Is a refurbished MacbookPro retina display as good as a new one?

Is a refurbished MacbookPro retina display as good as a new one? No scratches?

I surely appreciate your answers. I fully agree that anything can happen anytime and it is a matter of chances after all. The most important thing seems to me how to reduce the chances of having troubles with the notebook.
1. My first answer would be: Apple Care protection plan (almost 350$ for a 15” retina), but this means for you ho live in the US where the equipment was bought 2 years of warranty extended for another year and for us who live overseas the same 3 years (one year international warranty plus 2 years of protection by the Apple Care).
2.  Buying new seems to be safer. It's a pitty there are no sites about reliability as for cars (TrueDelta comes into my mind right now).
3. I wonder about some mistakes we as owners could make, such as using it after exposure  to cold temperatures, humid or dusty environments, recharging before a significant drop of power, dropping it because of the very slippery aluminum case, etc.

I am in California. I intend to buy refurbished iPad Retina display, WiFi 16 GB, form online Apple Store in US.
Will its 1 year warranty be applicable/ honoured in India?

Here is a link to the US warranty for iPad:
    http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/ipad-english.html
    Please note this excerpt:
IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE AND iPAD SERVICE.
Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.
And here is the equivalent warranty for India (which includes the same limitation):
    http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/ipad-english-mein.html
You'll note the "may restrict" - I do not know how strict the enforcement of the terms would be.

  • MacBookPro glossy display as good as iMac display?

How good is the MacBookPro glossy display compare to the iMac display? I just love the colour of the iMac display, i noticed however that the matte MBPs in the stores are not as awesome as the iMac. I have no experience with the glossy MBPs and the store only displays the matte ones. Does anyone have an opinion if the MBP glossy display can match the display performance of the iMac?

Chris look at my comments in this thread regarding testing reflections in sunlight glossy v matte:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1334434
It is not so much the display as the way the computer produces the colors BTW. The iMac is capable of true "millions of colors" because it uses 24 bit color (8 bit each, RGB) however the MacBook Pro uses only 18 bit color (6 bit per color, RGB) This produces 260,000 colors which then are added too by dithering to provide the in between colors. While it works well and is beautiful it cannot compete side by side with the iMac, hence less 'wow' factor

  • How many HD 1080p Videos should the New MacBookPro Retina Display (2.6GHz i7, 8GB Ram, Flash Memory) should run Flowlessly/Smoothly??

    Dears at Mac Support,
I am a Visual Artist, and I use my MacBook Pro for live Visual/Video Mixing and effects. Since I moved to this new club, i need to run all my Videos on HD 1080p Format. I already had the Latest MacBook Pro (2.3GHz i7, 8GB RAM) with the Stock HDD (5,700 RPM), and it performs beautifully, The only issue was Running more than 1 HD 1080p Videos, where you can feel the slowing down of the Videos. The Solution is moving to SSD Drive where I can run 2 or more HD 1080p Videos Simultaneously (Over Layered).
Instead of investing in an SSD, i preferred buying the new MacBook Pro Retina Display (2.6GHz i7,8GB Ram, 512GB Flash memory). Everything about the new MacBook Pro should support my work and give me a better Performance. Unfortunately, I am not able to run ONLY 2 HD 1080 Videos to gather! The result is being Breakdance style video, like it's cutting and continuing the videos. Compared to my Old MacBook Pro (2.3GHz i7, 8GB RAM), on the old one the Video slows Down but does not Leg or Cut
Is there a Solution for this issue? Or i simply did the Most useless investment of my life?
PS: Both Running on OSX 10.7.4, and both are running on the Video Codecs and Visual Performance Software (Modul8 2.6.4)
More Details: Video format is .MOV (Photo JPEG)
If there is any more details you would need, please do let me know.

A faster hard drive connection is available through your Thunderbolt port.  See what you can connect via Sonnet's adapter:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/echoexpresscard34thunderbolt.html
An eSATA or Thunderbolt hard drive would probably be at least faster than the internal drive, and an external SSD may be cheaper than an internal for your notebook, and even faster.

