Iphone app distribution questions

My app is a very simple table drill down within a tab bar. From recommendations on this list I'd like to keep my data (the catalog - 250 items of 6 attributes) in a plist.
I can't give the user the ability to edit or add to the catalog/plist. But the catalog will get updated on the order of 3-4 times per year.
What's the simplest way to keep all the users' catalogs up-to-date? My first guess is just to reissue the app package with the updated plist built in. Thoughts or suggestions?
As for the initial distribution, I'm selling the app to a manufacturer that wants their 5000 dealers to have access at no charge. I'm guessing that means putting it on iTunes as a free app. And as above, resubmitting it to the iTunes store whenever I have an updated catalog. Thoughts or suggestions?
This is my first foray into actually finishing an app and trying to distribute it.
Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by 'a remote based data style app'. Is that the same as the server based solution mentioned above?
Oopss, sorry, yes. Server/remote versus local, on the device. It would be an elegant solution, with its own benefits, of course. I think you appreciate the extra effort tho.
If you need an example of how easy it can be to get into trouble depending on a simple upgrade solution...let me outline a true example.
I know of an outfit that paid handsomely/$$$$ to have a full page color ad appear in a major industry print magazine about an upgrade to an existing app that was in big demand, only to have the ad come out nearly three weeks before the app was approved. When the ad was placed, approvals were running between 7 & 10 days. By the time their print ad hit the streets, approvals had slowed to more than 3 weeks. Clearly they failed to count on a lengthy approval process.
They spent far too much time fending off rants on their forums, while also finding themselves defenseless against negative reviews in the app store. The magazine ad promised one thing, but what was being downloaded/purchased was another.
When the app was finally released, they didn't mess with the original app release date and choose instead to forego any visibility an updated release date would have bought them.
This happened to a competitor, and their timing loss was my coincidental gain. My app made it into the store right after their print ad surfaced and before their app was approved. Cha...ching for me.
So again, while pushing an upgraded app is a good plan if you pay attention, don't get too comfortable relying on a specific release date and don't let a client talk you into putting your neck into that particular noose.

  • IPhone Apps Distribution Certificate on Windows XP

    Hi there! total newbie here!
I had an idea for an application which i wanted to be programmed. being a total total newbie i asked someone to make it for me. its coming along nicely and will soon (hopefully) be on the app store.
The thing is, i need to get a app distribution Certificate for the application.
I do not have a mac and was wondering if i can get it some how using my windows computer?
If that is not possible, could it be done by someone using THEIR mac....or is a certificate something which can only be done using my own machine?
    Hope someone can help me.
    Thanks

If you trust your developer, your best bet would be to do all the downloading at that end. Your key and certificate can then be archived for your future use. In any case, you won't be able to use these docs without a development environment on a Mac. No matter where you download them, they need to be installed on a Mac and only an experienced developer should attempt to build the distribution package with them.

  • Iphone apps - 3 questions

Hi guys, hopefully this is easy, for someone in the know...
I went in to get an app for my iphone last night, hit install, was asked for my password, the installation process starts and then stops.
I am asked for my password again and then presented with a screen asking 3 questions to be provided, with answers, as a security "check".
    This is where I bailed...
Is this legit.... or some sort of scam....?
    yours in anticipation,
    Stu.

    It's legit: http://www.macrumors.com/2012/04/12/apple-enhancing-apple-id-safety-by-enforcing -security-question-requirements/

  • I need someone to answer a  few Find my Iphone App questions?

