[iPhone SDK] Returning to my app from Mail app?

hi there,
is there a way to return to my app after i call Mail app to send an email? (just like it works when Safari calls Mail app)
thanks..

Yeah doubt it, since the phone only allows one program to be loaded at a time it unloads your program and loads the mail, be nice if you could just spawn the process, one thing may be to write your own message entry form and use that to send the email, this way when the users sends the email it returns to your app. i have not checked if this was possible yet but it's on my list of things to look into.

  • [iPhone SDK] Truncating NSDates ; Init NSDateComponents from a NSDate

In my application, I have to truncate some of the components of an NSDate, so I can do comparisons.
Basically I am initializing a new NSDate as NOW. So that gives me Minutes, Seconds, Sub-Seconds.
In my current application, I need to ZERO OUT the Seconds, Sub-Seconds.
For the Minutes, I need to evaluate the minutes. If it is after the 30 minute mark, I have to roll it back to 30. If it is between 0 and 29, I have to roll back to 0.
So I need truncate the time to 00 or 30 for the minutes (Day, Hours are not impacted, but the theory is the same if I need to truncate to the week, month, year)
I have been looking and can't find a NSDate truncation method, or other class that will do it for me.
On another forum, they directed me to the NSDateComponents class. Which I probably could use for what I am doing.
The problem I am running into with that class, is initializing it to a specific date (or even NOW directly).
Since on the iPhone I can't use NSCalendar most of the examples of extracting the different components of an NSDate are not available (since they seem to use the NSCalendar functions).
So I can't even brute force initialize the date directly.
The only way I have been able to do is is using a NSDateFormatter which is so overkill, I'll stick with my original method of doing it (which is ~slow~).
So anyone have any other ideas for my above situations?
Or if the Apple guys are reading this: Two things would be very helpfull.
-) A method on the NSDate that would truncate to a specific type (Year, Month, Week, Hour, Minute, Second, with an option to round up/down to a specific integer value)
-) A method on the NSDateComponents to initialize FROM an NSDate, or from NOW

All right, I did some research, and hopefully I've got it right. Here's how it would be done, and I'll tell you what I'm doing line by line:
    NSDate *date = [NSDate date];
    NSDateComponents *dateComponents = [[NSDateComponents alloc] init];
Creates a new date and new date components. The NSDate is set to now.
    dateComponents = [dateComponents components:NSYearCalendarUnit fromDate:date];
This sets the date components to the date components with the date that you specified's current year, I think, but I'm not sure. You can look up NSCalenderUnit and the components:fromDate: method for more information on it.

  • Problems building w/ Snow Leopard and iPhone SDK 3.0 Snow Leopard

Suddenly having problems building and codesigning after upgrading to Snow Leopard and iPhone SDK 3.0 Snow Leopard.
Profile set to Distribution, Device 2.2.1 Distribution, as has worked in the past.
The build fails with this error:

Any ideas? This is really strange.
The same error occurs when trying to build for Device - 3.0, and any other version it seems.
This is especially frustrating as I'm simply trying to update an app that I released before I upgraded.
I will love whoever helps me forever and ever.

Found the new SDK on the CD. Now I am running XCode 3.2.
I'm talking to myself now for the benefit of future readers.
On the Dev Center I see the note:
"Important: You will need to re-install the iPhone SDK for Snow Leopard if you plan on developing iPhone applications after upgrading your Mac to Snow Leopard and installing Xcode 3.2."
So I'm going to download and install the iPhone SDK 3.0 (Snow Leopard) from the SDK downloads area on the Dev Center page. This seems weird to me as it's 3.0... but I'm running 3.2 now... I guess this will just update my 3.2?
I also notice that when I run XCode 3.2 I don't have Simulator as an option anymore in my profiles.
Going to go ahead with the update now and see how it goes.

  • How do I open a .m4a file from Mail into Music app?

How do I open a .m4a file from Mail into Music app?
I mixed down a song from my band's latest session and saved it as a .m4a file (Apple AAC Audio format) and I e-mailed it to myself. Then on my phone I opened the e-mail message in Mail and held a long-press down on the attached .m4a file. But I do not see the option to open it up into the Music app. It only gives me the options of iMovie, WeChat, and USB Disk. Why would I want to open it up in those? It's a song. It should open up into the Music app so I can play it. What the heck?
Please don't tell me that I have to use iTunes to do this and sync my phone to my computer, because I *do not* want to add these songs to my iTunes library. They are *practice session tracks* that I want to listen to then delete later when we have new versions.
If there is no way to open them into the Music app, then is there a music player app I can get somewhere that will let me simply save audio files from Mail into it, and use it as a player for those songs? That's all I want to do.
The only reasonable workaround I have found so far is to save them as .mp4 audio files, which the iPhone thinks are movies, so it lets me save them into the camera roll as Videos.
Voice Memos would be acceptable as a place for them to be able to open into as well, but of course that's also not on the options list. Sigh.

