IPTC support in iPhoto '08

I haven't yet taken the time to add keywords/tag my photos in iLife '06 because I was hoping the newer versions would include support for IPTC / XMP tagging of the files. Any word on this? Here's hoping.. haven't seen anything on news sites or on Apple's iPhoto "what's new" pages. I was also hoping for integration of the wonderful Keyword Assistant by Ken Ferry (http://homepage.mac.com/kenferry/software.html) but I haven't yet seen how keywords are added. Dragging and dropping is less than ideal.

iPhoto will write the ITPC keyword, title and description metadata to the files when they are exported vie the File->Export->File Export menu option and the option to include Titles and keywords is checked. However, they are not written to the files that are in the library, only those exported.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • "one or more of the items in your selection contains Aperture albums that are not supported in iphoto".

I have some folders in iPhoto called 'Recovered Folder'. When I try to delete them I get this message: "one or more of the items in your selection contains Aperture albums that are not supported in iphoto".
I don't use Aperture (did install it to try it out), and have deleted Aperture App from my Mac.
How can I get rid of these fodlers?

    i finally figured this out:
fyi, iphoto and aperture can now share (i.e., access) the same library. apple details it here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5260?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
i use both iphoto and aperture, and i suspect something went amiss, at some point, while aperture was accessing my iphoto library.
this is how i fixed the problem:
i launched aperture, then (per the instructions linked above) switched to (i.e., accessed) my iphoto library. i was then able to delete the "recovered folder" and the album it contained. i then quit aperture and relaunched iphoto.
NOTE: at that time, although i expected the "recovered folder" to be gone, it was still present. but this time, i was able to delete the folder from within iphoto without the "contains aperture items" error message.
(Sparky030405, i realize you've since deleted aperture. while i can't say my method is the *only* way to solve this problem, it's the way i was able to solve it. so, you might consider reinstalling aperture in order to delete the folder, then uninstalling aperture, once again.)

Nope - although typically Nikon RAW is supported fairly quickly - what version of iPhoto and of the OS do you have?

what does this mean "We apologize for the inconvenience, but the ability to order books and prints is no longer supported in iPhoto 5. Please upgrade to a newer version of iPhoto to order these products." I want to buy a photo book and that message keeps popping up.

TD, LN - You guys make great points and I will take you at your word. Normally, I would not hesitate to update. I have a lot at stake here with a large vacation coming up with a great many new pictures anticipated. I don't know enough to understand what is meant by "verifying my library." Please give me some insight there and I will start the upgrade process tonight! Seriously, I have wanted to do this for some time, but have been scared away by reading too many situations on these forums.
TD - you have a good sense of humor. I know all versions eventually need to be left to die away. Support is not eternal. I am sure I missed the announcement that certain versions of iPhoto would no longer offer the ability to conveniently make cards, calendars, books, etc. Like the original poster, I was surprised to learn my version did not offer that functionality only by requesting it and getting denied. Sort of frosted me at the time, as you can tell by my original reply here.
If anyone can help me with the "verifying" question, I'll get off of here and let the original poster have his thread back!

  • Konica Minolta Dimage A200 supported in iPhoto 5?

    Hi.
I am considering replacing my Canon IXUS v2 camera with the Konica Minolta Dimage A200. Primarily because it has a 7x optical zoom and 8MP resolution. But I can't find any info on whether the A200 is supported by iPhoto 5. I've checked Apple's iPhoto compatibility website and it's not listed (but the Konica Minolta Dimage A2 is!) and all I can find on Konica's website is that it's supported by Mac OS 10.1 - 10.3. 10.4 isn't mentioned and iPhoto isn't mentioned.
Anybody have any experience with the A200 and iPhoto? Alternatively, can anybody recommend an alternative camera that is fully supported on the Mac. My main requirements are: optical zoom (at least 7x), resolution (at least 5MP) and build quality.
    I have a G5 iMac running Mac OS 10.4.2 and iPhoto 5.0.4
    Thanks,
    Stuart

    Hi all,
I contacted Konica Minolta tech support and they confirmed that the A200 is supported under Tiger (10.4) and should also work with iPhoto. Here's the email I received:
"The camera will work on OS Tiger but we cannot comment on iPhoto as it is not one we have tested it on however we provide software called DiMAGE Viewer which will work with the camera. We have many customers using the camera with Tiger with no issues."
I then found the following Mac OS compatibility info on Konica's tech support site:
    http://www.konicaminoltaphotoworld.com/kmsupport.com/Compatibility.3036.0.html?& L=0#).
To summarise, Konica state that Mac OS 10.1 - 10.3 are fully supported and limited testing has shown that 10.4 works as well. There's no mention of iPhoto compatibility. The document also mentions possible file corruption for transfers over 10 mins and issues with date and time info not being transferred to the Mac. I thought these were a tad worrying so I sent a follow-up email to Konica tech support. Here's the reply I received:
"It should work fine with Iphoto. The information regarding MAC OS X.
There can be corruptions with transfers of over 10mins but not necessarily and therefore it is recommend to split transfers and also the data and time may not be transferred correctly and these I am afraid are issues which should be resolved when newer DiMAGE Software is released, however they might not occur at all and is only a precaution."
So... it's all a bit vague. Seems like it will definitely work with OS 10.4 but you might get some of the problems mentioned above... and then again you might not! Also, in the above reply, Konica mention that these issues should be fixed in a new version of their DiMAGE software. So maybe these issues don't occur if you just use iPhoto? Who knows....
I'm still trying to decide whether the A200 is the camera for me.
    Cheers,
    Stuart

