IPod without iTunes
Is it possible to add photos, not thumbnails to an iPod 5th generation without having iTunes installed on a computer? I will be travelling and would love to have the extra storage for photos if my memory card fills up.

Just because you use iTunes doesn't mean you have to buy every song from Apple's store. You can import your existing CDs or MP3s into iTunes without buying them again. You can use iTunes to manage your existing collection of music, and not buy any new music. (The vast majority of my music collection was ripped from CDs, not purchased from Apple's store.) Also iTunes has wonderful integration with free sources of audio content including podcasts, iTunes U, etc.
In my opinion, the main reason to get an iPod or iPhone is for the seamless integration with iTunes. If you decide you don't want to use iTunes, you probably are dealing with slightly more cumbersome music integration which is probably no better or no worse than any of the other MP3 players out there.
Reading between the lines of your original post, if you're concerned about getting locked into Apple's proprietary world when managing your music in iTunes, you consider using an industry standard format, like MP3, rather than Apple's proprietary file formats, such as AAC. Specifically, in iTunes, go to preferences, go to the "When you insert CD section", click on "Import Settings", and change from AAC to something like MP3. Not as efficient way of storing the music, but you're also not locked into Apple's file formats (and thus just Apple hardware/software). But if you expect to stay with iPods and similar Apple players, AAC is a fine format. But for those of us who play music on other players too (e.g. my TiVo), MP3 is a more flexible format. -

If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone and use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
You can also wipe the iOS device by installing the FindMyiPhone app on another iOS device and using that app to wipe the device.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

ALTERNATIVE METHOD TO PLAY MUSIC FROM iPod without iTunes
Hey all. I'm gonna post here an alternative way to play songs/videos from your iPod on PCs/notebooks without iTunes installed.
Let's say you're at work and wanna play music from your iPod but your workplace's PC/notebook has no iTunes and installation of any programs are not allowed. Well, what you can do is:
1) Connect your iPod to the PC/notebook
2) Enable viewing of hidden items/folders by going to Folder Options, click on the 'View' tab, next click on the 'Show hidden files and folders' radio button. Click OK.
3) Go to the drive of your iPod, you should see a folder called iPod_Control.
4) Open up the folder, and you'll see a few folders called: Artwork, Device, iTunes, Music and Tones. Open up the 'Music' folder.
5) In the Music folder you'll see a few folders named Fn (where 'n' is a number). Open up any of these folders and you'll find your music files in it.
That's it. 5 easy steps to play music without iTunes. However, when you wanna upload songs to your iPod, please use iTunes. Hope you all found this useful!!

And obviously you've seen that the music files have weird file names like FZYA and so on. iTunes automatically changes the file names when you transfer your music to iPod. To know what are the title and artist of the songs are, right click on any blank space of the folder, View -> Details. If Details shows you nothing, click View -> Tiles. Hope that helps you all.

Is there any way to delete files/songs off the iPod without a computer? That way I can import more photos [with the camera connector] when I see that I'm running out of space in the field?

Songs from External Hard Drive to iPod without iTunes
So I have only a quarter or so of my songs in my iTunes library, but I have a large enough iPod where all of my songs can easily fit on it. I want to upload new songs and albums to my iPod, but without deleting all the thousands of songs that are on it, but not on my iTunes library, if that makes sense at all.
Is there any possible way to do this? I was fiddling around with my smaller iPod to see if I dragged the folder onto the iPod whether that would work, but so far as I could tell it didn't.
Anyone have any suggestions? or Help? Or at least a definite answer that it just can't be done?You can't add playable songs to an iPod except through iTunes. Dragging songs from Finder to the iPod simply adds the audio files as it would to an ordinary flash drive, it'll store them but not play them.

Charging/Power Support for iPod without iTunes Installed
I have an 80 GB iPod that I load and manage on my home system. Is there a way that I can plug the iPod into the USB port on a Windows laptop that does NOT have iTunes installed and listen to music already on the device? I want only the power from the laptop USB which is a corporate machine, i.e., can't put iTunes on it. I tried it and I get the "Do Not Disconnect" screen and the device is unusable.
Windows XP ProLook on the system for new hardware found. Just eject it there and it should allow the regular screen to come up. If I remember correctly it comes up in the lower right hand side of the bar at the bottom of the windows screen.