    TJBUSMC1973 wrote:
You'll have to use iTunes, add it to your iTunes library, then sync it.  You can always delete it from your iTunes library later.
Why is that such an issue for you?
Why do people insist on replying to threads without even reading the original post? I explained it there already!
I don't have to use iTunes to save an image from Mail into my camera roll, or to save a PDF from Mail into iBooks. Why should I have to use iTunes to save a music file into Music app?
But I'll repeat it since evidently you can't be asked to read the original posts before spamming a thread with questions that have already been answered. I *do not* want to add these songs to my iTunes library.
My iTunes library is a sacred temple into which I only allow to enter the very best and highest-fidelity musical recordings of all time. I refuse to sully and soil my iTunes library with crappy practice mixdowns from my band, etc.
Want to know why? Because I like to be able to hit "shuffle all" on my iTunes library and know that something that will improve my existence will emanate forth from this amazing device that I have invested thousands of dollars into (yes, I count my cell phone plan amongst the expenses).
I shall not have the crappy burner mixdown tracks from my band's practice sessions come up every five songs (we generate TONS of these... literally hundreds... and they are all high-bitrate .m4a tracks in the 10-15 MB range). I let iTunes keep my music folder organized on my computer. It makes copies of everything being placed into it, and I don't want 159 GB of copies of burner tracks hiding like roaches throughout my temple. We don't name these files anything sensible (in fact the guy who mixes them down intentionally gives them random weird names) and they lack metadata. So there's no easy way to delete them back out of iTunes once they're in there. It's a huge pain; I used to do it, but I swore it off years ago and *I'm never going back!*
The REAL question is, why does Apple force me to have to use iTunes—the most convoluted, kludgy piece of bloatware ever to issue forth from Cupertino—to do something as simple as adding an MP3 from Mail into the Music app on my phone? Why can't there be something simple—something equivalent to the Camera Roll inside the Music app, not only for the files I want to save from Mail, but also for my Garage Band exports, not to mention all the exports from all the various synthesizer, drum machine, and recording apps I use on a daily basis in iOS?
It would be awfully nice to be able to play the songs I've recorded right in the Music app without having to go through the rigamarole of adding those files to my iTunes library, tagging them with metadata, syncing, etc. etc. yadda yadda yadda—just to delete them again as soon as I've synced so they don't pollute my computer's iTunes library!
I bought Apple for ease of use, not so I would be forced to jump through a million hoops just do to something that ought to take one tap to accomplish!  That's ridiculous!

  • Delay/sleep/wait in an iPhone SDK app?

I'm trying to get some numbers to count up on the screen of my iPhone, but I can't see any way of delaying the app.
I have a for loop that changes the figures on-screen from one value to another by individual increments, but when I run it, you only see the final figure because it runs so fast.
Is there a way of adding a delay in the for loop so that the numbers visibly change? I'd like to see 0 change to 1 change to 2 change to 3 etc. instead of, erm, just 3.
I thought of putting a second for loop in that counted up to, say, a million, but that's too fudgey for me. I'm sure there's a delay function in the iPhone SDK...

You can also do eg. [NSThread sleepForTimeInterval:5.0] to sleep for 5 seconds..

  • How to transfer emails from Mail onto iphone?

just got my iphone and having fun using it so far.
i am trying to get work out how Mail works on the iphone in terms of how it syncs with Mail on my imac.
i really want to load some old emails from Mail (on my imac) onto the iphone. i tried dragging them from Mail onto the iphone icon in itunes but it won't let me do that.
for example i deleted some emails on the iphone by mistake, yet they are still in my inbox on the imac and wish to transfer them back onto the iphone so i can read thme on the move.
is there a way to do so?

Email account mailboxes and messages are not included in the iTunes sync process and you cannot drag or transfer email from your computer to your iPhone or vice-versa.
The iPhone's Mail app is no different in this regard from using an email client on your computer.
If you want email account mailboxes and messages to be kept synchronized with the server with each email client used to access the account, you need an IMAP account, not a POP account. Either way there is no option to drag or transfer email from your computer to your iPhone or vice-versa just as it isn't possible to do the same between two email clients on your computer.

