IPhoto '08 compresses my photos

I noticed this weekend that iPhoto 08 will automatically compress any photo that I make alterations to with the iPhoto 08 application by 50-70%. For example, I imported a 7 mb .jpeg file into iPhoto 08, adjusted the pic's temperature and then noticed the file had been compressed to 2.8 mb. I tried the same process with a 52 mb .tiff, and then noticed the .tiff had been compressed to 18 mb. I know for a fact that iPhoto 05 did not do this as I still have pictures from that application to compare. Does anybody welse have this problem? Has anybody solved this problem? Seems tragic to have an application unwillfully subtract information from your photos.

but I find it hard to believe that making alterations to a .jpeg automatically means you are going to have genration loss.
This is in the nature of jpegs. It's a compressed file format, every time you save it compresses more.
I didn;t have this problem with iPhoto 05
It's a while since I used v5, but it used the same system as every other version of iPhoto up to this.
or generation loss when I make alterations in Aperture.
Aperture works in a very different way - using sidecar files to note the changes which are then generated on the fly every time you open the image. (Which is one of the reasons it's a whole lot more expensive)
However, have you compared the size of an exported jpeg against an imported one?

Yes, you do this when you export the images from the Library.
    File -> Export
in the Size section, you don't need images larger than the frame size, so you can specify that and in the Jpeg Quality you can select the amount of compression used.

  • IPhoto 5 has better quality that iPhoto 6 when emailing photos?

How can I set up iPhoto 6 to use the same image quality as iPhoto 5 when emailing photos?
I have two iMacs, side by side, one is G5 with iPhoto 5, and another is Intel with iPhoto 6. When I use iPhoto 5 to email a photo, medium quality 640x480, it looks beautiful. It looks like a perfect replica of a high-res photo, just smaller, but very clear. But when I do the same with iPhoto 6, again medium quality, the photo looks terrible, the image is very poor, it is jagged around people's faces with apparent artifacts of higher jpeg compression -- whereas none of these artifacts are present when emailing from iPhoto 5.
The problem with iPhoto6 seems to be that it uses a higher jpg compression thus lowering the photo quality.
To illustrate, here is the photo emailed from iPhoto5:
    http://www.cinemaclock.com/iPhoto5.jpg (100kB)
and here is the SAME photo emailed the same way from iPhoto 6:
    http://www.cinemaclock.com/iPhoto6.jpg (36kB)
Interesting is that when I click to email from iPhoto6 it estimates the photo size to 122kB, the same estimation as in iPhoto5, but then iPhoto6 compresses it down to 36kB.
Question: How can I set up iPhoto 6 to email the same photo quality as iPhoto 5?
    iMac G5 + iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   iPhoto 5 vs. 6

I have the SAME problem!! Apple, please help how to correct the poor image quality?

  • How do I stop mail compressing my photos?

How do I stop mail compressing my photos? I have set 'Actual Size' in Mail and still the photos are compressed to thumbnail size.
    I'm using Mavericks 10.9.2 on a 2011 iMac.

The best way is to use the Contextual menu application PhotoTool CM to losslessly rotate the photos before importing into iPhoto. Or use Xee, a free image editor with lossless rotation capability.
If your camera has the auto rotate feature turn it off and then follow the suggestion above before importing. That will rid iPhoto of the modified version rotated to the correct orientation.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto library compression

I just deleted an event from iPhoto: deleted the event, deleted the slideshow that contained the images and emptied the trash. I then noticed that the library size was reduced by .9 gig yet, the folder with the original pics was 1.47 gig in size. I quit iPhoto and reopened, quit again and compared the library's file size to a backed up copy, pre-event deletion. The above numbers were right.
I then went to a few images and checked the file sizes. Same results as above, iPhoto's image is about 60% of the size of the original out of the camera (which is already compressed to some extent - Nikon D80 or a Canon G7).
I then went and exported a selection of images at "JPEG Quality Maximum". The exported images were 3% smaller in size than the images in iPhoto (extended photo info).
This obviously suggests iPhoto is taking a fairly aggressive compression approach to everything that it imports.
All of this tells me iPhoto does not keep the original pics and there is no way of getting the least compressed photo out of iPhoto or back to the original which came out of the camera. Fortunately, I use iPhoto for slideshows only and keep all the originals in folders. But for those using iPhoto as their only photo app, this has negative consequences.
    Am I missing something here?

