Is DNG conversion during Tethered Shooting Possible?

Previously, using a Canon 5D MkII  and lightroom 2  I could shoot to a hot folder which Lightroom would watch, convert the images to DNG and add them to my catalog.
I love that Tethered Shooting is now part of Lightroom but unfortunately I can't seem to find anywhere to set up a recipe or parameters for the import and can only convert the files to DNG in post.... bit of a waste of time isn't it?
Am I missing something.... I sure hope there will be more options in tethered shooting in the final release.  I have had to use Capture One to do Tethered shooting on Jobs but hate that I can't import the corrections into Lightroom.  I was really hoping to circumvent C1 and save a bunch of time.
If it's not there, please add DNG conversion on the fly and keep my files in LR rather than C1

Right now, when tethered, Aperture is preventing files from being written to the CF card in the camera (which I definitely don't want)
You have no control over that behavior. It's the way Aperture works when you are shooting tethered.
If I understand your question, it sounds like you are trying to use Aperture as a replacement/supplement for the LCD on the back of your camera. If so, is there a HDMI output on your 5DMKIII? Maybe you could attach that output to a monitor as a solution.

  • Setting and holding White balance during tethered shooting

I came to Apeture from Capture One Pro.  I used Capture when working for a photo studio, when I started shooting for myself I went with the much more affordable Apeture.  I have been very happy with the workflow, but Apeture seems to be missing one of most basic settings for tethered shooting, setting and maintaining custom gray balance. I realize that I can shoot a frame with a gray card and white balance that frame, but the following frames revert to the pre-whitebalanced color settings.  In Capture One, I would balance my first frame to a gray card, even add a manual tweek, and all subsequent frames would follow the new color settings.  Perhaps there is a setting I have missed, some sort of automatic inheriting of the last frames adjustments.  I realize that it is easy enough to adjust my color settings after the fact, but my color is off during shooting, and clients are not always able to envision the finished product.  I really hope I'm missing something, because it's the most important feature to me for shooting tethered, right after the ability to shoot tethered.

It forces this yucky uber warm white balance. Just to make sure it was not shot that way, I then selected "as shot". It immediatly went to the color of the shoot and looks great.
When you select 'As Shot' do the Temp and Tint settings change? How about other settings, do any of them change? Just trying to determine what is actually causing the color change.
Did you try creating a new preset with the same settings, and see how it behaves when you uncheck White Balance? The original preset file may have been corrupted (i.e. damaged) and resaves are not fixing it. If this doesn't resolve the problem then it is likely a bug with tethered mode operation. Please let us know.

  • Slideshow during tethered shooting - how?

    Hello all,
here's what I'd like to achieve: I would like to connect my Nikon D300 and shoot several RAW images during a session. While shooting, Aperture should display a slide show loop of all pictures that have already been taken during this particular session. Thus, I would like to have a slide show while I am still shooting in tethered mode.
Is this possible with Aperture? If not, any other tool that I can use? Any advice?
    Thanks a lot and cheers,
    Bastian

  • DNG conversion during photo download via bridge

    Hi,
I have CS6 & ACR 8.2 (the latest version I think) but since I've been using CS6, when I download my photo's with Bridge photo downloader, the conversion (that happens at the same time) (from *.CR2) doesn't work anymore.  I just keep getting my *.CR2 files.
    Can anyone help me ?

  • Tethered Shooting with Nikon does not save on CF/SD Cards

Has Lightroom 5 now a solution for the tethered shooting with Nikon cameras where no save on the CF/SD cards takes place?
If not, will this covered in the future?

An external HDD does not help for the most common image loss during tethered shooting: Transfer problems.
When any transmission problem occurs while shooting and the images are not stored on the memory card, they will be gone. I can't tell you how many images I lost because I had some cable problem while being tethered.
Tethering without a copy on memory card is not a good idea, really. So since the feature is available (otherwise it wouldn't work in digiCamControl, they don't install a new firmware or use super secret camera drivers or anything) I can't understand why Adobe does not support it.

  • How do I remove "DNA Software tethered shooting demo for A99" disclaimer from all my during capture?

how do I remove "DNA Software tethered shooting demo for A99" disclaimer from all my images during capture?

I guess the obvious answer is PURCHASE the DNA Software so it won't be a demo unless you have already purchased it and it still won't work and in that case you should contact DNA Software.

  • Did my NEF to DNG conversion work properly?

