Is a kernel DSDT like a Loadable Kernel Module?

Hi all.  In the middle of trying to resurrect a (shhh)Mandriva distro,,, well the data and programs from it.
During archLinux install there is a prompt "Do you need support for booting the lernel with a custom DSDT file?
Poked around the web and found some scraps of info that suggest a DSDT may be like a Loadable Kernel Module?
Anyone clarify this?
And is there a problem if I say "YES"?
Reason I ask? I replaced a failed mobo and the new one has an Attansic L1 Ethernet adapter which appears not supported in the current kernel.
There is a driver available at http://atl1.sourceforge.net - does this need to have DSDT enabled?

A dsdt is not a kernel module. It is an acronym for Differentiated System Description Table. It is used by acpi to retrieve informations about your system (in particular those aspects involved in power management). In most cases, the default DSDT file is fine, and you do not need a custom DSDT file. However, ACPI is broken for some systems and fixed or experimental DSDT tables are provided as a replacement of the default one. You can also find howtos to make your own DSDT table fixing common mistakes. One of these howtos is in the gentoo wiki. However, you need to fix it only is if it is broken, and if you have no symptoms just answer 'no' at that question, which is related to the inclusion of the custom DSDT in an initrd. However, also if you answer 'YES' nothing will be broken for this.
There is no relation with modules-drivers external to the default kernel.

well... the OS kernel is for the... "OS" and the SAP Kernel is for.... "SAP"
A kernel is the core of any application, basically is a set of programs and parameters that tell the system how to behave.

  • Frequent Kernel panic ( like 5-6 times in a day) in 10.6.7

    Hi,
I have Macbook Pro 10.6.7 Mid 2010 model. I recently changed my Main Logic board due to hardware issue. After that i see very frequent OS crashes. The Process context shows different process each time. So i guess this has something to do with hardware. The crash is due to a kernel trap, but i could not find more help in google. I am pastic the kernel panic. Please help me.

If you changed out the logic board yourself, it is likely you did not do it correctly. It could be something as simple as a loose screw or connector or something more serious. Double check your work, preferably using an online disassembly or repair guide as a reference. Pay particular attention to screw lengths & where they go -- sometimes a screw just a few millimeters too long in the wrong place will cause problems. Do the same for any mechanical parts like metal shields & for cables. They must be in exactly the right location & orientation or you may have problems, this because everything is so crowded together in laptops.
If the cause is indeed hardware related, panic logs won't do you any good -- they report the memory state at the time of the panic & if the hardware can't reliably write to or read from memory, nothing they tell you can be trusted.

  • Gray apple screen - looks like DOS, panic, kernel, etc.  Stuck! Can't do anything. Help!

Was trying to update software, running Mountain Lion I'm pretty sure (was not updating to Mavericks, just system updates), and in the process of restarting I am stuck with DOS-looking commands on the gray apple startup screen. Part of the commands are listed below. I can't do anything. I'm not even sure I've been able to reboot, although I've tried holding the power button, holding S+Cmd+power, and holding ctrl+option+cmnd+shift+power. I can get it to go dark like it's rebooting, but the gray apple screen pops back up and about 3 seconds later the codes come back. What should I do? I have owned macs and a macbook pro for a while, and I've never seen anything like this. Thanks in advance!

  • Seems Like a Weird Kernel Panic-Why?

I'm familiar with the topic of kernel panics to a small extent, although I've never had one until yesterday. The circumstances seem strange to me. I only had a few tabs open in Safari and I had Mail open. Everything seemed fine, I had no ongoing operation, at which time I stepped away to go watch the rain fall in Philly during the World Series game. I returned to my iMac 30 minutes later to see a frozen screensaver with the white on black teletype like printing superimposed on it. It looked like an older style kernel panic, not the newer version with the box and the message to restart. I successfully restarted by holding my power button down for a few seconds, then repaired permissions and verified disk and all seemed well. And I've had no problems since. It's puzzling to me why my iMac would panic just sitting there doing nothing. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Steve M.