It does not - it does a straight bit by bit copy of imported photos

Select a photo and export (file menu ==> export) with JPEG quality set to maximum and file size set to original

    Yes - see above

  • Compressing of photo files

When uploading images from a camera into iphoto, how can I compress large photo files that take up too much space?
    Thank you for your help.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
If your photos are too large change the settings on your camera to take photos at a lower quality. But remember that you will be reducing the quality of the images.
Other than that, you will need to edit the photos in a photo editor prior to importing to iPhoto.
If disk space is an issue, you know that you can run an entire Library from an external disk?

Have you upgraded to iPhoto 9.6 for compatibility with Yosemite? If not, try that first.
It looks like iPhoto has lost the connection between the thumbnails and the original image files.
This can be caused by a corrupted iPhoto library, or the originals have been deleted or moved.
Try first to rebuild your iPhoto Library:
If you do not have a current backup of the iPhoto library, make a copy of the library, but do not overwrite any previous backup.
Launch iPhoto with the ⌥⌘-key combination (option-command) held down.
Select "rebuild" from the first aid panel.  This may take a while for a large library.
Can you now see your photos again?
If not, rebuild the library with iPhoto Library manager as described by Old Toad:            Re: iphoto crashed

  • How can i delete the masters of iPhoto without losing my photos

Mac Book Pro (Mid 2012) 13 inches
256 Solid State Start up Insert in DVD Drive
1T Hard Drive in reg slot
    16 GB Ram
    Mavericks 10.9.4
    iphoto 9.5.1
I am currently keeping my iPhoto library on my 256 SS Main Drive of my MacBook Pro.
How can I delete the masters of iPhoto without losing my photos in the main iPhoto display library and all their masters and edits.
I take loads of photos and import them and then will keep only 5% of the ones that I import.  As a result I have a masters folder of over 50GB and actual photos that take up less that 5GD.  Is it possible to delete the master folder without losing all the photos and without having to pain stakingly go through every folder and pick out from literally hundreds the ones that i kept and edited.  How do I reduce the size of the masters just down to the ones that I have kept and not every single photo and video that I imported in the history of my iPhoto experience.
If I delete the master folder will all the photos and their edits be deleted.
If so, is there a way to just delete the masters that are no longer in the iPhoto library, while keeping the masters and edits of the ones that I clearly want to keep because they are the ones that I did keep.
Why do they keep the masters of photos that I clearly deleted and emptied the trash on.
I like to maximize space and this would help a lot to clear up for me.  Thank you.

All the 5000 photos that reappeared after repair today were from my canada mega event, but for some reason it did not do it for all the other mega events.  It is a start but not complete.
Try the rebuild to recover more lost photos.
If "rebuild" with iPhoto does not recover more lost photos, rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager as described by Old Toad in this thread, but rebuilding with iPhoto Library manager will not recover your projects like cards, bilks, slideshows.
Re: iPhoto glitch with retained masters https://discussions.apple.com/message/26354337#26354337
Mostly the way I organize all my photos is that I make a folder for each country I visit.  i.e. New Zealand Folder, Canada Folder, India Folder; and at the same time, any photos that I import I delete directly from new imports and just keep the ones i want and then i go up to events and move the latest imported event into a mega event for that country and so they all get joined in a sense.
As a workaround, merge the events right after importing, before you start deleting photos.  And empty the trash always before merging projects.
You might consider to use albums instead of events for your country lists.   I simply use the events as basic containers. One event for each day of shooting photos. I found, that smart albums and searches are quicker in iPhoto and Aperture, if the events are smaller, also browsing is easier, if the events are not so large.
You can merge albums and remove photos from albums without the problems mentioned above.

