Is InDesign the right program to create an App?

1.)  Is InDesign the right program?
Hi, I´m trying to create an app which mainly consist of text, pictures and maybe videos. The goal is to substitute Word and Power Point documents by one single app to make it more interactive. So it should include Buttons that link to different pages, a navigation bar (drop-down list) etc.
Is InDesign the right program for this? Or is Fireworks better? Or is there any other program I can use? It should be an easy program which you can use without having programming experience.
2.) Is it possible to create an app that only I can use (and some people I like to share it with)?
How long does it take to convert an interactive pdf to an app?
3.) Link different documents in InDesign.
Is it possible to create a button that links to a page on another document? I want that it isn´t possible to scroll through all pages but only those with the same content. So if you press “button 1” it links to the page with “content 1” but from there it should not be possible to go to the next page with another content but only to go back to the page where “button 1” etc. is. I think that I need different documents for this but I don´t know how to link buttons and different documents…

Creating an APP is a very in-depth process. And getting the few people to be able to share it, can be difficult.
You probably would do better with an interactive PDF. Your main concern would be finding a PDF reader for iPads and tablets that will play all your buttons. But that's not really a problem.
If I can be so bold, you might want to look at my book, Digital Publishing with Adobe InDesign CS6. (Don't let the CS6 throw you, for your needs, everything is the same.)

I did try to uninstall and reinstall.  It messed up my computer.  I had to "RESTORE" from the prior days backup.  This was not helpful at all.  I'm used to losing all my stuff when I connect to iTunes, that's a whole other issue, but now I'm completely banned from any updates to my phone at all.  Geeze.......

  • Is Premiere Pro CS3 the right program for me?

Is Premiere Pro CS3 the right program for me?
I am looking for a program that I can:
Import files that were recorded on a DVR (mp4 format)
Take two files placed next to each other on one screen and record a DVD
    | | | |
    | | | |
    | image one | | image two |
    | | | |
    |______________| |_______________|
Also export the files to other file formats, AVi, MOV

    Dave,
Premiere can do a PiP, Picture in Picture (basically, your PiP is one half of the frame), BUT your MP4 source is not the best to edit, especially with PP. If you had DV-AVI files, Captured in PP from a miniDV (tape) vid-cam, it would do a great job, but so would its little brother Premiere Elements, which wants the same source files as PP.
I have not used Womble, that Jeff recommends, but think that it has PiP. Ideally, you want to keep any re-compression down to a minimum, as you are already working with compressed MPEG files, and every additional re-compression WILL cause image degredation. Depending on the CODEC used to create your MP4 files, you have probably lost a lot of info already, and when you go to MPEG-2 (DV CODEC), for DVD, you'll loose even more. About the only way that I see you keeping any quality is if your MP4's are coded for Blu-Ray, and you can find a program with Smart Render, leaving them just as they are, allowing you to edit, then burning to a BD. Lot of "if's" in that.
I'd check out Womble and see if it can do PiP and if it works with MP4. If Jeff recommended it, it's very likely to do that. Juat expect a major quality hit, because you're already compressed the heck out of the image data once, and will have to do it again.
You could convert your MP4's to DV-AVI with a 3rd party program, Import them into PP, or PE, edit and then burn to DVD - with Encore in PP, or directly from PE. See above for comments on quality hit. It's those source files that are the problem. That format is meant for distribution/viewing and not for editing. The effect, however, is easy as can be. There are many tutorials on how to do it with variations, on the Web, but nearly all NLE programs want better source material to start, if any quality is to be maintained.
I'd also post on the Premiere Elements forum, as a lot of people there work with less than ideal source files, and might know of good free, or cheap, conversion programs to use. If you have the CODEC on your machine, DigitalMedia Converter can handle the conversion for you, and do it in batch. It's cheap at ~ US$45, and can batch process, but it cannot improve the quality, or get back the data lost in the first compression - nothing can.
If this is all you want to do, with the above comments on conversion first taken seriously, Premiere Elements will cost about US$100 and do it easily.
    Sorry for the bad news,

  • User Exit that will allow the SAP program to create DN, but not create IDO

    Hi all,
The requirement is when we select 1 PO in VL10g transaction and click the u201CBackgroundu201D button, the user exit will allow the SAP program to create Delivery Number, but not create IDOC for the Delivery Number to send it to warehouse system.  Also the created Delivery Number must be in changeable mode in ECC system .I need to find any exit to make the DN table field LIKP-VLSTK not to be u201CBu201D (distributed).  The B will make DN not changeable in ECC system which is hard coded value in standard program. so the DN should be changeable.
Please suggest me the User Exit name which serves my purpose.
    Thanks in advance
    Latha.

