Iphone6 from iphone4S

I am running Windows 7 with iTunes 10.7.0.21. I am transitioning from an iPhone 4S (IOS 5.0.1) to the new Iphone6. I'm not so good at updating stuff but I did just back it up and sync the 4S in itunes which has only about 450mb of phone memory left. I do want to keep old phone for music and pics so prefer not to empty it. Just looking for some advice on best way to get the 6 setup and keep contacts, pics and music. I'm thinking just update itunes and plug in iphone6??? Could it really be that simple. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

All you would need to do is to back up your old iPhone with iTunes and then plug in your new iPhone in and restore it from that new back up. Check out the article below for more information.

Don't know what you mean by saying 'formatting laptop'. If you can't backup your iPhone 4 to iTunes, you're supposed to do a few things to make it:
Download and install the latest iTunes on your computer. You'd better download it from Apple official site
Launch iTunes, click Store menu to authorize the computer with your Apple ID;
Restart your iPhone 4 and try to connect it with your iTunes. If your iTunes recognize it and offer to set it up as a new device or restore, you should click set up as a new device. In the next step, you can see the option 'Back Up Now' to create a backup of your iPhone 4.
Besides, backing up iPhone 4 in iTunes and restore your iPhone 6 with the iPhone 4 iTunes backup to get the data, you can also backup your iPhone 4 to iCloud(tap Settings > iCloud > sign in with Apple ID > swipe iCloud Backup to ON and click Back Up Now) if your iPhone 4 can access a network. Later, on your iPhone 6, you can click Settings > iCloud > sign in with your Apple ID. Then tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings. After then, set your iPhone 6 as a new device and there will be a 'restore from iCloud' for you. Then you can choose to restore iPhone 6 with the iPhone 4 iCloud backup.
If you still can't restore your iPhone 6 from iPhone 4 iTunes backup or you don't want to restore iPhone 6 from iPhone 4 iCloud backup, then try the easier way: using mobiletrans. It helps you to copy contacts, messages, videos, photos, songs, and calendar directly from iPhone 4 to your iPhone 6.

you can download directly from the App Store or ITunes Store on your phone.

The apps can be redownloaded for free. The music you purchased from itunes can be transfered to itunes from the phone, just select transfer purchases in itunes by right clicking on Phone icon. Anything you put in itunes from a CD or other place needs to be manually put back in itunes.
Next time I strongly recommend backing up your HD so you don't have to go thru all these steps! The iphone isn't intended as a backup drive or storage device! if something goes wrong with it and your computer with no backup you're SOL!
