IPhone's Flash Storage = RAM or Hard Drive

Is the iPhone's flash storage used as RAM or only as external storage and music, apps, etc. are pulled into RAM for program execution?

Its used as storage only.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the ram and hard drive on the new retina after purchase ?

hi i was wondering if it was possible to upgrade my macbook pro retina display to a bigger ram and hard drive or will i be stuck with 8 gb of ram and 256 gb hard drive?

Sorry to say, you're stuck with it.
If however, you just got your Retina, you have a 14 Day return/exchange in case you want something with more memory and a larger flash drive.
Here's a suggestion - you'll be fine with 8GB since most people are still running on 4GB of RAM.  Why not just buy an external drive and save your files there so you don't fill up your flash drive in your Retina.
    Again, just a suggestion.

    Hi Chefjeegar
Yes that screwdriver kit has the #00 phillips screwdriver that you need to access the RAM and hard drive. You'll also need the Torx driver to change the hard drive. http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-Computer-Technician-Precision-Torx/dp/B0000934GO/r ef=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348072554&sr=1-1
For a good explanation about RAM look at the page on OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/
In the UK Amazon or eBay might be your best bet for cheap RAM but read the description and reviews carefully. For a little more expensive but with a better warranty is Crucial UK http://www.crucial.com/uk/
A good resource for working on your MacBook is ifixit.com http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Core_2_Duo
Is your external hard drive formatted for Mac? To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Put the new drive in your MacBook, then format and partition the new drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer your OS back to the new drive.
Yes, you can put an SSD in the MacBook.

  • New RAM and hard drive won't connect to computer.  It's still making the beeping noise.  Any ideas?

My computer stopped working and I thought it was my RAM and hard drive so I bought a new one of each of these.  However, when I tried turning my computer back on after replacing them, it still made the beeping noise.  I am clueless.  Does anyone know what could be the cause and how to fix it.  Thanks!!

    What type of beeping noise?
What machine specs? What type of RAM and HDD?

    Hi Tommy,
Using install discs created for another computer is the problem. I suggest you get a stand alone install disc for Leopard and give that a try. I know it's a bummer since you have a perfectly good install disc but you can't take an install disc from a new computer and use it to update an older computer. As a matter of fact you would have problems using your install disc on the same type of computer if it didn't have the same build number. In the old days of Power Macs that wasn't an issue. You could take an install disc for one computer and update every Mac you owned. Sorry.

  • Will Logic Pro 9 run on a 2007 4GB ram, 320GB hard drive, Intel 2 duo 2ghz mac mini?

"Will Logic Pro 9 run on a 2007 4GB ram, 320GB hard drive, Intel 2 duo 2ghz mac mini?"
I am looking for the cheapest way possible to run Logic Pro 9 and will purchase a second hand mac mini if it will run the software.
    Thank you!

Yes it will.. I would recommend you use the combination of  Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and LPv9.1.5 (or 9.1.8 if you have to..) with that particular hardware to get the best performance out of it... I would not recommend running any OS X version higher than 10.6.8 as each new version of OS X from then onwards.. placed a bigger performance hit on the hardware... and frankly, less stability with LP9.
As to how well it will run on that hardware.. will more depend on the sort of loads you place on it.. depending on the type and content of the music you wish to compose... It will run and you should be able to create reasonable sized projects.. but again, it all depends on the plugins used.. the number of them... the number of tracks and so on... so to give a more precise answer is difficult.

  • Can I upload iphone photos to a portable external hard drive?

Hey guys, I am going on a 2 month back packing trip in Iceland this summer. I will basically be wilderness camping the entire time and am planning on taking a bunch of photos. I'm a iphoneographer so I can easily see myself taking upwards of 5000 photos on this trip.
My question is this, is there a mobile hard drive that will allow me to upload photos from my phone on to it in the wilderness? I have a bunch of external batteries so I don't see myself running out of charge but I stupidly bought an iPhone 5 with only 16 gbs and I know I'm gonna fill it up way too quickly.
I saw that morphy is going to release a case that adds 16 or 32 gb storage but I would love to try and get other options on the table too choose from.
    Thanks folks

I would reccomend, if possible, to bring a computer along. Due to there being no way to directly transfer to an external hard drive, a laptop would be your best bet.

