IPod Video locking up

OK, I have had this iPod for a little over a year. Now when I try to get it to go to sleep (I customized the main menu so that Sleep is on the bottom) it locks up and will not respond until I toggle the Hold switch. This isn't a huge issue, but when I want it off quickly, it is a bit of an annoyance. I was just curious as to a solution.
If this helps, it is synced with 3 Macs and it has been dropped once on carpet.
PowerBook G4~Green iMac G3~Blue iPod mini~Black 30 GB iPod with video   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I had the same trouble with the ipod freezing up, then restarting on its own, then all my music was gone and none of the apps would run. I am currently syncing the ipod touch back with the pc to restore the music. I removed the app I was using when this happened (FlyTunes).
I have the 2.0.1 firmware installed and will let you know what happens.

I have the 5thGen iPod...connected to 1.8 Dual G5 Power Mac w/ current OS X Tiger/iTunes current version/. The First couple of days it worked fine video(Handbrake converted DVD's),songs all worked great.
The last time I charged the iPod it was stuck in (do not disconnect mode) and very very hot! I reset it and it came back up... Later some of the video files would play then all the sudden I would get thrown out to the Menu list... Now I removed all the fles from the ipod and tried to reload them (video and audio files) itunes/ computer locks up while updating
Has anyone had these problems? did I get a bad iPod?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 60GB iPod Video locks up

Anyone else having this problem?... it has happened to me on at least 4 different occasions since purchasing my new iPod a couple of weeks ago.
There are times when I go to start up my iPod... and none of the buttons work at all.. yes... it's UNLOCKED... but none of the buttons work... forcing me to reboot the iPod. On other occasions, I hit play... and it shows the play triangle icon in the upper left corner, but no music plays nor does the time advance. On top of this... I can still navigate all of the menus without nary a hiccup. The only other element not working when this happens is the 'chirping' sound that typically is made while scrolling through menus and such.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I tried all of these options as well. I had a black 60GB iPod up until about an hour ago. I returned it to BestBuy for a full refund. I am waiting for a new shipment to come in to buy again.. definately got a defective one. If it still locks up after you fix it you've got major problem...go back to the retailer or Apple before time runs out.

  • The video tab in ipod is locked- cannot load dvd (.mp4 files) files to ipod

I converted the dvd files to .mp4 files (Using cusoft).
The files were loaded in the itune (by using add files to library). I can play the dvd in the itune on my pc but cannot transfer the dvd files to the ipod because:
The dvd tab in the ipod is locked (white out). I can see the white out: [X] do not update video files .
Since the dvd tab is locked out I cannot transfer the dvd files to the ipod. I used the latest verson of itune and ipod programs.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You've posted in the iMac G3 forum - the users here, including myself, have little or no experience of using iTunes on Windoze. You'll be far better to repost your question in the iTunes for Windows forum.

  • Locked on BLANK WHITE BRIGHT SCREEN. Brand Spankin' New iPod Video 30gb

    Hi all,
I JUST opened my new iPod Video 30gb. When I hooked it up to sync and charge, its icon appeared in iTunes for just a second then disappeared. Then it locked on "do not remove" so I did a reset. Then I put in on the dock again and the same thing happened, it popped up in iTunes and my desktop for just a second then disappeared. So, I tried to reset it again. But now it will NOT reset. It is locked on a bright white blank screen. Any attempts at resetting and the iPod gives a weird chime and continues its blank bright screen. Now it will not do anything. It won't show up in iTunes, it won't show up on my Mac, it won't respond to ANY buttons on the click wheel or anywhere.
Geez, I just opened the freakin' box! And of course I can't find ANY phone numbers to get a quick answer from Apple. I've been with apple since 1984 and this is really intolerable.
    PLEASE HELP!
Oh yeah, and i CANNOT restore because it can't link to my MAC

Judging by the info on your post, you're in the US. Apple's tech support number is 1-800-APL-CARE. They're open 9-9 Eastern time.
    For the issue you're experiencing:
Hold down menu & select until you hear the beeping.
As soon as it beeps, hold down select and play/pause for about 10 seconds or so (it may or may not beep again).
See if you can restore it now.
If not, call Apple for tech support.
    Hope this helps

  • Only certain purchased videos locking up 30GB iPod video

What causes certain videos to lock up my 30GB iPod video, but not others? All the videos I have are either purchased or free podcast downloads; All from iTunes.
I transfer the files all the same way to my iPod, by clicking and dragging the file to my iPod in iTunes.
Some play all the way through without an issue.
Some start at the beginning and then lock up after 10 or 15 seconds and I have to reset my iPod because it won't let me do anything else.
Others start playing right in the middle of the video and then after playing for about 10 or 15 second, it locks up and I have to reset my iPod because it won't let me do anything else.
I performed the 5 R's, no luck. I checked out and compared the file properties between one of the files that plays and one of the ones that don't. They're identical.
I'm bummed because I'm paying for videos that I have to watch on my PC, not on my iPod. So what might be causing this problem?
HP 1.9GHz Intel Pentium 4   Windows XP   30GB iPod video with software version 1.2 and iTunes version 7.0.1

I have the same problem; at least there's more than one out there. One of the videos I downloaded eventually began to work (I'm not sure why) but it kept freezing up and the audio had horrible static. (When I played it on the computer through the ipod, it worked fine.)
I cannot find an article on this site that explains what to do about that problem and apparently you can't simply send an email to a tech support center to ask about it. I guess I'll have to bring it to a store...

