Iphoto 9 thumbnails disappeared

Iphoto 09 problem.
I have 166,000 pics in my Iphoto 09.  All was fine until one day the thumbnails were gone. Iphoto did crash often. How do I fix it?  I have been backing up, but now the back up shows nothing since the thumbnail issue.  Anyone know a solution?  Apple Walnut Creek Store just gave my a rude cold shoulder.  HELP HELP HELP    I have an Imac version 10.6.8  the pics are there, but no thumbnails, just blank.
Another weird thing on this Mac.  Where it says start up disk it just says:  Startup Disk /
Is that suppose to be like that?
Thank you  thank you thank you for  any help

You have less that 5 GB of free space - that is your problem - unless you have 10GB or more you will have problems including lost data
You need to either clean up your drive (probably not possible to get enough spce doing this) or run iPhoto on an external drive (must be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)  ) - to do that quit iPhoto, drag the iphoto library intace as a single entity to the external drive, depress teh option key, launch iPhoto and test the new location - you can rebuild there - once everything is good and working perfectly then trash the library on the main drive - test one more time prior to emptying the trash

  • Iphoto thumbnails disappear with each reboot

My iPhoto thumbnails disappear any time I reboot or log out of iPhoto.
I use the rebuild command and get them back, but they don't  stay.
Is this a problem with iPhoto or the address where the thumbnails are stored?

My iPhoto library is in the correct location on my laptop hard drive.
This all started with editing photos.
I backed up to time machine, then deleted @350 photos from a recent download.
iPhoto froze up with this, and I did a force quit.
Re opening iPhoto came back with all black thumbnails.
I option-command opened iPhoto and rebuilt the data, and the thumbnails.
The photos are there, but every time I log out of iPhoto, the thumbnails are gone again, and I have to rebuild.
So...  I restored from a journaled copy of iPhoto photos, from time machine.  The problem persisted.
To restore however I had to move my iPhoto library (30 Gigs)  to an external hard drive because I did not have enough
room on my hard drive to restore from time machine.
The data is all there, but the thumbnails just won't  persist.
    I think it is haunted.
    thanks

  • Thumbnails disappear

why  do the thumbnails disappear in iphoto for the iphone 4 when you put the privacy mode on sometimes is it a glitch or its a way to do it

The thumbnails have not disappeared.  In the first screen you have displayed the apps for which there are privacy settings on your phone.  You have then tapped on PHOTO and the second screen gives you details of settings of apps on your phone for which you have not allowed access to your photos.  I do not see a problem here

         Hi Frank.
I have just had jb Atlanta's problem while adjusting the contrast on a photo. I was creating a slideshow at the time. After a lot of reading up I was about to give up when I tried restoring the file to its original settings as you suggested. Bingo!
However, that would only work for me, if I restored the settings while in the slideshow. All data had 'disappeared' when I attempted to open the photo in its original project folder.
Hope this is of help. Many thanks.

  • How can I delete the iPhoto Video Thumbnails in iMovie?

It's been a while since I've used iMovie, and when I opened the application tonight, I got the following message:
"iMovie needs to generate thumbnails for the videos in your iPhoto library. This process may take several minutes.
You can postpone this operation by clicking Later, but your iPhoto videos will be unavailable until the next time you restart iMovie."
I accidentally hit NOW, and the process began. When I realized it had used about 5 GBs of space, I force quit iMovie, but the disk space was not reclaimed. I need this space back now... I can import the iPhoto videos later. How can I undo the generated iPhoto video thumbnails? There was no project generated, and so no folder with the thumbnails in them. Where are they located? I would like to delete the iPhoto video thumbnails within iMovie, but preserve the thumbnails for other projects. And of course I would like to be sure that I keep the videos themselves in iPhoto - I definitely do not want to lose the videos there. Thanks for your help.
    Greg

The latest incarnation of iMovie doesn't offer the 'Export with Quicktime'-options, the previous versions did.

  • How Do I Update iPhoto's Thumbnail/Preview?

