IPS-4260 Traps

We would like to be able to generate a trap or some how determine if/when our IPS-4260 sensor goes into bypass mode. In addition, we'd like to be able to monitor the CPU, memory, and interface status.. It would appear the 4260 has limited monitoring capabilities.
Based on the IPS release notes, I have loaded the Cisco-CIDS-MIB, Cisco-PROCESS-MIB, Cisco-ENHANCED-MEMPOOL-MIB, and Cisco-ENTITY-ALARM-MIB into WhatsUp Gold v14.3. However, uncertain what to check for. I can see traps showing up; however, they are not descriptive enough to tell what is what.
How do we trap/monitor for bypass mode? Anyone else have traps/monitoring operational on their 4260?
Thanks.

After some research, finally was able to get the sensor traps to work properly.
I had to ensure the sensor was actually sending traps.
Once configured using:
service notification
error-filter warning|error|fatal
enable-detail-traps true
enable-notifications true
trap-destinations
trap-community-name
trap-port 162
I confirmed traps were being sent off the sensor using a tcpdump:
# tcpdump -ni ma0_0 udp and port 162
I also confirmed traps were being obtained on the monitor application - in my case WhatsUp Gold (system trap logs)

  • Does anybody know how to export the events log from a IPS 4260 ?

My company has a Cisco IPS 4260 and we used to get the log from the Cisco Security Manager but since July the software failed and now (December) I need to get / export the log from July to December that I think it is saved into the IPS.  Is it possible?   Does anybody know the command to see the saved log or the commands or procedure to export the log into a TFTP or FTP ?
I'll really appreciate your help, thanks.

No; That cannot be done. Only through a SDEE server.
Events are stored on a hard drive that the IPS has, if it has not been reloaded they should be there with no issues.
Get the application "IME". If I am not mistaken, you would be able to see those events there and I think there is a way to export them from there.

  • CISCO IPS 4260 CPU USAGE 99%

    Hi guys
I'm detecting something unusual on my CISCO IPS 4260. This device have 2 CPU's but only in one cpu is showing 99% of use, and the inspection load varies from 40 to 50, and sometimes 80, here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about.
Where can I start to troubleshoot why is showing this values.?
    Regards.

do you think is normal that the IPS signature with more hits is de SIGID 5575 (NBT NetBIOS Session Service Failed Login?
After doing some research it seems to be normal for a windows enviroment.
Here is the information I got
    Description
When a client connects to a SMB server (WinNT, Win95, Samba, etc..) a TCP connection to port 139 is established. The client then provides the server with its NetBIOS name and the NetBIOS name it wishes to connect to. If the name does not exist on the server, the session setup attempt fails and an error message is sent to the client. This could be an indicator of an attack.
    Recommended Filter
    Exclude internal networks as sources.
    Benign Triggers
The default alarm level for this is low because this happens during normal network activity within a Windows network. As an example, when mounting the C: drive from a Windows 95 system to a Windows NT system, numerous session setup failures can occur while browsing the file system.
As you can see you could excluded to stop triggering that, this is an informational signature

  • Best practices 2010 IPS 4260

    Hi everybody,
I was wondering if you know, how can I get the latest pdf file of the best practices of IPS 4260 series.
One client is asking us an official file in order to approve a request for change (RFC)
I mean, I want to update the latest signature into my IPS,  but I need first this file and when I have this file, the client is going to approve the change.
I need an official file, where I can show the importance of update the signatures into the IPS.
thanks in advance for your help.

Does the company also require a RFC for Antivirus/Antispam/Content Filtering updates?
They are just a signature update...
I'm sure a quick google search on the importance of keeping IDS/IPS signatures up to date would provide plenty of documentation...

  • IPS 4260 performance metrics

    Dear all,
In http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ips/6.0/installation/guide/hw4260.html (Installing IPS 4260), the following is mentioned: The 1-Gbps performance for IPS-4260 is based on the following conditions: 10,000 new TCP connections per second, 100,000 HTTP transactions per second, average packet size of 450 bytes, and the system running IPS 6.0 software. The 1-Gbps performance is traffic combined from all sensing interfaces.
The information in the manual does not include the following metrics: number of simultaneous sessions (not just the new ones) and number of sessions per second.
Can you please provide me with this information? (1 Gbps performance in transactional environment)

    Hi guys:
Recently I have a problem with an IPS 4260, I was trying to access through IDM and it won't let me, it always bring this message:

In fact I also cannot access through CLI, do you have any suggest.

