IPhoto 11 sometimes fails to delete originals

If I delete a large number of pictures in iPhoto 11 (drag them to the trash) they should be moved to the operating system's trash when the iPhoto trash is emptied, and then they should really disappear from the hard drive when the OS's trash is emptied. You can check what files are still out there by looking in the "Previews" and "Masters" folders. Sometimes -- and especially when I have deleted a large number of pics, like 100 or more -- the originals don't go away. They are still there in the Masters folder. If you work with Pentax raw files as I do and plan to throw away 95% your hard disk will fill up fast!
I discussed this problem with the guy at the local Genius Bar and he agrees it sounds like a software bug.

As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Make sure you've got no other processes holding onto it (Windows Explorer, for instance) and that you've closed any streams involved with the file. If that fails, try calling System.gc() just before deleting the file. This is a workaround for a bug in certain JVMs on Windows machines

  • IPhone sometimes won't delete all the photos after I import into iPhoto

Every so often, my iPhone 3GS won't delete some photos after importing into iPhoto and choosing "delete originals." It deletes most of the originals but strangely keeps a certain number around. My basic routine is to "Import All" and then "Delete Originals." This works 98% of the time, but sometimes the iPhone just gets hung up and won't delete the originals until I manually do it from the iPhone itself.

I was looking further into this and I found out that on my Macbook Pro's System Preferences. In the iCloud settings, the "Photos" setting was checked and in the Options next to that, the "My Photo Stream" and "Photo Sharing" was also checked.
I think this was the main problem. After I used iTunes to sync with the photos maybe there was some cache settings or something residual left on the iPhone which let to it being continuously restoring.
This is the fix which I used. It is fine now.
Check in System Preferences for - iCloud >> Photos is unchecked.
Check in System Preferences for - iCloud >> Photos >> Options >> "My Photo Stream" and "Photo Sharing" is unchecked.
Temporarily delete account for iCloud settings on iOS device - Settings >> iCloud (This didn't affect my main iCloud account only deleted my information on the device)
    Re-sync iOS device with iTunes.
Set up your iCloud account on iOS device again.
Hope this helps for anyone having this problem.

  • Imported photos, transferred some photos to new album, deleted originals, ones in album are gone. How do I retreive them?

Imported photos, transferred some photos to new album, deleted originals, ones in album are gone. How do I retreive them?

Check the iPhoto trash - if they are there select them and right click and restore to library
If they are not there then they are gone
You really should take the time to learn how to use iPhoto - photos exist only in one place  - in your events - albums, keepsakes, etc are just pointers to the actual photos in the event - deleting from an album does just that - deletes from the album - deleting from an event removes the photo and therefore all albums, keepsakes, etc
watch the videos as a starter - iPhoto help menu ==> iPhoto help and watch the video
also more details (for a previous version so some menu items are in different places but the concept is the same) - and it would be a worthwhile investment of time to take the iphoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/ - they are very helpful and will save you a lot of time and frustration.

  • Delete Originals after Import

When I import into iPhoto - once the import is completed, it asks if I want to delete the Originals (which I generally do!).
Does Aperture have the same feature - and if so - where ('cause I can't find it!).
    Thanks.

Supposedly, but people here have reported that 2.0 doesn't delete originals off the card, even when you tell it to.
Frankly, my best advice is to not ever do this. Just manually format in the card when you use it. You'll have fewer issues this way (the camera is the only thing that TRULY knows what format it wants to use), and you have a backup if something should go wrong -- until you erase the card in the camera. If you ever have a situation where an import goes wrong and then the importing app does it anyway (I had this happen with iPhoto a few years back and lost some images), you'll NEVER have your importing app delete images automatically again.

  • Deleting originals

I've searched the forum to find an answer to my question and it seems like I'm not the only one.
So I was wondering if someone knows how to delete originals after you've edited pictures in iPhoto. I only rotate pictures, and it's very annoying that it takes up twice the space.
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The only way to do that without damaging the library is to export the rotated version to the desktop, reimport and then delete the first version from within iPhoto. OR, rotate them before importing with an application like QuickImage which is a contextual menu application. You can preview and do some minimal editng on images by Control-clicking on them. Then import to iPhoto.