    Welcome to SCN!
Here is some code that will allow you to find exits and BADIS on your own:

  • What is the best program to create a HD 1080p slideshow?

A little advice on what the best program is for creating high quality HD (1080p) slide shows from hires jpegs.  I'm not at all interested in burning the slideshows to DVD.
Until now I've used iMovie HD 6, iMovie '09, and  iPhoto on our mac mini that runs SnowLeopard.
With iMovie  HD 6 the transitions (cross dissolve and overlap) come out quite un-smooth look bad.  Also HD 6 will not do 1080p, only 1080i.
With iMovie '09  photos that are portrait oriented (as opposed to landscape) often get poorly cropped.
iPhoto simply does not have the editing flexibility I need.
I've tried the demo version of Fotomagico and although the resulting slideshow is stunning, on my machine the program is almost impossible to work with because of its sluggishness.  It is painfully slow in responding to all mouse moves. Dragging an image on the Stage is very difficult because the image lags behind the mouse so by the time the little green alignment guides come on to show center or edge alignment -- the image is already past that point.  There is also a huge lag changing images on the stage.   Also the spinning color wheel appears way too frequently.
Photo to Movie, based on their website, Photo to Movie can produce HD quality video.  Does anyone have any experience in comparing Photo to Movie with any of the iMovies?
Other than FCP, what do you folks think is best slideshow program for producing 1080p shows?

Ditto what Matthew said about Photo to Movie.
There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • What's the "right" way to create a News list in CQ5.4?

    Hey folks,
I'm a brand new CQ developer and, though I've done a lot of reading, I'm still in the dark on how to do a few things.
I'm currently working on a corporate website, and I need to build a News page. Each article contains a title and rich text (possibly including embedded images, videos, etc...), and the News page itself should display a paginated list of recent article summaries (with "read full article" links). I also need to show the two or three most recent article summaries on the site's front page, under a News heading.
I thought there'd be a pre-built component to cover this case, since most corporate sites include a News page of some sort, but I haven't found one. Am I missing it? I looked into the Blog page template, but I think that adapting that may be overkill.
I think that the right way to do this would be to build a News component with a Title and Rich Text field in the edit dialog. New articles could be created by dropping these components into the parsys of the News page. I could then create both a .html and a .summary view for the components and use a customized List component to display the summary list on the front page. Am I on the right track here, or am I overcomplicating it?
    Thanks!
    - Michael

    Hi,
The "right" way of building any list-like component is to extend the existing List component.
That is referenced in this documentation page:
    http://dev.day.com/docs/en/cq/current/wcm/default_components.html#List
You can find it under /libs/foundation/components/lists
To create, for example, a 'News List' component, just create a new component under your /apps/myproject/components, setting 'foundation/components/list' as sling:resourceSuperType ans add your custom script to display each news item. see also [1]
That way you canprovide more renderers to be used around your site(s)

    Hope this helps,

  • My files are not opening into the right program now

After updating to Adobe CC 2014 on all my applications, Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop, my computer is not recongizing the proper program to open an ai, psd or jpg file into. I keep try to set my defaults using the Windows Explorer settings, but when I try to add Photoshop.exe as my default for a .jpg file, it doesn't add it as a valid option.
Any ideas on how to fix this? It's really broken my work flow.

Delete existing file associations before trying to "fix" them. You are simply suffering from context handler overflow, meaning there's too many actions associated with specific file types and Windows can't add more.

  • Is this the right program for me?

I need a program that'll work very well with all of my audio equipment for recording. I need something that is easy to use, but still has nice results. I plan on uploading my recordings as MP3s to a musician myspace. Is this the right thing to purchase?

