Is Camcorder Canon XA20 compatable with FCE

I have purchased a camcorder Cann XA20 and hoping it is compatable with Final Cut Express HD.
Can some advise please.

There are types of footage that are known as Interlaced and Progressive.
If using PAL footage that has a video standard of 25 frames it is actually made up of 50 fields.
A field is one scan of odd lines followed by a scan of even lines, these two fields when combined create the one frame.
This is the type of footage FCE can work with.
Progressive footage is a self contained frame without the two fields.
Simply put, FCE is designed to work with Interlaced footage.
If your camera has shot Progressive footage do not expect it to Import.

  • What camcorder are you using with FCE that's compatible

I'd like to hear from folks so other folks know what's compatible and what is not. I know Apple has a list but it's outdated. old, and not comprehensive. By you stating what make & model your camcorder is and if it works with FCE will help a lot of folks.

    Hi Sheila.
The Apple list causes more trouble than it is worth.
There are possibly thousands of cameras out there but testing is so time-consuming that Apple has only tested a handful - probably all those on the list!
I think you will find that (almost) every mini-DV camera in the world, equipped with FireWire, will work OK in FCE.
You probably stand a greater chance of being struck by lightning than of buying a new camera that will not work.
Having said that, some Canon owners have experienced problems - which have usually been curable.
If you buy from a local dealer you might be able to come to an agreement that you can return the camera in the highly unlikely case that it is not compatible with FCE.
I believe some dealers will let you borrow cameras for short evaluation periods. (I don't expect the large "box-shifters" will do this).

  • Canon HF11 compatibility with PCE?

    Hi,
I have recently bought a Canon HF11 and naturally want to edit my 1080i AVCHD movies. According to apple's website, it seems that its not one of the models approved for Final Cut Express, perhaps because its fairly new. Can someone advise if this camcorder model works with FCE? If not, which apple software is recommended?
    Thanks,
    Max

I didn't know Apple still had lists of approved cameras!
They were always hopelessly out of date and presumably still are.
To work with AVCHD you need FCE 4 and an Intel Mac.
Your camera should also work well with iMovie 7 onwards, and this is free as it should already be on your Mac (if you have bought it in the last couple of years).

  • Has Anybody Used the Canon HF R10 with FCE 4?

Has anybody out there had success with using the Canon HF R10 in FCE 4?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I just confirmed it is a bug in Visual Studio 2013.  Using Visual Studio 2010 (VS10) I have no problems creating a database.  The workaround in VS 2013 is to create a database in VS10, store it on localhost, import it into your Solution using
SQL Server Explorer in Visual Studio 2013, then you can create an Entity Data (ADO.NET / EF) that connects to the database.  But even this step is a bit of a problem, in that you must first create an empty Entity Data, then populate it by connecting to
an existing database, which would be the database you imported from VS10.  If you try and connect the Entity Data directly to the database using the Entity Data Model Wizard, nothing seems to happen.  So first create an Entity Data model (empty),
then connect it to the database you have created with a New Connection using the built in Visual Studio 2013 SQL Server manager.

  • Anyone have this Camcorder Panasonic AG-DVC30 with FCE

Is anyone using this Camcorder with FCE. I want to know if there compatible (It does have firewire), but I'd like to hear first hand. Thank you!

I have this camera. While I have yet to do any significant work with it, a few test shots & imports have worked fine.

  • Mac OSX 10.4 compatable with FCE?

I have recently bought Mac OSX tiger and wanted to know if it's working ok with FCE ver 2.03?

I recently updated my OS to Tiger (carefully followed all directions)- since all my other apps and my computer have been working beautifully ever since, I don't believe there's a problem with the way in which I installed 10.4.
FCE has indeed been very stable while running on 10.3.9, and it worked fine when I ran it using Panther (which I booted off my external hard disk).
I don't believe that FCE repeatedly crashing on Tiger is a widespread issue (I'm very relieved to hear that you aren't having problems with it), but for those of us who are having crashing issues I gather the problem is fixable. The task now is to find the fix. By the way, we're talking legal, purchased copies of FCE here, not the cracked or bootlegged rubbish.
I'll see what I can find. If I can't resolve the issue then I can at least run it off my 10.3 backup.

