IPod Touch set to push, still have to open app for it to retrieve mail

It seems to me that setting my iPod Touch to push mail from the server should do just that. I don't expect to have to open the Mail app to know whether or not I actually have mail. I want to be able to look at the icon on the screen before opening the app just to find out, oh, I don't actually have any new mail yet.
Is this working as intended, or is my Mail app bugged?

If its not mobile me email account then you need to go to the me.com web page and login to your mobileme account.
Then click on the email icon
You will see a cog wheel with an arrow about 3/4 along the top of the screen
Click preferences and get it to check your other pop3 email accounts. Then it forwards these to your .mac /.me email address & will push them to your iphone/ipod touch.
The site says "After you have configured an external POP account, a link to check mail for this account will appear below your folders in the left pane of .Mac Mail. When you click this link, any new messages the account has received are delivered to the .Mac Mail destination folder you specified."
Hope this helps!
Unfortunately there is no way to set up "reply to:" for your personal domain email addresses as yet.... so I, for one, will be sticking to Blackberry email for a while yet. Sob.
