Is a digi decoder worth it??

hi i have a megaworks 550 surround sound setup with an audigy 2 sound card and i've been loving the sound it chucks out for a good two years now but is a decoder really gona improve sound?
i find surround sound is immense on pc games but im sure it doesnt really work on a lot of films, only ones like saving prviate ryan, and even then i have to turn it up to distinguish the sounds to each speaker, believe me i have played with the setup enough and have optimised it but am i really missing out?

a decoder is definitely worth it, providing:
- you have good speakers - your MEGA system is more than adequate;
- you are talking about movies, not games;
- you are connecting a DVD player to watch movies, and enjoy its sound tracks.
Reasons are simple:
- There is no way to connect your sound card to the Creative decoder, digitally. Surely, there are analog connectors on the decoder that receive sounds from the sound card, but that's analog after all, and a decoder would be useless in this set up;
- The SPDIF connection on your sound card can transmit digital - but that's only for stereo.
- Only the optical and the coaxial connectors of your DVD player can transmit 5.1 sounds digitally to your decoder, and that's the way to use it to its ultimate potential.

  • Will Xbox, Logitech X-530 5.1 speakers and Audigy 2 NX combo decode dolby digit

    Hi there
    I have a Xbox, Logitech X-530 5. speaker system and Audigy 2 NX sound card. I want Audigy 2 NX sound card to decode dolby digital from its optical-in? (optical in is from the XBOX) .. Is it possible? If yes, how? If not, what is the solution? Can Extigy external sound card do it's
    Also, can be Audigy 2 NX external sound card be stand alone instead of always being connected to the PC? I just want it to be connected to XBOX to decode dolby digital 5...
    Thanks!

    it is relevant for me to post in here as someone was asking if the aud 2 zs plat dri'ves optical in or coaxial in could be used for connecting up to an external source sch as dvd player, xbox.
    And i am in technical supports hand about my prouducts, so if yo u ban me i will be insisting they take action against you , as i have a valid reason for posting into these forums.
    I have spent over ?3,000 on creative proucts, and the last 2 things i purchased from, creative cost ?450 the gigaworks s 750 speakers, and the audigy 2 zs platinum.
    And therefore i am entitled to speak the truth.
    Some one asked if the connection is possible, i am not the only person using the hardware that is having decoding lag whilst using optical in on li've dri've, it's just that not many people that have this hardware are using it like this, so they don't realise that they will have problems if they ever decide to use external dvd players, instead of the software ones like powerdvd windvd etc.
    I am forwarding this entire thread to creative technical support guy that i am dealing with so he can see i am not doing anything wrong, you need to look at my other post with regards to the audigy 2 li've dri've having the exact pcb model number revisions etc, as the audigy2 zs platinum li've dri've, and that the combination of the audigy 2 li've dri've not being a connection that creative will offer support for, which is another thing i will be asking creative when i phone tech support up tomorrow, as i want to speak to someone higher up about this.
    And you say you are testing this at home and cannot replicate this issue.
    Can i ask what speakers you are using.
    What soundcard are you using, are you using the aud 2zs plat version not the plat pro version.
    Also what make of dvd player are you using to play dvds on, what spdif option your using in external dvd player ?
    And what are the model numbers on your audigy 2 zs platinum li've dri've motherboard ?
    Also what driver version are you using for the zs plat card ?
    As i have used the supplied disc version, and updated to latest versions makes no difference.

  • DECODING MAIL FROM WEB SERVER IN PLAIN TEXT FORMAT(THE MAIL BEING SENT BY LABVIEW APPLICATION)

    Hi All
    I have a labview application that send mail every hour automatically.
    But actually the mail has to be decoded from the web server(by another application).But now when that application decode the data in the mail(that is send by labview application)its getting some funny characters inside that can not be detected by the decoding application
    (When open the mail no problem.)But actually our goal is to decode the mail from the web server.
    Why the extra characters are appearing when decoding from the server?Is it because of the HTML format?
    Is there option to send the mail in plain text format(not like attachment)?
    In outlook we can change the setting (tools->options->send->mail sending format->....here we can set as HTML format/Plain Text format)
    Like that at the sending time can i chenge the sending option as plain text format in my labview application?
    Thanks...