That is not possible - PhotoStream has no organizational capability - no albums or other organization
With the correct software versions You can import from PS into an iPhoto event on your Mac either automatically (by setting the iPhoto preference to do that) or manually and then you can add the photos ot an iPhoto album and sync to Apple TV

Do you mean from a Shared Stream or My Photo Stream?
In iPhoto on your iPhone, iPad you create slideshow projects by selecting photos and then sharing them as a new slideshow. http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkbc26e276
You can publish your slideshow in iCloud:  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2333

  • Mail and iPhoto Problems with sending photos.

Mail and iPhoto Problems with sending photos.
I have this problem that started a while ago and seems to be getting worse.
    Here are the different scenarios.
-If I try to share a photo to email within iPhoto, it will insert the image file name in the mail message, but no image icon or opened image. In iPhoto Preferences under General I have chosen to use Email Photos using Mail.
-If I choose to use iPhoto to send the photo, it will compose the message and the photo is viewable. If I send the message i can view the photo within the email I sent to myself. Nothing happens when I double click on the photo in the Mail message. Nothing happens when i control click on the photo in the mail message. Nothing happens when I try to drag the photo to the desktop from the mail message. When I try to save attachments from the email and choose a place to save it, the save button is grayed out and it cannot be saved. When I check the mail message it says there is an attachemnt but there is no file size listed.
-If I use the stationary within Mail app I cannot drag a photo into the placeholder, I get a circle with a line through it symbol when I try. It happens if I try to drag a photo from the desktop or from the media browser within Mail app.
-If I drag the photo to the desktop from iPhoto, I can double click it on the desktop and it will open in Preview.
-If I then control click on the same photo on the desktop and scroll to share/email, the generic photo icon will be inserted in the mail message. If i double click the photo icon in the mail message  I get a message it can't be opened because it is empty.
-If I drag that same image to the mail message body the same thing happens.
-If I send that email to someone they cannot open the image file.
    What I can do:
    - I can drag that same image file on the desktop to my dropbox folder and  it will upload. From there I can go on my iPad and download the photo and send it through email just fine.
-I can open the same image file on my desktop in Preview, I can copy and paste it into a mail message and the image will be viewable in the mail message by me and by the recipient.
-I can drag that same image on the desktop to my safari browser window and it will be viewable in the page. i can then copy and paste that image into a mail message and it is viewable in the message.  I can then send that email message to myself and i can control click on the image and get all my options. It also shows as an attachment with the size of the image file in the mail message.
I can send that message to someone and they can see the photo and open it fine.
-If I send that same email to me I can see the photo within the mail.  If I then drag that photo to the desktop I cannot use it again to put in an email as the same problem happens again.
I have tried all scenarios in my user account, another users account and in a guest account. The same happens in all. I am guessing because of this it is not a corrupt preference file, unless all of the preference files are corrupt. The guest user account I added a new email account so it was brand new and still had the problem.
I am stumped, all and any help is appreciated.

Another problem that may be related….
I have Snapz Pro. I used to be able to save the snaps to my desktop or a folder. Now when I take a screenshot and try to save the file to my desktop or a folder on my desktop I get this message  "Files cannot be created in the selected location. You do not have permission to write to the selected location.   Please choose a different location."  I have found that i can only save the file to the clipboard.   I have repaired permissions many times and still I have this problem.

  • IPhoto 9.6 upgrade photos gone only "old master"

I was forced to upgrade to iPhoto 9.6 when I upgraded to Yosemite. Now when I open iPhoto, all of my photos are gone. I know they are not completely gone, because I was able to find them when I opened package contents. However, everything is not under "old".
I had my library stored on an external hard drive (1TB) and I have 223GB of photos. When I click on the library it still shows that amount. I held down "option" when I opened iPhoto and tried to redirect it to my library, but only the "Library.iPhoto" showed up and I have a feeling all of my pictures are in the "Library6.iPhoto".
I tried holding command and option to rebuild the thumbnails and then rebuild the library, but nothing happened.
Has anyone found a solution to this?
I do have a time machine connected to my computer, but I am not sure what good it will do if this is a forced update by Yosemite. I'm stuck.
