Ipod -usb port
Hi. Just got a 5th gen ipod. When I am done syncing my ipod with itunes I eject the ipod. I also use the "safely remove hardware" option in winxp. When I do that it turnes off the ipod. With my sons ipod {first video model] it stays on and charges. Mine will charge as long has I dont disconnect using the "safely remove hardware" option. any ideas?

if you just eject the ipod when it is done updating, it will still charge on your computer as long as you DON'T use the 'safely remove hardware' command. it doesn't charge the ipod when you disconnect it using that. just eject the ipod. when that is done you can also close itunes and the ipod will still charge. hope that helped.

I have a 2009 hyundai elantra with an ipod usb port, when I try to hook up my shuffle with its usb connector to my car, the stereo dashboard says its reading the device and then says the device is empty...therefore no music gets played or heard. What am I doing wrong? Or is there some sort of cable i need to be using with my ipod to get it to play in my car?Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Either you have accidently posted this in the wrong forum (this is the LiveType discussion board), or the fora are screwing up again (if they ever stopped). To answer your question, though, you need some kind of converter that will export only the audio. I'm sure there are many free solutions out there, but not being familiar with Windows, the only one I know off the top of my head is Quicktime Pro ($30).
Either way, your iPod problems shouldn't be affecting your caps lock key. -
New MacBook, New ipod, "Usb port drawing too much power" message?
I just got a new MacBook and ipod Nano, and when I plugged the ipod into the usb 2.0 port, a message came up saying a usb port was drawing too much power and would be shut down. i'm charged and plugged in, is the wire messed up, the port, or the nano?

Could anyone tell me what's going on with my ipod video 30g?
My friend borrowed my ipod for a file copy to his desktop, when I got it back and pluged it in the dock, the computer said: usb can't be recognized.
I am sure that the USB hub of my IBM is perfectly okay. And It is okay for the ipod to play music, photos and videos.
By the way, My friend's External Portable Hard drive also had the same problem after connecting to his desktop.
Have we got the Ipod usb port burned? Is there any way we can fix it?

It seems that many people are still getting the 'USB Device not Recognized' problem from time to time. Unfortunately there is no easy fix.
Firstly, it's recommended that you make sure every one of your motherboard drivers are completely up-to-date, but you probably already knew that.
In XP, after a USB port isn't used for a long while the USB driver built into the OS sets the OHCI controller to suspend. When you plug a device back in, it can sometimes fail to 'wake up' properly. This problem was supposedly fixed in SP1 but there is a related registry hack that may still be able to help.
Run regedt32.exe and navigate to;
HKEYLOCALMachine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Usb
Create the Usb key if it doesn't already exist. Under this key, create a new DWORD value called DisableSelectiveSuspend and give it a value of 1. Then restart the PC.
A long shot perhaps, but I recall having similar problems with a USB hub built into my Microsoft keyboard and adding this key seemed to solve it. It wouldn't hurt in trying .
Alternatively, removing all entries relating to USB in Device Manager and all associated USB drivers will force XP into refreshing the USB driver stack.
Begin by unplugging all USB devices, then use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall any USB driver software. Next, boot up into safe mode and go to Device Manager. Once in device manager make sure 'Show hidden devices' is checked under the View menu. Uninstall all device entries in this order;
1. USB peripheral devices (printers etc.)
2. HID and/or Composite USB (Human Interface Devices) You're using PS/2 input devices so you may not have this entry.
3. USB Root Hub(s)
4. USB Host Controller(s) (Universal or Enhanced Host Controllers)
Then boot back into Windows (not safe mode) and it should populate the Root Hubs & Host controllers again. Proceed to plug your USB devices back in, starting with your powered hub. Be aware that most USB printers and scanners need to have their drivers installed first before you plug them in.

My computer runs on Windows 7, and I've installed and updated the latest versions of itunes etc, but still to no avail! I've tried different usb ports, troubleshooting, etc... But it still says "One of the USB decuces arrached to this omputer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it".
The iPod is brand new, sent to me by Apple as part of the 1st gen replacement programme. I've been using the cable that came with the 1st gen iPod (I bought the first gen second hand) It always worked on my computer with the 1st gen iPod. So I was wondering, do you think I need to replace my cable in order for my PC to recognize my iPod or is it something else?

