 75%, 90%, and then over. So I went and looked, as I had been every few hours, according to them I had used 3.5 gigs in 6 hours. I went back to them again, with all the same info plus the latest event, this time I got "it seems like something might be wrong." I'm sitting on that message wondering how it is their support could not have taped to their foreheads knowledge of the bug. Where is the "we are aware of the problem." Anyway, since the fix 2 days ago my use has been pegged at at almost 5gb, not moved. Now I have to go look because who knows.

  • Insane Data Usage When Phone Is Not In Use

I started noticing over the last month or so, that my wife's line has been using triple the data I do.
She is not a data user as I am...
Looking at the data logs, I notice weird things like the below, usage in Megs:

    Can anybody help???

I am having the same problem.  Went to a Verizon store to see if someone there could help me.  While in the store another customer was in asking the same question.  We were both told by the Verizon store manager that she couldn't help us.  She told us to call Verizon to get it straightened out.  Tried to get through to Verizon on the phone and got tired of being on hold for 30 minutes.  Went online to try to "chat" with a representative and I couldn't get through to anyone that way either.  I have a shared plan with my husband and we have never gone over the 4GB.  Now it is continually sending alerts that we are going to get charged for overage.  The records show data being used all hours.  Even when we are asleep???  Hope Verizon gets this straightened out soon.

  • Exessive iphone 5 data usage on Telstra?

I'm getting excessive usage on the new IOS6, Iphone 5, approx 700 in 7 days.
Comparable to my previous IOS5, Iphone 4 - my monthly data back then was approx 200-400MB per month.
7 days into my new Iphone 5 (LTE disabled also) i'm getting approx 700MB of downloads when most of the time the phone is either idle at night or sync'd to a wifi network with 30mbps+ download speeds.
Of course the main usage is streaming video from youtube, to which i've kept to minimum however there is usage that I cannot explain in general.
Carrier states no issue with their end.
At this stage the monthly usage will be approx 3GB which is 7.5 times greater than previous hardware/ios.
    Potential issues:
    1. the new youtube (non ingegrated) app may not compress like the previous integrated ios5 youtube one perhaps did using international video compression standards (i'm not sure if it did however). i.e. on the 28th Sept 5-7 x 2min videos on chewed through approx 184mb of data.
    2. the iphone is not using wifi as the main preference or is switching between 3G/LTE and wifi for various applications
    3. excessive & heavy payloaded application polling from the iphone
I cannot see any threads that suggest a fix other than downloading a compression cloud service app like Onavo - not a great solution. Even then this doesnt compress streaming services like facetime or youtube.
I can understand a new phone, with new tech requiring greater bandwidth however the % jump is very exessive. Many users will be unaware of this and Telstra customers potentially getting charted at 2$AUD per MB after thier plan data allowance; thats $2000 per GB!.
Any ideas on the root cause of this problem?

Data usage is being displayed on my screen everytime some data is used. The screen reads- ur last data session usage was ,foe example, 1.540MB.

  • IPhone 5 data usage problem

I have recently been using a ton of data. My cycle starts on the 1st, it's not the 11th and I've used 3.3 of 6. Last two months I've used 8gb of 6gb. This is not normal it never used to do this.
I've turned every "use cellular data" off. I've turned off syncing, iTunes Match, send data to iTunes, ad tracking. All of it. Even turned LTE off. All podcasts are set to only use wifi. I've gone through my phone every way.
But I'm wondering how many people having this problem use the app "the score"?
If you I'm wondering if the solution is in calendars. Although I had all my emails set to manual, if you go into advanced it still shows push.
Let me know if it works for you.
Settings>calendar>advanced> then set all from push to manual.
Then go to the score app, and turn off alerts for every team you have a checkmate on the bell.
This is my last idea, I've already called apple and Rogers to see what they can do, and they told me to delete any 3rd party data trackers, and every time your on wifi to switch cellular data off in settings. What an inconvience, what's a phone without being able to use data without huge overage bills.

I thank you for the input but
"If you I'm wondering if the solution is in calendars. Although I had all my emails set to manual, if you go into advanced it still shows push."
I had mentioned "push" everything is set to manual.
Seriously I feel like i know the iphone in and out. So if there is something i havnt mentioned or if anyone has the same problem lets discuss.

  • IPhone 5 data usage.

