Iphoto 8.1.2 not responding

iphoto 8.1.2. will not open anymore. everytime I open it, it freezes as soon as click on anything. I have relaunched, restarted and reported but no good. I have an imac with 10.5.8.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
If that doesn't help:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • I to use iphoto library manager to save corrupted iphoto and each time it saves some and the first time it brings up iphoto, iphone goes into "not responding" mode.  Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2.

I've had issues with my iPhoto "not responding" and as a result I am attempting to save my photos to an external hard drive using iPhoto library Manager but each time I start the program it saves some, and then when it starts iPhoto, iPhoto then goes into not responding mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2. I have completed all of the photo library first aid steps several times, but it makes no difference, iphoto eventually goes to "not responding."  Initial issues started with Time Machine back ups stopping because of iphoto. Thanks......

Do you have a back up?
If you're just trying to recover the photos you can do that much more simply:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Originals' or 'Masters'. (varies according to the version of iPhoto)
Your photos are inside - these are the originals as imported from your camera.

  • IPhotto, my Iphoto is crash and not responding, what to do

My Iphoto is hang and Not Responding when ever i open it, help please????
    cheers

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Iphoto will launch but not respond

I just bought my macbook and upgraded it to Lion a few weeks ago, but I'm not quite sure which version of iphoto I have or how to find that out. I was taking screenshots of a website yesterday and opening them with iphoto in order to edit them. A few photos in, however, iphoto stopped fully opening. Everytime I launch it I have to force quit it, because as soon as it launches the little pinwheel comes up and I can't do anything. I'm not sure how to fix this problem. It's not dire that I import the photos to edit them. I just want access to my library back!
    Thanks in advance.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto 9.2.3 - Not responding after tried open all Libraries (Spinning Beach ball)

For some reason, I created new library after I pressed Option then Click on Create New Library so I had two of them. Since iPhoto 9.2.2 and iPhoto 9.2.3, I opened and still get the spinning beachball for hours. Even I tried updated & upgrade photos and database ... still it wouldn't work. Does anyone have an advice or have simliar problem?
    Thanks!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2

  • IPhoto Troubles...not responding...

My iphoto has been acting up for a few days now. I've been trying to print some pictures for a class, and everytime i click ANTYHING from task bar (print etc-) it thinks for awhile, and I eventually have to hit force quit. I can view my photos but anything beyond that isn't working. Any suggestions? I've restarted my computer several times, and I'm not having any luck!! Please help!!
    Thanks
    -Jacquie

I'm aware of all of that and was not complaining. I realize that it can take awhile to get a question answered. I was just answering your question.
I was not aware that posting the same question on multiple boards is discouraged. I've done it before and usually have better luck that way. I'm just getting really frustrated. I have been having little problems like this, on and off, with my mac, and have only owned it since August. I bought the Apple Care Protection Plan, yet since i started having these continuing issues with my iPhoto, my macbook freezing (more so than normal etc-) have never been able to get through to a human being. The Apple store in my town rarely has a technician available to look at problems, so therefore, mine just keep pilling up. Quite frustrating since I am a college student relying on this computer.
I don't mean to vent, just letting you know where I'm at right now.

  • IPhoto empty trash application not responding

Have 7,000 photos in my iPhoto trash due to duplicates, but when I go to empty the iPhoto trash it stops responding, is there a way I can delete them bit by bit so I don't overload it and cause it to crash. I tried quitting everything else so it wasn't multitasking but other than that I don't know what to do.. Any help would be great, thanks. (It's a mid 2009 macbook + due to the 2gb RAM I stayed with the OS X 10.8.5 software + its the 8.1.2 iPhoto)

Go to the iPhoto Trash bin and select all of the photos in it and see if you can flag them or keyword them all at one time (we can't with iPhoto 9 or later).  If you can then move them back to their original events by dragging them onto the Event icon above the Trash icon.
Next create a smart album with the criteria Rating is ? or Keyword is ?.  Then you can delete them from that album in small batches of 100-200 or so by using the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the iPhoto Trash bin. Then empty and repeat for another batch.
Otherwise you'll have to put the photos back into their Events and then reselect them from the events and delete.
You should consider upgrading your memory in your Macbook if you plan on using it a while longer.  The 2009 Macbook 5,2 can be upgraded to 6 GB of memory while the Macbook6,1 and handle 8 GB.  If you decide to upgrade go to Crucial.com as they have the most reliable memory for Macs and have outstanding customer support.