  • Should I buy the MBP retina now or wait for the new one?

    Hey
I wanna buy a new MBP retina 15" before my uni starts in fall so after like a month and a half. I already have a 2011 MBP but wanna get a new and better one so I am just wondering what is the latest 15" retina by Apple? and when is the approximate date for the release of new retinas? like I mean if Apple has a date for new releases like it has for iPhone and iPad usually like to know if it worth waiting or not
    Thanks

I haven't heard anything as far as a new retina models. I just upgraded from a 13" mid 2012 non-retina pro to a 13" late 2013 retina pro. Either way I don't think there will be any major improvements to their retina pros if they do release a new one in the fall. I would say go ahead and get your retina now. Also Apple has a reuse and recycle program along with a student discount. You can take your old mac in and possibly get a store credit towards a new one but I doubt you'll get a huge discount. For my last MacBook, I would only have gotten about $350. But make sure you get what you need in it when you buy it because you can't upgrade the parts.

  • Should I buy the MacBookPro Retina display or wait for the update to come out?

    PLEASE HELP ME!

you realize - I tried to gently show - that this is a forum for workstation users, so you know that, right?
And I would not expect any real change until Intel comes out with the second phase of their cycle with Ivy Bridge mobile processor family in 2013-2014 - and it is more complex and costly - but Intel basically sets the stage for what new hardware will be available to OEM vendors - atleast those using Intel processor and logicboard.
Our two year old Mac Pro towers still hold up well even though they have fallen behind in SATA performance, support is there but not a newer Apple graphic card, and no Sandy Bridge or Ivy processor - or USB3 and Thunderbolt. But then they hold up well in performance and from breaking down and good investment llkely to last longer than most laptops and parts.
But everyone is clamoring for a new 2013 Mac Pro tower.
So it really was, for me, confusing just what update you could mean when a rMBP just came out, iMac are overdue, and Mac Pro is already waiting for a real major update but not until 2013 sometime, when Intel and everyone is ready - and likely to see some new high end graphic card offerings.
You should add a tower to your laptop then, start saving, would make a nice add-on to have - and starts are around $2K.

  • Will there be a 13 inch Macbook pro with Retina Display? I need a new laptop

I will need to buy a new laptop for school and since they have a new model for the 15 inch laptop, I was wondering whether theywil update the 13 inch model as well.

I lament it is against the TOS on this site to speculate on unannounced Apple products. Not only could it be a wonderful market litmus test for Apple to utilize (for free) but what better online board exists to let the company we pay a premium to be a part of know what we as the consumers would like to see next?

  • My "top sites" no longer display and I cannot make new ones appear. Why?

I used to have Top Sites capability where my favorite websites were displayed as icons on one page so I could easily click the icon and go to that page. They disappeared in the last month and I cannot get them back nor can I create them again using the "add to top sites" tool at the top of the page. Why?

Do you mean the about:newtab page or a special page created by an extension?
See this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):

  • HT2490 How to get two (or more) active websites on screen - MacbookPro OSX 10.9.  Opening a new one overwrites the original.

With several past OSX installations, I could open several web sites and back-up to the previous one.
Now, with OSX 10.9 (Matrix), in most cases, each new web site overwrites the previous one.
In some instances, a second window in a site will allow a return or a Track Pad swipe to return to the original window.
17" MacBook Pro with OSX 10.9
Are there settings available to allow multiple web sites to remain open?

Do you use tabs? I always have several open throughout the day and can simply hit the tab to return to that page. Or, if you have enough screen real estate, open a couple of windows side by side; however, only one will be active at any time.

  • Can I use two HP Pavillion 23bw monitors with my MBP with Retina Display?

Can I use two HP Pavillion 23bw monitors with my MBP with Retina Display with good video quality? I just purchased them and am already reading about issues with non-Apple External Monitors being used with MBP with Retina.  Plus I just assumed it given the power of the video card, but I can turn off the display to my MBP and extend the two HP monitors correct? I do realize they won't have the picture quality of the retina display but I would hope they look reasonable with 1080p
New to the Support Community so thanks in advance for any help.