Is it possible to get the iPhone 5 to a state where cellular data is turned on but the phone does not consume any data whatsoever.
After using up my 1GB data allowance within 15 days of having the iPhone 5 (upgraded from a 3GS on a different UK network with half the data allowance and rarely used it up)... it got me thinking about what on my phone actually uses data and how come i've used a ridiculous amount more since i've had my new iPhone 5.
With cellular data turned on, all notifications turned off, location services off, everything you can imagine that would consume data turned off ... when you play games, it still consumes data.  I have disabled and turned off game centre.... but it still consumes data.
For example, playing "Logosquiz" for about 2 minutes receives about 150kb.  Why?  Surely with gamecentre disabled, games shouldn't consume any data whatsoever?

Put your phone in "Airplane mode" then turn on "3G" & Wifi" then see what data is being used.

  • Verizon iPhone and Data Usage

Does anyone have some sort of gauge to judge how much data I can expect to use in any given month?
I understand "depending on the individual." I'm not using this phone for for business, just occasional web surfing and such.
If anyone has the experience and would like to share their experience, I would appreciate it. Oh, and one more thing, are there any traps to look out for that will run the bill up?
    Thanks

  • Iphone 5 - anyone having huge cellular data usage problem on ATT

I upgraded from Iphone 3g to Iphone 5. Over a period of last year, My average monthly data usage is approx 400MB (total less than 5GB in a year). AT&T is reporting that my Iphone 5 data usage crossed 6GB in a 3 day period . I called AT&T and have to listen to LTE, Iphone 5 and Multiple app running in background  non-sense as an explanation for 6GB data usage over a 3 day period. My Itune and app store does not download over cellular network. Even though Iphone 5 automatically creates an Icloud account during initial setup, I am not connected to Icloud on Iphone and never even logged on to Icloud account. IOS 6 setting for sending data diagnostic over cellular network is set to no.
I feel this is same bug which Verizon user are reporting and ATT is not commenting on it till now. How can I consume over 6GB worth of data over a 3 day period which is more than my total data usage for a year. That is equivalent of streaming hd video (approx 300 MB per hour) for 20 hours.

  • Are there known data usage problems with iPhone 4S?

I just got my first iPhone. I barely know how to use the thing and pretty much only use it for checking my work email. I blew through 7 GB of data in 20 days. From everyone I've talked to there is no way I have done this based on my limited usage. So something is running in the background that I can't control. I've turned off the cellular setting and told it to only use wifi, and when I'm at home it appears to be using my wifi. I read some other comments here saying it could be a problem with the iOS, but it didn't seem like a definite answer. Any other ideas?

Last month I checked the data usage on my iPhone 4S three days after the start of a new billing cycle. To my shock I discovered that I had been charged with about 193 MB of usage. That was very odd because 193 MB is well above what my total data usage is each month. Immediately contacted AT&T Customer Service--twice. Each time they could not provide an explanation as to why the data usage was charged to my phone. All they could tell me was that all of the 193 MB were charged on the very day the new billing cycle started. They did try to sell me a larger data plan.
I thought maybe this was just an odd thing that couldn’t be explained. Kept a close eye on my data usage for the reminder of the billing cycle and didn’t have another large data charge. I still stayed well under the 300 MB plan limit even with the unexpected 193 MB of usage on day one.
Then my wife checks her iPhone 4S data usage on day one of this month's billing cycle at about 9 AM. She finds that she has been charged with 30 MB of data usage when she hasn't even used her phone. Again, 9 AM; day one of new billing cycle; 30 MB of usage; no active applications running. How can this be? She contacted AT&T Customer Service and once again they were no help. She made two phone calls and also spoke with one CS Manager, but no one could explain why she has been charged for the 30 MB. Anyone else having this problem? Please help us resolve this if you know what to do? Extremely frustrating to be charged for data we know we are not using. Getting no help from AT&T Customer No-Service.

