IPodTouch SDK for non apple bluetooth device

I need to know if I can programmatically connect my iPod Touch (OS 3.0) to a non apple blue tooth device using the Apple iPod SDK.
I know that I can connect my iPod Touch (OS 3.0) to other iPods using GameKit API, But can I connect to other non apple Bluetooth devices?

But can I connect to other non apple Bluetooth devices?
An iPhone or touch will connect to non-Apple branded devices via Bluetooth now, such as Motorola headphones or Jensen car stereos for audio playback and phone calls.
You need to specify what you want to do exactly if your plan is outside those types of connectivity. Other uses can include proximity and remote speaker applications.
You might want to look over the External Accessory framework, released with 3.0.
...keep in mind, however, that the only way to communicate with other BT devices via the EAF is if they are in the 'Made for iPod' accessory program. http://developer.apple.com/iphone/program/accessories/
However again.... Even though they communicate through standard BT connections, accessories need special hardware in order to process the data stream coming from the iPhone / iPod touch. Unfortunately, this may mean that any idea of communicating with generic BT devices won't work on iPhone OS 3.x.
If the devices you want to talk to are Bonjour-discoverable via WiFi, they don't need to be part of the MfI program. Does that sound like your case?
Also you may want to keep in mind that 3rd. party devs in the future may release dongles that connect via the 30-pin dock port, providing access to existing BT devices. If said devs opened their communication protocols, that might enable the goal of communicating with said devices.

I have just ordered a referbished Mac Mini. I know the Apple Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard does not need a dongle, but I am curious if non-Apple bluetooth devices such as a mouse need one?

No, they do not need a dongle. They can use the built-in BT

  • Would my iMac connect to non apple Bluetooth devices?

I have some ordinary speakers which are plugged in to a logitech Bluetooth adapter. If I were to buy an iMac, would it be able to connect to them or not? Also, it would be nice if someone could persuade me to actually buy an iMac, IS IT WORTH IT? :D
    Thanks

You should check with the system requirements for your Bluetooth adapter.  Regarding buying a iMac I would just say go to an Apple Store and play with a Mac for an hour, You will be coming  home with one.

  • Is it legal to convert the music files, which I have purchased in recent months, to the mp3 format and burn them on to a CD so that they can be played in non-apple music devices that dont support the M4A format?

Is it legal to convert the music files, which I have purchased in recent months, to the mp3 format and burn them on to a CD so that they can be played in non-apple music devices that dont support the M4A format?

Yes, of course it is legal.
To convert the format, follow one of these documents:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Save a copy of a song in a new file format
iTunes 11 for Mac: Save a copy of a song in a new file format
Also note that you have the option of buying your files in MP3 format in the first place, from Amazon MP3 or other online retailers.  MP3 files will work in iTunes as well as virtually every other player, program, and device.

  • Can the Apple USB charger be used to charge other non-Apple USB devices?

Can the Apple USB charger be used to charge other non-Apple USB devices?  I just purchased an electric toothbrush that uses a USB port to charge.  If I'm traveling, I would like to consolidate and take only one charger.  Would it be ok to use the apple charger for both items?

Yes, as long as your toothbrush doesn't require more than 5W power draw.

  • Airport Locks with non-Apple Bluetooth Mouse

I have an iBook 12" G4 1.33GHz 1.5GB RAM, internal Airport Extreme, Bluetooth, etc.
I have tried several non-Apple Bluetooth mice and they create the same problem: Airport stops working and when I put the mouse pointer on the menubar Airport icon it turns into a spinning disk. I have looked in the log files but can't see anything useful. I have to reset the computer to get it to work properly again. If I use an Apple bluetooth mouse this does not ever happen. I am trying to use the same Logitech mouse that I have used perfectly well for over a year on my Apple Mini G4.
    Any ideas anybody?

  • ISight not working for non-Apple apps under particular user account

I noticed that my iSight built into Macbook Pro 15" is not working anymore for non-Apple apps (Skype and Webex at least) and working for Facetime and Messages Beta under same account.
I tried to test it using different account on OS X with Skype and it is working great!
    I'm using 10.7.3.
    Any advice?

