IPhoto problem with ! Appearing

I recently uploaded a series of pictures to my IPhoto 08 but whenever I double click to view a vertical picture I get the ! instead. The horizontal and prior uploaded vertical picture have no problem. This has never happened before & I haven't altered the pictures in any way. I uploaded them from my scandisk card into the printer as usual and into the Iphoto page

Hi Joey
The "!" means that iPhoto can't find the photo or the connection between iPhoto and the Library has been severed. Try reinstalling the photos that give you the !. Or try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
Good luck.

Mail and iPhoto Problems with sending photos.
I have this problem that started a while ago and seems to be getting worse.
    Here are the different scenarios.
-If I try to share a photo to email within iPhoto, it will insert the image file name in the mail message, but no image icon or opened image. In iPhoto Preferences under General I have chosen to use Email Photos using Mail.
-If I choose to use iPhoto to send the photo, it will compose the message and the photo is viewable. If I send the message i can view the photo within the email I sent to myself. Nothing happens when I double click on the photo in the Mail message. Nothing happens when i control click on the photo in the mail message. Nothing happens when I try to drag the photo to the desktop from the mail message. When I try to save attachments from the email and choose a place to save it, the save button is grayed out and it cannot be saved. When I check the mail message it says there is an attachemnt but there is no file size listed.
-If I use the stationary within Mail app I cannot drag a photo into the placeholder, I get a circle with a line through it symbol when I try. It happens if I try to drag a photo from the desktop or from the media browser within Mail app.
-If I drag the photo to the desktop from iPhoto, I can double click it on the desktop and it will open in Preview.
-If I then control click on the same photo on the desktop and scroll to share/email, the generic photo icon will be inserted in the mail message. If i double click the photo icon in the mail message  I get a message it can't be opened because it is empty.
-If I drag that same image to the mail message body the same thing happens.
-If I send that email to someone they cannot open the image file.
    What I can do:
    - I can drag that same image file on the desktop to my dropbox folder and  it will upload. From there I can go on my iPad and download the photo and send it through email just fine.
-I can open the same image file on my desktop in Preview, I can copy and paste it into a mail message and the image will be viewable in the mail message by me and by the recipient.
-I can drag that same image on the desktop to my safari browser window and it will be viewable in the page. i can then copy and paste that image into a mail message and it is viewable in the message.  I can then send that email message to myself and i can control click on the image and get all my options. It also shows as an attachment with the size of the image file in the mail message.
I can send that message to someone and they can see the photo and open it fine.
-If I send that same email to me I can see the photo within the mail.  If I then drag that photo to the desktop I cannot use it again to put in an email as the same problem happens again.
I have tried all scenarios in my user account, another users account and in a guest account. The same happens in all. I am guessing because of this it is not a corrupt preference file, unless all of the preference files are corrupt. The guest user account I added a new email account so it was brand new and still had the problem.
I am stumped, all and any help is appreciated.

Another problem that may be related….
I have Snapz Pro. I used to be able to save the snaps to my desktop or a folder. Now when I take a screenshot and try to save the file to my desktop or a folder on my desktop I get this message  "Files cannot be created in the selected location. You do not have permission to write to the selected location.   Please choose a different location."  I have found that i can only save the file to the clipboard.   I have repaired permissions many times and still I have this problem.

  • IPhoto problem with email, export, editing...

Had my iMac upgraded with a new harddrive and Lion at my authorized retailer & service center. All has been good but did not use iPhoto much after the upgrade, but all seemed to be good.
    Recently photographed a family occasion and now I experience the following problems;
    1. After successful import I edit the pictures which leads to numerous crashes, seemingly randomly, but most frequently when jumping from editing one picture to the next.
    2. Share, Email does not work, only a few of the selected pictures are sent, sometimes with a low resolution thumbnail instead of the desired picture. The selection process works normally, but when the mail has been formatted only a few or none picture are inserted, in any of the templates, including classic. The number of selcted photos and their size are reported normal, they just don't show up in the mail itself
    3. Resorting to export to a folder, all of the pictures are exported, however not always with intact changes/edits???
I have previously never had any major problems with iPhoto up until this version, and am seriously considering ditching it after all the wasted time.
Any suggestions how to attack this problem in iPhoto 11 & 10.7 Lion?  (I am unable to find any plist etc like in 10.6 and earlier)
Thanks for any hints and/or tips...

    Hi Larry,
    thanks for your quick reply...
The harddrive and all user data was transferred by the authorized service center. I able to see and use all the old pictures, so I think (and hope) my pictures were correctly transferred.
    After reading this:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3087683?start=45&tstart=0
and done minor edits to ALL the NEW (of today) pictures I want, it seems to file, export correctly. I did some additional minor adjustments (exposure, saturation, sharpness, etc) and behold, the export worked ok, including edits like crops, straightenings, etc, that were omitted without the "adjustments"...
It feels like some proper bugs to me, and will probably look for another more robust and flexible software to do my edits...
    Recommendations?
Using Picasa sometimes, but read somewhere they use a hack to get to the iPhoto pictures & database, not sure I like that... Maybe I should go Aperture...???