  • IPhone 4s iOs 6 data usage problems on Verizon

Last night around 6PM I lifted the usage controls on my teenage cousin's iphone 4s. We had never set a data limit for the phone because she only uses it for internet when at home on the wifi network. We only had it on her phone to be able to block unwanted numbers, but the feature also allows customers to set data caps, internet restrictions by age ect.
Prior to last night her usuage was minimal. However, within 6 hrs of the usuage control being lifted suddenly I was notified we'd hit 50% of our 6g data plan. In the morning when I woke up I had a text saying we'd hit 75% of our usage plan. I logged into Verizon and it indicated she had consumed 4.6g.
I spoke with Verizon and the first reprepresenative told me that this was a known iOs 6 issue for iphones and asked me to check if the phone was using the that operating system. She said if it was Verizon would be giving credits to customers because it was a known issue. I hung up, called my aunt and learned that in fact iOs 6 was installed. She also confirmed that the phone settings had not changed. It was still only using wifi. Verizon data usage remained turned off.
I called Verizon back and spoke with a second representative who then told me that it was not an iOs 6 issue, but just an iPhone 5 issue. She said the previous information given to me was incorrect; it was hardware and not operating system based problem. I then reapplied usage controls and went in to set a data limit, for the first time, and discovered that the iPhone's data usage had now reached 5.4g of 6g. I still have 18 days left on my billing cycle and just .6g of data remaining. It seems crazy to me that I should have to set a cap on data usage for a phone using wifi to prevent that phone from maxing out verizon data, but that is what I have done until I can get to the bottom of this
The rep told me to visit Apple for further details. I also googled it and found stories on CNN and TheNextWeb reporting instances where individuals with the iOs 6 on iphone 4s were also experiencing problems, but nothing concrete on how to resolve it.
Can someone please clarify for me what is going on or where I can find a solution to this.
    Thank you in advance.

The second rep is a moron. Yes it is a software issue and not just an iphone 5 one.
Something you didn't mention is what carrier software version is on the iphone. Verizon sent out a settings update around Oct 5th because of this issue. I believe you should be on 13.1. it's definitely something.1
I've heard talk if you go Settings-General-About it will OTA load the update but I'm not certain about this. Frankly I would wipe the phone and set it up new. During the restore iTunes should check that the software is up to date and find the carrier updates. Make sure your cousin has all her photos, contacts etc. And warn her that she'll lose her texts. Although I have heard if you google around someone figured out how to erase everything but backups from an iTunes backup file. That was for iOS 5 as I recall but it might still work. So have her do a backup in iTunes, duplicate it and play if you feel techie enough.

  • Large data usage transfer every 6 hours while on a WiFi network, who is doing this transfer? Is Verizon polling my phone causing this usage?

I have three iPhone 5s. All are using my WiFi while at home. One iPhone is sending data over Verizon's network, not WiFi, every 6 hours or so. The time of this data transfer changes every few days. I see data usage number on my Verizon account ranging from a few kilobytes to almost a gigabyte. Is this due to Verizon polling the iPhone for data usage and billing purposes on a regular basis? And what do these billing numbers mean? Where does Verizon get these numbers? Any running apps while on my WiFi should use the WiFi, not Verizon, correct?

I'm having the same issue and this month these data pulls equated to 1891.51 MB!!!
Model: iPhone 5S 64GB.  Today I received a notification from Verizon that I had exceeded my data plan.  I just went through my entire usage detail report on my phone and separated-out everything that appears to be part of a 6-hour pattern.  When I'm at home and most of the time while I'm at work, I am connected to wifi.  These data pulls often happen in the middle of the night, when I know for a fact that my phone is charging and connected to wifi at home.  Below are the results of the pattern analysis.  Keep in mind that I removed all lines that, as far as I could tell, were not part of a 6-hour pattern.
THE PROOF: You sent me three alerts immediately after pulling data from my phone.
The first alert said that I had used 75% of my data plan on 8/11/2014 at 9:45pm while I was at home on wifi.  There was a data pull logged at 9:45pm which was part of the 6-hour pattern above.
The second alert stated that I had used 90% of my data at 10:46pm on 8/14/2014; the data log shows a pull just before the alert at 10:45pm.
The third alert telling me I had used all of my data came today while my phone was sitting next to me, connected to wifi at the office.  The alert arrived at 12:48pm, the log shows a data pull at 12:48pm.

    How about an explanation Verizon?

  • Why do I have mysterious cellular data usage (Verizon) every 6 hours on all 3 of my iphone 5's?