  • Why is this Macbook pro not Upgradeable?( ram and Hard drive)

    Apple,
I am really disappointed in how your new Macbook Pro 15" is totally un-updateable! I have been a loyal consumer regarding apple products. Flexibility and scaleability is key with any technology. My issues is this, not everyone wants to farm out their data to ICLOUD in light of your new hard drive is not expandable or updatable
    http://www.zdnet.com/article/want-to-upgrade-that-retina-macbook-pro-tough-luck/
Apple why make a computer virtually un-upgradeable. As Operating systems advance, they will need more power, storage, and Ram to run.
I don't know how this product was  even approved for mass production.  Your not giving us options - You need to bring back updatable parts.
You are not sensitive to the needs of customer.
Could you please fix this !

  • Replaced Logic Board, RAM, and hard drive connecting wire, but Macbook Pro 15' (Mid 2010) now freezes and shuts down randomly

I have a mid 2010, Macbook Pro '15. Summer of 2012, it kept shutting down and making the three beeping noises, so I took it in for repair. I was told that my Logicboard needed to be replaced, so I replaced it, and took my Macbook abroad with me. Halfway through the summer, the three beeping noises resumed, and since I was abroad, I couldn't use my 90 day warranty and take it back for repair. By the time I returned to the US, my warranty ended, and I was told that the RAM actually needed to be replaced. So I replaced that.
In May of this year, my laptop wouldn't start and instead showed a folder with a question mark. I took it to repair and was told it was the hard drive wire that needed to be replaced, so I replaced that. Less than two weeks after, my Mac began freezing whenever I had a YouTube video or song playing- it made short, staticky sounds and then shut down. Now, it shuts down randomly even when I'm not playing videos or songs, and regardless of if it is running on battery or plugged in. Since I got my hard drive wire replaced, I've also noticed that the laptop takes an incredibly slow time to start up.
The last the Genius Bar technicians looked at my computer when replacing the harddrive wire, they hadn't said anything else was wrong with my laptop.
I've spent almost $1000 total fixing my macbook and am quite sick of going through this over and over again. Can anyone help me know what went wrong this time? (I have no apple care) Thank you in advance.

Check to see if you've any panic logs -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546.

  • RAM or Hard Drive failing  ... or both?

Early 2009 24” iMac, iMac model iMac9,1, Build 13F1066, 2.66 GHz, Intel Core Duo running with 2 x 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM (a matched pair installed 2 years ago to add RAM) running OS X 10.9.5. I have several USB and one Firewire external hard drives to hold iPhoto/iTunes and various back ups.
Of late it has had numerous and frequent odd errors. Mid-operation crashes, application crashes, inability to boot following a crash, apparent corruption of external hard drives which can now only be read (but not written to) etc. Fault reports were varied; some kernel panics some crashed threads e.g com.apple.main-thread. Disk Utility often unable to repair so re-format and re-install required.
Before effecting a repair I had to establish what was causing these seemingly unrelated issues.
SMART Utility first showed the hard drive as failing [item 5 - Reallocated Sector Count 0x0033 199 (threshold 140) Pre-fail, Update Always, Failed Never, Raw value 6 & item 196 Reallocated Event Count 0x0032 199 (threshold 199), Old age, Raw value 1]. However, I have successfully re-formatted it and it still shows this (which I presume is fine as the bad blocks are still present). Other drives it can report on were reporting ok.
That said, more recently it also now shows one of the USB connected external hard drives as Failed [item 184 - End-to-End Errors  0x0032 99 (threshold 99) Old age, Update Always, Failing Now, Raw Value 1].
Whilst researching what hard drive I could replace mine with (same manufacturer [WDC] to avoid heat sensor issues, larger [why not?], jumper settings to downspeed to 3Gb/s I thought I'd run an Apple Hardware Test (AHT).
So yesterday I ran an Apple Hardware Test. This showed one of the 2 RAM blocks in error (4MEM/9/40000000: 0xb8c03818). If I pulled them out one by one and once I’d worked out which one was reporting faulty the iMac operated OK the first time, if I used the good one alone. Using the faulty one I got the regular ‘horn’ as it couldn’t operate without workable RAM. With both in it still reported one as failed. It didn’t matter even if I swapped the good one between the two slots, the iMac would work but with only the faulty one in either slot it wouldn’t. There were no reports of Hard Drive issues?
I also ran the Rember app which reported a RAM error.
Interestingly after all this and even with the one working RAM in place it would eventually not boot so I am now booted from a USB connected carbon copy cloner back up. I presume this is because the failed RAM introduced corruption (again).
I have now replaced the 2 RAM blocks (good ol' Mr Memory FoC) and AHT and Rember report it as OK. Still  no HDD errors reported with AHT?
    Questions:
1/ Do I really have a hard drive issue or a RAM issue?
    2/ Or both?
3/ Is it possible that the RAM issue has caused the other reports and could it cause SMART Utility fault reports?
4/ Are SMART Utility faults 'latched' i.e. once triggered, they remain in place?
5/ Is there something I have missed?
6/ How can I be confident of identifying the core issue?
    Any thoughts, help, expertise appreciated.
    Mervyn
Can failed RAM really screw up external drive files, writing, etc?