    Bob:
I already solve the issue, I got access through CLI and I look at the SH VER that one of the engines was stopped so I create a service account which on I could access into the device and restarted the Engines. That solved the problem.

  • Cisco IPS 4260 - Monitoring

    hi!
we have installed two cisco ips 4260 in our test environment and want now to monitor the inspection load, which is from my point of view much more important than the cpu load, with the open source network tool cacti. I want to send alerts when a specific threshold has exceeded.
I already monitor the cpu load, the interfaces with snmp. Do you know if it is possible to get the value of the inspection load of the ips by snmp?
Which others parameters of the ips sensors are important to monitor?
    Thanks!!!

At this time the sensor's inspection load is not exposed via a SNMP OID.  There is an enhancement request to add SNMP monitoring of various sensor health metrics in a future release.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Both IPS 4260 is down - Application Failed Critical

Tonight was both my 4260 IPS appliance boxes, down.
Health Status for Failed Applications                   Red
Both IPS appliance have both interfaces down.
Gi eth 2/0 and Gi Eth 2/1 running in Inline-Vlan-Pair
When I reboot one of the boxe, both interface go up, but after 1-2 min they go down.
Now I have put both boxes in bypass mode and then both of their interfaces are up
I suspect that it's the new signature version 6.01 which is to blame.
Is there anyone who has experienced this?

    Cisco respone..it is a bug.
    Hi William,
I have got a response from the collaboration team. It seems that there is a bug , we have the following response from the developers
“Due to a bug in IPS software versions prior to 7.0.6, it is not advised to apply signature updates past S601 without having upgraded to 7.0.6 first. If a customer has applied S601 with no problems, there is no issue beyond having to upgrade to 7.0.6 to apply updates S602 and later.  If you have not applied S601 yet, it is advised to upgrade to 7.0.6 before applying update S602 and later.”
I am still finding some more details and would get back to you.
I am currently downgrading and having success.
    Downgrade from console
....unplug monitor port (prevent engine from running) .... reset IPS.....downgrade from command line to 600....go to gui turn off auto update....plug ports back in.
    Downgrade from ssh
shutdown monitor port (prevent engine from running) .... reset IPS.....downgrade from command line to 600....go to gui turn off auto update....plug ports back in.
    Thanks,

  • IPS 4260 implementation

    Hi,
just simple question regarding implementation of IPS 4260 inline mode between PIX and core router. IS it possible just to connect pix inside interface with one IPS interface, and another COre iterface with IPS interface and to create inline-interface-pair. Or I have to create another VLAN pair on Core router just to span traffic through IPS, using additional ports on router? Thanks on advance