  • Numbers crashes when importing .xls from Mail app

    iPad w/iOS 4.2
Installed Numbers to view .xls files emailed to me
Numbers crashes while trying to import .xls from Mail attachment and Mail freezes when trying to view same .xls natively.
Here are the two processes I've tried:
    Process 1:
    1. Open Mail
    2. Press attachment icon until 'Quick Look' and 'Open in Numbers' appears
    3. Select 'Open in Numbers'
    4. Numbers opens and the large .XLS icon displays while 'importing spreadsheet' process bar moves to about 50%
    5. App crashes and returns to springboard
    Process 2:
    1. Open Mail
    2. Press attachment icon until 'Quick Look' and 'Open in Numbers' appears
    3. Select 'Quick Look'
    4. Native view app tries to open and quickly changes to large attachment icon with no 'Back' button or any way to return to Mail
    5. Push Home - returns to springboard
    6. Select Mail - still shows large attachment icon with no 'Back' button
    7. Reboot iPad to clear Mail freeze in order to view Mail again
Anyone have any idea what is wrong with Numbers or the native .xls viewer?
Note, the .xls is version Excel 97-2003.
    thx

No pics in this .xls - just tabs with data. I bought Numbers specifically to view only and it crashes after soft reboot, hard reboot, delete/re-install of app, etc.
I'm also seeing several of these same issues on this topic w/o answers. Has anyone called or seen Apple in person to help? One 'solution' was to delete app from iPad/iTunes and reinstall with older backup version. In my case I don't have a backup as it's a new iPad...
    Extremely frustrating.

  • We purchased a new iPad2 and registered it using a 'new' iCloud email/ID. We are unable to send email from the iPad and iPhone. The error is: Cannot send mail. The user name or password for iCloud is incorrect.

About ~20 hours later, this ended up solving itself. We can send email using the '.icloud' email from both the iPad and iPhone.  Advise would be 'wait' before you start seeking alteranatives like yahoo, hotmail, etc.  This definitely is a convenient way to keep all your 'cloud' information in a centralized place, including the common email...

What happens to the mail in my iMac after I delete it from my iPhone? Will it be deleted from my computer as well?

If they are both using the same iCloud ID (assuming you are running your mail from iCloud), then yes, the email will disappear from your Mac after you delete it from your phone and after your phone sycs with iCloud and your Mac syncs with iCloud.
I use a windows phone, but it works the same.

Yes, under the Settings for the store, you can turn off the auto download for purchases, that way if you purchase an app on another device it will not automatically download on that device.  You would need to do this on both your iPad and iPhone.

  • By backing up the iTunes Library via saving the iTunes folder on an external drive, is it also backing up all iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from your devices?

If I backup my iTunes Library by saving the iTunes folder on an external hard drive using the instructions contained in the link below, will it also back up all my iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from my devices? In other words, will it also create backups for the backups? Thank you.
Back up your iTunes library by copying it to an external drive
Furthermore, when it is time to restore the iTunes folder I copied to my external drive to a new iTunes program on my new computer, how will it merge the information once I plug in my iPad or iPhone to that new laptop to sync? If I did the iTunes library backup a couple months ago and I've added documents/music/pictures on my devices since then, what will happen when I try to sync it with the new laptop now working off of the iTunes library backup from a couple months ago since the information is no longer the same? Which information will dominate and thus be kept? Will it delete the new information/data/pictures/documents/music off of the devices since it is not on the iTunes program when it syncs?
Sorry for so many questions, but they are all related to backing up and restoring iTunes. I am not very tech savvy if you cannot tell

It would be a good idea to look into a bigger hard drive. They are not that expensive any more and can save a lot of headach. This is even more important if you are buying music from the iTunes music store. If you lost those files they are gone.
The point of having it on your PC and iPod is to have a backup. If the iPod fails, or you need to go back to the DVDs and find they are scratched, or just can not be read you have lost days of work converting and organizing all of those songs.
Or the iPod could hard drive could fail and then you will have to try to bring all of those files back from DVDs. You end up with a mess since some songs will probably be on multiple DVDs, have different names ect. Trying to reorganize it all can be a pain.

Changing your Apple ID to your current, working email address will not create another Apple ID, it will only change it to your working email address.

    Change here:
Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID: > View Apple ID > Country/Region.
You must have a verified billing address & be located in the country whose store you are trying to use.