I lost my phone overseas...I got too drunk and lost it at some bar..I thought I was lucky because I had signed up for the find my iphone app on the ICloud. When I tried to locate my Iphone through the services, It couldn't find my Iphone because it was "OFFLINE" I assume it was because it was out of battery, making it impossible to find it now.
So I requested that my phone be put it in "lost mode", but since it's currently offline, it's Pending! I also added a contact number and a 50$ reward for the return of my phone, so the next time my phone is turned on and connects to the internet, it will lock and the stranger using my phone won't be able to get in to it and steal my info right?...But, seeing as my time is almost up being overseas, it seems very unlikely I'll be getting my phone back. So I might have to get a new phone!
My Question is, if I click on "Erase Iphone" now, it will erase all the data on my phone, And it won't be able to be tracked anymore, that's all fine and good. But the thing is, since my phone is currently off line, it's currently a pending action and won't erase the data unless it's turned on and connected to the internet again....SO, if I were to get a New Iphone, (I am eligible to uprgrade) it would be risky right? Because if I get a new Iphone and get all comfy with a new iphone, and someone turns on my old IPhone, the "Erase Iphone" request will commence and it will delete all the data on my old iphone as well as my NEW iphone right?
Cause I will be using the same Apple ID for my new Iphone! I can only assume that this is how it works....Apple isn't very clear on how stuff like that works.
    PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

You don't need to worry.  It won't delete anything from iCloud or your new phone, it will only erase the data on the lost phone, and that will only happen if it ever goes online again.

  • Questions on "Find my iPhone" app

I see there are a numerous amount of threads on lost/stolen iphones.
My phone has been stolen and I have a few questions about tracking it that havent been answered so far.
(Note that my iphone did not have an internet data plan on it. I used it only with wi-fi in all / most of the places I used to go.)
1.)If the thief deletes teh 'find my iphone' app, will I still be able to track it? (They would have been able to access the phone when it was stolen since I did not have a password on it. I am thinking they may have deleted this app first.)
2.)If they turn off the location services, then I won't be able to track them either right? (This is a possibility, but I find it hard to believe that they will use the iphone without connecting it to the net.)
3.)I set a remote lock on the phone. I beleieve if the password is entered wrong 10 times the phone will wipe. Will I still be able to track it afetr ot has been wiped like this? (If I choose to wipe it from www.icloud.com then I won't be able to track it any longer.)
4.)How easy is it to crack the password I set? I don't mean by guessing. I mean, can they take the phone to an 'iphone blackmarket specialist' who can bypass / reset the remote lock I put on it?
5.) How long does the find my iphone app keep a log of the iphone? If I do not locate it, and log into www.icloud.com one year later to see if i can find it now, would I still see it on 'my devices?" Or will it dissappear due to inactivity?
Getting an iphone stolen is not very nice. It's crushing. Investigate in a number of location based apps now.
    Thanks

The reality is this, if you have not located your phone by now, you can most likely kiss it good-by. Most thieves are well aware that when they steal an iPhone, to immediatelly turn the phone off...this defeats Find My Phone. Once off, they restore it as a new device in iTunes and slap it on eBay or Craigslist.
Change all the passwords you ever used on the phone: email, iTunes, etc. Report to the police & your carrier.

  • Re: How can I restore DELETED APPS :- icloud, facebook, twitter on my iPhone 4S?(THE APPS IN QUESTION CAME WITH MY iPhone I DID NOT PURCHASE THEM).These apps are dimmed and not responsive on my phone. I cannot back up to icloud.

Little fingers have deleted the above mentioned apps!
THE APPS IN QUESTION CAME WITH MY iPHONE.
    I DID NOT PURCHASE THEM!
HOW CAN I RESTORE THEM, THEY ARE NOT LISTED IN THE APP STORE????

    Hey Clyde71,
Thanks for the question. From your description, it sounds like various Account Settings have been greyed out in your Settings application (iCloud, Facebook, Twitter). The cause for these being greyed out is a restriction setup on your iPhone. You'll probably see that Restrictions are turned "On" in Settings > General.
You'll want to disable the restriction "Allow Changes: Accounts". For more information on restrictions, see this article:

Icloud or itunes backup, only backs up app data, not the app itself.
so if you restore as new, then there is no app data on your phone, you start out new...