    smercurio_fc wrote:
    Then it sounds to me like this other application is not decoding the attachment correctly, especially if you looked at the attachment yourself after you received it and verified it's correct.
    No, no, smercurio. This is charcter encoding here. In older versions of LabVIEW you could specify what character encoding to use when sending an email through the SMTP VIs. But that gave problems since people in certain locales used certain characters that where not transfered right when the wrong encoding was specified, and that encoding stuff is not understood by most people at all, so the wrong selected encoding was rather the rule than the exception. In newer versions of LabVIEW do the SMTP VIs handle the encoding automatically based on the currently used locale on the system.
    This change is documented in the Upgrade Notes of LabVIEW and probably happened around LabVIEW 7.1 or 8.0.
    A decent mail client will recognize the encoding and convert it back to whatever is necessary before presenting it to the user. The OPs posters server application obviously isn't a smart mail client but probably just some crude text file parser that has no notion of proper mail character encoding and how to deal with it.
    I would suppose that there is a chance to dig into the SMTP VIs itself and try to manipulate or disable that encoding altogether in there but that may open a whole can of worms somewhere else. The proper way would be to process the incoming mail by a character encoding aware mail client before passing it to the text parser. On Unix setting up something like this would be fairly trivial.

  • Preventing Discoverer using Full Table Scans with Decode in a View

    Hi Forum,
    Hope you are can help, it involves a performance issues when creating a Report / Query in Discoverer.
    I have a Discoverer Report that currently takes less than 5 seconds to run. After I add a condition to bring back Batch Status that = ‘Posted’ we cancelled the query after reaching 20 minutes as this is way too long. If I remove the condition the query time goes back to less than 5 seconds. Changing the condition to Batch Status that = ‘Unposted’ returns the query in seconds.
    I’ve been doing some digging and have found the database view that is linked to the Journal Batches folder in Discoverer. See at end of post.
    I think the problem is with the column using DECODE. When querying the column in TOAD the value of ‘P’ is returned. But in discoverer the condition is done on the value ‘Posted’. I’m not too sure how DECODE works, but think this could be the causing some sort of issue with Full Table Scans.
    Any idea how do we get around this?

  • Values not showing up for 3 digit zip code maps of states

    I've been tinkering with an app that displays the US, with a query that shows how many folks we have in each state. The link takes you to a page that displays the state/zip code style map. On the map of the US, I can see the label and the value from the query for all states. But in the state map, all that shows up are the labels. I have the map set to show values, but they won't display.
    I'm using APEX 4.0.1 in a 10.2.0.4 database running on Windows.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi mjblake,
    The Map Region columns (i.e. REGION_NAME, REGION_ID, etc) can vary for each Map source .amap file. So it's definitely worth referencing the AnyChart Map Reference Information when you're adding your map series query, to ensure that your query is referencing data that's actually contained in your chosen .amap file.
    By default, the wizard will set the "Map Region Column" to REGION_NAME, as this the default AnyChart column. However, some maps, like the US State Zipcode maps, don't actually have a REGION_NAME column in their data, which is why you would need to update the "Map Region Column" on the Map Attributes page to your chosen column e.g. REGION_ID. In the case of the US State Zipcode maps, the available columns are REGION_ID, CENTROID_X and CENTROID_Y, as shown in this example: http://anychart.com/products/anychart/docs/users-guide/map_reference/United-States-of-America-3-digit-ZIP-Code-Maps-for-All-50-States-Alabama-Flash-Map.html?fromtree. You may not be aware of this, but when stepping through the Create Map wizard, on the 'Query' page, there's a Show/Hide region called "Map Region Information", which displays the AnyChart information associated with your selected map.

  • Is the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS worth the money for Final Cut Express?