IPod is not recognized by my computer's usb port and itunes
Remove my ipod from the computer without ejecting it and now the ipod want turn on, it is not being recognized by my computer's usb port or itune. I have reinstalled itune and still have the same problems.
1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
3. Check the USB cable
4. Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job.
7. Check for third-party software conflicts. -
although it is doing what i asked it to do, i want it to charge, ok so it does it... although when i turn it on it's as if it's either not charged at all but only enough to have the apple icon on my ipod, once it's had enough (which is like, a minute) it switches itself off and carries on charging, sometimes it switches itself on but this just takes it back to step one. also, when i connect my device to the USB port itunes does not recognise it for some reason, i've updated the newest version of itunes recently and i've tried annother ipod on annother computer with the same USB cable, so it's either the newest version of itunes, my ipod or my computer. please help

i do have the required version of windows for this to work, my computer isn't a mac, it's a pc, hope this helps...how long have you had your ipod? mine did the same but after a while you need to get a new one because of the battery...

I have just today recieved a brand new iPod Touch 4th generation iPod with the latest update. Everything else on the ipod is working and my computer is able to read the camera fine, but iTunes cannot recognise it - even after restarting and trying different USB ports and cables. There is nothing at all coming up on the device list and iTunes is working as it would if I had no iPod plugged in. This is my first iPod on this computer and I have already tried redownloading iTunes. My computer is a windows XP computer. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this problem?
Since this is an XP machine, which version of iTunes do you have installed? Is it the latest version?
Have you tried starting iTunes, attach the USB end of the cable, then while holding the home button on the iPod connect the 30-pin connector end of the cable to the iPod...that is the recovery mode but also should make iTunes see the iPod.
If that doesn't work you may need to take the iPod back and have it tested by the genius bar techs to make sure the connector is not bad. -
How do I use my ipod in the car without it constantly charging? I have to use a docking cable into the USB port because the 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack I bought doesn't work with the ipod (although it does work with an MP3 player). My ipod is a 5th generation 80GB classic.
I know this is old - but did you ever get this working. Thinking of getting a 780 ti card and I have an older mac with the mini-displayport too.

When I connect my ipod to a usb port on my computer, I can see it in my computer as a drive for a few seconds and then it disappears. It can be seen under devices but as a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it. If I run trouble shoot, it states windows is disconnecting this device.
I can see it in itunes as a device. However, this is a brand new computer, running windows 7. My last one bit the dust in mid use. I want to save the songs on my ipod and to do that I believe I need to be able to see the files on the ipod.

Hope you did not connect it to a USB Hub, the sync cable must be plug in directly to a USB2 port at the back of the Desktop Computer.
If you have a spare Notebook, with iTunes, connect it to the Notebook, to check if the iPod is working or hung.
Can you iPod run and play songs, when disconnected from the PC? (Sorry, for just asking the obvious)
Anyway, just hard reset your iPod, so that we can start from scratch
1. if your iPod is hung, reset it by pressing Menu and Center button for at least 10 secs till the Apple logo, comes on. (this won't delete your songs in the iPod, if they are not corrupted))
2. Connect it back to your Notebook or Desktop.
if your iPod screen is dead, try charging the battery by connecting it to another computer. if it doesn't connect to successfully to another computer, it may need servicing.

Hey...i bought an ipod touch last month and i did not Realized that a piece of the usb port was missing on the bottom of the ipod touch. So every time i want to charge it on my dock it would not charge and i tried to us the usb for my computer and that did not work. I did not buy my ipod from a Apple store or online i bought it at a Army base that had a store called The BX. I dont have my receipt to return it, is there any way u can fix it. i plugged in my ipod and now i get the error message: Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled" - i have a MAcBook pro and now my USB ports do not work - can anyone help me ???
Sometimes you have to reset the SMC two or three times for it to work, don't know why. I've seen that error message before and 100% of the time it was fixed with an SMC reset. I suppose it's possible that your keyboard or mouse IS drawing too much power, do you have access to another you could try?

I am using my boyfriend's ipod and in the past, when i plug his ipod into my usb port on my sony computer windows XP, it has always appeared under 'my computers" where i could register my files. I had my itunes library for my ipod shuffle, so i never had any problems with my iTunes tracking my bf's ipod. a few months ago, i reinstalled my operating system and now when i try to plug in his ipod to his computer with his registered snyced iTunes so he could access the files and music on his ipod, the USB is not recognizing the iPod.
