IPod Touch intermittent volume increase

The volume of this ipod intermittently jumps substantially louder--for one to several seconds--before returning to the original setting.  The phenomenon is unpredictable; it occurs whether the ipod is in my hand, pocket or a stationary surface.  I'm unable to associate it to a particular environmental influence, e.g., electromagnetic interference (EMI), machinery, computer equipment, arrangement of celestial bodies.  The volume jump has not occurred while the unit is docked to a player, only when headphones are connected.  For the past several months I have been listening almost exclusively to podcasts and have no recollection of the phenomenon during music playback.
Ideas?  Suggestions?  3rd gen iPod Touch OS 5.0.1

All I cansugges is he sandard fixes:
- Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • IPod touch 3 volume and date problem

My cousin was using my iPod touch 3 when she came to visit. Now she's gone only one side of the volume works in earbuds which is the right. without earuds it sounds like the left side. Also the date and time keeps missing up. ex. my iPod touch 4 ran out battery this morning so I used my ipod touch 3. it said it was 10 minutes behind on normal time ,and that it was Jan,7 1972. It'll be fine for the next hour or less then flip back to the date.
    Any suggestions?
    ~thanks

The iPod only has one speaker so there is no left or right.
    - Have yu tried another pair of headphones to determine if you have an iPod or headphone problem.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod
If still problem that indicates a problem with the iPod, likely the headphone jack is bad.

  • 1st gen iPod Touch minimum volume too high

I have tried all the equalizer settings and sound check, this is really a problem when using in-ear headphones. Is this any different on the iPhone 4?

Select all of your songs in iTunes, right-click > Get Info. Then go to the Options tab and you'll find a slider labeled "Volume adjustment". Bring that down how you feel fit and hit OK, then sync your iPod touch.

  • Ipod Touch Intermittent Charge Issues

I plug my ipod touch in to charge it up. The beep sounds and the indicator on the top of the screen shows the ipod is charging. After a couple of hours I remove the device from charge only to find it hasn't charged at all.
I do a full reset (hold both buttons until unit restarts) and normally this cures it. Occasionally I have to do two full resets , and once I had to do three full resets.
The problem is intermittent and happens about one time in three. You don't know it is not charging without waiting. It can happen if directly connected to a computer, ipod dock, or ac charger.
The battery holds a charge well. When it does charge, there is no problem.
Is this a battery problem or a software problem?

The root cause appears to be the battery however you may wish to eliminate the software portion of the doubt by running a RESTORE on your iPod. Keep in mind that when you RESTORE then all information that you installed will be erased and the iPod will get back to its factory settings. You can then re-install everything via iTunes.
IF the issue persists after RESTORE then I would get the battery replaced.

  • 2nd Gen iPod Touch intermittent shut off and/or screen shots, blinking +

Hi - concerned, not very technical mom here, trying to help out my son. His iPod touch shuts off, goes to the front screen, takes screen shots, sometimes the touch works and sometimes it doesn't, it blinks, I am not sure what to do. Any and all very specific (remember not real techy mom here) suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.

I've had this same problem. It ended up being a problem in the hardware. Your going to need to take it to a Apple Genius Bar. They will help you understand the problem better.

  • 1st Gen iPod Touch No Volume control

The volume control in all apps and music just disappeared the other day, so I have no sound whatsoever. Didn't do anything different. The headphones are securely attached to the jack, I tried the "Reset all" option. Nada. What's next?

    Hi,
Does "Reset All" include resetting your iPod?  Try here for resetting your iPod:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430.

  • IPod Touch 3G Volume Issue

I've been trying to find information on my specific problem, and have not found anything helpful yet. My problem is not with the volume slider or buttons; rather, it's a problem with the volume itself.
Every now and then (but becoming more frequent), my iPod's volume will suddenly change, either before I even start listening to music or while music is playing. This is always accompanied by a loud hissing that was not present before. Once this issue shows up, the volume control barely works; turning the volume to minimum turns the music down by probably about two decibels, and is still painful to listen to because it's so loud. Turning it up does affect it, but again, only barely. It does not matter which volume control I use; whether the in-music slider, the lock-screen slider, or even the volume buttons. This problem persists both with headphones and the built-in speakers.
When I pause the music, the hissing continues for about twenty seconds, and then stops with a click/pop much like loud speakers turning off. When I restart the music, the hissing returns suddenly. This problem also applies to any sounds the iPod makes; the hissing will turn on for awhile (even if nothing is actually playing afterwards), then stop.
I have tried restarting and resetting the iPod, to no avail. (I have a feeling a restore will not work either, but I will probably try.) Either the problem goes away on its own, or it sticks around for awhile. It pops up without warning; I could be listening to my music for hours, and then suddenly the hissing comes and the volume goes haywire. It can disappear just as suddenly.
I have not dropped my iPod badly or spilled anything on it, and nor does this problem seem to coincide with an iOS update. But, I am willing to accept any possible solutions. Is this a hardware or a software problem? Is there anyone else who has experienced this?

If you go through the first 3 steps below and it still does it, it's most likely hardware-related and would need servicing.

  • IPod Touch, iOS6, "Other" memory increasing every sync?