Kernel panics are most frequently caused by hardware failure. In some cases they may be caused by software problems. If you look at your panic and console logs for the time of the panic you may have clues to what caused the panic. It may have been a software glitch, power brownout, or some such one-time event. It could also be a sign that you have RAM that is starting to go south or a problem on the hard drive. Use Disk Utility to repair the drive not just verify it. The latter will not fix any problems on the drive.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Communication between Loadable Kernel Modules

    Hi,
Anybody know how can I make my kernel modules to communicate with each other. For example, module A needs to call a function in module B. If it is possible, will there be any differences in 32 and 64 bits architecture?
    Thanks

The following methods may be able to be used.
You can get device information, dev_info structure, by DEVI macro which defined sys/ddi_impldefs.h .
The dev_info structure has parent and child dev_info structure by linked-list.
And any dev_info has own "dip" in "ddi_minor_data" structure.
If you set private data with "dip" by using ddi_xxx_driver_private(dip) function, you may be able to communicate with another driver module.
Please teach me the right method ;-)

  • Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

    Hello,
First of all, I apologise if this topic has already come up on the forums, but i've checked and can't see anything specifically relating to the problem im having, and ive also checked the bugs section of Archwiki and can't seem to see anything on there either. I'm not sure what information you guys need so ill just post as much as I can think of in this thread and then if you need any other info, ill post it on request.
The problem im having relates to a recent system update, which I did sometime within the past 4 weeks or so, after not upgrading for quite a while due to lack of free time.
In the last update I remember seeing it upgrading the kernel from 2.6.35 to 2.6.36, and since then I have been getting completly random kernel panics, whereby everything freezes. If I have audio output, the sound crashes and everything freezes, and the caps lock and scroll lock lights just flash in sync on the keyboard.
I have never had any problems like this in all the 7 months that i've been using Arch as a permenant OS.
    Hardware:
    Mobo: ASRock 775Dual-VSTA
Ram: 2GB (2x 1GB different brand sticks, same specs)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz
    GFX: Nvidia 8800GT 512MB
Plug and Play hardware that is normally always connected:
    1. Zoom Wireless Dongle (4410b chipset, using ndiswrapper and the Zoom windows driver)
    2. Digital TV Stick (Artec T1) with specific firmware and using MeTV as a viewer.
I've looked in all of the logs, including: dmesg, everything.log, daemon.log, errors.log, messages.log and all the other logs. But there is very little information relating to the crash in there. I'm guessing this is because its a kernel panic so it doesn't have chance to dump anything into the logs before it all crashes? If needs be I can post whichever logs you think will be most useful, but i'm using my laptop at the minute so I wont get chance to post them until tomorrow evening.
I've also tried enabling the testing repos and upgraded to kernel 2.6.37-1 to see if this suspected bug is fixed, but the panic seems to happen the same, if not more with kernel 2.6.37-1. At the minute I've rolled my system back to kernel 2.6.36 because it seemed a little more stable.
It doesn't just crash when your in the X server either. Theres been a few times when i've had a kernel panic during boot. Sometimes a couple of seconds after it starts to boot into Arch. And sometimes just as its processing the Udev events. But as I say it seems completely random rather than relating to specific events.
During one of the crashes at boot I got an error message on the screen which read:
    Setting Latency Timer to 64
HDA Intel 0000:80:01.0: PCI: disallowing DAC for device
    [<c131621b>] ? error_code+0x67/0x6c
Thats as much as I can think of at the minute. As I say, if you need any more information or need me to paste my log files then let me know and i will do that tomorrow.
Thanks in advance for the help, its much appreciated.
    Scott.

    Hi Daniel,
I'm just guessing that its a kenel panic, as when it happens both the caps lock and scroll lock lights flash in sync, which is a sign of kernel panic isn't it?
    My cpu is i686.
I've just read that post and i've downgraded udev to 164-3 to see if this solves the problem as some people have said in that post, although others later on in the thread say that this doesn't solve it for them. This morning it took me 4 restarts just to get arch to boot without the panic. I took a picture of the screen during the panic which ill post after work this evening, it looks pretty similar to the picture posted by "rabid_works" in the thread you pasted. I'm not sure about your post in the other threat that relates to the errors in the Oops report, could you clarify this so I can see if the problems reported in that thread are what I am experiencing?.
In the meantime, here is my pacman.log from 26.12.10 when I did the upgrade and the problems started. (note I have done upgrades following 26.12.10 to see if anything fixed the problem but with no luck, that is why the log is so long and I don't have any hosting anymore, so i've had to post it in quotes, I apologise).

