  • IPod Classic: Photos Issue: Photos on iPod Show Black Screen - Replicated!

Issue / My Solution related to format = PC / Windows
*FINALLY! I've replicated the issue where some random pictures in iPod photos show as a thumbnail, DON'T show when clicked with center button (instead a nice friendly black screen is shown) but DO show when you click the center button again to start Slide Show.*
Firstly, I'll start by saying that this was one of 4-5 issues that caused me to go to my local Apple store today & get my SECOND replacement (3rd iPod Classic; Black; 160 GB). It made me laugh when the technicians told me the truth; since Apple never preps even their own people for new products to possibly get trained on so that maybe they're more technically knowledgeable then their consumers when they go on sale, this store's approach has typically been 'Problem with a 6th Generation? Here's a new one'.
It's been a quick & easy way to satisfy customers while getting them no where, but they go home thinking their new unit will work, when in reality it was never a hardware issue.
Anyways, I exchanged 2 x 160 GB & 1 x 80 GB tonight for many of the same reasons, truthfully because I felt I'm due new units after the amount of times I've reimaged (restored) each by restoring all versions of the firmware software.
Many of you have experienced the photo issue I mentioned above before going off on my tangent, many of you may not have (yet).
Well, I'm 1,000% that I replicated this one:
*When restoring one of the iPods replaced, I conveniently noticed that the pictures which showed up blank on my iPod had illegal characters in their Windows Filenames.*
*These characters can include, but are not limited to:*
    *apostrophe ('); comma (,); period (.)*
*Again, the characters above are the only ones I've identified so far; granted that it should not ultimately be like this; the iPod should accept filenames containing these characters & if it can't or it's too hard for it to accept them, iTunes should display a warning to the end user to change the filenames with illegal characters.*
In conclusion, I'm about to unwrap my new 160 GB & sync it. I will avoid & hold off with the 1.0.2 update for as long as possible in hopes that a 1.0.3 comes out soon; especially since the only noticeable difference it made for me was a faster & more responsive & sturdy Cover Flow (don't even use anyways) + shuts off in my JBL Dock at work (replicated as a bug in 1.0.2; workaround: use PLAY, PAUSE & other controls on the unit itself, not with the dock or remote control on the dock.)
I learned my lesson the hard way & will definitely wait a few days until 1.0.3 is released to see how it really is by feedback posted here in this forum. For all you newbies, this is the best advice I can offer; don't bank on 1 or 2 posts, read a bunch. When you start seeing a pattern of problems, you know something can't be right. It's funny how you look at the post history of these updates (1.0.1 & 1.0.2 & you see all those who jumped to install post only the nicest things & the great enhancements they see, until a day later they're hit with the negatives of that build.
_*+--> Truth is,_ I can't believe Apple has gotten away without releasing 1.0.3 by now.+*
*+If this keeps up, I hate to say it, but their ratings will definitely go down the tubes (not being negative, just a realist).+*
    Any thoughts?

I don't think it's illegal file names. I've noticed that the file takes a while to "load" even when after you see the thumbnail in the main screen. A few back and forths and hearing the hard drive spinning finally confirmed that it would take a while for the pic to show up...extremely annoying, but a hard drive type issue methinks. Photos that show up once, don't show up again or take forever to do so and vice versa.
Not sure how this affects firmware as I'm not techy (I'm jazzy :)).
I'm going to let all my photos "fully load", and then try it again.
    I tried your method on 3 sixth generations with this issue (2 x 80gb & 1 x 160gb). I let them sit for 12 minutes; no picture.
Changed filename to remove a comma found in the names; then I sync it again & ALL BETTER.

my ipod touch 4th gen isnt work after a long time with 0 percent battery power. Then its not working. computer doesnt respond to my ipod .only black screen is appearing it even not wake up after reset it what can i do please help me

After being connected to a charging source overnight try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

my ipod classic's screen  when connected to a computer is flickering(blinking) and when the time i have to restore it- it won't  what actions will i do with it? Thanks for your answers

If you successfully restored (went through all steps without error) to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem. Likely that the cracks propagated to cause your current problem.