This is an update on the question about the use of the Dell P2415Q 4K monitor with MacBook Pro 13" and 15" w/ Nvidia graphics card installed. The monitor works very well with both systems and is automatically identified when connected. The 13" machine with Iris Graphics defaults to 2560 x 1440 at 60hz. This was very workable, matching the Apple Thunderbolt Display for resolution. I was not able to set the display for full 4K at 3840 x 2160, even at 30hz. Just not enough horsepower with the basic Intel CPU with Iris Graphics. But make no mistake, the setup works well and the screen looks great.
The 15" with Iris Pro Graphics and the Nvidia GeForce GT 575M discrete graphics card also recognized the display and drove it at full 4K, 3840 x 2160, 60hz with no problems. Running in clamshell mode required a bit of fine tuning with the Apple display settings. But nothing major.
Due to a relatively small workstation, I selected the 24" version of the Dell monitor. If you are looking for a relatively large monitor with near "retina" resolution, the P2415Q is a perfect pairing for the MacBook Pro - and a terrific bargain. I paid $530 on the Dell website.

  • Retina displays and image size

I am attempting to prepare images for a website launch. The site will incude a photography portfolio. My original assumption was to knock all the images down to 72 pixels, which is autmatically done in iPhoto. Being new to Apperature I do not see how to do this yet.
First question is, how do I control how many pixels per inch are exported, when I want to use an image on a website? (what are the steps please)
Next, now that the retina display is available on more than one iDevise what is the best resolution (if that is the correct term) to export images for the site so that the portfolio images are shown in highest quality?
Last question for now, and bit of a side thought: when it is said there are x-many more pixels, or higher resolution, what is the corect way of handling photographs assuming the first images on the site were 72 pixels per inch, 700X900? If I wanted to double this for the iFamily of products would I create images 144 pixels per inch, 700X900 or 72 pixels per inch, 1400X1800?

This confuses me if dpi is meaningless. What is it that developers do to make their icons and graphics better in apps when there is a new release? Are they increasing dpi or image dimensions? If it is image dimensions why is it that they appear the same on the display?
For example: my website logo looks fuzzy on the new retina display. The logo size is 110X360 pixels and it is set at 72 pixels per inch (verified using Preview). I have the original logo which measures 2212X648 at 300 pixels per inch and is set at 300 pixels per inch. There must be a way to clean up its appearance yet have it appear the same size.
The same applies to the images, although it does not seemto be as apparent. If I start at 300 pixels per inch on a 3000X2000 image, what settings would be optimal for the exported image on the site? Assuming dimensions of somewhere in the vicinity of 920X1380 to 960X1440 (if that makes sense).
    Donald-
Start thinking in terms of the pixel dimensions of your output and mostly forget about the pixel density (ppi) of your output unless you are printing to hard copy.
E.g. your logo is 110x360 pixels; changing pixel density does not change the pixel dimensions. Your 110x360 pixels looks good at a certain size on a low rez display, but on a high rez display the 110x360 pixels must either be viewed smaller or uprezzed in the browser, in web design software or in the OS to view at the same size. As you know uprezzing reduces image quality. Quality digital images visually usually tolerate uprezzing better than small logos do.
To make your logo look good on the higher rez display you need to provide more pixels to start with. How software does the uprez/downrez thing is of course a challenge, and there are multiple different approaches; enough material for a couple of upper-division uni courses. A highe level app like Adobe flex, for instance, provides three resolution band choices (IIRC 160/240/320 ppi).
How any given designer proceeds is dependent on what tools he/she chooses to use.

After the display is detected, you can go to sytem preferences>displays, click the arrangements tab and unchrck mirrioring you can then drag a pane to the external monitior, the window in the arrange pane with the white border on the top will be the one on your built in the other will be the one you can drag. You can select which way to drag it by moving the postion of the non white top bordered window to the left or right of the "static" one.
Also you can click "show diplays in menu bar" and it will put an icon there that you can use to change display prefes without having to go to syst prefes.
    Hope this helps