I'm also going to run some hardware tests after work just to double check that all my hardware is functioning as it should so that will eliminate another potential cause.
If downgrading Udev to 164-3 doesn't solve the problem, i will try your version of it Daniel. And if that fails ill try downgrading the kernel to 2.6.35 or something and see if that solves it.
Sorry for the super long post,
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Kernel config for Transcend IDE Flash Module

I'm trying to build a minimal custom kernel for my set-top-box (very limited ressources), which I use as home server.
From a recent Arch Live (USB-stick) the Transcend Flash SSD (4GB, 40pin IDE) gets detected as /dev/sda (by the "sd"-driver, I think). The Problem now is that I can't find the kernel settings and always get a kernel panic because it can't find the root device.
    Here's the data I have:
    lspci (Intel ICH chipset):

The kernel configuration I tried can be found here (from another box running Gentoo).
Any suggestions how I could find the right driver?
    Thanks in advance,
    lynix

Although I have compiled a custom kernel w/o any kind of automatic support, and it worked, I REALLY don' think that it is worth the effort.  In the wiki it recommends: zcat /proc/config.gz > .config  (from within the kernel directory), and I strongly recommend it as well.  All it does is copy some information from your existing kernel into your .config, which vastly improves your odds of having a working kernel right off the bat.  I would compile that, verify that it works, and from that point start taking out modules that you are confident have nothing to do with your system.  (don't forget to select your processor type, and deselect smp if you don't have smp)
I know that it is dissappointing and you'd like to perfect your kernel in one go, but I really think that in the long run, this is your best option.  I don't think that you are going to find anyone who is willing to take the time to tell you what options you personally need to compile in or as modules for you, however, there will be plenty of people who are willing to help.
I know that there are even smarter solutions, including scripts that can supposedly configure a kernel based on the modules and options that are already loaded, but I think results are mixed.  Although, they might make a great starting point.  I think (but could be wrong) that gentoo's 'genkernel' worked like that.  Though I've used it years ago, I don't think that I fully understood how it worked at the time.
If you are dead set on minimizing all of the options that you compile for your kernel manually, your tools are lspci, lsmod, cat /proc* etc.  You can save the output, figure out what options correspond with that output, and hope for the best!
    Good luck

  • Macbook kernel panic during boot + other kernel panics! HELP PLEASE

    Hello,
I have a w macbook 2,0 ghz duo (2006 edition), 2gb ram, original HD. Operating system: Tiger OsX (updated).
A couple of weeks ago my mb started to display (during a normal session and even after a stand-by) a big message on screen "Please hold down the power button to restart your computer" etc = kernel panic message.
I took a look at the panic.log file and it said:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: firefox-bin
So I thought there was something with firefox and, to resolve definetely this problems, I checked my hd using utility then I tried to install Leopard using the DVD(updated again). After installing Leopard I did not receive kernel panic errors related to firefox-bin thread but now I still have kernel panic problems.
    These are the error messages:
    1. When I boot up the mb, it shows the "restart" message or it FREEZES (doesn't boot up)
    2. The log says that the panic error is related to "ACPI" and Io.apple.firewirefamily (what is it???)
    3. The panic.log file just says:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001A9C68): Kernel trap at 0x001a77f5, type 14=page fault, registers:

  • [Solved] Kernel 2.6.31 cannot find "modules.dep"

After upgrading to default x86_64 kernel 2.6.31-ARCH with no error messages, I get this during reboot:
    "Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.30-ARCH/modules.dep"
Well, no wonder, as there is no 2.6.30-ARCH directory, only 2.6.31-ARCH. I have tried "mkinitcpio -p kernel26", but it didn't help any (naturally).
Is there an easy fix for this?