I have recently uncovered mysterious cellular usage on three different iPhones. I am a Verizon customer and discovered this by examining the cellular data use logs. What I found are a long series of mysterious data usage logs. I have visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 3 times now to log notes and discuss the issue. It is being escalated.
    The characterstics are as follows:
All my family phones have the appropriate IOS and hardware updates (verified by the GeniusBar at my local Apple Store).
This is occuring across three phones, which happen to all be iphone 5. Two are 5 and the other a new 5s. We do have one iphone 4 in the family but the issue (so far as I can tell), is not happening on it.
One iphone 5 has IOS 7, the other IOS 6. The new 5s has of course IOS 7.
Mysterious data use happens even while connected to wifi.
Each mysterious data use log entry is exactly 6 hours apart. For example: 2:18 AM, 8:18 AM, 2:18 PM, 8:18 PM, 2:18 AM ... etc. It cycles AM and PM, same times, for a day to many days until some condition causes it to change (evolve).
The times evolve. One day it could be cycling through at one time series, then it changes to another time sequence and continues until the next condition.
The data usage is anywhere from a few K to many MB. The largest I've seen is over 100 MB.
The logs clearly show these usages are not due to human interaction. It is a program.
If cellular connection is used frequently (by the owner), the pattern is hard to pick out. Luckily, my family member is very good about only using wifi whenever possible, so these mysterious use patterns are easy to pick out.
Verizon allows access to 90 days worth of data logs, so I downloaded and analyzed them. This has been happening for at least 90 days. I have found 298 instances of mysterious use out of 500 total connections to cellular. A total of 3.5 GB of mysterious cellular data has been recorded as used in that 90 days by this phone alone. Only .6 GB of the total cellular data use is legitimate, meaning by the person.
This issue is occuring across three different phones. Two are iPhone 5, and the third is a recently purchased iPhone 5s. The 5s I have not touched beyone the basic startup. I have left it alone on a desk for 3 days, and looking at the logs, the mysterious data use in the same pattern is occuring.
So ... I am speaking to both sides, Verizon and Apple to get answers. Verizon puts their wall up at data usage. It doesn't matter how it is being used, you simply need to pay for it. Yes, the evidence I have gathered is getting closer to someting on Verizon's end.
Before pressing in that direction, I am hoping someone reading this may recognize this issue as a possible iPhone 5 issue ... OR ... you, right now, go look at your data usage logs available through your carrier's web account, and see if you can pick out a pattern of mysterious use. Look especially at the early morning instances when you are most likely sleeping.
I am hoping this is a simple issue that has a quick resolution. I'm looking for the "ooohhh, I see that now ..." But I am starting to think this might be much bigger, but the fact is, most customers rarely or never look at their data usage details, much less discover mysterious use patterns.
The final interesting (maybe frightening part) thing about all this is that I discovered while talking to Verizon ... they do not divulge which direction the data is going. This goes for any use, mysterious or legitimate. Is cellular data coming to your phone, or leaving it? Is something pulling data from your phone? We know that it is possible to build malware apps, but the catch with my issue is that it is also happening on a brand new iphone 5s with nothing downloaded to it.
    Thanks for your time

Thanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
    Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ...

  • Unexplained Verizon Data Usage on Iphone 5s

I have data usage charges showing up on my Iphone 5s every day at 5:40am Eastern time.  The problem is that my phone is not being used at that time of day and is always connected to WiFi while I am home.  The data usage has been very large, from 60mb all the way up to 100mb.  I see that others have posted similar concerns so I'm throwing my voice in here saying that this is not our imagination, it is happening and killing out data usage.
Here is a screen grab of my data usage.  As you can see, every day at 5:40am, there is a large spike in usage.  My phone is not in use at that time:
There must be an explanation and resolution for this.

        Hi KingPumpkin,
We always want your charges to be accurate! Smartphones are now able to tell you what applications are using your data. Please go to cellular>use cellualr data for>and this list tells you what data was billed to your cellular data. You could screen shot this list when your done using the phone in the evening. Then compare the screenshot in the morning to see what application data has changed. Data overages can sometime be billed in delay. Your device is set to pick up the strongest signal on the device, so if the Wi-fi server is weak or reboots at 5:40am every morning, then the device will quickly switch to back the Verizon Wireless network until the Wi-fi server comes back up. You could also eliminate these charges by turning off the cellular data every night since the device is connected to Wi-fi.

  • My iPhone 5s has no visual voicemail or regular voicemail and data usage is off the charts....