  • Ask your question.I installed the app" Find my phone for my Ipad. But I also installed that app on my Iphone. but the Iphone app still just shows where my Ipad is located and not the phone, how can I get then both to show location?

I installed the App" find my Iphone on my Ipad.. its working well.
But I also need to be able to track my Iphone if lost... I also have the app on my Iphone but when I click on it to find my phone it is showing me where my Ipad is... how can I get it to show my Iphone also? the chances of me losing my Ipad are less then my Iphone. But I need to be able to trac both.

How was your wife using the Find My iPhone app from a Samsung phone? But, that question aside, your wife should educate herself on how GPS works, especially on a cell phone. GPS signals can be interfered with by trees, buildings, clouds. Off by several miles would be unusual, though.
If your wife is tracking your cell phone and not believing what you tell her, you may want to consider counseling as there are some very serious issues that go way beyond the technology.
    Best of luck.

  • Basic questions on iPhone apps. Please help!

Hey I have a few semi-basic questions about iPhone apps. If you know the answers to any of them please respond as it would help me ton. Even if you dont know the exact answer, it'll help me with any input. Trapster is a good example of what im looking for because it uses a map and it receives/sends small amounts of data constantly.
    1) How much on average does it cost to hire a group of people to code an app for you. Specifically, how much do you think the app Trapster took to program? Are there any specific other apps you know how much it took to code? I need estimates, because I have nothing. A number like 50,000 would help a ton more other then saying "it depends" .....
    2) Apps like Trapster, send and receive small amounts of data all the time? What controls all of this data? Im guessing a server. But what are the server's specs? How many? Price per month?
    3) With 3.0 SDK now out, you are now allowed to implement google maps into 3rd party applications. Now I know you cannot use it for turn-by-turn navigation. But can you still use the directions feature already on google maps? Can you still use the search feature to search for a restaurant as well? Or maybe you can just see the map and thats it. Does anyone know exactly what you can use with google maps or know where there is more information? Ive tried everywhere.
    4) Just tell me if this is correct: You can add advertisements into your app. On average, for every 1000 times your app gets opened, you get about 1.00-2.00. So if your app gets opened 2,000,000 times you get $2,000 from advertising if you get 1.00/1000. Is that accurate as an average?
    5) Since 3.0 now supports push notifications, would you be able to have anything at all running in the backround? For example, on trapster, if you approach a red light camera, the app beeps. With 3.0, if you are on the home screen and approaching the camera, is there a way of getting the iphone to beep even though your just on the iphones main screen or any other screen? Im guessing not because in order to receive the push the iphone needs to know your current location and the location of the camera, which is why the app would need to be running. Incase im wrong is there a way of doing this?
    6) If an app is free and does not do advertising, does it make any money? If so how?
    Thanks!

    >"If an app is free and does not do advertising, does it make any money? If so how?"
    Of course.
It's called 'reputation earned'. You negotiate your future based on attention from something (a free app?) that amazes the known world. Could be a book deal after you spend your young/old life crossing the divide - could be a marriage proposal that brings great wealth - could be a cabinet position with a station in a foreign tax haven.
    Use your imagination.
As for cost, pull a number out of your hat and then double it...then double it again. Same goes for time, staff and delays.
Ad-ware is so yesterday. Find something more current to scrape off your shoe

  • Question Regarding "Find My iPhone" App (Used On Macbook Pro)

    Here's what I lost:
    - iPod Touch 8BG (I got the iPod in August of 2009)
    - The iPod SHOULD be in my house.
Here's what I'm trying to find my iPod with:
    - "Find My iPhone" App on iTunes
    - MacBook Pro (Mac OS X Version 10.5.8) My laptop was also purchased in August of 2009, and my software is up to date.
Here's my main question: Is it possible to use the "Find My iPhone" App on my computer to help me find my missing iPod if I DO NOT have the "Find My iPhone" App on my iPod? I would assume that the answer to my question would be "no", but I'm not very familiar with apps.