Jake, one man's perspective. Your mileage may vary:
I came to Logic via Garageband, and some experience with ProTools from around five or six years ago. After the usual setup headaches that, quite honestly, were more due to my inexperience than any inherent Logic lameness, I am up and running and quite happy with it.
I think I benefit from the fact that I pick up new technologies/gadgets/what have you very quickly. In addition, this being the first pro-level recording application I've worked with, I'm pretty much a blank slate -- I can't say "Man, logic f-in ***** compared to Cubase/ProTools/etc." Maybe it does; maybe it doesn't. I just have no real frame of reference, so it's all new and cool to me.
Also, I suspect my needs are fairly simple relative to the pros on this board. I do guitars/bass/ mando/vox audio, keys and drums (Addictive Drums, yeah!) software instruments, usually about 12-16 tracks. (Musically my stuff is a combo of Django Reinhardt and Black Sabbath, all those minor 6ths doncha know; I also orchestrate stuff written by a friend of mine who's a post-grunge dude from Seattle.)
I'm totally excited with the sonic possibilities Logic has offered. I love tinkering around with the different plugins/instruments etc to achieve just the right little ear tickle *******. I'm now listening to music in a different way -- and having these little "Oh, that's how Jimmy Page did it! I can do that!" moments which is a pretty awesome experience. Being able to listen to old music in new ways is always a good thing.
And seriously, for the price I am not sure you can beat it -- the basic studio environment, plus software instruments, plus loops. For a (fairly accomplished) parkin'-lot picker and DIY'er who's doing the Myspace thing, it's everything I want.
But as to Logic's industrial strength, and applicability to professional environments, I gotta defer to the pros on the board.

  • I have a Serial Number, but i cannot find the right program

    Hello,
I bought 3 years ago the Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium for Students (Mac). I am located in Turkey when it is importend.
2 days ago i formatted my Mac. Now i am trying to reinstall my Creative Suite. I downloaded the program from the adobe website, because i couldn't found DVD. But program doesn't accept my Serial Number, it doesn't match.
I am also not sure about the Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium, but it is written on my registered Adobe account, so also the Serial Number
How can i find the right download for my Serial Number?

Adobe might be able to say, but most people here are not Adobe employees.  Try contacting Adobe thru chat.  You will likely need to share your account information with them in order to determine which program you might own.

  • Is Labview The Right Program?

I’m trying to decide if Labview is the right system for my project and I would appreciate any input from the community.
The project is an automated power supply DVT program, and it’s a fairly large one. The UUT can have up to 20 outputs, each one with different voltage output and loading requirements. In addition to whole unit tests I’ll also need to perform 5 tests on each output. Those tests would be the standards: regulation, ripple, stepload, and turn-on/off overshoot. I plan to communicate with my various instruments over GPIB.
After poking around with the Labview evaluation program for a week or so I have no doubt that LV can perform all the tests I require. My concern is how big the VI will have to be to accomplish this, and how to structure the program. The whole-unit tests like inrush current and efficiency aren’t a problem, but 20 outputs x 5 tests each = 100 tests and each has to be done at three different input voltages and three different temperatures. Finally, the whole thing has to be fire-and-forget. That is: start the test and go home.
I believe that once I have the basic test written I can simply loop the whole thing after I change the input voltage and temperature parameters. But 100 tests are a lot of subVIs! The other option might be to use one set of 5 subVIs and loop that 20 times while changing test parameters from an array preloaded with the various ‘scope and load settings as required by the particular output under test.
So I’m wondering if LV is up to this task, and if so, does anyone have any suggestion/comments on the program structure.
    Thanks for any help.

You are right to be concerned about architecting a large scale program from scratch with only a week of self paced training.
TestStand might be of benefit as well but, then you have TWO development envionments to learn.
A "Typical" project in this situation becomes a painful learning experience where you learn the hard way how not to structure your test.  Better practice is to first make sure you have access to at least the online self-paced courses (and dedicate some time for Training) AND to team up with a Certified LabVIEW Consultant or another local NI Alliance partner to help you achieve "Success" without the pain of several failed attempts.  After all, that is why NI invests in a Partner program- to help you "Build This - Not That."

  • What is the best program to create a price list in?

What is the best program to design a price list please.

I would use a spreadsheet to keep a current price list for my own use. If I wanted to print a price list for distribution to customers, I would take the current prices from the spreadsheet and paste them into a template from a word processor program, such as Word or Pages.

  • What is the best program for creating cd inserts for coverart of a  CD?

I am in a band and need to know the best program for cd artwork.