  • IPhoto problem with external flash drive

I'm trying to transfer some pictures from IPhoto to my external flash drive but it won't allow me to.

    Hi jschmidt33,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Try following along with the article below, if you follow those steps you should be able to save photos to your external drive or any other folder on your computer's internal drive.
    iPhoto '11: Export a photo
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2438
When you email, print, publish, or export a photo from your iPhoto library, iPhoto asks you to choose the size, also known as resolution. The settings you choose depend on what you want to do with the photo.
To change a photo’s size or file format, you export the photo. You might want to export photos so that you can import them into another application.
    To export photos:
Select the photo or photos you want to export.
    Choose File > Export.
At the top of the Export Photos window, click the File Export button.
To specify the file type for the exported photo, choose an option from the Kind pop-up menu:Original: Exports the photo as it was originally imported into iPhoto, before editing.Current: Exports the photo in its current format. If you imported a RAW-format photo and then edited it in iPhoto, the photo is exported as a JPEG file.JPEG: If you choose this format, choose an option from the JPEG Quality pop-up menu. The higher the quality, the bigger the photo. For example, if the photo will be used on a website where optimal quality for printing isn’t required, you could choose Low to save storage space on the website.TIFF: A lossless file format that works well for transferring photos between computers and applications.PNG: Another lossless file format popular for web images.
To change the size (resolution), choose an option from the Size pop-up menu:
For photos to be emailed or mainly viewed onscreen, these settings compress the photos (making them smaller):
Small: Use for photos you email or publish to websites where you don’t expect anyone to download and print your photos.
Medium: Use when you or your recipients have a reasonably fast Internet connection, such as DSL. This setting is not suitable for making prints.
Large: Use this setting when you and your recipients have a very fast connection. This size can be used to print small to standard-size photos (2 by 3, 3 by 5, and 4 by 6 inches).
For photos to be printed or published for download, these settings provide maximum detail for final prints:
Optimized: Use for larger prints and for publishing photos to websites for others to download and print. With this setting, photos are slightly compressed to a smaller file size so that they download faster without compromising quality.
Actual Size/Full Size: Use to make high-quality prints in small to large sizes, or to upload photos to websites so that others can download and print them. This setting matches the actual size of your photo, so it may take longer to upload or download.
Specify your other options:Include checkboxes: If you choose JPEG or TIFF from the Kind pop-up menu, you can include titles, keywords, and location information with the exported photos by selecting the checkboxes.File Name: Choose whether to export photos in sequence, or by their filenames, iPhoto titles, or album name.Prefix for sequential: If you choose Sequential from the File Name pop-up menu, you can specify text to appear before each number (for example, Birthday01, Birthday02, and so on). This step is optional.
    Click Export.
Choose where to save the exported photo files, and then click OK.
iPhoto works best with JPEG files, the standard format for data compression of still pictures. If you experience problems working with a non-JPEG file in iPhoto, use a different image-editing application to convert the image to JPEG.
    Good luck!

I loaded the library manager but this says I Iphoto timed out when trying to use the rebuild facility.
I know a very stupid mistake on my part and I will be much more careful next time and will ensure the little buggers are on guest account not mine as well, which is what caused the problem I never realised I had left my account open. Been a hectic week and brain seems to have gone on holiday.
Can anyone help me please or will I have to go pay money out when I can afford it.
    Thanks
    Anna

I opened the computer this morning and I seem to have it all working after restoring from my backup as you suggested, I am using Library manager to rebuild my library. I did put copies of the new photos which had not been backd up on a memory card just in case but all seems fine.
Thank you to everyone on here as I read everything I could and it has helped me restore Iphoto and get all my photos back where I want them. Thank god I had a back up drive as well.

  • IPhoto problem with "date created" on photos when moving to Ext HD

I'm unable to copy or backup photos from iPhoto onto an external HD w/o iPhoto changing the original date and time information for the photos. I've exported them and dragged them, with different results, but the "date created" changes every time. It changes the date the original photo was taken (which is displayed for each photo in iPhoto), either changing it to the date that I edited the photo or the date that I moved the photo onto the Ext HD.  Any solutions?