You need to pay to update the OSX on your Mac.
    Mountain Lion (OSX 10.7.x) requires
    General Requirements
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
    Supported Models
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Also since you said you have iPod Touch 8BG (I got the iPod in August of 2009), that iPod is a 2G iPod touch that does not Support iCloud. However, if you previously subscribed to the paid MobileMe you might be able to find it but since you can;t log into iCloud you can't do that.
Sorry but you are out of luck finding your 2G iPod except the old fashioned way, lokk for it,.

  • Ipod Lost/stolen question Find Iphone App

My son has had his ipod stolen and I have a question I can not find an answer to in the discussion pages. On his Ipod I have the wifi turned on and ask to join networks turned off. The find my Iphone app does work on his Ipod, but my question is this will the Ipod connect to an open network that it has never seen before with out being told to connect to the network? My son has a passcode on the screen so it is locked. I have also placed it into lost mode from the find my Iphone App. So now I am kinda just waiting for it to go online so the app will locate it. Am I just wasting my time waiting or will the Ipod auto connect to a network by itself?
    Eric

    Correct
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it.
    - Apple will do nothing
Reporting a lost or stolen Apple product
    - iOS: How to find the serial number, IMEI, MEID, CDN, and ICCID number

  • Tom Tom iPhone mount charger question + Article about Tom Tom app details

    Hello, all.
First off, here's a handy article posted two days ago from PC World explaining quite a bit more about the Tom Tom iPhone app straight from the horse's mouth so to speak:
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/167906/tomtomforiphone.html
The article states that the Car Kit's "power cable plugs into your car's accessory jack or any USB power source and charges your iPhone while docked."
Here's my question: Since there's no release date in sight for the app and Car Kit, I want to buy a car charger for my iPhone. Would the smartest thing be to buy a charger whose USB cord is separate from the cigarette lighter adapter? That way, buying a charger now won't be a complete waste of money since I could still use the adapter with the Car Kit when it comes out. If I'm understanding that excerpt correctly, it sounds like the Car Kit won't include a built-in cigarette lighter adapter connected to the mounting dock.
Maybe it's too soon to know for sure since the details seem sketchy but I want to get a car charger in the meantime but will hold off if it turns out it will be useless once the Car Kit comes out. Thanks.

Not that I know of but you can opt in for updates at the [TomTom for iPhone|http://iphone.tomtom.com> page..

  • Question regarding business plans for an iphone app

Hi everyone, please forgive me for possibly posting this in the wrong area.
I have a couple of questions I'd like to have clarified regarding the service agreements for development of iphone apps.
I need to approach management at work, with an explanation/answer of how the royalty process works in regards to providing a free application to access a service we charge for.
If we develop an app, put it on the iphone store for free, but the users need to pay a monthly subscription service to fully use the program (via our website which uses paypay), does Apple take, or want a cut in the tiny profits, from having the program hosted for free in the app store?
    This is the current scenario:
Clients sign up for a 'lite' type of usage of the site/service. If they want more features, they then use PayPal to update their subscription.
I guess two questions now... Firstly, can you use PayPal for monthly subscriptions in Apps?
Secondly, Would Apple want, or be authorised to take a cut on a free app, that is assisting in income for a company.
Are there 3rd party or custom agreements made? What if the app was charged for in the first place? Would that cover everything, and the rest of the income 'our business only'?
I hope this isn't too complicated or confusing, but I would like to be pointed in the direction of some good documentation with values and figures to back up the answer.
    Thanks.
    Steve

    Hi Allan,
I tried called them. The girl I spoke to was hard to understand, and I'm not sure if she understood me correctly anyway.
She basically said "no" about Apple wanting a cut, however I will wait and see other's thoughts on here.

You can use the File Sharing feature at the bottom of the iTunes Apps pane when you connect to iTunes. Transfer the documents to your computer, and from there to your iPhone.
See pages 44-45 of the iPad iOS4.3 User Guide
Or page 59 of the iPhone iOS4 User Guide