  • Ipod Classic, black lines?

I started up my ipod today, to find it having black lines all over the place. I did a hard reset, nothing. I also still haVe access to everything on it, it's just that the screen is messed up.

    Hey TotoMo,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that you are experiencing issues with your iPod classic. Let’s see if we can isolate this issue to hardware or software. To do so, try restoring your iPod with iTunes:

  • Ipod nano black screen and isn't recognized on itunes

Ipod nano 7th gen was working fine then the music started lagging and after about 30 seconds it just stopped working. I now have a black screen and it wont turn on. It is not being recognizedin itunes. What do I need to do to fix this issue. Any and all help would be very helpful.  Thanks

Have you tried doing a Reset (restart) in the iPod?

In case the battery is low on power, you can try this while the iPod is connected to power.

  • IPod Classic's screen when connecting to ITunes

With my IPod Classic 80GB with displying time on the menu, when connecting(Syncing) to ITunes, where time was displyed on the top grey line like 8:20PM for example, it turns into a meaningless letter 'P'.
If the time is like 8:20AM, no such letter will appear on this grey line.
Is this for everyone's ipod classics? Or only mines stuffed.
No fault on its functions, but curious if this is just a stuff up by Apple.
    Your yes/no is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I'm seeing the same here, too. Letter "P" on top of the screen when connected to iTunes.
I will see if turning off the clock in the display or switching to 24hour time works. Hadn't noticed if connected in the AM makes a difference since I usually synch up at night in the PM.
The iPod seems to operate just fine otherwise.

  • Ipod Freeze - Black screen with Apple keeps appearing

Recently my Ipod starting to randomly "freeze" while playing a song. (The black screen with the white apple shows up) It doesn't happen all that often, but enough that it bugs me.
My Ipod is pretty new, I bought it in August. Anyone know what's wrong? Should I contact Apple? Thanks.

If you do a Windows Search for music files, or use the Windows Explorer to view your hard drive contents, there are columns that show you filenames, file sizes, types, etc.
If you right clik on the column header (up on top where it says "fileName" or "file size"), a list of optional columns will appear, and you when you pick one, a new column will appear showing the details of whatever you chose. So if you pick the "genre", a Genre column will open in that window and show you the genres of every song on the screen. There is also a "Channels" column, which will show you the number of channels the file is encoded in (i.e. Mono, Stereo) Once you have that column showing, you can then Sort the files in the folder based on that column by left cliking on the column header (where it says "channels"). That will group all of your Mono songs togther, at which point you can easily move them out of the Ituns library as a group, re-encode them to Stereo, or just delete them altogether.
But all of that still won't get them off the Ipod, unless you follow the above process on the Ipod itself rather than your hard drive. But I think it's easier to get rid of the files off the computer then re-sync the Ipod using ITunes, which will erase the unwanted (mono) tracks.

  • Ipod camera black screen when opened and sync prob HELP!!!

hello i just went to open the camera on my ipod touch 4g and it just went black just a black screen when i press the home button it goes straight to the home screen everything else is fine i just open the camera and a black screen appears, it is working fine now but just wondering if it is faulty or somthing.
some times it does not sync i will plug it into the computes usb port and it wont charge i takes about 3 to 6 tries to get it to work any help thanks

Same thing just happened to me, found another solution though.
Plug the USB cable into your PC/base of iPod Touch.
    Turn off the iPod completely.
Wait 10 seconds and re-power the iPod.
Now load up the camera; and the screen should be back to normal.
I have similar screen freeze issue with my Sony Erricson K700i Mobile phone, and plugging in the 'power' cable always resolves it, so it would seem to be of the same method used to resolve this iPod issue!!
Strange thing as you've posted, all other apps etc still work.  Maybe support will get around to resolving this bug!!

  • IPod displaying black screen when I want to view photos

    Hi,
here's the thing I wasn't able to find a solution yet. I synced some photo album from iPhoto to iPod nano 4gb (3rd gen). When navigating to photos with nano I see the album and inside the photos thumbnails but when I enter into the photo full screen mode to view photo nano just displays a black screen... no photo ...
    Am I doing something wrong?