Thanks for the responses, Larry and Terence.
I understand that there is a difference between the photo date and the file date, and I think I understand what is going on when I try to copy my photos onto my External HD.  What I don't understand is why the EXIF data from each photo can't be transferred along with the photo.  The only date information that comes with it (via Finder) is the following:
    1)  If I drag photos into a file I've named and created on my ExtHD, finder changes the "date created" from the date the photo was taken to the date that I moved the photo from my laptop onto my destop Mac, not the date that the photo was taken.
    2)  If I use the export function to attempt to put photos on my ExtHD, finder changes the "date created" and the "date modified" to the current date and time on every photo.  (And who would even want that information?)
What I want is for each photo to display the date and time that I actually TOOK the photo.  Is that so hard to do?
Why does Finder switch to some sort of filing date instead of keeping the EXIF data that it seems most people would prefer?
I hate to say this, but when I had a PC this was as easy as pie.  No problems, EVER.  And now that I have a Mac, my photo library on my ExtHD (where I store my photos for safekeeping -- in addition to Time Machine) is a mess.  My folders display the date, but the photos inside each file are incorrectly dated.
    Melinda
P.S.  I have Mac OS X, Version 10.5.8, and would need the 10.6 version or higher to use the Better Finder app that Terence mentions.  Do you think I should update to get that program?  Is that program free or do I have to pay for it?  Would that solve my problems?

  • Iphoto problem with data transfer

    Hi,
I just got the new Macbook and had a data transfer done from my old Ibook. However not all of my photos migrated over, or at least it appears that way. When I open Iphoto there is the information for these photos but with a blank image. Is there anyway I can get the images from another source in my computer or should I just try and copy and transfer those pictures again from my old computer?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

That is the problem - the iPhoto library must be on a drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - you need to move it to a correctly formatted drive and hopefully it had not been permanently damaged by being on an incorrectly frmatted drive

  • Iphoto: problem with background color on Calendar.  Help!

I have made 4 calendars using iphoto now.  The first time I did it, I was able to custom background color the pages, including the bottom half with month and days.  Since then, the only page that works for making background color changes is the top page (the border between photos).  What am I doing wrong?  When I go back to my original calendar (which I saved), I can still change the colors, but it doesn't work on any subsequent calendars.  Can someone please advise?
    Thanks,
    Catherine

    Catherine,
you might try to change the "Theme" of your calendar. Not all themes allow to change the background color for the calendar page. For example, the "Colored Paper" theme lets you select the background color for all pages - click the "Layout" button and select a page in the page browser;  then select a colored background tile, like this:

  • Iphoto problem with software

ok, new to mac...be patient!! lost my iphoto icon off of my dock. tried to find it and in the process lost my iphoto folder in picures. started a new iphoto, thinking it would restore...not. now i have 2 iphotos when i do a search. one has my photos the other is empty. how do i redo my mess??

    Hello, Wisia,
    Welcome to the discussions.
You have interfered with iPhoto's organization outside iPhoto. That violates the cardinal rule of iPhoto: Don't do anything with iPhotoLibrary files in Finder:
    Don't Tamper
Now, iPhoto has lost its link to your photos. You need to rebuild your library. Launch iPhoto and hold down the option+shift keys until you see the window that asks if you want to rebuild the library. Choose to do so, by clicking 'yes' and 'save.' This should give you back your photos in your library.
Post back if this rebuild does not help.

  • IPhoto Problems With AOL

    Hi,
Recently some of the folks I've been emailing photos to from iPhoto 6 have been unable to view the photos. Other folks using AOL have had no difficulty viewing the photos. Does anyone no what's going on here and what can be done to fix things.
    Thanks,
    Win

One of the AOL folks on my email list tells me that he "sometimes" is able to view photos and sometimes is not, but adds that he has always been able to see the photos I've sent him.
Well that means that at least sometimes the mail is being sent correctly, and frankly, can this person be sure the problem is not on his side?
Another respondent tells me that she "can see the photo you just sent accessing AOL through Internet Explorer while on the road - at home where I have AOL software downloaded on my PC, I would have to download any attachment to see it."
So, is working perfectly for her. She's getting the Mail and can see it in IE or on her Computer. (And of course she has to download an attachment to see it!)
Yet another friend using AOL has never been able to view any photos that I've sent him.
Again, we know the pics are being sent correctly (person 2 demonstrates this), so it has be a issue at the other end.

  • IPhoto problem with Leopard

I am unable to attach more than one photo to an email. It says there are
"14 great photos" but only one gets sent. The pop up message says" Mail error: Can't get Para 8 of content of outgoing message ID131267600. Invalid index." I have no idea what this means.

Your photos are save inside the iPhoto Library package. The database file that controls the entire library was corrupted and the rebuilding could not fix it. Since rebuilding the library did not resurrect it you can try the following:
1 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This method uses the AlbumData.xml file in the library package and if it's not damages you'll recover your events, albums, keywords, tiles and comments. It won't recover books, slideshows, cards, etc. It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
2 - if Step 1 doesn't do the job you'll have to start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