  • IPhoto library upgrade failed, one third of the photos lost, but the library works as normal. No corruption.

Hello! I recently replaced my tragically crashed Macbook Pro 2008 with a newer model and transferred my volumous iphoto library of 20 000+ photos to my new machine. To be able to use my iphoto '08 library with Aperture I had to upgrade the library in the iphoto '11 version. I left the computer on during the day, and when I got back it seemed to work fine. I browsed my library in Aperture and could see all the thumbnails, but looking closer I noticed a small yellow warning triangle with an arrow in the corner of some pictures. Turns out all pictures from before ~2010 are lost! When I wiev the photos I see nothing but the infinite black of the data void.
Here's how I've tried to fix the problem:
    1. Opening the iPhoto Library package in Finder. All the folders for the earlier dates are there, but they are empty. I notice no incorrect or impossible dating, which seemed to be a common problem among users who's libraries where corrupted during the upgrade process.
    2. Rebuilding the iphoto library in iphoto. No effect.
    3. Recovering the iphoto library from my Time Machine Backup. SInce my old hard drive was just 200 GB, I stored all pictures older than one year on my external hard drive (note that about half of those pictures were successfully imported/upgraded). Both the internal and the external hard drive where backed up using Time Machine on a NAS from Seagate (Black Armor 110, 3TB). I was able to access backed up files on my external drive through Time Machine on my old computer, but since it is now rendered unbootable I tried using Migration Assistant to let my new computer inherit the old backup. However, I could not find the backup of the external drive in Migration Assistant, just my old internal drive. When I tried to access the backup volume on my NAS through Finder it didn't show up (I could find it that way on my old computer).
    4. Googling "iPhoto library upgrade failed", or "Inheriting Time Machine backup of external drive", and similarily desperately specific phrases - Nothing useful. Other people seems to have had problems with corrupt Libraries, but I'm not sure that's the case here.
My pictures must exist somewhere on my computer and in a backup on my NAS. I just can't find them! Do anyone have a clue to what may have gone wrong? I'm afraid the computer might have gone to sleep during the upgrade, because I didn't thinkabout adjusting the power saving settings before starting it. But since pictures 1-8000-something are missing, it doesn't seem to have worked properly during the whole beginning of the upgrade, not just during the middle. As I knew I had a backup of the library I didn't worry about upgrading the single functional copy. From now on I will think thrice before doing anything as serious as this.
I am eternally grateful for any answers that might help me recovering my photos!
    //Teodor Nilson

      b) I split up my photo collection into two iphoto libraries. One for the new photos stored on my internal HD            and one for photos older than one year stored on my external HD
And exactly How did you Split up your iPhoto library?
    c) I used Migration Assistant in an attempt to access the Time Machine backup of my old MBP from my new      MBP (by inheriting the backup). When I made my backups, I made sure Time Machine included the external      HD. But Migration Assistant could only find the backup of my Internal HD with the library of new photos!
    And again
You should not use Migration assistant on an iPhoto library - it generally does not work
    and
         d)   When signing in and mounting the NAS in Finder, I used to be able to see a Time Machine backup      folder/icon. Now I was unable to locate it.
I believe you are using your NAS for your Time Machine backup. If your Time Machine backup and/or your iPhoto library is on a NAS you will have problems - both need to be on Mac formatted volumes - the least troublsome is a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Manually preparing a new disk for Time Machine
If you want to erase a disk before using it with Time Machine, follow these steps:
Open Disk Utility (located in the Utilities folder).
Connect the disk if it isn't already attached.
In the left side of the Disk Utility window, select the disk you want to use with Time Machine.
Optional: If you want to partition the disk, click the Partition tab and select a layout. Make sure "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" is selected in the Format menu for the partition that will be used for backups. Click Apply.
    Click the Erase tab.
Optional: If you want to securely erase the disk, click Security Options to configure, then click OK.
    Click Erase.
After erasing, open Time Machine preferences in System Preferences and configure as described in the section above.
Are the iPhoto libraries kept on an external drive formated Mac OS extended (journaled)? Or are they on the NAS? - If you are using the NAS for iPhoto and/or Time Machine that is the source of your problems