  • IPhoto 9.6 will not recognize my Library

I just upgraded my iMac to Yosemite. Once upgraded, I had to update my iPhoto to 9.6. Now, I can't open any of my photos. This is the message I get when I open iPhoto:
    Caution
The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it. iPhoto can try to repair the permissions.
    Repair/Quit
I click Repair, it asks me for my password, I type it in, and it says Repairing photo library permissions
    Then I get:
The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it.
    Ok
I click ok, and then iPhoto closes.
So I tried holding Option and clicking on my iPhoto Library. iPhoto opens up and tells me:
The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it.
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.
    Quit/Upgrade
I click upgrade, it says it's upgrading, I watch the bar go all the way to just before the end and then it freezes and iPhoto says it's not responding. I've tried this many times and even left it on for 1-1/2 days to see if anything would happen. I have to Force Quit
    Other things I've tried:
    - Re-installing iPhoto 9.6 twice
    - Using Time Machine to retrieve an older backup of my Library
    - Using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild my Library
Nothing works. Someone please help me! I desperately need to access these photos for work! Is there something I'm not doing?

    Macintosh HD/Users/username/Library/
That is the User Library, where your preferences and other application support data are stored.
I am asking about your iPhoto Library, where iPhoto is storing the photos, albums, etc. By default this will be stored in your Pictures folder and look like this in the Finder:
If you moved the iPhoto Library to an external drive to save space, it might explain the error message.
After you found your iPhoto Library, try the solution  in Terence Devlin's post:

  • HELP: iPhoto not responding upon login for weeks!!!!

    Hi,
I am in need of help. My iPhoto will not open when I open the application. All I get it Application not responding when I right click on the app sign and the spinnning wheel when I go on iPhoto. It's just froze.
I have tried launching iphoto whilst pressing both alt and cmd and rebuilt thumbnails etc etc but yet its still not working. My iMovie starts by going into iPhoto and iMovie is now freezing and not responding when its launched too.
I have photos in there I want to keep but I do do backups via an external hardrive daily so I presume the photos will be on that somewhere? Can anyone help me t get this back up and running. I use my laptop for my small business and I really need to use this applications.
Thanks in advance. I can send the Error message I get once I quit the app if you need it. I just ignore it and dont send to apple.
    Cheers,
    Tom

  • IPhoto - My iPhoto is not responding. When I click on iPhoto I get a never ending spinning beachball.  I almost think it is looking in the wrong place for the pictures.  How do I redirect it back to the Mac hard drive?

My iPhoto is not responding.  Whenever I click on the iPhoto icon I get a twirling beachball.  It is as if the machine is looking in the wrong place for the photos.  How can I see where the machine is looking to find out if this is really the problem.  How can I see the path?

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then the problem lies with your current library.
If that's the case  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto Version 9.5.1 Not Responding @ Launch

I'm having this issue with iPhoto launching but never fully opening, then needing to force quit.
    iPhoto Version 9.5.1
    OSX 10.9.2
I dont remember the sequence of events exactly however I was saving a video MP4 from my desktop into the library so I could share it in a photostream with a friend.
The MP4 did not finish loading and then iPhoto quit responding.
I force quit iPhoto, and it gave me a message (as best I can remember) do you want to continue saving the MP4, to which I answered no. It has not been reponding at all ever since.
I have repeatedly restarted my iMac with the end results being the same. All other software seems to be working as designed.
Can I answer anymore questions that might help you, help me figure this sucker out?

That was unsuccessful. The same problem happened at the launch of iPhoto. I held the prescribed keys as indicated and after the launch it just kept going in the launching process. And again I got the message "Not Responding"

  • IPhotos not responding?

I've come to use my iphoto and its is saying that my iphoto library is 'not responding' with the 'beach ball' staying on for ages, and to get out of it I'm proforming a 'force quit' action.
Why all of a sudden has this happened? and can I get to my library or have I lost them all?  I've only had my machine since July this year so not a lot of photos stacked up, so it can't be that.
Any help and advice will be gratefully received.
    Thanks

    Jackie...
Hold down the Option and Command keys then launch iPhoto.
Select: Repair the iPhoto Library Database then click Rebuild.

  • Iphoto not responding

    Hello,
My iPhoto is not responding and I have no idea why? Any ideas please? I don't want to loose the last 5 years of photos ;-( It worked the last time I opened the program and now I just get the spinning rainbow wheel? I am using the program on my Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 Processor 2.66 GHz Interl Core 2 Duo
    Thanks

What version of iPhoto? Can you do this simple test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Iphoto is not responding. I just finished importing all of my downloaded pictures (about 1,000) into iPhoto now this happens. I have version 9.5.1

iphoto is not responding. I just finished importing all of my downloaded pictures (about 1,000) into iPhoto now this happens. I have version 9.5.1. I am using OS X 10.9.5

Did you import an iPhoto Library from the old Hard Drive? Do you still have that old Library?
The way to clear out a Library is to Export the photos - Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
    For the annoying start-up message:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.
