Is iBook for me?

I currently use an I-MAC G-4 with 768 mb, an 800MHZ and a 10.2.8 O.S. For what I do (lesson plans, newsletters, research, e-mail) it works. We also have a Dell two flights up, and I use a Buffalo (means absolutely nothing to me--I had pros take care of it) so that we have internet on both computers.
Here's the point: I am trying to upgrade my computer skills (barely capable) with a class or two, and am finding that there are things I cannot do with my four-year old computer. At work, so many things are "blocked," I am also hindered. I am looking at the 13-inch iBook, and wondering if it is an option for me. Would I have to do anything special to get internet service on it at home? outside of home?
Forgive my ignorance.....I don't want to buy it unless I can use it anywhere in the house, possibly at work, and outside of my home.

HI KD2,
Internet service at home... would depend on the services available in your area. Broadband, (cable) is typically the fastest and widely used. Considering Apple has software updates available at least once a week and can be upwards of 99MB, you will need a high speed connection to handle that.
Look in your Yellow Pages for internet providers and shop around.

You can use the laptop anywhere in your home if you have a wireless network set up. Airport can handle that, information available here: http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/
If you wanted to access the internet at work, they would have to have a wireless network available to log on to. As for outside your house... depends on how far outside. I have an Airport Extreme upstairs in a condo that gives me 5 bars anywhere in the house and my patio, but it really depends on your circumstances and the possibility for interference which is mentioned the link above.
You can't go wrong with a MacBook: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=MTE3M

You might be able to upgrade to Tiger on your current Mac, but it depends on if your Mac meets the minimum requirements: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514
Also, Tiger disks aren't easy to come by...
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).Go here:

  • How do i use ibooks for saving my lecture notes / power point slides please?

Hi, how do I use ibooks for savng / storing my lecture notes on please? (on either a iphone or ipad). Also, can I save powerpoint slides to it too? thanks.

iBooks can only read two formats -- .epub and pdf.  So you have to convert your lecture notes or powerpoints to one of those.  To do that, check the Save, Export, or Share functions of whatever app you are using to create your notes.

  • How do I return an unopened refurbished iBook for a complete refund?

I ordered a refurbished 14 inch ibook a while ago and it has been sitting in an unopened box ever since. It cost about $1050. I bought this before the new intel MacBook's came out, and now that they are out, they are much better than the ibook's. Plus the iBook 14 inch is a weird ratio.
How would i return my unopened ibook for a complete refund and only pay like 50 bucks more for a new macbook?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It depends on the store you bought it from. Read the policies of the store you bought it from, if they are posted on the web. Your "awhile ago" doesn't tell us anything about the number of days. If you have no idea when you bought it, but bought it by credit card, you can usually call the store and ask them with your credit card number to verify when that was. Most stores I've seen have a time limit on returns. Some do not accept refurbished products back. It is best to check with the individual store.

  • How do I rename the PDF (both Title & Author) in new ibooks for Mavericks?

    Hi!
I can't seem to amend both Title and Author for my PDFs in the new ibooks App in Mavericks.
(Opening it in Preview and renaming it does not change the Author name FYI)
The current solutions present are for 2013 and there is none for the new app in Mavericks.
My obsessiveness does not allow me to list my books in such haphard fashion.
Any kind souls able to help?
    Thank you!

LOL!  As you've explained it, the reason this community is called iBook for Macs is because you can easily change PDF titles on a Mac…
I know that people like to be gatekeepers--and I know that people can post in the wrong places--but that's not what happened here.  I was correcting the previous comment about iBooks on the iPads!  (See earlier post above.)
"iBooks.app  on iPads or Maversick is a "viewing" app ie it allows you to open books etc,. on the device its  used on.  Its "read only" in computing terms.. you cannot change anything."
I wanted to do it by not directly pointing out the person's error, but you've forced my hand!
By the way, I ended up at this thread inadvertently while looking for how to change book titles in iBooks under iOS.  So, in case anyone else ends up here looking for how to change PDF titles on their iPads, they'll know it can be done and how!
    Happy Labor Day, everyone!

  • How to get books onto iPad when iBooks for Mac refuses to sync.

I have around 300 books which were originally in the books section of iTunes. Since upgrading to Mavericks the new iBooks for Mac is moved them all over and I ma now unable to access most of them on my iPad despite making sure all settings are correct. None of the books I use for study created by iBooks Author will now transfer. The only ones that seem to are those recently purchased from iTunes. Anybody out there found a solution yet. Apparently Apple admit that only books purchased from iTunes will sync, but I need to be able to get them on my iPad. I don't care if they sync or not.