Dieter@be wrote:Yes, if you have a separate filesystem for /boot, you should leave it uncommented in fstab and mounted when you install a new kernel (watch out with the 'noauto' mount option).  during package installation it will show a warning if you have /boot not mounted but I guess we both overlooked it.
It is not so surprising if I overlooked it... However, I cannot recall seeing such a warning? I am in the habit of copying both pacman's package install msgs and boot console msgs, but I don't think I have ever seen a warning about the /boot partition not being mounted.
Dieter@be wrote:It is remarkable however,  I don't remember ever having an issue like this, do you?  It looks to me like something changed, I looked at the sources for kernel26 but couldn't find anything special.
During the 18 months I have used Arch I have received a faulty kernel twice. On both occasions the problem was another than this /boot partition issue. I have never had the /boot partition uncommented in fstab while using Arch, so something must have changed, or there is a new bug in the kernel code somewhere. It is significant that this only appears with the 2.6.31 kernel.
I have EXT3 on my boot partition, and I use this ending in fstab "defaults 0 1". Is it safe?
BTW - with "vga=773 nomodeset" in GRUB, graphics, incl. MPlayer etc., seem to be back to normal - in fact better than before, as I am now getting full repaints in OOo Calc! Of course, since I am not into gaming, I don't know if there is some other functionality missing...
Thanks again, Dieter - I will mark this thread solved!

  • Upgraded kernel...can't load modules??

Okay today I ran pacman -Syu and upgraded to kernel 2.4.21.  My only problem now is that on boot, I cannot load any modules, and when I go to modprobe them manually I am given this error:
    [root@protium root]# modprobe ne2k-pci
modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.20/modules.dep (No such file or directory)
    [root@protium root]#
A quick glance at my /lib/modules directory surely doesn't show 2.4.20 (as I would not expect it to) but rightly shows 2.4.21 where there is a modules.dep file.  My question is, what do I do (besides a symbolic link) to get modprobe to correctly work again?[/code]

fyi when ever you do anything with respect to lilo or if you recompile or install your own custom kernel always run lilo afterwards. grub does not require this but lilo is not as "smart" and needs to know the kernel or lilo changes you have made.
with respects t the initrd entry in lilo that is only necessary unless you have the new arch scsi configured kernel installed. i got the same error you did after the upgrade and all i did was comment out the initrd entry in my lilo.conf and then ran lilo (or you could have removed it all together but i left mine around in case i ever want an experimental or alternat kernel installed then i would just quickly edit the old initrd entry)

  • Safe to remove linux kernel when using linux-lts kernel?

I'm using the `linux-lts` kernel on my work machine (less reboots after updates); I know in theory it should be safe to remove the normal `linux` kernel (and it's dependencies) but does anyone know if it is safe in practice? Nothing that assumes there will always be a `linux` package because without it there couldn't be a running system?

This should be as easy to figure out, as comparing dependencies can be:
    linux-lts:
    Required By (5)
    archboot
    nvidia-lts
    r8168-lts
    virtualbox-archlinux-modules-lts
    virtualbox-modules-lts
    linux:
    Required By (15)
    archboot
    cdfs
    fcpci
    fcpcmcia
    lirc
    ndiswrapper
    nvidia
    open-vm-tools-modules
    r8168
    rt3562sta
    vhba-module
    virtualbox-archlinux-modules
    virtualbox-archlinux-modules (testing)
    virtualbox-modules
    virtualbox-modules (testing)
That might mean, most notably, that infrared ports and cdemu-driven image mounts won't work with the lts kernel (or at least should not without pulling in the normal kernel).

  • Kernel 2.6.22 and kvm-modules

I'm running a Core2 machine, in 686 mode, on kernel 2.6.22 from testing.   I have installed kvm-modules-28, and when I modprobe kvm, I get this response:
    kvm: Unknown symbol set_64bit
I have been searching all over google, rebuilt my kernel with different options and nothing seems to cure what ails it.  Does anyone know what's wrong here? KVM used to work.
    Thanks,
    Adam

That fixed my problem.  I removed kvm-modules and re-synced my kernel, in case kvm-modules had trashed my kvm.ko files.
Also one thing that would really help would be to add the udev-rules from the kvm-modules and create the group kvm.  I don't know if that's appropriate with the mainline kernel or not, though.
We'll have to re-add the rules and some other files in the qemu package (which includes the userspace kvm stuff).