I have noticed that since the "update" to 6.0, my iPod touch has an increasing amount of "other" memory with every sync. The amount of "other" increases by about 400 mb every time I sync it. Even when I synced it twice in a row with no new podcasts or anything at all that would have been different from the sync just performed.
I restored it from backup, and the "other" memory stayed the same. When it got up to 14 GB, I restored and set up as "new", and the "other" memory dropped back to normal, then immediately started increasing with each sync.
I de-selected the only 2 apps that have updated recently, the only thing I couldn't undo is iOS 6. Other than that, I have done nothing different than I've been doing for the 2+ years I've had it.
Is there something I have set wrong in the settings since it's a touch and not a phone? I didn't change anything when 6 was installed, should I?
I really don't want to have to restore this thing as "new" every month!

Thanks for your reply.  I saw those threads and a few others when I searched earlier, but not the one about Safari. I don't use Safari often, but I will try clearing the cache. That's the only one of those things I haven't tried.
I wondered what the "other" was a long time ago, and looked it up. It was behaving normally until recently, after the iOS update, when it started gaining .2-.5 GB per sync. And restoring as "new" didn't stop that, it only reset the "other" to a normal size.
I mainly use this iPod for podcasts & mp3, and watching videos. A few other apps, nothing new added or changed that I could maybe think might be the cause.

  • IPod Touch screen unresponsive

Okay, so my iPod Touch has become increasingly messed up over the last week and I was curious if I may be screwed here: it started with just that simple problem where the volume changes on its own, so I did a restart and it seemed to work fine for a few days except response time for loading songs/apps seemed slower and slower.
Then, the volume problem was back but the volume buttons wouldn't work and the screen constantly had the volume display and "headphones" on it. iTunes told me it was not able to read it or sync. Restarts didn't work, so I restored it to factory settings and it again seemed to work fine.
A few days later, the same problems came back, so I tried to restore it again--one problem, though: after restoring and going into the iPod menu to do set up, I found the entire touchscreen does not respond. From what I've seen Googling and on here, water/moisture damage is what's possibly effecting it, so I tried the "rice trick" (something that worked for a phone before) but after four days it's still unresponsive and at the "slide to unlock" screen.
Am I out of hope here? If I take it to an Apple Store to get it repaired, what's the expected cost for something like that?

Apple does not repair your iPod. They will exchange it for a refurbished one for this price.

  • IPod Touch 32 - weak volume

Hello iPod Touch users. Thanks for helping.
*My problem is that I only get weak volume from all media I play with the standard Apple earphones.* When I set the volume slide on the Touch to maximum, I just get medium level of sound - nice for podcasts when the room is dead quiet, but AWFUL for music! In the street, airports and on planes, the sound is even made weaker due to the ambient noise levels. At that maximum level it is useless unless used in a quiet place!!
Until this week all I have listened to has been podcasts and the weak volume has been ok until I used it at an airport lounge and on a plane.
*Today I downloaded my first music album and the same situation applies.*
*So, I went to a shop that has iPods on display to try out - the Nano I used nearly blew my brains out!!! So, I suspect I have wrong settings somewhere!!*
I went through the "preferences" and "get info" screens in iTunes (on my MacBook, running MS XP Pro) and did what the user manuals said to do - set sound to max..... blah blah....!
*SO, I ASK WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? HOW DOES ONE MAXIMISE THE VOLUME ABILITIES OF THE TOUCH? (surely it is not a weaker performer than a Touch?!).*
Thanks for your time and help.

    Hi
Have you tried checking that the volume limit on your Touch is not set low?
From your home screen go Settings>Music>Volume Limit.
Now scroll that all the way to the right if it is not already and this should increase the volume for all media played through the iPod.

  • Are the volume buttons on the iPod Touch 2G supposed to be different?

I have the 2nd generation iPod Touch, and the sensitivity on the two volume buttons are different. I was just wondering if any other iPod Touch owners could tell me if this is normal or not. On my iPod, to increase the volume you have to press the button till it "clicks" (the click is not odd, it's just the way a regular button clicks, just like the home button) but with the down button, I just have to tap it or press it firmly, it doesn't need to go all the way down till it clicks. Thus the down button is much more sensitive than the up button. Can anyone confirm if this is a normal feature or if there's something wrong with my iPod? Also, if it's not normal, is there a way to get this fixed? Because I've already installed an invisibleSHIELD on my iPod and I wouldn't want to get a new one and waste the shield...

There is no way to lock them. I would work through the general troubleshooting outlined here to rule out the possibility of a software, although it sounds more like a hardware one.

  • Significant Volume Reduction on Ipod Touch 3GS after upgrading to IOS 4.2

Hi everyone. I just would like to ask why there is a significant decrease of sound volume after my ipod touch 3GS was upgraded from 3.1 to IOS 4.2. Settings are the same and I haveven't changed anything, so I'm pretty sure its a software issue. Is there a way now to increase or recover the volume? I am planning to downgrade it back (if it is still possible) just to get back the huge volume of ipod touch 3.1. Thanks in advance guys.

I have had the same problem. I have put the same song on my standard Ipod and also my Itouch and the volume on the touch is considerabely lower when it plays through the Apple plug. When I play music through Pandora the volume is higher than the music that is uploaded. This has only happened since I updated to OS4. Any idea how to help with this?

I read somewhere in these forums that the volume bar appears when you connect the headphones and disappears when you disconnect them. You could try that.