  • Canon HV30 compatibility with FW800?

Hi. I have a Canon HV30 and two iMacs - the first iMac is a 5 year old power-pc based iMac with a 6-Pin FW400 port. The second iMac is about 1 day old - and has just a single 9-pin FW800 port.
The camera is not recognized by the new iMac.
The camera is recognized just fine by the old iMac.
We're using both iMovie and Final Cut Express.
I have taken the entire setup to the genius bar at the apple store and spent 2 hours on the phone with support where we have tested the following:
    1. FW port on the new iMac works fine with FW800 devices (we tested with a disk drive)
    2. FW port on the new iMac works fine with an older FW400 Canon video camera
    3. tried a new 4 pin (from the camera) to 9 pin cable
    4. done every kind of hardware reset they could think of on the computer
They are stumped. They left me with "must be a compatibility issue between this particular camera and the newer FW800 protocol or else it's a hardware problem, though we can't explain why the camera works fine on your older iMac". One last item - when we connect the camera - the Firewire section of the hardware display window says "Unable to list firewire devices" meaning that whatever is coming through from the camera to the computer is totally confusing the computer.
Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!!!

    Hi to everybody.
I've the same problem with Snow Leopard and Canon HV30. My machine is iMac 27" I5 with 8GB of RAM.
I checked my firewire port with firewire HardDisk and all was fine. So the firewire HW hasn't any problem.
The camcorder wasn't never detected by Snow Leopard. I've the update S.O. running Mac OS X 10.6.2.
I used several cables 9pin to 4 pin and also with adpters, but the camera was not detected... never detected.
I also tried to connect the camera on 27" Base (Core2 duo) running on shops: the camera was detected without problems. So i think that the problem is on firewire drivers on the operative system.
    Any solution?

  • Canon HV20 Compatibility with Final Cut Express

I cannot get the latest version of Final Cut Express to work with my new Canon HV20 video camera. I can get the video into iMovie 08, but nothing I try can get Final Cut Express to recognize the camera. I cannot import the imovie file either. It gives me an error. I can drag the video from the Hard Disk to Final Cut Express to import it, but that is cumbersome.

    Start here:
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Video10.html
Then come back and do this:
Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you're using in FCE, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QT are you using?

  • Canon DC330, Compatible with FCE?

    Hello!
I just purchased a Canon DC330 and am having problems with getting FCE to communicate with my camera. I am using the usb 2.0 cable...Does this mean I need to purchase the firewire cable? Or is this one of the incompatible cameras?
I searched for a similar question and did not find one.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you might have!
    Priscilla

Hello and welcome to the forum.
I don't think there's a firewire connection on this camera. It records to DVDs, correct? You'll need to convert your recorded video before editing in FCE.
My preferred method for doing this is DVDxDV, $25 (http://dvdxdv.com/)

  • Canon Optura S1 with FCE

When I try and import my video from my Canon Qptura S1 into Final Cut Express HD I get an error saying something about the time markers, I can't tell you what it is exactly because I am importing through iMovie as I type this. I will post what the error is as soon as I can. So does anyone know how to get this thing to work?

Hard to tell without knowing what the error message is. What settings are on your meeting 12-bit/16-bit? What settings are you using in FCE?

  • Canon ZR900 compatability with IMovie09

My Sony's firewire port died and must get a new mini dv camera so I can load all my video tapes onto the macbook pro. Does anyone have sucessful experience with the Canon ZR900 or similar model? I've already tried a Samsung that didn't work and the mini dvs are becoming quite scarce in the marketplace. Any help on currently available mini dv camcorders(only using for uploading the tapes) would be appreciated.

Thanks for response Wasn't able to find that model, but did find the Sony DCR-HC52 which has worked fine so far for imports.