  • Which file formats are supported bij iPhoto?

Which file formats are supported bij iPhoto?
Where is this kind of info written?

There is no comprehensive list released by Apple that I am aware of.
Here is what the help menu says: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/8.0/en/6303.html
For best results I stick to JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF which are fairly universal standard formats.
If you are working with RAW here is a list of supported RAW cameras: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3825
Was there a particular format you were trying to use?

At the last MacWorld I was encouraged and inspired to shoot more and to shoot more in RAW by all of the speakers. any help would be appreciated.

  • Nikon Coolpix 990 not supported in iPhoto 11 v9.4.2 on OS x 10.8.2

I am running Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard in separate partitions on the same iMac(Intel i3).  I can import photos from my Nikon Coolpix 990 camera using iPhoto 11 v 9.2.3 running on Snow Leopard.  I cannot import photos when running iPhoto 11 v 0.4.2 on Mountain Lion.  The camera shows up in the USB section of the system report.  Is anyone aware of this problem and how to fix it?

I removed my photos and formatted the camera's flash card but it didn't help.  I spent an hour on the phone with Apple and they couldn't resolve the issue either.  The support person is forwarding the problem to Apple engineering.
    Thank you for your suggestions.

  • Importing IPTC keywords into iPhoto

I have >10,000 photos from my research project with imbedded metadata including four keywords. These are in the IPTC field separated by commas.
    keyword_1, keyword_2, keyword_3, keyword_4
When I import these into iPhoto I get a single keyword
    keyword_1, keyword_2, keyword_3, keyword_4
If I click to edit this keyword, it immediately is broken into four separate keywords plus the original one.
    keyword_1, keyword_2, keyword_3, keyword_4
    keyword_1
    keyword_2
    keyword_3
    keyword_4
The four individual keywords are what I want but I have to click on the keyword of each photo to achieve this. Extremely time consuming.
Does anyone know if iPhoto can be made to import each keyword individually or a faster way to make iPhoto convert these to the correct format? I do have the ability to edit the IPTC data via terminal scripts so I could modify the original IPTC data if I only knew what iPhoto needs to import properly.
I tried using semicolons to separate the keywords.
    i.e. keyword_1; keyword_2; keyword_3; keyword_4
This failed as it just gave me a single keyword that no longer was automatically edited upon clicking.

    Hi Phil,
I originally started this on your ExifTool forum. A chap there graciously provided, and helped to refine, a script using ExifTool which has me 95% of the way to my goal.
I'm not a programmer so my understanding of the script is incomplete. It first extracts the data from a csv file and then uses ExifTool to write that data to the jpg files. I copied what I believe to be the relevant sections hoping that maybe someone here could spot the error.

The keywords are written into both the IPTC:Keywords and XMP:Subject fields of the metadata. I'm not sure why they are written to both or which field iPhoto imports keywords from.
I added the 1_PHYLUM_, etc tags so that the keywords would sort in the correct order in iPhoto.
Strangely enough, the keywords are imported into Picasa as individual keywords but sort in reverse order.
I'm studying your exiftool faq now.

hi guys..previously i was using iphoto 08 and now just got myself an iphoto 09 version 8.1.1(419),but i still cant seem to import my RAW files from A850 to my iphoto, jsut wondering..is there any support for my RAW?anything i could update to make it work?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If your camera isn't listed here then it's not supported: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1475.
If the camera is relatively new it will be a while before it gets supported. Keep checking the Apple Downloads page frequently for new RAW format updates.

  • Help!  No longer supporting older IPhoto, need to get Iphoto 5 on a mac

I have an old version of IPhoto and as of 11/1 they are not going to support the picture and book add ons. Does anyone know if you can upgrade to Iphoto 5 without having a intel based mac? That is the last version that they will support. Thanks....

You can update to iPhoto 09 without an Intel Mac. You can update to iPhoto 08 with 10.4.11.
You’re not limited to iPhoto 5. You can go for iPhoto 6 or iPhoto 08 without changing anything on your machine