Okay so problem number 1 with my new iPhone 5s is data usage has spiked tremendously. I don't know why this is as for the last 2 years I have had an iPhone 4 and barely ever used 1GB a month. Now with my 2GB allowance I reached 90% used midway through the month. I have turned off the LTE and now have turned off cellular data completely and am only using wifi. I don't understand why my data usage has been so high this month since I am using my phone the same way. Is it the LTE?
My second problem is my phone has no voicemail. It tells me visual voicemail is unavailable and to call my voicemail. Except when I call my voicemail it asks me for a password. I have had my phone number for over 5 years and never had a password and now I can't get into my voicemail. I tried resetting the Network settings, that did not work. I have left my self voicemails and no notification even shows up. I called *86 to create a voicemail and it asks for a password which I never made.
I am EXTREMELY angry with Verizon's service at this point. I can not use my data until next month, and now I can't even receive voicemail messages. If someone could please tell me what is going on I would be appreciative.

To answer your first question, the answer is yes, it is the LTE. Your iPhone 4 could only connect to 3G and so therefore unable to transfer data as quickly as 4G on the 5s. So then you end up using more data than you have before.
And your second question. I am not sure as to why it's asking for a password if it never was before. You can reset your voicemail password if you log into your MyVerizon account. Hope that helps

  • Cellular/data usage while connected to Wi-Fi with iPhone 5

I recently upgraded from an iPhone 4 to an iPhone 5 and when I view my usage details for data I am seeing small amounts of data use even while my phone is connected to Wi-Fi and charging. I did not see this with my iPhone 4.
The usage is small and I'm guesstimating adds up to 20-30MB per month, but wondering if this is normal.
My iPhone 4 was running iOS 5.1.1 and the iPhone 5 is running iOS 6.0.2 and Verizon 13.3.
I'm not if this is considered normal as I've read about the recent bug that was allowing a lot of data to leak while on Wi-Fi. Supposedly iOS 6.0.2 and Verizon 13.1 fixed this issue. Others have posted that a replacement phone fixed the issue.
The small data use seems to be about 30-90kb every couple of hours. Again, I never saw this with the iPhone 4.
Do others see this small data usage while on Wi-Fi?
    Thanks!
    David

Hmmm, I don't think that's the case. As I said, I can keep perfect track of wi-fi and 3G usage with the DataMan app. While I'm connected via wi-fi, there's a 90-10 ratio between wi-fi and 3G. There's a lot of wi-fi usage, meaning it is connected, at least, most of the time.
Maybe an alternative answer to my question, based on your reply, would be the fact that the connection might be dropped SOMETIMES, but not FOR GOOD, when the phone is locked. I would like to understand this behaviour better - why it is dropped? It really makes little sense to drop the wi-fi connection if it is known that it is much stabler, faster AND it costs me zero to use data with it.
I don't wanna spend my 3G data, that's why we keep looking for wi-fi connections everywhere we go, right?

  • Iphone 5 excessive cellular data usage

I am a new iPhone user and I am a bit concerned for how fast my phone burns through data. I have an iPhone 5, ios 7.0.4, and my cellphone provider is Fido in Canada (May be irrelevant info). I manually turn cellular data off whenever it's not in use. At times where I use wifi (which is about 98% of the time), I never leave cellular data on at the same time. So, I have 2 issues:
    1) In system services under Cellular data usage, "iTunes Accounts" seems to be the top user of data. I looked at some previous discussions on this matter and many have said that turning off iCloud would do the trick, as well as turning off 'push'. However, I have never had my iCloud account nor "iTunes and App store," logged on. I have 'updates' and 'use cellular data' turned off as well for this feature. On top of that, under "Mail, Contacts, and Calendars' I have Fetch New Data set as 'hourly' instead of "Push". So why is it that my under system services, 'iTunes Accounts" still jumps up a few hundred kb whenever I DO have cellular data turned on.
    2) How much data does the Facebook App use? Lets say I turn cellular data on, then I open up the Facebook App, and I scroll down my news feed. I do not select any pictures, videos, or profiles. I then check my data usage and somehow I burned 4mb on this specific app! I understand images take up more usage but I find that a bit suspicious.
Of course, this isn't the only app that seems to be hogging data. It's just amazing how other phone users (iphones and android users) can just leave their data on without their data randomly draining.

    You are welcome
Usually data consumed by system services is on the higher side.
I would suggest reseting the data counter and then checking again after few hours to know the real culprit.
To reset the counter, there's an option  "Reset Statistics", just under the list we discussed before.
This way you would get to know which app is using your data righ now.