    Hello,
I use a referenced iPhoto library, that is, the photos are NOT kept in iPhoto's database, but simply referenced in their location on my hard drive.
If I edit a referenced photo elsewhere, say in Lightroom or Photoshop, and then look at the photo in iPhoto, the thumbnail does not update. If I double-click the image in iPhoto (say to edit it), it shows the image with new edits, telling me that it has looked at the new, referenced file. But the thumbnail does not update. I have looked for a "recreate preview" command, but have found none.
Any thoughts on how to get iPhoto to build/update the preview image?
    Thanks!
    Michael

    Hello TD,
    Thanks for your reply!
I understand about LR as an external editor. . .
What I have found is that if, in iPhoto, I edit a photo that has been changed it will update the preview. It is not enough to just open the iPhoto editor, an actual change must be made. Once made, the preview is updated to reflect the new file. So, for example: edit a referenced photo in external editor; view photo in iPhoto; see that iPhoto correctly reads the new file, but does not update the preview; open image in iPhoto editor; rotate image; exit iPhoto editor; see that iPhoto preview is correctly updated; unrotate photo; see that correct preview is maintained.
What I would like, but gather does not exist, is a way to ask iPhoto to create new previews for a group of images rather than having to open and edit (and unedit) each one. . .
    Thanks!

  • My iphoto library has disappeared. How can I get it back?

My iphoto library has disappeared. How can I get it back?

I'm very new to this sort of thing, so bear with me.  I had my computer in to the Apple store on Jan 10th, & they replaced Leopard with Snow leopard because of problems.  I have iphoto 8.
This morning opening my computer a picture briefly appreared that I had saved to iphoto. I decided to place it in its correct event box, and  ! sign appeared.  Upon opening iphoto, I found a blank.  I've not backed up my files.  I've looked everywhere on the system, including Trash, applications, Pictures, all my document files.
Also I had 2 icons  of iphoto on my desktop because it had disappeared 2 years ago & came back some months later.  Two days ago I decided to clean up my desktop & moved the icons to the pIcture  file and a document file.  I don't know whether this triggered the disappearance. The main icon is still in the dock.
    Does this help?

  • IPhoto app has disappeared

My iPhoto app won't launch and I can't find it via searches either.
I discovered this when I plugged in my digital camera and the import didn't start automatically as it had done previously.
How can the iPhoto app just disappear?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
How can the iPhoto app just disappear?
It can't. Here are the usual reasons it might be missing:
Someone put it in the trash - have a look there
Someone did an Erase and Install of the OS - iPhoto is not part of the OS and therefore needs to be installed separately.
    Regards

  • Thumbnails disappear in Grid

I have used LR since v1.0 with every single update in between and never had any major issues with LR including out-of-memory erros, upside-down red text on pics, adj. brush performance, now ahve run into this problem.
Thumbnails disappear just before the final high-quality pass. Scrolling out and into view make them redraw, just to disappear again together with the three dots. The neweste thread on the topic I was able to find was dated Sep, 2007: Grid thumbnails disappear after 1/2 second . It didn't solve my problem.
    Some observations:
The problem only affects JPEG images, all other work fine.
Filmstrip is not affected, only grid view.
It's only when the thumbnail info includes the file extension, both in compact and extended mode. (see screenshot 1 and 2)
Metadata panel info is not shown for affected images. Keywording panel is fine.
Synchronize folder fails (does nothing) if the folder has at least one JPEG.
Exporting to a new catalog doesn't cure the problem.
Importing images into a fresh catalog does solve the problem.
    Trashing prefs, TranslatedStrings.txt doesn't help.
Since the only thing that helps is a fresh catalog, my conclusion is catalog corruption. Unfortunately this is not an option for me: too many collections, VCs, flags and stacks lost. I need to cure the catalog. Binary, the catalog seems to be fine — it's been optimized and it passes the integrity test. Also I have opened it with 3rd party utilities (SQLiteSpy).
I attached a small catalog (change extension from .txt to .zip, sorry) with 1 image that exhibits the problem. It was exported form my main catalog.

    DonRicklin wrote:
Actually, though she will likely pass them on it is Daniel Tull at Adobe that has been investigating and repairing Catalogs. He can be contacted at dantull at gmail.com to see if he will still take one and how to send it.
That's what I did and, voila, my catalog is healty again! :-)
For the record, Daniel found that this behaviour was caused by a null value in the sidecarExtensions field of the AgLibraryFile table in the catalog. It has to be an empty string ("") rather than null, otherwise Lightroom goes nuts. Why was is null? Because I did it myself, stupid me. Too much fooling around with my own catalog.