  • IPod Video Connection & Sync Problem on Abit IS7 Windoze Pentium 4

    Hello,
I'm posting this to help anyone else out with the same problems. I'm using a Pentium 4 2.8ghz Processor on a Abit IS7 Motherboard running Windoze XP Home and 1 Gig DDR400.
The Motherboard is equipped with USB 2.0's and 1394 Firewire ports. I got a 30 Gig Video ipod the other day and was having a nightmare connecting it and syncing with iTunes.
It was hanging painfully slow and would sometimes eject the ipod, and lock up iTunes. I tried the 5 R's on the ipod, even reformatting the ipod. Still the same deal. For Kicks I plugged the ipod into my old G3 300mhz Blue & White Powermac. And it sync'd with itunes, and mounted fast. Even with the old USB 1.1's. That's when I knew exactly where my problem was.
Today I went to Stooples and Bought a Belkin F5U219v1 3 port USB 2.0 Card. My problems were instantly solved for the cost of a decent meal..

This drove me deeper into the insanity that already consumes my life.. I hope this will help out someone else before they too go completely nuts.

Yes all my other USB equipment works on the motherboards USB Ports. Laser Printer, Mouse, Razr Sync Cable, and a couple others too.
I was lost... When I figured out that it was the PC not my iPod I was beyond PO'd at myself for not seeing it earlier.
Here's a tip that card runs for 30 dollars, at staples Take 3 old ink carts with you, and you can knock 9 dollars off the price! It's a real screaming deal when you do that! If you see a Hp or Lexmark printer in the garbage nab the carts! Just watch your hands and clothes.
Glad to help someone else, and those two boards are REALLY Similar, they have the same disease crappy Intel Chipset syndrome. Last intel machine for me, when I upgrade I'll most likely go for a AMD, or maybe a new PowerMac If that's in the budget. At least the mac will hold its value for more than 10 minutes.

  • New ITUNES Does not allow me to sync and wiped out song on my ipod video

I was prompted to update my ITUNES software (7.02 I believe). Once I did this, it told me that I needed to update my Quick Time Software, which I also did.
I did as I was told and took my IPOD Video out on my walk. It deleted every song on my out except for two. When I attempeted to re synch the IPOD it will not allow me to do it.
The playlists on the IPOD appear to be locked.
    HELP PLEASE

I am having the same problem. My library is not showing up on my computer but is on my phone. The only thing on my computer is the 3 songs I just bought. My message says that my Iphone is synced with another library. I do not want to lose the 100+ songs on my iphone. I do not see them anywhere on my Mac computer. Should I sync or will I lose all music?

  • Burning ipod videos to dvds for viewing?

Is there any way to burn ipod videos onto a dvd for watching on a tv? I know there's some way to do it, but I don't know what it is. Anyone know of a program with a free trial i can find somewhere?

Videos purchased from the Itunes Store cannot be burned to DVD as they are DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected and thus locked. As with any DRM file, each has an embedded code within the file that only Apple knows. DRM locks you into where, what and how you enjoy the entertainment you paid for. You own it, but are restricted to how you use it. Hope that helps.

  • 60GB iPod video battery issue?

My 60GB iPod video has an issue where as soon as I remove it from its charger (plugged into an outlet), it says it does not have enough power to keep running and it shuts down. It gives off a very faint smell like something was burning from the inside, but I wouldn't have noticed it if it I hadn't lifted it up and looked at it very closely. I've been charging it for about four days now, and occasionally I would pull it out to see if it was still having the same issue. Sure enough it was, and strangely, when I plugged it back in, all of the settings would be reset (namely the time would refer back to 12:00AM). All of my files are still there, but when I plugged it into the computer, it would give the little loading circle and say "Please wait. Very low batter." The computer reads the device but not even as a hard drive (which I set it too).
Maybe the battery needs to be replaced? How do I know I can salvage my iPod?
*Note: I haven't had the iPod for a while. It was a gift from a friend and it seems like it was pretty used to begin with. I'd give it about two to three years since it was bought. The warranty is WAY over by the way

Yeah, an iPod is basically a small computer, with a locked down OS. If you want, my company www.dr-pod.com can replace this for you quite cheaply.
    Thanks