Connecting an inline vlan pair to a "router" can cause confusion.
It all depends on what you mean by "router".
    ===========================================
If you mean "router" in the traditional sense where the device will IP route packets between 2 IP networks, then an inline vlan pair won't work for you.
Let's say for example that you have a router with 2 vlans configured. The router has an IP Address cojnfigured on the first vlan A, and also an IP Address on the second vlan B.
You create a trunk port on the router for the 2 vlans and connect it to the sensor.
In the sensor you then pair vlan A and vlan B.
    Traffic will not pass.
The sensor in effect bridges the 2 vlans together. So the 2 vlans are a single IP network. So the router's IP Addresses on the 2 vlans would have to be on the same IP network. Most routers will not allow you to configure 2 interfaces with 2 IP Addresses within the same IP subnet. But even if it did let you, then there would be no reason for the router to ever send packets through the sensor.
Let's say the sensor is connected on Gig0/0 and you have 10.0.0.0 addresses on the 2 vlans of the router being trunked to the sensor on Gig0/0.
You also have the 11.0.0.0 network on router interface Gig1/1, and a 12.0.0. network on router interface Gig1/2.
If a host on the 11.0.0.0 network sends packets to a host on the 12.0.0.0 network then the packets enter Gig1/1 on the router and go out Gig1/2 without ever going through the sensor. The router directly routes the packets and never needs to send them through the sensor.
Only a few occasional broadcast packets may ever get sent through the sensor.
    =======================================
Now, however, if you router device can have "virtual routers", then an inline vlan pair on the sensor could be usefull.
Using our example above with a 10.0.0.0 network on the 2 vlans on Gig0/0 connected to the sensor, a 11.0.0.0 network on Gig1/1, and a 12.0.0.0 network on Gig1/2, then you can get the packets to go through the sensor.
Configure 1 virtual router containing an 11.0.0.0 address on Gig1/1, and a 10.0.0.0 address on one of the 2 vlans on Gig0/0 going to the sensor.
Configure a 2nd virtual router containing a separate 10.0.0.0 address on the other of the 2 vlans on Gig0/0 connected to the sensor, and configure a 12.0.0.0 address on Gig1/2.
Now when a 11.0.0.0 host tries to send packets to a 12.0.0.0 host, the packet comes in on Gig1/1 but the router can not directly send the packet out of Gig1/2 because Gig1/1 and Gig1/2 are in separate virtual routers.
Instead because of it's routing tables (either through static routes, rip, eigrp, etc...) the first virtual router knows to send the packet out of it's vlan interface on Gig0/0 to the sensor.
The sensor monitors it and then sends it back on the other vlan of the inline vlan pair.
So it goes back to the router on Gig0/0 but this time on the other vlan that is part of the 2nd virtual router. And the 2nd virtual router sends it on to the end host.
The same then happens in reverse for packets from 12.0.0.0 hosts to 11.0.0.0 hosts.
So it is possible with 2 virtual routers.
BUT this is very confusing for most users, and is very rarely done in the field.
    =====================================
HOWEVER, SEE THE NEXT POST FOR WHAT I THINK YOU MAY REALLY BE ASKING FOR.

  • IPS 4260-70 Events to Saalt - RSA using PORT 443

I have a request to send all IPS 4260-70 on os vs 7.0.4(e4)  Events to Saalt - RSA using PORT 443.  I created an admin account, how do you configure the port 443?

    Edwin;
Cisco's IPS sensors do not send events by default; they make use of the Security Device Event Exchange (SDEE) protocol in a client-server implementation (the IPS being the server and the remote application being the client).  By default, the IPS will listen on TCP port 443 for SDEE connections requesting events or opening a SDEE subscription.  The remote application (Saalt?) should require configuring the IP address of the IPS and a username/password for logging into the IPS.  The IPS will need an access list entry for the remote application host to allow successful communication.

  • IPS 4260 rebooting

    Hi All,
we have new IPS 4260 installation. I run "setup" command at the begining, as soon as I connect management interface to Cisco 3750 switch, IPS starts rebooting by itself.
any idea would be very appreciated.

    Hello Alex,
Can you provide a session log of you running the setup command and the machine rebooting, and a "show tech" from the IPS? If you are currently connecting via SSH, please connect via console to gather the log.

  • Recovering IPS-4260 6.0 that is not completing boot sequence

    Hi all,
I have a 4260 with 6.0 Image that is not completing the booting sequence, it stops at "grub". As you are all aware, the 4260 do not have CD drive to boot from.
Any idea how to recover it. I downloaded the recovery image with .PKG extension but I am unable to find the procedure how to use it for the IPS recovery.
    Appreciate your expertise.

  • Cisco IPS Concurrent session support in ips 4260 and 4270 sensor

I am wondring that no document from Cisco IPS data sheets mention the concurrent session support in Cisco IPS 4200 series sensor. I am looking forward to any one who can advise about the subject.
    Thanks

    Hi.
with IPS devices it's difficult to measure performance by # of connections per second since several factors count to the performance limit, including:
    1- packet size.
    2- object sizes per transaction
    3- transactions per second
    4- signatures enabled
    5- features enabled
that why public documents try to make it more realistic by mentioning the transactional performance.
here is a link mentioning concurrent connections for 4270:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/vpndevc/ps5729/ps5713/ps4077/prod_white_paper0900aecd806e7283.html
although the link mentiones 100k and 200k, but we've seen situations where we had a lot more connections with a smaller amount of signatures enabled.
for the 4260 the public document only mentions the transactional performance.
    Regards,
    Fadi.