  • IMovie '08 Thumbnails disappear

I am a recent Mac convert and defintley need some help figuring out how to troubleshoot anything on this machine.
When dragging clips longer than 5 minutes into the top (project?) screen all the thumbnails disappear... randomly. If I adjust the interval of the thumbnails (from 10s to 5s or from 10s to 30s, for example) they sometimes come back, but it is definitly not a reliable solution. In general it is a HUGE pain when editing my videos. i can drag my mouse over the area where the thumbnails used to be and it plays the video as if the thumbnails were there... but i can't see them. I'm left feeling around in the dark trying to drop my clips in the correct place. So frustrating!
    Help!
I had this problem on a couple different machines, my brother's MBP and my new iMac. Is there a way to get rid of it for good, or am I going to need to upgrade to Adobe premier or final cut to avoid this ridiculous glitch?

I still have not downloaded the huge OS update. In the meantime the following (forcing iMovie to recreate the thumbnail files from scratch) may help (I had some slightly different problems so dont count on it):
    Close iMovie.
Go to the Movies folder for the user with the missing thumbnails. Go to the iMovie Events folder and then the specific Event folder for the event(s) with the corrupted thumbbails. There should be a "Thumbnails" folder - move this (ont delete it yet kust in case this does not work).
When you restart iMovie it will spend a few minutes (or more if you had a lot of clips) recreating the thumbnails.

  • Why did my iPhoto and Mail disappear?

Why did my iPhoto and Mail disappear?  I also lost and had to reload Quicken.  This all happened in three days.

The applications are gone.  First Quicken disappeared and I reloaded it from the disk yesterday. Today Mail, Contacts and iPhoto disappeared.  No one else uses my computer and I've had no other crashes and I haven't made any changes.  I don't think anything else is missing.  Apple is sending me disks so I can reload the missing stuff but they wouldn't speculate on why it happened nor whether it will continue.  Thanks for helping.

  • Iphoto Library Photos Disappeared

Using iphoto 8, just finished downloading photos from camera. Clicked umount on camera and disconnected mini usb from camera.
Then received msg that some events may have not been saved properly. Couldn't open pics i had just downloaded. Closed iphoto and when I reopened all my photos gone!
    Help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you see anything in iPhoto, like thumbnails or empty thumbnails?
It's a damaged database file. The following may help: try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
    Fix #2
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
    Fix #3
Start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
    1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • My iPhoto library just disappeared!

All of a sudden my iPhoto library is missing. iPhoto can't find it, and it is not located in my pictures folder anymore. How can this happen? I googled this problem, and it seems it has happened to people occasionally over the years. Luckily, I have backed up my hard drive, but how can an entire 12 gb iPhoto library just disappear?

The computer works just fine. The iPhoto library is the only thing that disappeared. My friend plugged his iPhone into my computer to charge it, and when I opened the computer, I was asked something about which iPhoto library to sync with it. That might have something to do with it.

  • Strange Problem -- Thumbnail disappears and I can't open the photo.

Please help. Just upgraded to V1 last night (a few bumps but everything's up and running, lot of work to do still reorganizing my library) and one of my five-star rated photos is acting strange. I can see the thumbnail in the library when I scroll through the folder, but as soon as I try to open it it disappears and blank space is left in the grid where it once was. if I remove the cursor and scroll, the thumbnail shows up again, but I can't get that picture selected! I though it might need to be reconnected so I tried to reimport, but it told me the image was already in the library and asked me if I wanted to open it. When I said yes, it showed me the thumbnail but then the thumbnail disappeared again when I tried to open it!
any thoughts? I need this picture.
    many thanks.
    Dave

mine are raw. i don't want to delete the folder because I have lots of edits on other images in the folder that I don't want to lose. fortunately, I was able to find another image in that sequence that suited my purpose so I re-edited that and used it. one nice thing is that with cloning/healing I didn't have to go into photoshop at all! :) but that other image is still acting strange....