  • Failed to delete file after processing FTP

Failed to delete file after processing. The FTP server returned the following error message: 'com.sap.ai i.adapter.file.ftp.FTPEx: 550 Unexpected reply code *.txt: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. '. For details, contact your FTP server vendor.
I got this error many times for the same interface. Not sure what is the reason for this.
Searched on internet go comments that this is because of FTP version!
    Please help

It is the "Msecs to Wait Before Modification Check" in the Sender Adapter that ensures this. It works like this: PI starts processing, finds a file, then waits the number of miliseconds specified and checks the file again to see if it has changed over the waiting period. If so, then it waits again to make sure the file is written completely. Only if no changes took place over the waiting period, it starts processing the file.
And the fact that your file was successfully processed at retry only confirms that it might have been still written to by the sender system. You can try comparing file's creation timestamp (in OS level) with its processing start time in PI - this could prove me right.

  • If I delete photos in "iPhoto" will those photos also delete in the application "Photos"

Hey guys! I was wondering if I delete photos in "iPhoto" will those photos also delete in the new application "Photos".
I transfered all my photos to "Photos" the second it came out, so I'd find it strange if I still needed "iPhoto"
    Thanks a lot!

No, they will not be deleted from Photos. The two libraries are totally independent of each other.
YEs, you can now delete the iPhoto Library, but if you want yo do this to gain disk space, you won't see much of a difference. Reason being that both Libraries merely point to the same image files on your disk via hard links.
For now, I would suggest moving the iPhoto Library to an external disk "just in case."

  • Cas Log Errors - Failed To Delete Directory

In most of the CAS logs on clients I see the error repeated:
Error: DeleteDirectory: - Failed to delete Directory with Error 0x00000003
Error: DeleteDirectory: - Failed to delete Directory C:\Windows\ccmcache\**** with Error 0x0000002
What is the cause of this? Looks like it is trying to delete a folder from the local client package cache?

The error code means the file cannot be found. The file may be already deleted. You need to open the cache folder and check. Normally, it is not an issue.

  • HT201317 Once photostream pictures are downloaded onto my mac will they stay in iPhoto forever after i have deleted them off of my phone?

Once photostream pictures are downloaded onto my mac will they stay in iPhoto forever after i have deleted them off of my phone?

When I synced my iPhone I my Mac , it automatically created a file called photo stream and imported all photos from phone into that file on my Mac.
Do you mean the "Photo Stream" album in the "Web" section of iPhoto? Like shown here?
If that is the only place where you are seeing your photos, in "my Photo Stream" in the "Web" section of Photo, then you need to copy these photos to an event to import them into the library.
The Photo Stream album is only showing you what currently can be imported from iCloud, and the photos will vanish after a month, so you are having a limited time to grab them.
If you have enabled "Automatic Import" in iPhoto's Photo Stream Preferences, it should already have created an event "July Photo Stream" and other monthly events with the photos from the streams. What find in these monthly events has been savely imported.

  • If I delete my whole "Iphoto Library" folder in finder will my photos in the iphoto app itself also be deleted?

Just trying to get some more space on my macbook, and for general knowledge, what will happen to my iphoto application if i completely delete the "iphoto library" in finder?

There are no photos in the iPhoto application. All photos by default are in the iPhoto library
If you delete the iPhoto library then they are deleted
Probably the solution is the run your iPhoto library on an external drive

iPhoto Slideshow: Sometimes the slideshow starts at the last image, rather than the first. How do I ensure the slideshow commences at the first image?

Is this a slideshow played directly from an album or Event or one created in the slideshow mode?
If it's the former that's been a problem for a many users. There hasn't been a firm fix found for it as yet.
There is a workaround.  Put the photos in the order you want, select them all and use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to Text menu option.  Put in Slide and check the box to add a sequential number to give you Slide-01, Slide-02, etc.
Now when clicking the play button at the bottom of the Album or Event window the slides will play in the order Slide-01, Slide-02, etc.
The best workaround is to use the iPhoto slideshow mode to crate the slideshow. There's been no reorts of similar problems in that mode.
