IPhoto crash looses current work
Hi all,
I was editing photos for 3 hours in iPhoto in which I was adding ratings and Faces when my iMac froze. I was forced to hard reboot. When I went back into iPhoto, my changes were not saved. I have a Time Machine backup within the last hour of work that I would like to access and restore only the photos on which I was working. Is this possible, or must I restore my entire library?
I am running OS 10.8.5 and iPhoto 9.4.3 o my iMac.
Thanks for your help.
DJ
I don't now. What is clear is that the app didn't quit but froze or crash, so all bets are off, I'm afriad.]
You could try rebuild first:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

ITunes and iPhoto Crash! Not working.
Ok so 2 days ago i started getting problems with my Mac(10.6.2) (First time like ever!). I tried to start Firefox, it crashed on start up and i mean, it bounced and then NOTHING! I deleted the .plist file and restarted and it worked. Next, iPhoto went down, it wont start at all. Same thing, bounces in the dock and then nothing, not even a start screen.
I did the same, deleted plist files, even removing and deleting the library (i have all photos backed up so i just wiped the whole thing). I even used "iPhotoLibraryManager" and it didn't do anything, restarted, everything i can think of, still no iPhoto. I googled and googled and found page after page of things that didn't help one bit. Now to be honest i can life without iPhoto, but i NEED to have iTunes, thats not a option.
So next, iTunes now wont work, (9.1.1) it seems each day a new program is gone! Same as before, i click iTunes icon, it bounces and then dead. I looked up console messages and it is saying (for BOTH iTunes and iPhoto)
"[0x0-0x63063].com.apple.iTunes[810] dyld: Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Symbolication.framework/Versions/A/Symbolicat ion" "com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[93] (com.apple.ReportCrash[817]) Job appears to have crashed: Trace/BPT trap"
So it looks like the libraries are corrupt or something? This seems to be all im getting. Again, i tried rebuilding library, deleting itunes.plist and even deleting the program (and the whole itunes folder) and reinstall a new one from apple, i even made a new user account and logged in and same exact thing, bounce and dead!
Does anyone know ANYTHING that will help me? I seem to have tried everything!! I am lost without iTunes! Please help... :(:(:(g4s wrote:
I would boot to your install disc that came with your computer, like you're going to reinstall. After you pick your language, choose Utilities from the menu bar, open Disk Utility, choose your regular boot drive on the left column, then Repair Disk. See if it turns up anything. Then it wouldn't hurt to Repair Permissions while you're in there. Any permission errors can probably be ignored.
Repair Disk can fix directory problems, up to a point. Hopefully your drive is OK.
I'd give it a try anyway.
Tried that now, and its still the same, just wont work!

sorry, i missed that.
did you already try removing iTunes completely from your Mac ? click here and follow the instructions if you like to try. download a fresh copy from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

Again, i said i did that. Didn't do a thing.. -
Upon upgrading iPhoto, iPhoto Help no longer works. It gives the error message: "The selected topic is currently unavailable. To see all iPhoto Help, you must be connected to the Internet." I am obviously connected to the internet since you are reading this.
I tried upgrading permissions but it did not help!? Can anyone tell me what is wrong? ThanksTry
Reboot the computer, see if that fixes it.
Then try:
Backup your files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk and simply reinstalling OS X
Log in and update to 10.6.8
c boot off the 10.6 disk again and use Disk Utility >Repair Disk
reboot and all should be fine, except some third party programs that install kext files, those will have to be reinstalled from fresh sources. -
Iphoto crashes so tried the Alt start with new library and that worked. So now what? How to I get back to my pictures.
That shows you that iPhoto is working correctly and whatever issue you are having is based in your original library.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -
I am so tired of iphoto crashing, losing work I've done. I want to switch to photoshop elements 10 but need to know if it uses the iphoto library or if I can import that library into elements
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired. -
Iphoto crashed and will not start. How do I save my existing photos and videos and reinstall Iphoto?
reinstalling will not cure this - you need to rebuild your library- Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database
And the ONLY way to "save" your photos and videos - and every other file on your computer - is to always have a good current backup - sooner or later your disk will fail and with no backup you will lose everything

Iphoto crashes every time I open it
I'm working on a Mac Pro with 3 GHz processor, 48GB 1866 MHz and 512GB SSD with Yosemite 10.10.1. And iPhoto 9.6. I have been working on an iphoto library housed on an external drive (LaCie D2 Thunderbolt 2/USB 3), but I have the same problem when I move the library onto the MacPro.
I was finishing a photobook, making a map page, and iPhoto crashed. Ever since, iPhoto now crashes upon opening. As mentioned above, this occurs also if I move the library onto the MacPro and try to open it from there.
I would love some guidance on how to get iphoto open with this library as the book took a huge amount of time to make Thanks so much.