I had read that when I convert to DNG in Lightroom (v4), the file sizes will drop by about 20% (I checked the check box for compression). I'm converting from a batch of 16-bit NEFs I created when scanning slides using the Nikon LS-5000 scanner. Those scans and files were created with Nikon Scan 4.0. After doing the conversion in Lightroom, the DNG file sizes are around 3MB-17MB. The original NEF files were about 135MB. Where in the world did all my data go? I'm concerned that the conversion to DNG threw away a ton of the original data. How is that much of a reduction possible? I'm hoping that there wasn't some catastrophic problem during the conversion, as I also checked the check box to delete the originals after the conversion is finished.
The image quality seems to be okay when looking at the DNG files in Lightroom.
    Thanks,
    Jay

I scanned at the full resolution (4000dpi, I think) of the LS-5000. The DNGs all appear to have their full original resolution, 5782x3946. This was one of the first things I thought about, too, but the resolution doesn't appear to have been changed any.
Jeff, upon re-opening the Convert Photo to DNG dialog box, I see that I did check "Use Lossy Compression." I spaced. I belived I was telling it to use lossless compression (I was assuming that no compression would have been used otherwise). So the conversion makes them into a high-quality JPEG, basically (but still 16-bit)? If I don't check that, will the DNG conversion use lossless compression, or no compression at all?
These slides are from a few decades to several decades old, all shot by my dad. I'm wondering if I would even see any degradation from using the lossy compression option. 135MB per image seems WAY beyond what is necessary to maintain the quality of these slides, so I would like SOME compression, but don't want to see any clearly visible signs of quality loss. Any words of wisdom welcome.

  • Tethered Shooting: Automated JPEG generation

    Hi, folks,
we want to shoot a lot (100.000+) of pictures using tethered shooting.
We prefer camera profiling, that's why we want to use lightroom. But we'd like to save the step to do a manual JPEG export afterwards but would like to write the JPEG immediately - like this:
Tethered Shoot -> Profile correction of the picture -> Writing JPEG in an instant.
    Is this possible with lightroom?
    Thanks and best regards
    Martin

So it sounds like you like the idea of automation if you can do it, rather than being the human tech that does the Export operation, yourself, after you finish with the camera?
I am also a programmer but don’t know the specifics about Photoshop action scripts as droplets enough to know if it’s possible but my idea would be:
With tethered shooting a newly taken shot lands in a folder.  An OS script would be watching for that file and would need to move the raw file to a temporary folder, then kick off a Photoshop droplet EXE (on Windows, not sure about a Mac) to perform a default ACR conversion on the raw file (assuming a default conversion exists for all your photos), and write a jpg, at which point the droplet EXE would terminate, then the remaining part of the script would move the raw file somewhere and the jpg file somewhere else, and then loop back to get the next raw file from wherever the tether app might have put it, or wait until another file shows up.
I am not sure if a Photoshop droplet is capable of opening a raw file, doing a default ACR conversion, and saving out a raw file, but it might be able to.  A droplet is an EXE file that you create with Photoshop from a script that you’ve recorded in Photoshop and that you can run, otherwise, in Photoshop from the scripts menu.
Notice I’m not talking about Lightroom, here, but Photoshop so you’d have to buy that (the PS-CC+LR bundle is $10/month).  I’m pretty sure there is no way to automate LR do to what you want, but since Photoshop can create executable files called droplets and you can call those from a batch file or other type of OS script, then it might be possible, assuming you can get ACR to open the file on the way into Photoshop and Photoshop save out the JPG all without human intervention, a picture at a time.
It’s also possible that a Photoshop JavaScript could actually do everything you want.  I have seen scripts open ACR and do things, but I’m not sure if they can move files around in the OS or not.
You also might want to use some other program for your tethering and not LR since LR is not part of the process, otherwise.  It would depend on what camera and OS you have whether a compatible app was available.  Of course an outside app might be able to run an OS script, which would entirely automate the process.
My suggestion would be to Google for writing droplets from Photoshop scripts, and download the Photoshop trial and see if you can get something to open a file, write out a jpg and shut down.  If so then you can probably do the rest with OS scripts, assuming you can find a tethering app.

  • How to keep a copy of the image file on memory card when using tethered shooting with a Nikon D800?

I love tethered Shooting but as default (at least for Nikon) Lightroom does only save the file on the computer, not on the memory card.
Now I want to have a backup of the image file on the memory card additionally to downloading it. The tethering software digiCamControl can do this with my camera, so it is technically possible.
So how can I achieve this using Lightroom tethering?

Thanks. FWIW I'm very keen on improving tethering and lobbied Adobe endlessly until they added the overlay for shooting into layouts because it was a major reason why some of my clients were unable to switch to Lightroom from PhaseOne. But we have to be realistic and remember that tethering just isn't a key market for Adobe as it is for PhaseOne, so progress is painfully slow. For example, where is live view or setting exposure which are in PhaseOne? I'd be amazed if we get those features for a few versions, and that's why I point serious tethered shooters to other solutions. And realistically, assuming your understanding of the SDK is correct you shouldn't expect a change until the next full version of Lightroom.  Good if it happens, but I wouldn't bet on it.