  • What kind of camcorder would you recommend for FCE HD 3.5?

    Hello everyone,
I'm very new here and have been trying to search for the answer to my question without having to bug anyone, but now I am under the gun, as it were.
I need to purchase something within a week and a half and would truly appreciate suggestions from anyone here. Here are a list of my questions and I hope you all will be kind of enough to help me. Thank you in advance.
1- I would prefer a camcorder that records to a DVD, but if tape is way better, please let me know.
2- I see that FCE does not support AVCHD. What other pitfalls are there to avoid in purchasing a camcorder that is compatible with FCE HD?
3- My dream is to have a camcorder that can record in 24p, but can't seem to determine whether FCE HD can support it. Please help!
4- Am willing to pay more for CCD sensor range - is this helping?
5-Would like to shoot in 16:9 ratio and with lines of resolution of 720 and higher, this possible with FCE?
5- With the questions above...what camcorder would you recommend?
I know some of the camcorders that have these features are ranging from $900 to over $1,000 but would consider it a good investment for things I would like to do in the future.
I hope the information I've given is enough for you all to give your suggestions. Thank you again.

They are not bad - just unsuitable for FCE and all good editing programs.
There are several totally different kinds of Digital Video - many people mistakenly think all "digital" is the same.
DVD, Flash Memory or Hard Disk camcorders produce video in a version of the MPEG format.
FCE etc. only handles video in the DV or QT format which is totally different from MPEG.
One analogy would be to buy a diesel powered car and then find that all the filling stations in your area only had petrol (gasolene) pumps. Your car would be pretty useless !
The only way MPEG can be used in FCE is by converting it to DV or QT which wastes time or money and results in slightly reduced quality.
All these cameras are produced for the mass market (where the money is), to be used by people with no knowledge or interest in film-making or editing.

  • Shotgun Microphone Does Not Fit in Canon XA20 Handle

Hi, I just purchased a Canon XA20 and with it I purchased a Rode Shotgun mic. Problem is the diameter of the microphone is too narrow to be firmly attached into the micrphone holder on the handle.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

I just got my xa20 today and noticed the same problem. The shotgun mic is not nice and tight in the holster and can easily slide around. To make it tight all I did was put the shotgun mic in the holster and then ran the xlr wire through it also. The wire was enough to fill the gap and make the mic tight.

  • Is there a way to import clips from AVCHD folders I have copied from my camcorder to my hard disk? With FCE I could import these clips using log and transfer.

In FCP-X is there a way to import AVCHD clips from an AVCHD file folder I have copied from my Canon hard disk camcorder to my iMac hard disk?  With FCE I used log and transfer with no problem; but, FCP-X doesn't import them. It will import AIC files that have been created in FCE from the original AVCHD files.  If FCP-X will not import these files directly from the copied AVCHD folder, is there a workaround using other software to convert the files? For example, Compressor? (Canon does not provide any AVCHD conversion software for OSX).

    Hi jphil and Tom
I have exactly the same problem but the answer you (Tom) provided did not help in my case. Trying to "Import ->From Camera" and pointing to the AVCHD folder yields the error message: "(Folder) contains unsupported files or has invalid directory structure."
    Folder structure is
    AVCHD
         BDMV
              CLIPINF
                   .CPI files
              Index.bdm
              Movieobj.bdm
              PLAYLIST
                   .MPL file
              STREAM
                   .MTS files
    AVF_INFO
         3 files (.bnp, .inp, .int)
    DCIM
         101MSDCF
              empty
         MODELCFG.IND (file)
My question is: Is that not a "camera archive" of the type you talked about in the thread? Is it on principle not possible to import the files in that format/directory structure? If not, since the shots were not taken by myself, what should I ask the guy who shot the movies to give me to be able to work with them in FC?
I work with a brand new Final Cut Pro X 10.0.4 (still very clumsy with it) on an iMac 11,3 with MacOS 10.6.8.
I downloaded the latest version of codec updates from the Apple support site but no difference.
    Thank you in advance