If you're more concerned about designing them than about printing them yourself (which would cost a comparative fortune using an inkjet printer, and look crummy using a color laser printer), then Photoshop and Illustrator are by far the best design tools available.

  • Is Flash the Right Program For This?

I have an animation of a product that rotates, then some parts fade to show internal gears turning, then the whole thing rotates back to the starting position. I have that animation as individual frames, and .mp4 (and .avi). I need to add call-outs that appear at certain parts of the animation to explain what is happening with the product, and also to have the animation pause at those parts, while my client explains certain things. He then needs to be able to press a play button to start the animation again. This needs to happen several times during the presentation.
He will be presenting using a Macbook Air, and will not be leaving the presentation behind.
What Adobe product is the correct one to use?Is Flash the right solution?
I was originally planning on adding the call-outs in AE, but when he asked to add the pauses, and "Play" button I wasn't sure what was best anymore. The animation is rendered in HD, and the final output needs to be HD as well.

you could do that all with flash.
you might be able to do it with premiere, too but i'm not a premiere expert,

  • Is AIR the right platform for photo management app?

I need to build a web-enabled photo management app with the following features:
    server sign-in and authentication
photos fetched from server via REST API/XML
tag, rate (i.e. 1-5 stars), and edit properties for photos, with data updated on or sync-ed with server
all the RIA UI goodies, like multi-select, drag/drop, AJAX-style auto-complete, overlay icons on thumbs,
all the photo management goodies, like fast scrolling, histograms, resizeable thumbnail
able to handle 1000s of photos in 1 album (server is on a local LAN)
One key issue is how the platform loads an album with 1000s of photos in the background, and scrolls through pages of thumbnails. I tried before to build this in Java and all the threading issues were too much for me.
I have good experience with CakePHP & MySQL and some experience with Java, but I am resigned to learning a new platform/libs. I just need to know where to invest my learning time.
Can some experienced users pipe in on whether AIR the right platform for me to build on? Should I use Javascript etc, or learn Flex?
Is there anything out there I could just build on? I'm also considering building on Yahoo YUI or Google GWT as an alternative.
    thx.
    m.

Let me clarify the issue of 1000s of photo. I the app would need to load thumbnails for 1000s of photos, but only open the full size photo when the thumbnail is clicked. probably 120px max dimension, pre-rendered on the server. I have tried to open 1000 thumbs in a plain html page, and the photos come quickly - as if from the local file system - but it does seem to slow the UI until everything is loaded.
Is there a way for AIR to load the thumbnails is the current "view port" immediately, and the rest in the background? YUI has an imageLoader class that does something like this. Could I use this within AIR?
The other requirement is to manage a DB of tags ratings, and other attributes for the photos, but I can't imagine that is a big challenge. right?

  • Is iM the right program for me to use?

I am jumping into the world of video blogging or as the macworld calls it: video podcasting. I have never done anything video before. At first I was thinking iMovie will be the program I need. But the more I read about it, the more I feel that iMovie is not for me. Am I right?
I need a program that can create a film:
    1. that is able to help me cut videos coming from my iSight webcam, and can separate audio from video.
    2. that can also do the same for video from my digital cam, (soon to be Casio Exilim Z70) ... I don't care if I need to convert formats, as long as it is doable without much loss in quality
    3. that can then take this video and save it in a format usable for a podcast and can then be used on YouTube or a personal site.
The more I look into iMovie, the more I see a tool built for home videos, and the idea of creating files that are then recorded back to the tapes. What I need is a program that can create short digital films in resolution such as 640x400 that can be used online. Could iMovie be this program? Do I need any additional programs?

"lossy" means: you lose pic quality... stutter, artifacts, strange colors...
you don't need to spend 500$, the next garagesale probably offers an old one for 75$ ...
how they do it? ask them, not me, me no kid, me no blogger ...
to get a little ... "old man philosophical":
the claim is: cheap/free, fast, easy ...
the truth is: if you have no skills & talent, you have to pay others to help you..
iM helps you - within its limits; using it outside these specs, makes it neccessairy to understand underlying techniqués and methods, to find workarounds .. if you don't want to spend time & sweat ... go back to field "start"..
iM is made for miniDV camcorders, if you prefer to use other devices, use the software included with such devices; if the included software isn't Mac-compliant, get another computer... - that easy.-
I've seen youtube-uploads from mobile phones.. ok.-