    Hi,
    I'm considering a new iMac 24, but not sure if the speedier on is worth the money.
    Currently I use a MacBook Pro 2.2 for Final Cut Express with a 23" cinema (mostly DV, some HD) and that works okay, but won't play back in real time when I composit video.
    Anybody know if the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS will help in that area?
    Thanks,
    KC

    The speedier video card is great for 3D stuff, but it won't matter a wink for Final Cut Express, which barely makes use of the video card.
    Keep in mind that Final Cut is using the CPU, not video card, to perform the editing, decoding, and encoding of the video. The only time the video card comes into play is during playback of the video, and any of the video options available for iMacs will handle that just fine.
    When you composite video, the hard-disk throughput will start to come into play. The dinky 5400 RPM disk in your laptop will adversely affect the performance of that.

    Are you sure that you are using CAD 6.9.2 with OS
    10.4.7?
    I read on Digidesigns website that 6.9 will not work
    with 10.4
    Try reinstalling all of it,but before you do...uninstall all of it...and double-check to make SURE there is nothing left of Digidesign's software anywhere...a pain..but worth it.Also,run your maintenance scripts before the re-install,and then immediately after.
    Then...run PROTOOLS first...and set it up correctly.DON'T run Logic first...Then run your AMS (audio-Midi setup) and make sure you have all your harware set up there,and choose under Audio devices to use Digi as the default input and output,but your system's sound can be left as internal.
    logic pro should now see the Digi interface.This is due to logic looking at AMS for info as to what audio interfaces are there in the system to begin with.
    I hope this helps you,

  • How to convert/decode .mod file?

    I just got a JVC Everio (can't remember model number) HDD camcorder that records mpeg-2 videos with file extension ".mod". Can I decode these files with Final Cut, or any other apps in the studio? If no, what else can I use to do this? I really want to start editing my vid, but can't until the footage is in a usable format.
    Secondarily, I noticed that all the .mod files come coupled with .moi files. I haven't bothered with them since I can't open them, but what are they? Not important, just curious.
    Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    I can't. Final Cut doesn't even recognize the file to begin with, so I can't export it on the back end. I've tried with the software provided with the camera, but it's really sh*y and only worth keeping so I can view the files until I figure out a better way.
    I read somewhere else that others have had success simply renaming the file extension to .mpeg. I'm reluctant to do this because 1.) I don't want to lose quality, audio, etc. and 2.) if that's what JVC expected us to do, why didn't they just record the vid in that format to begin with?

  • Decode affecting query performance

    Hi. We have a system that holds two account numbers, in 8 digit and 12 digit formats. I have a screen with an input box where the user can enter either style account number.
    So the select I need to do, must be conditional based on the type used. I've got it working by checking the length of the account number entered:
    select column1 from table1
    where decode(length(:P1_ACCNUM),12,accountno,accno_8digit) = upper(v('P1_ACCNUM'))
    but the performance has gone from instant, to about 3 seconds. In TOAD, the query is unaffected, so maybe it's the subsitution of the variable. I've tried the way coded above, and v('P1_ACCNUM') but there is no difference in Apex.
    Does anyone have any ideas on this?
    Cheers

    (NR - Business as Usual.)

    Hi George. Initially, the code only supported the 12 digit account number,but you know what users are like! So the original query was coded to say
    accountno = :p1_accnum
    The decode was necessary because I had to do the comparison on another column. Both columns are indexed.
    As I say, putting the length() function (and I also do an UPPER conversion too) in hidden fields and using them has made it perform perfectly again. If I had more time, I wouldn't have coded it like this, but it's an urgent throw away application to perform quick account queries.
    Thanks for your response.

  • Using DECODE

    I am having proplems using decode. I need to take values from on feild and decode them to a yes or no in another. If the value is 1 then = yes, if null or 0 then no.
    the feild that i am decoding has 5 values like 11111 would I use decode in a post-record trigger
    DECODE(substr(:sites,1) '1', 'Yes', 'null','No'...)
    Thanks
    Sean
    null