  • My 5 keeps pausing conversations during a call, how can I get it to lock

My cheek or ear always mutes the conversation during a call. Is there a way to get it to auto lock during a call?

It sounds like you have a problem with the proximity sensor that turns the screen off when you are on the phone. Do you have a case on the phone? If you do, try taking the case off and test a call. See if the screen turns off when you bring the phone up to your ear. If it does, it is possible the case is blocking something in the proximity sensor which is not allowing it to work properly. If it still does not work after taking the case off, you can perform the user troubleshooting, power off/on, reset by holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. If that doesn't work, then a restore, first from a backup and if needed then as a new device if necessary.

  • Lightroom 3.2 Tethered shooting with Nikon D7100

I have a laptop Windows Vista which will not allow me to upgrade Lightroom 3.2 to 5.3. I have bought a Nikon D7100. Is it possible to
enable the older version of LIghtroom 3.2 to recognise the Nikon D7100 for tethered shooting?
    Cheers.

No, Lightroom 3.2 does not recognize D7100 RAW files, and cannot tether to it.

  • Tethered shooting incompatibility

Is there a plug-in for tethered shooting in Adobe Lightroom 5 with a Nikon D2x?

    NicHamilton wrote:
Since LR 4.1 is listed as supporting the 1D mk2 it may indeed well be Yosemite that is the issue (or part of it).
As to why current versions of LR don't support a nine year old camera model it's very possibly down to changes in Canon's SDK rather than Lr
    This.
Canon (and maybe Nikon too?) eventually abandons old camera support in the SDK.
Tha said - see this page about the 1D Mk II:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/tethered-camera-support-lightroom-4.html
    "Supported only through Lightroom 4.1."
So Lr 3.3 and 4.1 should work, suggesting that the problem isn't with Lr.

  • Tethered shoot in LR5.3 with Nikon camera

I am a mac user with 10.7 OS. I recently upgraded to LR5.3 and thought to try out the tethered shooting feature with my Nikon D300. In the ‘Tethered Capture Settings’ window it shows the naming format as a DNG file. I only import image files in their native ‘NEF’ format though I am aware of the advantages of ‘DNG’ files.
Anyway I noticed the captured images were named as ‘nef’ files with its standard sidecar xmp file. Note the lower case lettering for 'nef'. I am not able to import these files to my external HD because these images were grayed out in the Import window. However if I changed the format names to upper casing, NEF, these images are visible for import.
How can I avoid the extra step of having to the change the casing of the letters and have the captured images in the tethered shoot all have the correct upper casing instead?
    Thanks
    Raymond

    Yep

    Geoff,
Thanks for the response. When the aforementioned problem occured I did check on the Lightroom Preferences. In the Preference window there are 5 tabs, General, Presets, External Editing, File Handling and Interface.
Under the File Handling the only options I see for "File Extension" are 'dng' or 'DNG'. Is this the settings you are refering to?

  • Tethered shooting for large amount of people

Here's a little bit of background to my question. I have mainly used Lightroom for organizing imports from my Canon 6D and 7D along with developing them. The shoot I'm looking for help on, with these questions, is quite different from what I'm accustomed to. I am looking at taking portraits of a large number of people at a school fundraiser for a club where the lighting conditions are the same and the camera is on a tripod shooting with a tethered capture to a laptop. So if anyone could help with the following  questions it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
    1. Is it possible in tethered capture to have the metadata panel open at the same time and be able to have someone type down their email address for each individual picture?
    2. Following question one, is it possible to email all the photos from the shoot individually to the recipients listed in the metadata?
    3. Can Lightroom automatically print photos after taken from a tethered shoot?
    4. Can Lightroom save specific tags in the metadata from a collection into a text file where they are listed along with the file name?
A bit of help with any of the questions would be great, haven't attempted anything like this before and frankly haven't found anything that could help in the documentation for Lightroom. I do apologize for any confusing wording, my computer wasn't accessible from where I am so this was typed on a iPhone.

The tethered capture floating tool panel is not modal - you can still use Lightroom's regular panels and tools while it's open, so working on a file while a session is active is no problem (provided a new shot doesn't arrive and auto-advance is turned on).
Lightroom cannot directly email images to an address taken from the IPTC metadata, for that you would need either a plugin or an external application. I don't know of one currently available.
Again, exporting metadata to a text file is a job for a plugin - but this time there are several available (such as http://www.photographers-toolbox.com/products/lrtransporter.php )