There are a few categorical places one must visit in order to synchronize iBooks for Mac with IOS iBooks. There is no need to remove the iBook for Mac application.
System Preferences > iCloud > Documents and Data is enabled
IOS Settings > iBooks > Sync Collections (enabled) and optionally Sync Bookmarks (enabled)Assumption that iCloud is enabled on the IOS device with documents and data enabled
iBook for Mac > Preferences > General: Sync: Sync bookmarks, highlights, and collections across devices
    iTunes
Pick your IOS Device under DEVICES in the left nav
Choose Books along the top toolbar
In the Books panel, choose one of the following
    Books and PDF Files
    Books only
    PDF only
    In the Sync Books panel
    All Books
Selected BooksClick the box next to the books you wish to Sync
    Select iTunes Sync
The books (and PDF) you selected above are now on your IOS device

  • How can I code to play audio continuously from page to page in iBooks for reflow ePub

    Hi,
I have tried and successfully completed the iBooks ambient soundtrack option in Fixed Layout ePub. It works fine.
But while trying the same in Reflow ePub, it is not working in iPad iBooks. I have latest iBooks version and latest iOS version in my iPad.
Please let me know how can I code to play audio continuously from page to page in iBooks for reflow ePub?
    Thanks,
    Sundaram

As soon as the user turns to the next page, the audio stops.
That's how it works in all cases.
the book is a read aloud book.

Well where is your library located now if not in the iTunes folder?  See the links below on what your iTunes folder should look like and put it back together:

  • How can i get an older version of Ibooks for my Ipad 1?

how can i get an older version of Ibooks for my Ipad 1?
    Since I have Ibooks 3.0.2 I can't start Ibooks on my Ipad1.

For iBooks try downloading the current version on your computer's iTunes so that the app is in your purchase history. Then on your iPad go to the Purchased tab in the App Store app and see if you can download an older compatible version of it.
You can also try similar for the Kindle app - I don't know whether Amazon have made older versions of their app available in the store, so it may not work for that. If not, then as a work-around you could use their cloud reader 'app' : http://read.amazon.com - go to that site on Safari on your iPad and then create a homescreen shortcut for it (kindle cloud reader help)

  • How do I buy an Ibook for a friend?

I thought there was a way to buy an Ibook for a friend, that he could download on his Ipad. I can't find the instructions anywhere.

Unfortunately, unlike in the app and iTunes store, you cannot purchase iBooks for others.

  • IBooks for Mac - purchase books as gifts

I know in the past it was not possible to purchase books as gifts. I've seen in iBooks for iOS it is now possible to send a book as a gift; it is shown as an option at the bottom of the Featured screen.
With iBooks for Macs running Mavericks, can you gift a book? Or, if you want to send a book as a gift, do you need to do so using iBooks for iOS?
    Thanks.
    Sheri

I’m seeing the same thing on my MacBook Pro. My Mac mini, running the same OS X version 10.9.3 doesn’t have this issue. The issue exists across user accounts on the MBP.

  • IBooks for Mac Doesn't Reopen Books

iBooks isn't reopening windows after I close it. Here's what I do in sequence:
    1. Open iBooks.
    2. Double-click a book.
    3. Click the fullscreen button in the upper-right corner.
    4. Quit iBooks with CMD + Q.
    5. Open iBooks.
No windows pop up, not even my Library. I have to quit and open it again to get the Library back.
Also, it doesn't sync my progress in books between iBooks for Mac and iBooks for iPad correctly. It usually puts me a chapter or two behind where I am.
When Apple released the update, I hoped it would fix it, but nobody else seems to have this problem.

  • Using my credit in the iTunes store when buying in iBooks for PC on my macbook?

I currently have and generally always maintain a credit balance in my iTunes store account. Can this be used when i buy iBooks in the iBooks app?

Anything you purchase in the App Store, iTunes, iBooks or iBooks for the computer will charge whatever credit card you have set up on your account.  If you have a credit, that will be charged first and then the remaining balance (if there is one) will be charged to your credit card on file.

This is a concern amoung many corporate users.  It's going to take somekind of policy change with apple.

  • Are you ever going to make iBooks for Mac OSX?

It seems crazy to me that Apple has not released iBooks for the Mac!! Why would you hold out on such an essential tool for students or anyone wanting to use their computers and iOS devices for reading??
Has there been any new for a forthcoming iBooks for Mac?

No, and I doubt there will ever be. iBooks is only for iOS.