    Hi Sean,
    The previous answer will work if there was only one row to be created. If you need 5 rows then do it this way. In the post-insert trigger of the sites block :
    if :sites like '1%' then
    insert into table_name (Process Order,
    Instance,Description,Replicated)
    values(:PROCESS_ORDER, :INSTANCE, :DESCRIPTION, 'd09 ATLANTIC YES');
    else
    insert into table_name (Process Order,
    Instance,Description,Replicated)
    values(:PROCESS_ORDER, :INSTANCE, :DESCRIPTION, 'd09 ATLANTIC NO');
    end if;
    You do this for each of the digit of the sites field. for instance for the second digit :
    If :sites like '_1%' then
    insert into table_name (Process Order,
    Instance,Description,Replicated)
    values(:PROCESS_ORDER, :INSTANCE, :DESCRIPTION, 'd09 PACIFIC YES');
    else
    insert into table_name (Process Order,
    Instance,Description,Replicated)
    values(:PROCESS_ORDER, :INSTANCE, :DESCRIPTION, 'd09 PACIFIC NO');
    end if;
    And so on ... At the end be sure to commit the form. then when you hit the explain button and go the the other block, have execute_query in the code so that the query is executed and it brings up these 5 rows. Be sure to link the 2 blocks with a column.
    If you could email me your form I can explain it better. My email is [email protected]
    Hope you could make sense of what I wrote.

  • Can I use my plugins I bought at the Digi store in LE 8?

    I'm leaving ProTools LE 7.4 for LE 8. Tired of the Digi hassle and problems with the mBox and my iMac. I have a bunch of plugins that I bought from the Digi store including Sans Amp, and some Joe Meek and Bomb Factory stuff which I like, but don't use a whole lot. They came in RTAS and AU format. I clean uninstalled PT, and that left the plug-ins on my iMac. Can I use them in LE 8? I have the licenses for all of them on my iLok for what that's worth. Thanks! I'm also using Apogee Ensemble now.

    As long as they are AU's, they should be usable in LE

  • Decoding of an object ID

    Hi all!
    I have the following problem regarding the database table CDPOS in APO: For instance, if the "proposed strategy" of a product is changed in /sapapo/mat1 the database table CDPOS contains the respective change log. In this case the field "OBJECTID" of CDPOS is comprised of a planning version (3 digit), the product number (x digit) and the location number (x digit) without spaces between them (For instance, 001123456VDE50 where "001" represents the version, "123456V" represents the product and "DE50" represents the location). The lengths of product and location numbers might vary - now is there a descent way to decode this ID so as to obtain the material number and the location number separated from each other?
    Many thanks in advance

    Iam sure you would have figured out the answer by now - but just thought i would reply. Use the table key field (TABKEY) in CDPOS. It has spaces between product number and location number.  There are no spaces between the version and product number . But you can extract the version and product number and eliminate the first 3 characters to get the product number

  • Digi@nwhere A/D Plus on Windows XP MCE (not working with Media Center)

    I just recently bought a MSI Digi@nywhere A/D Plus from Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815127008 to replace the WinTV by Hauppage that came with my HP Media Center m7640n, after installing the card and drivers, I am able to watch TV in the ArcSoft application that came on the CD, but using the Windows Media Software
    I've applied every possible update/rollup for my Windows Media software, but it just says Quote
    "At least one tuner that supports a standard (NTSC) TV signal must be installed to configure the TV signal. Please ensure that your tuner hardware is correctly installed, restart the computer, and try again."
    What am I doing wrongly that Media Center is not finding the card? Since my software is the 2005 version, from what I've read supports ATSC, and was listed on the Newegg.com and MSI spec as supported.
    Quote
    Windows XP SP2 / MCE 2005 / Vista (when using MCE 2005 OS, an extra 3rd party DVD decoder must be installed) / Windows 7
    Is the 3rd party DVD decoder required for device use or just for burning to disc?

    Did you use the latest driver from here?
    http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=132&prod_no=1948
    Yeah, I've got the "Digi@nywhere A/D Plus BDA driver" installed on my PC
    and my "device manager" shows that it's currently the 1.345.9.1009
    I can view the TV in the ArcSoft TotalMedia software and everything works fine, but Media Center still fails to recognize the card. I'd really prefer Media Center because of it's enhance EPG & recording scheduling over TotalMedia
    Is there something more to be done to/with Media Center? Registry edit or 3rd party add-on that I'm missing?