Crashes can be caused by corrupted media in a library. If one of your image files or videos should be unreadable, it can crash iPhoto on any mac, if you are trying to work with the same mediathek (iPhoto library).
Or if you are having the same third party software installed on all Macs, the same can happen. Older versions of third party applications may have installed system modifications - system extensions, device drivers, video codecs. And the presence of these modifications makes your mac unstable and can crash your mac, even if you do not launch this software directly. You may not notice, that this older code will be used.
Have you tried to run iPhoto while being booted in Safe Mode? That will deactivate non-standard extensions. If iPhoto runs correctly in Safe mode, you have installed something, that is not compatible with your current system.

HT2638 iPhoto crashes when I click on the "Rebuild" button????
When I launch iPhoto 9.2.3 (OSX 10.6.8), it comes up saying the photo library has become unreadable, and instructs me to restart the app whilst holding the command and option keys down. When I do this, it gives a panel where I can select to rebuild the photo library. I click on Rebuild, and it crashes immediately without a crash log or event in syslog.
Anyone know how to rebuild the photo library manually?
Where does the file reside on the system?Try this: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot.
4 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that doesn't help log into another user account on your Mac and see if iPhoto will work as it's suposed to there. If it does then the problem lies with your account. If iPhoto crashes in the other account a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated.
To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/ folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all appropriate updaters. -
IPhoto crashes 5 seconds after opening
iPhoto worked fine yesterday, and today it crashes as soona as I open it. I've read the other threads and tried the solutions (setting up a dummy account and opening iPhoto still crashes, creating new Library still crashes, etc) and nothing is working. This is my error report:

IPhoto Crashes during Upgrade at Thumbnails
I have searched this discussion group and found many suggestions to overcome my problem with iPhoto 5.0.4, but none are working.
I installed iLife '05 yesterday. My entire purpose in purchasing this software was to organize my extensive photo library. When going through the upgrade process, iPhoto crashes while updating Thumbnails.
I have tried this suggestion:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.
See it it will work now. If not, launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the two options regarding thumbnails. This may be the same as what iPhoto was doing on its own but give it a try. if that fails then move the three thumbnail files, Thumb32.data, Thumb64.data and ThumbJPG.data to the Trash and launch iPhoto. They may be damaged and rebuilding this way may get you thru the process.
I have tried the suggestions on these pages:
http://homepage.mac.com/loridilo/Personal21.html
http://homepage.mac.com/loridilo/Personal22.html
NOTHING works. I know my photos are not lost and that they are on my hard drive. However, if I have to recreate the hundreds of folders I'm gonna go postal.
-KirkKirk:
Do you have a backup copy of your V4 iPhoto Library folder? After installing iLife 05 did you repair disk permissions with Disk Utility?
Here's an easy off the wall fix that worked for another user, it just might work for you.
1 - move your iPhoto Library folder to the desktop.
2 - launch iPhoto and when asked create a new library.
3 - quit iPhoto and move the new library folder to the trash and move the original one back to the Pictures folder.
4 - launch iPhoto.
Don't ask me why but it worked for another user.
If that doesn't work you can try to rebuild the library (make a temporary backup copy of the library folder first - select it and type Command-D. Then launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
If that doesn't work there's this option:
1 - move the backup library folder to the desktop and trash the original that didn't rebuild properly.
2 - launch iPhoto and create a new library.
3 - using the File->Add to Library select the duplicate library folder and click the Import button.
This will import the full sized image files that are inside that iPhoto Library folder. Most of the rolls will be intact but with different titles and dates (the current import date). There will be additional rolls for the various original files of those you've edited earlier. You will lose albums, keywords and comments. But that should get you an up and running library.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