With another system in the computer's hard drive along with the old one,
there is alot of stuff in there. If an archive and install procedure was done
and her old settings saved into the new system, the older one could be
    tossed; but ever so carefully.
Booting into the OSX installer disc#1 and use the Installer's own Disk
Utility version (found in menu below Installer, in main menu after booting)
can be helpful in doing some repairs to the hard drive; by chosing the
"repair disk" item in disk utility; you can run it more than once. [Also,
using repair disk permissions is helpful; this latter thing can be done
in the regular in computer OS as it is running the machine. Choose
Disk Utility in the Utilities folder, launch it, choose the Mac HD item
from left side menu, and run repair disk permissions. When it is done,
quit Disk Utility. Also, consider getting OnyX (free download online
from Titanium Software) and run the items in Automation monthly.
Repairing disk permissions before and after installing upgrades is a
good idea; and if this has not been done, issues can result.
And the hard drive may be getting really full, sluggish systems can
have too much in the drive and not enough free space. See how
much free space is in the hard drive by single clicking its icon and
use Get Info from in File in the main menubar. For troubleshooting
user account/permission issues, some people create a new user
account; that helps to tell if the main "admin" account has problems.
There is alot more to this; so see what you come up with and then
post back if you find anything new or if repairing permissions and/or
other things show promise. The extended warranty sounds good.

  • Iphone back up space on PC Hard Drive

Hi, just wondering how much space the back ups take on hard drive. That is, I have iPhone with approx 5GB videos, 3GB music, 2GB pictures and some applications (say 1GB for sake of simplicity). If I take back up say five times in five months, will it be 55GB on my hard disk or some different amount the way iTunes backs up? Not to mention, someof the data (eg music etc) does not change.

No iTunes content is included in the iPhone backup. Read through this document to see what is included in the iPhone backup & where this backup is stored on your computer:

  • How do I back up iPhone and apps to an external hard drive?

    Hi -
I have a very small internal hard drive in my good ol' G4, so I have my iTunes music library on a 160 GB external (I'm backing the library up to a second external).
I have such limited space on my internal that I want to back up my iPhone and my wife's iPhone to the 160 external, but I can't seem to figure out how. All the apps land in Users > (myaccount) > Music > iTunes > Mobile Applications. I'm familiar with the iTunes Preferences > Advanced function where you change the location of your music library, but I haven't been able to get this to work for iPhone apps.
Also, when I back up my wife's phone, any applications that I've downloaded directly to my phone and then later backed up are being loaded into her phone. How do I prevent this?
Thanks a lot for some help.

You can just copy the app files in the folder where they are stored and move them over.
If apps you downloaded are getting put on your wife's iPhone then it sounds like you only have one iTunes account for both of you. With your wife's iPhone connected go to the application tab and uncheck apps she doesn't want.

  • Late 2008 Macbook Unibody (Aluminum) 2.0 GHZ Ram and Hard Drive Upgrade Help

    Hello,
    I have a few questions:
-Is the max 8gb of ram and what would you recommend brand-wise?
-What is a great and cheap 1tb hard drive that will fit in this computer?
-What is the boot rom needed to ensure 8gb of ram will fit correctly?
    -Justin

    1. Yes, 8 GBs is the maximum. I would suggest purchasing from:
    OWC
    DataMem
    Crucial.com
    2. Toshiba and Hitachi make a 1 TB notebook drive that will fit.
    3. The Boot ROM really has nothing to do with it. Buy the right product, and it should work.
    Maximum Memory
8.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