    Hi,
I take it that in System Information the camera is listed under USB items ?
Your speps say OS x 10.7.2
Have you updated to OS X 10.7.3 ?
If you have I would start with that by doing a COMBO Version (Not using Software Update)
This will be everything that has been updated since OS X 107 came out and may catch those hard to trace issues.
Using the FInder > Go Menu > Hold the ALT key and Select the Library that appears > then navigate to Preferences.
In here find the Skype .plist.
    Open it with Quick Look.
Can you capture that (Apple/CMD ( or ⌘) + Shift + 4 together (Also tap space bar at the end to get the Window) ) ? and post it here.
I don't use Skype and don't have the .plist to see if it lists the camera.
If it does it might pay to delete the.plist and force Skype to re-***** the hardware.  (It also depends how much of your other settings are in there)
In the meantime if you go to the Skype Preferences can you see a Preview of the camera ?
Can you turn Off access to the camera and turn it On again in Skype ?
Skype does use Flash Player to do the Video.
Is Webex a browser led thing that uses Flash ?
If it looks like it is a Flash Issue do you have the GoogleTalk Video Plugin installed (there is a standalone and it is part of Chrome) ?

  • Apple Bluetooth Devices and Rechargeable Batteries

    Hi,
Both from my own experience, and other posts on this forum, there seems to be a problem using Bluetooth devices, especially mice, with rechargeable batteries (symptoms, not being able to point, crazy tracking behaviour etc.).
I know that Apple recommends that non-rechargeable batteries are used, but in this day and age that seems a bit archaic and, well, not very eco-friendly!
So is there a good reason why Apple couldn't design (or re-design) bluetooth devices with re-chargeables in mind?
If there's anyone out there who has been able to get reliable performance from blue-tooth devices with re-chargeables, can you share some brands/details?
I've tried Energizer Ni-MH 2000mAh, and they do not work.
    PowerMac G4 Ai/Intel Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello Ellis:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Apple indicates that rechargeable batteries are fine for use in wireless mice/KBs (see paragraph #2):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86651#faq1
As the other poster correctly indicated, the voltage is lower in rechargeable batteries so they do not last as long as lithium ones. I use 2500 MaH batteries and the life is "reasonable." I do use an Energizer recharger that recharges batteries in 15 minutes (takes both AA and AAA batteries).
FWIW, I have not detected any behavior problems related to using rechargeable batteries - nor have I seen more than anecdotal posts that indicate such problems,

  • Problems Connecting Apple Bluetooth Devices in Windows using BootCamp

People are having trouble connecting bluetooth devices in windows 7 while using bootcamp. I solved the problem by clicking on bluetooth>ADD A DEVICE once windows has detected the bluetooth device you want to add. Now, right click on the device you are adding (make sure it's  "inside the add bluetooth
Device window "see below" ) it will say "select your device". Then tick the box beside "drivers for Keyboard, Mice etc.," under "Bluetooth Services" (see below) and it will search the internet for your drivers and automatically install them. If you have any problems post a message. Good Luck

Not sure if you can help me, but I can't add my phone or some bt speakers to my MBA2011 in bootcamp.  Drivers can't be found...and this is usually a problem of the bt controller drivers, not the device.
It does seem the apple bt drivers are gimped in bootcamp.

  • Can you still get store credit for non-Apple repaired phone?

    Hi all,
My brother has an iPhone 5 which recently has a malfunctioning screen - it is out of warranty so replacing it will cost $250.  My family is thinking of switching over to a different carrier and we were planning on returning our iPhones for Apple credit. I was wondering if I were to get a non-Apple certified replacement screen, would I still be able to return the phone for Apple credit? Or, if I were to go ahead with the $250 replacement, will I still get the full credit on the iPhone 5 back (valued at $375)?
    Thanks!

Some US Apple stores are now able to in-store repair iPhone 5-series devices...teh price for the screen is $149.  Check with your Apple store to see if they can do the repair.

  • ITunes HD content for non-apple tvs now?

So now that Apple are well and truly plugging their mac mini as a great device to play movies through iTunes onto your HDTV, will they ever come to the real party and allow HD content for download onto non apple tv products?!
The mac mini is great but it's crippled as an iTunes device if you can't buy or rent HD content.

Purchasing HD content in countries other than the US is
based solely on licensing agreements with the studios
and not an Apple decision.  Streaming to devices is a
different license than delivering a permanent copy.  And
streaming can also be limited from one provider to the next.
Bottom line, the studios decide what Apple can or cannot
    sell or stream.

  • Adapter for non Apple headphones?

    Hey all,
I know adapters exist that allow me to use none apple headphones with the Touch/iPhone, I just want to know which you guys think is the best?
The Apple, Belkin and Monster adapters all seem to have bad reviews, due to them being bulky and inflexible. Which would you guys recommend?
    Cheers!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The +iPod touch+ can use any headphones right out the box, no adaptors needed.
The iPhone will need an adaptor for some headphones. If you want advice about the adaptors best to ask in the iPhone forums as we don't have much experience of them here.