IPhoto crashes ~ 15 seconds after launch
-- I had iPhoto 09 on a Mac with OS 10.5 and it worked fine.
-- I then did a final Time Machine backup of the drive
-- booted the Mac from a Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) install flash drive
-- reformatted the boot drive and did clean install of Lion
-- at the end of the install process I created a new "dummy" user account
-- I fully updated to Mac OS 10.7.3 and iLife '11 (including all updates to iPhoto)
-- Used Migration Assistant to import my old user folder from the Time Machine backup drive, then logged into that old account.
-- Everything seemed fine until I launch iPhoto
-- iPhoto began the upgrade process and seemed to complete it, but once the upgrade was complete and the main iPhoto window appeared, iPhoto crashed.
-- After troubleshooting, I now know that the issue isn't the old library being corrupted because iPhoto consistently crashes about 15 seconds after startup, even if I create a new iPhoto Library.
Below is the Crash Log that is created after the following:
---- delete all iPhoto preferences from the Preferences folder in my User account
---- Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new library
---- after about 15 seconds iPhoto crashes. Here's the log - any help figuring out what's going on is appreciated!

506 com.apple.iPhoto 0xWelcome to the Apple Discussions. If iPhoto crashes in the other account that's an indication that a reinstall of iPhoto is warranted. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Install iPhoto from the disk it came on, run the latest updaters, repair permissions and try again.

i Photo (version 7.1.1) crashes on opening. Just Four days ago I did a clean install of the system software. I examined the disk with DiskWarrior 4 without change. I reinstalled the iPhoto, version 7.1.1 again without change. The console log app. has this to say:
dyld: Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iLifeMediaBrowser.framework/Versions/A/iLifeM ediaBrowser
Referenced from: /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/MacOS/iPhoto

My Mac is a G4 1.25 GHz DP MDD, 2 GB RAM running OS 10.4.11. The Crash Log reports the problem is: Reason: image not found. Thanks for any suggestions to clear the issue.
EricEric:
It looks like the iLifeMediaBroswer didn't get installed when you did the system install. You may have to do an Archive and Install (with the option to preserve the user and internet settings) in order to get that framework to install. Also don't forget to install the iLife Support 1.1 updater as it an essential part of the package. You can find it at the Apple Downloads site.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Lost photos as iphoto crashed- how do I get them back?
As I was downloading my photos from my exilim camera, iphoto crashed and I lost my photos. I pressed the download and delete from camera button as I usually do- so there aren't any files left on the camera. Can I open one of those files in the picture library that I have no idea what their function is about and find my photos?? Are my pictures possibly hidden somewhere. Please help!!
Powerbook G4 12" Mac OS X (10.4.6)Isaac:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The photos in your library are in the User/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals folder. What happened is that the crash damaged the Library6.iPhoto database file, causing iPhoto to think there are no photos in the library.
You'll have to start over with a new library and import the Originals folder and subfolders into the new library. Move the current library folder to the desktop and launch iPhoto. When it asks you what to do select "Create library". Then drag just the Originals folder from the library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window. That will give you the same rolls as was in the old library but no keywords, comments, albums, etc.
To recover the files in the camera you can try MediaRECOVER. You can run it in the Demo mode to see what photos it will be able to recover before you commit to purchase.
In the future for insurance against the occasional iPhoto database corruption that you experienced I recommend that you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get you your library back. With that in mind by keeping it current I mean backup after each import and after any serious editing or creating that you might do in the library like making books, slideshows, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

Imported photos, deleted originals, then iphoto crashed and lost everything
I imported photos from my iphone, deleted the originals (i never do this, but figured, it's a new year so i should start cleaning up my phone!), and then iphoto crashed and now the photos i imported are nowhere to be found! help!
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There's still a good chance that the photos are in the library but just not being recognized by iPhoto. Backup the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.
Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current.
NOTE: this is not the same as routinely backing up your entire iPhoto library folder to protect your photos. It only protects the loss of your organizational efforts that the database file contains.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete. -
IPhoto crashes when I edit with Photoshop!
Whenever I edit an iPhoto photo using Photoshop, iPhoto crashes when I try to import it back into iPhoto. This happens whether I export the photo, Photoshop it, and re-import it, or whether I use iPhoto Preferences to select Photoshop as my editor. I can import other photos into iPhoto, just not photos that have been edited with Photoshop. Help would be much appreciated!
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