The music sync is one way - computer to ipod. The exception is itunes purchases. File>Transfer Purchases
Everything on your ipod should also be on your computer and included in your regular backup of your computer. -

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

I have IPOD classic, and want to transfer all my cd's on to my ipod. I have itunes but my laptop will not support all my music which i want to put on my ipod.
If i transfer music to itunes then sync to ipod - fine - but when i want to delete a cd to enable me to put another one on my laptop (due to memeory)

please.You could use Manually Manage your iPod, but the problem with that is that if your iPod ever needs to be Restored, the procedure will delete everything on the iPod and put back on what it can find in your iTunes Library. So you would lose anything not on the laptop. Also, when you buy yourself a replacement iPod, once again, you will lose whatever is not in the your iTunes Library.
Manually Manage means just that. You manually move media onto the iPod. So if you subsequently change anything about a piece of music, such as modifying an incorrectly spelt song title, you would have to remove that song from the iPod, make the change and then put that same (now modified) song back onto your iPod.
Song Play Counts cannot be used when Manually Managing an iPod, because it's the Sync process that updates that information.
An alternative to this, is buy yourself an external hard drive to plug into the laptop. If you buy one large enough to hold all your existing music and possible future purchases, you could then move your iTunes Library and all the Playlists and song counts (using the correct procedure, which exeprienced users on this forum can help you with) to that external drive and continue to use Sync. Then, all the content of your iPod would effectively be backed up.
Using an external drive does mean that you need to have the drive connected and ready to read before starting iTunes - every time. If not, iTunes will fail to find you music and instead look on the internal drive. -
i'm away from my computer and a friend of mine and i switched mp3 players (he really wanted to see videos...he was amazed) and i heard a song on his dell DJ that was AWESOME and i want to just add that one song, i can get the song and have my cable to hook it up to a computer, but is it possible?

How to restore Ipod database without iTunes?
Hi,
My iPod mini is visible to any aplication except iTunes. I have tried all it sugested on the manuals to fix it and nothing worked.
Others applications like RealPlayer and Anapod can see that the iPod is connect but can´t show its content. RealPlayer says that the database file doesn´t exist or is corrupted.
The only way I can see my files is accessing the iPod-Control directory using windows.
If I disconect it from the Pc I can´t see the musics that are on it.
I have made a copy of the songs that were on it and now I want to know how to restore it without use iTunes, because nothing makes iTunes see it.
Is there any update link that still work on apple website, so I don´t need to use iTunes?

Sooooooo, you can't update your iPod without iTunes now?
Sounds like Microsoft OS/Internet Explorer type thing.
I DO NOT WANT ITUNES. It kills computers, it is not even close to being the best music organizing and playing software, and it is a pig on the PC.
But I do want to get the most up to date updater.
Shockingly, I use a 3rd party software to sync my iPod, one that is WAY better than iTunes and is no drain to the system, one that leaves my song information THEY WAY I WANT IT (Jimmy buffett is not country, Porcupine Tree is not rock, etc...). Anapod Explorer kills iTunes in every category and I have absolutely no need to download music from the iTunes store.
So why do I have to install it to update my iPod?
Apple, quit GOING BIG BROTHER ON US and let us download an updater without iTunes.
oh, and I had to reboot my mac all the time, unlike your commercials say.
Gateway m685 Windows XP Pro Also running Vista, and IT ROCKS1. Because it kills PC's. There are too many problems with it. It is a drain on the system. etc...
2. As the IT person at a company that does not want users accessing the web for music, we do not allow the install of iTunes on machines. We allow people to plug their iPod into their machines to charge, or run the updater if they die while at work, but do not allow music to be downloaded or purchased online. Therefore we do not want to install iTunes just to get the updater.
3. For home use, it is not even close to being the best music organization software. Once iTunes touches a file I have labeled and named in another software, it wants to change it and rename it and so on. It also puts a lock on music that you download, which shockingly, I do not like because I have 4 iPods, 6 computers, and to other systems that access my music, so I would like to be able to use that music on all MY machines. Every time iTunes updates, it likes to take over and I do not like that. No thanks, I don't want it on my machine.

it is still one of the most downloaded items, so I must not be the only one. Since Apple forgets they put out a previous version of their products, I don't see any updater improvements to my 1g, 2g, 4g and 5g iPods, so I think I am pretty set by just using the old updater.
