[iPhone] How to design a newspaper app?

Hello,
I have been asked to develop a kind of "newspaper" app for the iPhone, such as the NY Times app for example (http://www.nytimes.com/services/mobile/iphone.html).
I wonder how this kind of app is designed and how it is linked to the "main" website. Technically speaking, how would you display a list of articles of the sport section for instance? HTML parsing? RSS based? And then when you choose an article in that list, would it be a UIWebview displaying the actual article of the main website?

Why not build the parent 'news' website to detect a mobile interface and present a formatted view of existing content, instead of reformatting the content for two platforms.
Write once...use twice (or more).
If you must build yet-another-newsreader, I'd consider RSS.

My iphone and my pc both broke around the same time (unrelated incidents!). My iphone was sent away for repair and returned working but set to factory default no apps etc, I've now got a new pc too. How do I access the apps / audiobooks that I had downloaded before? Does this situation mean I've lost them as they weren't backed up anywhere? (Maybe I've learnt the hard way )

How to design a flex app so that it loads fast

hi,
i was gonna make a large CRM+ERP app in flex and was worried
it would take a long time to load as even the smallest examples on
various sites take quite a bit of time to load (quite a lot more
than simple flash apps, why ??).
i was thinking of breaking each component into individual swf
but was afraid that it might make them pretty stand alone and not
allow accesing their properties etc.
what would be the simple and effective way to do this.
can anyone point me to any large app developed in flex 2, i
am also thinking of developing a Project Management app based on
netoffice after this app. only if this gets developed succesfully
coz macromedia used to have this great ability to make its flash
look like the ultimate tool even when it had major short comings
(one of them printing still exists in flex)

thanks man that was so much help. hope they update it for
flex 2.
also couple of queries.
1.) does the form container carry the same overhead as other
containers. (if not flex builder shud have stuff like auto layout
and then when you are happy with layout you can set stuff to
absolute layout and it auto fills widths, heights, x and y)
2.) if i create components thru code as like in a for loop
load time wud be same for 2 or 100 or 10000 components right.
3.) another question similar to 2 is that if i dont use any
outside controls load times shud be almost same for small app and
large apps since all i am doing create instances of already
existing control classes.
4.) if i break down my app into components and then load them
as needed wud it be same as creating each as a swf and loading
them.
5.) is layout using self written code faster than auto
layout. (for simpler forms)
6.) is creating controls via AS faster than creating them
mxml.
7.) is there any pauserefresh / pauselayout for when you want
to add a lot of stuff and dont want to do auto refreshes.

How to design an iPhone app that uses both Portrait and Landscape in Flash CS6

So I have created an App that has a different menu when it is held portrait, but changes when held landscape. I can get the navigation to work, However I am unsure how to design landscape pages inside Flash?
My stage is set to the standard 640x960 air for iOS, which gives me perfect portrait pages, But when I tilt my phone to landscape the screen obviously changes, and it looks weird. Im hoping someone can tell me how i can get this view inside Flash, while still having the portrait screens too?
I want to have both Portrait and Landscape in the same app, and am currently so confused how I can design this inside flash?
I hope this makes sense, and that someone could throw some help my way!

you can change the display depending on stage orientation but it doesn't make sense to "..swap the stage orientation between screens".
to change the display, use a StageOrientationEvent.ORIENTATION_CHANGE event and listener:

You are correct. There is no other way to recover this material, and yes it would have been a good idea to backup the iPhone prior to the restore. Remember that a restore to a previous date deletes everything on the device and puts it back to the state of things on the date you choose. The texts and contacts would be gone. Did you possibly sync the contacts with a supported application on the computer? That is the only other way to recover contacts. They are designed to be synced with a supported application on the computer, or with a cloud service such as iCloud, Google or Yahoo.

How are the third party apps for the iPhone?

Being a long time Palm user, then moved to BlackBerry I watched the quality of third party apps really plummet due to a more restrictive development agreement.
Now considering an iPhone, I'm curious about how healthy the 3rd party app community is for iPhone, something I miss from my Palm days. From what I've heard, the development for iPhone applications is even more restrictive than for BlackBerries.
Anyone that wouldn't mind addressing one or all of these questions for me from their own experience, would be greatly appreciated.
1) Do you use third party applications on your iPhone, or do you find the native Apple software to be sufficient?
2) Are there alot of different choices for utilities, or do you find yourself pigeonholed to 1-2 programs.
3) Would you say that the third party apps are "mature" that is stable, follow similar flow/integration with the phone and designed in an intuitive way?
Again thanks for anyone that chooses to help me with this. I was really disappointed with the apps available for the Blackberry. At $15-$25 dollars each, I was usually let down by the quality and selection and overall experience.

The native software is excellent and I also have apps to fill in for things not available as part of the out of the box iPhone.

If you go to the app store and browse, you'll find lots of different utilities. In some cases, there are a dozen different options that do the same basic thing and in other cases there are a couple.

Some apps are well done and others aren't. Since they are developed independently, there is variability. The apps I use most frequently seem pretty stable. It all depends on your needs.

You would have to create the ringtones.
Google will find several way to do this.
You cannot buy ready made ringtones from your computer.

When you tried syncing, did you connect the phone, then click on the phone icon near the top left of iTunes, then click on Apps under Settings in the sidebar, then find the app in question and click the Install button beside it before clicking Sync at the bottom right?

How Do I Delete An App from My iPhone When the App does not appear on my PC

I downloaded an app directly to my iphone. I want to delete the app. Usually I simply sync to my PC, and then delete the app from itunes and it is gone when I re-sync.
In this case the app doesn't show on the list of apps you can check or uncheck to show or not show on the iphone when syncing. Also in itunes, when I click on Devices, and then content, Apps isn't one of the choices in the drop down menu.