I did an update that my Macbook required and it sorted itself out, hope it works out for you.

  • Ipod touch black screen, but plays music

My iPod touch, 4th geneneration, won't turn on. It has a black screen. I've read countless discussions on here. I tried the 30 second pressing down both home and power, recovery mode, plugging ipod into itunes and holding down the buttons. I've tried charging it, but everytime i do, I can hear the ding it does when it starts charging. Music even played once! It's just a black screen though. Any other suggestions?

Chpwnd, it is not the digitizer, that senses touch. The problem is with either the LCD screen, the backlight or thedriving circuits and connections

Not sure if a factory respring would work with this. I think his digitizer is dead.

  • New iPod classic - white screen

    Hi,
Just bought an iPod classic. After charging there is only a white screen. But it is working, I could listen to music on it, but I can't anything but a white screen on it.
I've downloaded the newest software but that didn't seem to work. I've had another iPod plugged to iTunes (a 5th generation), could this the problem or do I have to get back to the store to get a hold of another copy?

Try resetting the ipod by pressing the menu and select buttons for about 6 seconds until the apple logo shows.

  • IPod 4G black screen, unresponsive, stuck during restore

Hi there, I would like to know if anyone has had this problem and if it has been resolved. I've encountered myself to be stuck in this loop of "waiting for ipod" when trying to restore the ipod to ios 6.1.3. It was previously on ios 6.1.2. This is my GF's ipod and she had told me she was using it just fine, but once putting it into her bag, and checking it again the screen had gone entirely black. She'd charge it assuming it was dead but it had gone into a recovery/DFU mode loop. Everytime I plug it into my computer I receive a message that it is in recovery mode and must be restored. I remind you again that no combination of buttons will cure the screen at this point. Holding home + power button for a few seconds for a soft reset just shows the same message when plugged in. Anyway, as I try to update, the screen turns on showing the apple logo and loading bar, but then once the step gets to "waiting for ipod" nothing works. I've tried letting it sit there for over 2 hours, but nothing. I have yet to find a solution, and it's become quite frustrating. Please let me know if you have any idea how to fix this. I've tried messing around using different methods such as iRec, TinyUmbrella, Redsn0w recovery, messing with hosts files, firewall, etc.

I think you are experiencing a fake DFU mode you are always on black screen and iTunes prompt recovery mode.
I think links below can help on how to put it to proper DFU mode, avoid error 1600 and 1601 when restoring, and proper update or restore.

  • Ipod classic problems: screen and connecting to windows..PLEASE HELP ME!!

Ok, so I know many people have problems connecting their ipod classics to computers, it seems like it only happens to classics. But anyways, lately my ipod screen has also been doing weird stuff like cutting words in half..(example: instead of music it would show usic. etc.) Has this happened to anyone else? It has also erased some of my music, but luckily I was able to get it back. Does anyone know how to fix any of these problems?
    thanks!
    -krenny

I definetley think apple should work on that model, I've have friends who purchased a zune and haven't had problems with it at all since then. They did say it is difficult to find cases and car plugs, etc. for zunes though, I don't think I'd purchase one just because I like the way ipods work better ( controls, screen layout, etc.) but besides that I'd say they're pretty nice.
I just realized it was probably a bad idea to mention zunes on an Apple forum, but what the heck!

  • IPod Classic - Blue screen?

    Hello,
I was listening to my iPod classic, which suddenly stopped. Having thought I hit pause I tried playing it again but nothing happened. I took it out of my pocket to see this:
The iPod then reset itself and I was presented with the main menu. I started listening to music again and about 3 minutes later the same thing happened again. It hasn't happened again since.
Does anyone know what this means?
    Cheers,

Could just be a temporarily software glitch that corrects itself by rebooting or it could be early signs of hard disk damage, but we won't jump to such conclusions just yet.  If it continues, you may want to consider restoring the iPod to factory settings in iTunes. This process wipes all content from the device, resets all settings back to their defaults, and loads a fresh version of the iPod's firmware onto the device.  This should help eliminate any sort of software issue, but not hardware ones.