  • Reactions I get when showing off my iPod Video

So far, everyone I have shown my new iPod to has been wowed. It seems even a lot of non Apple types act like they have heard of the new video iPod even before I show it to them. They all are anxious to see the picture and screen quality. Everyone I have shown if to thinks the screen image quality is incredible, which I agree it is.
The very next thing they ask is "Where is the sound?"
Although I know my iPod is mostly for my personal use, there needs to be some type of non obtrusive speaker that we can attach or keep attached to at least get some basic sound through w/o having to pull out the ear buds.
I'd like to see a super thin yet full size speaker unit that sits flush against the back of the iPod, yet that has a small base that the iPod connector locks into. With the thinness of the 30GB iPod, and even a similar thickness speaker, the whole assembly wouldn't be much thicker than my old iPod Photo.
The other thing across the board that is interesting is people's reaction to the $299 price point. Everyone seems to think that is a good price, and are frankly surprised it doesn't cost more!
Finally, they are amazed by it's capacity. My iPod Video right now has close to 1900 songs, 1800 photos, and 34 videos, 2 of which are full length films. Out of the 27.8GB total capacity, I am only using about 10GB, so I can more than double my current content, which at the level of stuff I have on it now, amazes people!
    But.........
Yesterday I couldn't resist and took off the plastic film that was over the face of theiPod when I opened it. I quickly, in the same day, decided I didn't want to risk the screen getting badly scratched, so I put it in it's iPod sock, and took it to Staples, and got some PDA screen protectors and covered it right there in the store. Even with it being uncovered only for a couple hours, and barely touched, I ended up getting small scratches on the screen. My iPod Photo that I still need to sell after long usage still doesn't have a scratch on it. This new plastic scratches ridiculously easy!
But here's what kills me: these thin sheets of plastic film can take me using my fingernail to get the air bubbles out from underneath and still not scratch, but the surface of my iPod can't?? And what happened to this supeer strong polycarbonate that was developed for the iBook? Wouldn't that be tougher than this? Go even further back and try to remember the frosted clear plastic of the toilet seat iBook. That stuff never scratched.
I love my new iPod, but it is wrapped in screen protectors till I can get a case and a hard plastic screen protector for it.

I just bought my first video, U2's "City of Blinding Lights", from the iTunes store, & I can't believe how clear it really looks on the screen & of course it sounds great. I haven't showed it yet to anyone but my husband & he says it looks good.
I haven't taken the covering off of the front of my iPod since everyone says that it scratches so bad. I don't have anything on the back of it, so I'm trying to be careful not to get scratches on it. I haven't find a good case that fits it yet, but I've been looking.
I would like to put my concert clips from my computer on my iPod, but I really don't want to shell out $30 for Quicktime Pro. Anything else out there that's maybe free or at least cheaper?

  • IPod video / i wish.

I to have the same problem with my ipod video 30gb, it won't play any video
i just get a black screen and then it locks up, not sure how long i have had
this problem as its been a while since i have used video. What is the piont
of buying a video ipod if it can't play videos. The support team need to be
sorting this problem out as the problem is growing, i use to buy into the
Apple thing now i'm not so sure.

Not sure if you are still having this problem, but I think the issue might be corrupt or malformed data being written by iPhoto to the albumdata.xml file in your iPhoto library folder.
One common cause of this is having an ampersand in a keyword (e.g. "vacations & travel") and then using the keyword in a smart album. Having an ampersand in a folder in the Finder path where your library is located can also cause this, as can keywords that use foreign character encodings.
The quick way to find out the offending corrupt data is to download iPhoto Library Manager (http://homepage.mac.com/bwebster/iPhotoLibraryManager.dmg) and then point it to your iPhoto library folder. The album column will tell you the line number of the malformed data in the XML file, and then you can open the XML file, locate the line number and see what item is causing the issue. If it is a keyword, just open iPhoto and delete it. If it is a caption or other text, delete or rename in iPhoto. Do not edit the albumdata.xml file directly, as this file is automatically generated by iPhoto and any changes you make will be overwritten. (more detailed steps on troubleshooting this issue is at http://homepage.mac.com/bwebster/Documentation/iPLM/pgs/albumdata.html)

  • 30g iPod Video with Dead Hard Drive

Whoops... dropped my fancy 30g iPod Video while watching something. Now I have a nice paper weight.
I want to manually exchange the Hard Drive. I have the old one in my hands, but can't seem to get the exact same model. I CAN however find different sizes of various hard drives.
My question is simple: Is my 30g iPod locked to 30g? or can I pick up a 60g Toshiba Hard Drive? 80g? 160g?
I've done some searching and I can't seem to find the answer to this question. I've found people who have replaced with 'similar' hard drives (30g Toshiba for 30g), but haven't found word on restictions.
    Thanks for any info.

Check here, http://www.ifixit.com/Products/iPod-5th-Gen/95 . You should be able to put a bigger drive in you just need to order the correct reat case since it will be fatter.
